Reflections of Fidel

Deciphering the thinking of the new president of the United States

IT isn’t too difficult. After his inauguration, Barack Obama stated that the return of Cuban territory occupied by the Guantánamo Naval Base to its legitimate owner had to be carefully considered, first in terms of whether it would affect the defense capacity of the United States in even the most minimal way.

Second, he would also have to consider which concessions Cuba would make in return, including no doubt a demand to change its political system. That is a price against which Cuba has fought for half a century.

Maintaining a military base in Cuba against the will of our people violates the most basic principles of international law. The president is obliged to abide by those standards without conditions. Not to respect it constitutes an act of arrogance and an abuse of his immense imperial power against a small country.

To understand the abusive nature of that empire, statements published on the official website of the U.S. government Jan 22 should be taken into account. Biden and Obama resolutely declared that their fundamental commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, the principal U.S. ally in the region.

The United States will never distance itself from Israel, and its president and vice president "believe strongly in Israel’s right to protect its citizens," which assures that, on this issue, they continue the policy of George W. Bush. I regret our friend Obama has fallen into sharing with Israel responsibility for the genocide of Palestinians. Before his watch, the United States converted Israel into an important nuclear power that annually absorbs a significant part of the exports of the empire’s prosperous military industry, with which it is threatening extreme violence on the peoples of all countries of Muslim faith. But Obama is now offering similar sweeteners to Russia, China, Europe, Latin America and the rest of the world.

There are many similar examples; one does not need to be a fortune-teller. Just read the statements of Mr. Gates, the Pentagon chief for both Bush and Obama, and an expert in military affairs.
