Israel orders African migrants to leave or remain in prison indefinitely

A rights organization says Israel has ordered African migrants to choose between deportation and indefinite imprisonment.

The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants says Tel Aviv has begun forcing asylum seekers to leave Israel or remain in open-ended custody.

The NGO says Israel is trying to coerce migrants to self-deport to Rwanda and other countries. The threat comes despite a ruling by the Israeli High Court not to place undocumented migrants in prison indefinitely. More than 45-thousand African migrants are currently living in Israel without documents.

Human rights organizations say Israel’s actions violate international refugee conventions.
