RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Dr. Aziz Dwaik, the speaker of the Palestinian parliament, has warned Wednesday that the indirect negotiation with the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) that Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas agreed to was similar to the Oslo style and harms the Palestinian issue.

"The indirect negotiations with the Israelis give no hope of achieving anything positive for the Palestinian issue, and would put the Palestinian people in dark tunnels that have no end", Dwaik said in a press release on Wednesday.

He also criticized the US administration for derailing the Palestinian national reconciliation, saying, "The American stick indeed blocks the Palestinian reconciliation although many in Fatah faction wish to restore the Palestinian unity".

Dwaik also quoted the words of Jibril Al-Rejoub, the prominent leader in Fatah faction, who said that the USA threatened the PA authority with halting financial support in the event Fatah agreed to reconcile with Hamas.

The PLC speaker, furthermore, stressed that the visit of Nabil Sha'ath, member of Fatah's central committee, to the Gaza Strip and the warm welcome accorded to him by Hamas leaders there was an indication to Hamas's sincere intention to end the Palestinian political rift.

"I am optimistic that the Palestinian reconciliation is only few meters away, but I wish that Fatah would reciprocate Hamas's goodwill by halting harassing Hamas's lawmakers and cadres in the West Bank", underlined Dwaik.

Meanwhile, Dwaik deprecated the call of the illegitimate prime minister of the Ramallah authority Salam Fayyad to hold the municipal elections next July, warning that any elections held without Palestinian harmony would deepen the rift.

Colleague of Dwaik, MP Abdul Rahaman Zaidan, described Fayyad's decision as "hasty", and reveals bad intentions towards the reconciliation efforts.

He also blamed the government of Fayyad for arbitrarily dissolving elected municipal councils and installing new ones loyal to Fatah faction.

He added that there is no sense in arranging such elections without Gaza participating in it.

"How could the people of the West Bank cast their votes freely while an atmosphere of fear is spread by the PA security forces?" questioned Zaidan.

He revealed that the PA security apparatuses arrested and tortured all those who participated in Hamas's elections campaign in 2006 that Hamas overwhelmingly won.
