Bardawil expressed deep regret for what he called “the deliberate breakdown and delay by Fatah to implement the reconciliation deal, saying: “Unfortunately, the reconciliation remains where it was and there is no desire to implement what [the agreement] stated. We therefore call on Fatah to apply the reconciliation deal. The technical committees in Hamas on our side are ready for that.
“Fatah put off implementing the reconciliation to an indefinite term, until the results [of the UN statehood bid in September] are in. And Mahmoud Abbas, who has frozen implementing the reconciliation deal is responsible for this,” Bardawil added.
Bardawil pointed out that Abbas tried to use reconciliation to offer concessions on Palestinian rights. He said that “Abbas clearly used reconciliation last September (during the UN bid) without our permission, and tried to display in the United Nations that he is the full spokesman of the Palestinian people to concede 80 percent of the Palestinian people’s rights, and he put the ‘entitlements of September’ ahead of the entitlements of reconciliation”.
Bardawil also ruled out that the Arab Spring would pass without affecting the situation in Palestine.
“The Arab Spring will not leave Abbas in this way and with this procrastination. It would be best for him to take advantage of the time to bring about real reconciliation based on partnership. As for procrastinating in this way, it will not produce anything. The people who applaud him today will [one day] lash him for outrageous delay of the reconciliation and for the turmoil he caused in the Palestinian street. He cannot invest in the Arab Spring for the sake of concessions forever.”
Bardawil also denied that any date had been assigned for new rounds of reconciliation talks, adding that “we do not need new talks, we need only to implement what has already been agreed upon.”
