War Drums Beat In Middle East After Thousands Of Casualties In Beirut Explosion

On the evening of August 4th, a massive explosion rocked the port of the Lebanese capital of Beirut, causing devastating damage and leaving thousands of casualties. The explosion sent a shockwave across the city and blew out windows up to 10 kilometers away. It was felt as far away as Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea.
As of the morning of August 5th, the number of reported fatalities exceeded 100, with at least 4,000 people reported injured. At least 48 staff members of the United Nations and 27 members of their families were among the injured. 10 rescuers involved in the operation to contain the damage and to help people have been reported killed.
Initial reports suggested that the explosion may have been caused by an incident in the firework storage area. However, later, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, which is typically used as an agricultural fertilizer, had been stored for six years at a port warehouse without proper safety measures, “endangering the safety of citizens.”
This statement was backed by General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim, who said a “highly explosive material” had been confiscated years earlier and stored in the warehouse, just minutes’ walk from Beirut’s shopping and nightlife districts.
It is still unclear what caused the explosion itself thus laying the ground for various speculations in mainstream media outlets and on social media platforms. In particular, reports suggested that a number of Hezbollah members were in the port area at the moment of the explosion. This immediately caused reports that this may have been a result of some Israeli attack, for example sabotage actions or a somehow unnoticed missile strike, and that the site of the explosion was in fact a part of the Hezbollah military infrastructure.
The Israeli Defense Forces did not officially comment on these speculations. Israeli media, which are often eager to promote supposed Israeli military victories, claimed that Israeli forces did not attack Beirut. In their turn, Hezbollah denounced reports that the explosion happened on one of their sites saying that there was no Israeli attack on August 4.
Nonetheless, it seems that the US leadership has a quite different point of view. Commenting on the situation after a meeting with military officials, President Donald Trump claimed that the incident was an attack. “They seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind,” Trump said.
Whatever the real cause of the tragedy turns out to be, the Beirut explosions have already fueled tensions in the region. And despite comments by Hezbollah and Israeli media that it was not a military incident, the warring sides are actively accusing each other. Comments by the US President about a supposed attack on the Beirut port do not make the situation any easier.
Taking into account the recent series of military incidents on the Israeli-Lebanese contact line, and in the Israeli-occupied area of the Golan Heights, any new border provocation may easily lead to a larger escalation. The years of war propaganda and military confrontations together with increased tension within Israeli and Lebanese society respectively have already created conditions in which a further, even small, military incident may appear to be enough to provoke a larger war in the region. This large war is in no interest of Tel Aviv or Hezbollah because it will obviously have a devastating impact on both Israel and Lebanon. In this light, it is especially interesting that the Trump administration is making statements that would contribute to this scenario. There is a chance that in a time of a deepening social and political crisis in the US on top of a complicated economic situation in the runup to the next US Presidential election, some hotheads may believe that a new, theoretically ‘victorious’ war in the Middle East, could help them to remain in power.

Hezbollah releases its first statement after Beirut Port explosion

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:15 P.M.) – Hezbollah has issued a statement this evening about the recent explosion that took place at the Port of Beirut in the central part of the capital.

“We extend our condolences to the Lebanese people over this national tragedy, and we are putting our capabilities to the service of our people,” Hezbollah said in a statement, commenting on the explosion that took place at Beirut Port today.

“This tragic catastrophe and its unprecedented devastation has serious consequences at various levels and will require from all Lebanese and all political forces and national actors solidarity, unity and joint action to overcome the effects of this cruel ordeal.”

The statement continued: “We extend to the honorable Lebanese people and the families of the martyrs and the wounded, the deepest levels of sympathy and a feeling of deep sorrow for this great national tragedy.”

The Hezbollah statement further saluted all the medical and nursing staff, humanitarian relief organizations and the civil defense and firefighters for their great efforts in rescue, first aid and assistance.

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has postponed his speech, which was scheduled for tomorrow, until further notice due to the national tragedy and a commitment to national mourning.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that the number of victims has risen to 63 and more than 3,000 were injured in the Beirut Port explosion.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time; however, the Lebanese Armed Forces have deployed to the scene of the explosion to help civilians and put out the fire.

For his part, the Director General of the Lebanese General Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, said that “the talk about fireworks is ridiculous”, stressing that investigations are under way.

He added: “It appears that the explosion occurred in a store of high explosive materials confiscated for years.”

لبنان يخسر خلال دقائق بانفجار المرفأ ما يوازي خسائره في حرب تموز في 33 يوماً

مليار دولار / دياب: ما حصل كارثة وطنيّة لكنه لن يمرّ دون حساب وسيدفع المسؤولون الثمن

توقعت مصادر طبية أن يكون ما تم نقله إلى المستشفيات والمراكز الصحية وما تمّت معالجته في المكان من الجرحى، حتى ساعات صباح اليوم قد تجاوز الخمسة آلاف جريح، وأن يبلغ عدد الشهداء أكثر من مئة كان منهم ستون شهيداً قد جرى إحصاؤهم حتى منتصف الليل، بينما قدرت الخسائر المادية التي أصابت الأبنية السكنية والمحال التجارية والمؤسسات الاقتصادية والسيارات، بأكثر من مليار دولار، وقالت مصادر تابعت الانفجار الكارثي الذي حول مدينة بيروت إلى ساحة حرب تشبه هيروشيما بعد القنبلة الذرية، وتشبه نيويورك بعد أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول، إن ما خسره لبنان وعاصمته خلال دقائق يعادل ما خسره في حرب تموز 2006 خلال ثلاثة وثلاثين يوماً.

الرواية التي استقرت عليها مراجع أمنية وحكومية في تفسير الانفجار الذي بلغ تأثيره حد إسقاط زجاج ابنية في جزيرة قبرص البعيدة مئة وثمانين كليومتراً عن ساحل بيروت، وعادلت تردداته زلزالاً بقوة خمس درجات ريختر، تقول إن المواد التي تسببت بالتفجير هي كمية ضخمة تقدّر بأطنان من مواد شديدة الإنفجار من نيترات الصوديوم تمت مصادرتها من باخرة كانت تنقل السلاح والذخائر من تركيا للجماعات الإرهابية في سورية عن طريق مرفأ طرابلس، ضبطها الجيش اللبناني ونقلها إلى مرفأ بيروت حيث تمّ تفريغ حمولتها ونقلت مؤقتاً إلى العنبر الثاني عشر تمهيداً لنقلها من الجهات المعنية إلى حيث يتم إتلافها، ومضت السنة تلو السنة والمخاطرة قائمة وبقيت المواد المتفجرة حتى تسببت بهذه الكارثة للبنان وعاصمته. وقد أظهر اللبنانيون نخوة وروح تعاون أدهشت كل من تابع وقائع الكارثة، بعيداً عن أصوات النشاز التي سارعت لحرب إعلامية لتزوير الوقائع وزج اسم حزب الله تارة بصفته صاحب مصانع صواريخ في حرم المرفأ، ومرة بالحديث عن سيطرة حزب الله على المرفأ، لكن حبل الكذب قصير، وظهر المواطنون يتطوّعون لنقل المصابين والبحث عنهم ورفع الركام، ومساعدة أطقم الإسعاف والإطفاء، وامتلأت وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي بإعلانات من مواطنين عن تقديم منازلهم التي أعلنوا وضعها بتصرف من أصيبت منازلهم وباتوا بلا مأوى، وتهافت الآلاف إلى مراكز التبرع بالدم، في كل المناطق تلبية لنداءات الصليب الأحمر والمؤسسات الصحية.

رئيس الجمهورية العماد ميشال عون دعا المجلس الأعلى للدفاع للانعقاد لمتابعة عمليات الإنقاذ، بينما تحدث رئيس الحكومة عن كارثة وطنية واعداً ألا تمر من دون محاسبة، وبأن المسؤول سيدفع الثمن، بينما أعلنت أكثر من عاصمة عن استعدادها لتقديم المساعدات للبنان. وتوقعت مصادر مطلعة وصول مستشفيات ميدانية من كل من قطر وإيران، ووصول معدات طبية ومواد دوائية من فرنسا ومنظمة الصحة العالمية، بينما سيظهر اليوم ما ستسفر عنه الاتصالات التي سيجريها وزير الخارجية شربل وهبة مع وزراء خارجية الدول العربية والأجنبية طلباً للمساعدة في إزالة آثار الكارثة ومساعدة الناس على إعادة إعمار مساكنها ومحالها التجارية وتعويضها عن خسائرها.

لم يكن اللبنانيون يتوقعون ان تلحق دولتهم بهم الدمار والموت، فما شهده لبنان أمس من خراب طال بيروت وضواحيها، عطفاً على سقوط عدد كبير من الشهداء والجرحى من جراء الانفجار الذي حدث في العنبر 12 في مرفأ بيروت لا يتحمّل مسؤوليته الا السلطة الفاسدة التي لم تكتف بتغطية الفاسدين والإمعان في سرقة شعبها، بل ذهبت بعيداً في إهمال ملف بالغ الخطورة، وتعاطت باستخفاف مع مواد شديدة الخطورة خزنت في مرفأ بيروت منذ 4 سنوات ولم تقدم على تلفها رغم علمها وإدراكها بما قد تخلفه هذه المواد لو انفجرت من خسائر بشرية ومادية.

فانفجار يوم أمس، وصل دوّيه إلى قبرص، فمادة النترات كانت السبب الرئيسي في الانفجار الضخم الذي ضرب مرفأ بيروت بحسب ما أعلن مدير عام الجمارك اللبنانية بدري ضاهر، في حين اشار اللواء عباس إبراهيم الى أن ٢٧٠٠ طن من مادة الأمونيوم هي التي انفجرت وكانت في طريقها الى أفريقيا.

وفيما غصّت مداخل مختلف مستشفيات بيروت بالجرحى الذين حضر بعضهم بسيارات ودراجات نارية مدنية، مع تأكيد عدد من المستشفيات عدم قدرتها على تلبية الحالات الطارئة التي لا تزال تصل إليها نتيجة الأعداد الكبيرة التي وصلت اليها، أوعز وزير الصحة حمد حسن معالجة المصابين نتيجة الانفجار على نفقة وزارة الصحة في مختلف المستشفيات المتعاقدة وغير المتعاقدة مع الوزارة. وطلب من المواطنين وفرق الإغاثة والصليب الأحمر والدفاع المدني التوجّه بالجرحى والمصابين الى المستشفيات المحيطة بالعاصمة لأن مستشفيات العاصمة تضيق بالجرحى.

ويعقد مجلس الوزراء اليوم جلسة استثنائية في قصر بعبدا للبحث في توصيات المجلس الأعلى للدفاع ومتابعة تداعيات الكارثة التي وقعت في بيروت، وأعلن المجلس الأعلى للدفاع بعد اجتماع مساء أمس، «بيروت مدينة منكوبة»، ورفع توصية لإعلان حال طوارئ. وقد شكل لجنة لتحديد المسؤوليات. وأكد أن مجلس الوزراء سيجتمع اليوم الأربعاء استثنائياً في القصر الجمهوري لاتخاذ القرارات المناسبة.

وبقرار من رئيس الجمهورية العماد ميشال عون، تمّ تشكيل خلية أزمة في القصر الجمهوري برئاسة مدير عام رئاسة الجمهورية انطوان شقير، مهمتها مواكبة تداعيات الكارثة التي وقعت في مرفأ بيروت، والتنسيق الحثيث مع خلية الأزمة التي شكلت لهذه الغاية والجهات المعنية.

وقال الرئيس عون في مستهل الجلسة: «كارثة كبرى حلّت بلبنان والهدف من هذا الاجتماع اتخاذ الإجراءات القضائية والأمنية الضرورية، ومساعدة المواطنين ومعالجة الجرحى والمحافظة على الممتلكات».

وشدّد على «ضرورة التحقيق في ما حدث وتحديد المسؤوليات، ولا سيما أن تقارير أمنية كانت أشارت إلى وجود مواد قابلة للاشتعال والانفجار في العنبر المذكور».

وأكد أن «اتصالات عدّة وردت من رؤساء دول عربية وأجنبية للتضامن مع لبنان في محنته وتقديم المساعدات العاجلة في مختلف المجالات».

وأكد رئيس الحكومة حسان دياب خلال كلمة له من السراي الحكومي، أن ما حصل أمس لن يمرّ من دون حساب وسيدفع المسؤولون عنه الثمن. وتوجّه بنداء عاجل الى الدول الصديقة والشقيقة أن تقف الى جانب لبنان وأن تساعدنا على بلسمة جراحنا.

وتفقد دياب يرافقه وزيرا الداخلية والبلديات محمد فهمي والأشغال ميشال نجار، موقع الانفجار في مرفأ بيروت. كما أصدر رئيس الحكومة قراراً بإعلان اليوم الأربعاء يوم حداد وطني على الضحايا الذين سقطوا.

وعلى صعيد آخر، أصدر المكتب الإعلامي في قصر بعبدا بياناً أشار فيه إلى أنّ «الرئيس ميشال عون تابع تفاصيل الانفجار الكبير الذي وقع في مرفأ بيروت، وأعطى توجيهات إلى كل القوى المسلحة بالعمل على معالجة تداعيات الانفجار الكبير وتسيير دوريات في الأحياء المنكوبة من العاصمة والضواحي لضبط الأمن». كما طلب عون في البيان نفسه «تقديم الإسعافات الى الجرحى والمصابين على نفقة وزارة الصحة، وتأمين الإيواء للعائلات التي تشردت نتيجة الأضرار الهائلة التي لحقت بالممتلكات».

وفيما أفيد أن جهاز أمن الدولة كان طلب منذ 5 أشهر فتح تحقيق بالمواد المتفجرة الموجودة في العنبر رقم 12 بمرفأ بيروت كلف مفوض الحكومة لدى المحكمة العسكرية بالإنابة الأجهزة الأمنية جمع المعلومات لمعرفة حقيقة انفجار المرفأ.

وليس بعيداً، انكبت الدول الغربية والعربية على التضامن مع لبنان، وأعلن متحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية الأميركية أن الوزارة تتابع عن كثب التقارير عن انفجار في بيروت ومستعدة لتقديم «كل المساعدة الممكنة»، وذكر أن الوزارة ليست لديها معلومات عن سبب الانفجار، وأضاف أنها تتعاون مع السلطات المحلية لمعرفة ما إذا كان هناك أميركيون ضمن المصابين.

أعلن وزير الخارجية الفرنسي جان ايف لودريان أن «فرنسا تقف إلى جانب لبنان ومستعدة لتقديم المساعدة له بعد الانفجار. وأكد السفير الفرنسي إيمانويل بون تحضير فرنسا مساعدة إنسانية عاجلة تبدأ بالانطلاق هذا المساء (مساء امس) باتجاه لبنان وباريس بصدد تحريك العواصم الأوروبية لمساعدة لبنان. وفيما عرض الاتحاد الأوروبي تقديم المساعدة على لبنان، أبدى رئيس وزراء بريطانيا استعداد لندن لتقديم كل ما بوسعنا من دعم لبيروت.

وأجرى أمير قطر اتصالاً بالرئيس ميشال عون وأمر بإرسال مستشفيات ميدانيّة في أعقاب انفجار بيروت، كما تلقى الرئيس عون اتصالين من الرئيس الفرنسي ايمانويل ماكرون والعراقي برهم صالح اللذين أكدا التضامن مع لبنان بعد المحنة التي تسبب بها الانفجار في بيروت.

وأعطى الديوان الأميري في الكويت توجيهات بمساعدات طبيّة عاجلة للبنان. ولهذه الغاية تلقى وزير الخارجية شربل وهبة اتصالاً من نظيره الأردني وضع خلاله الأخير جميع الإمكانيات الأردنيّة بتصرف لبنان لمواجهة تداعيات الانفجار الكارثيّ، وأعلنت طهران على لسان وزير خارجيتها محمد جواد ظريف أنها مستعدة لمساعدة لبنان بأي طريقة بعد انفجار بيروت.

إلى ذلك وبعد التكهنات العديدة التي تحدثت عن قصف إسرائيلي سبب الانفجار في المرفأ، أعلن مسؤول إسرائيلي أن «إسرائيل ليست لها علاقة». وقال وزير خارجية العدو الإسرائيلي غابي أشكينازي لقناة إن12 التلفزيونية الإسرائيلية إن «الانفجار كان على الأرجح حادثاً نتج عن حريق».

وأجّل الأمين العام لحزب الله السيد حسن نصرالله كلمته التي كانت مقرّرة اليوم الأربعاء الى إشعار آخر بسبب الفاجعة الوطنية والتزاماً بالحداد الوطني.

Secretary General of Kataeb Party killed in Beirut Port explosion

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:20 P.M.) – The Secretary General of the Kataeb Party, Nizar Najarian, was reported dead after suffering a severe injury at the party’s headquarters during the massive blast at the Port of Beirut on Tuesday.

According to LBCI, the party’s secretary general died as a result of a severe head injury at the party’s headquarters, Beit Al-Wassit (Central House), in Beirut.

Several politicians have mourned his death, including the President of the Kataeb Party of Lebanon, Samy Gemayel.

The Lebanese Health Ministry has reported that as many as ten people have been killed as a result of the explosion at the Port of Beirut.

Civil defense units are now combing through several areas around the explosion’s epicenter to help civilians and put out fires.

Beirut Explosion Leaves Scores of Casualties, Entirely Damaged City Edit

A massive explosion rocked the Lebanese capital city of Beirut, leaving a very high number of casualties and injuries as well as terrible damage to almost the entire city.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency [NNA] reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Commenting on the tragedy, Head of Lebanon’s General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim said “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Relatively, Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan said the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire were killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.
