An internationally-reputed political commentator says the United States has spent billions of dollars to engineer an “entire coup” in Ukraine.

“The US spent 5 billion dollars through NGOs to call for a revolution [in Ukraine] which Russia has correctly identified as a war,”  Mike Billington, with the Executive Intelligence Review, said in an interview with Press TV.

The analyst went onto say that the US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland is still in Kiev to manage the aftermath of the “coup” and the ongoing chaos in the country.

He concluded that the US would fail to advance its vicious plots as the American empire was on the “verge of collapse,” adding Barack Obama has become the “most unpopular” president of the history.
The remarks come as Deputy Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic Andrei Purgin recently told Press TV that the United States is leading the battle against pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine.

He also said American mercenaries have been seen in the Ukrainian city of Krasnoarmeysk.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow activists and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russians in mid-April.
The United Nations says over 3,500 people have been killed during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
