Assad: The resistance of the occupation is an honor we should be proud of

ISTANBUL, (PIC)-- Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad stated that the resistance of the occupation is a national duty and "to support it is a moral and legal duty as well as an honor which we should be proud of".
Speaking at the 25th economic summit of the standing committee for economic and commercial cooperation of the organization of the Islamic conference (COMCEC) in Istanbul on Monday, president Assad added that supporting the resistance does not deny at all the Arabs’ fixed desire for the achievement of just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the return of the occupied lands, especially the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, but the failure of negotiations in restoring the usurped rights fully means resorting to resistance as an alternative solution.
“We should not be deceived about what was raised on stopping settlement in the occupied Palestinian lands as the basis for the resumption of negotiations as if the whole problem now lies in settlement only… stopping settlement building is not an end in itself, but it is a stage or a step no more… what about dismantling settlements instead of stopping them and the most important of that, what about ending the occupation?” the Syrian president underlined in the context of talking about the Palestinian rights.
“So, we have to keep the problem in its basic framework and the real cause of it is the Israeli occupation. The elimination of the occupation ensures us stopping then removing the settlements and not the opposite,” he added.
The president also touched on the issue of the post-war Gaza, saying: “What has happened in Gaza will remain rooted in our minds as one of the worst criminal wars in modern history during which internationally-prohibited weapons have been used in a way reflecting the brutality of Israel.”
He urged the participating countries to urgently and collectively support Gaza through lifting the siege immediately and securing vital needs for its people.
In the same context, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, a political and information advisor to the Syrian president, said Monday Bashar Al-Assad delivered the most important speech at the COMCEC because he tabled effective ideas and initiatives both with regard to the regional or Muslim issues or the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Dr. Shaaban added that president Assad focused in his speech on the need to exchange and develop knowledge among the Muslim countries and to improve the organization in a way that is more dynamic and effective so that it can take action instead of making statements of condemnation.
In another context, a new Syrian aid convoy composed of 10 trucks carrying about 140 tons of medical needs, food and clothes was sent Tuesday to Gaza.
Ahmed Abdelkarim, the head of the Syrian Arab popular committee to support the Palestinian people, told Sana news agency on Wednesday that the aid of this convoy was collected from the Syrian governorates for the Gaza people to alleviate some of their suffering and pain as a result of the ongoing Israeli violations committed against them.
