Higher committee on prisoners to WHO: Send fact-finding team

GAZA, (PIC)-- The higher national committee on prisoners in the Gaza Strip has asked the World Health Organization to implement its recent decision on sending a fact-finding team with the participation of the Red Cross to probe reasons for worsening health conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The committee, in a statement on Tuesday evening, said that most of the 1,600 Palestinian sick prisoners were captured while in good health then their condition deteriorated in captivity.

In this respect, the committee held the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) fully responsible for the life of Eman Ikhlil, 33, from Al-Khalil city who was transferred from jail to Meir hospital on Tuesday.

It said that Eman, who was detained a week ago, was taken in good health but was carried to hospital on the second day of her detention then again on Tuesday.

The committee noted that Ofer court decided to release Eman after paying a fine of almost 250 dollars but the IOA said she would not be released until her condition improves.

In a related context, the prisoners' center for studies said that the Israeli prisons authority was intentionally targeting Palestinian children in is jails.

The center said that 380 Palestinian children in Israeli detention were subjected to various types of physical and psychological pressures such as beatings, deprivation of education, in addition to being held in crammed cells and/or with homicide convicts.
