Khatib: The trial of Sheikh Salah is political

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Sheikh Kamal Al-Khatib, the deputy head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands, stated Sunday that the trial of Sheikh Ra'ed Salah is political par excellence and has nothing to do with law and justice.

In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Sheikh Khatib said that Sheikh Salah was imprisoned because of his principled positions in defense of the occupied holy city of Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque.

"The charge of spitting at the policeman is not a big deal; we saw how the Jewish settlers attacked Zionist policemen with eggs, spitting, shoes and dirt when the Gaza Strip was evacuated and no one of them was brought before a court," the Islamic leader underlined.

He affirmed, however, that Sheikh Salah did not and cannot do such an act and that his imprisonment was only political aimed at disrupting his role in defending the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

For his part, Palestinian premier Ismail Haneyya hailed the national positions of Sheikh Salah and said that he shouldered the responsibility of defending the honor and dignity of the Palestinian people, and the Arab and Muslim nations.

Haneyya made his remarks in a ceremony to honor graduate students at the Islamic university in Gaza on Sunday night.

The premier also stressed that the liberation of Palestine can only be achieved through educated and faithful people who are able to make great sacrifices for the homeland.

He welcomed the UN human rights council for its decision to send a team of experts to the region to investigate Israel's deadly attack on the Freedom Flotilla aid convoy and expressed hope that the UN could take action against the perpetrators.

Head of the Muslim brotherhood movement in Egypt Mohamed Badi phoned Sheikh Salah Sunday evening before his imprisonment sentence officially took effect to express his solidarity with him and the Jerusalemite people.

Badi condemned Israel's decision to imprison Sheikh Salah as racist and part of its schemes to Judaize the holy city and demolish the Aqsa Mosque.

He stressed that the current stage is critical and needs urgent action to protect the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and stop the Zionist encroachment in the city.
