Khader: Fatah has succeeded in destroying the national project
[ 18/06/2010 - 02:40 PM ]
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Husam Khader, a leading Fatah figure and former member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, said that it was Fatah which decided to postpone local elections because it was not ready and that national reconciliation had nothing to do with the postponement.
In an interview with Watan television on Thursday Khader said that Fatah decided to postpone the elections after it discovered the political tribalism that exists within the movement while it was preparing for the elections.
He, added that the postponement was a Fatah decision because of the bleak reality inside the movement which has not changed after the sixth general conference.
He rejected the notion that the postponement had anything to do with the national reconciliation, describing such a notion as a lie.
He also confirmed that Hamas did not ask for a postponement of the elections, saying that Hamas did not and would not ask for such a postponement, but it wanted Fatah to go through the elections alone to justify it grip on the Gaza Strip.
Hamas's decision not to participate in the local elections has helped expose Fatah's weaknesses and "forced us to run for the elections against ourselves and deepen our internal differences," said Khader.
Khader explained that were the elections allowed to go ahead then Fatah's popular base would have been exposed because no one is taking care of it and because of the deep conflicts that exist within the organisation, adding that messages in this regard have been sent to the members of central committee "who live in their new ivory towers and know nothing about the popular base".
On democracy, Khader said that Fatah has managed to create a limping democracy because of the traditional mentality of some leaders who fear democracy more than they fear the occupation.
