Egypt gave voters an extra day to cast ballots for a president Tuesday, in a surprise move amid a reportedly low turnout in the first election since the overthrow of the Islamist leader.
Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the ex-army chief who toppled Islamist president Mohammad Mursi last year, is the clear frontrunner. But his campaign had hoped for a large turnout as a decisive show of support.
After reports of a meager turnout on Monday's first day of voting, his backers and sympathetic media harangued people to go and vote as Islamists had urged a boycott.
One television anchor, the ultra-nationalist Tawfiq Okasha, went as far as suggesting those who fail to vote should "be shot".
The decision to extend the voting into Wednesday was made to "give a chance to the largest possible number of voters to cast their ballots," said an electoral official.
The commission said it extended the election because of a "heatwave that resulted in a crowding of voters during the evening hours".
A comfortable win for Sisi over his sole rival, the leftist Hamdeen Sabbahi, has never been seriously in doubt.
As polling stations closed at 1800 GMT, Sabbahi slammed the extension, saying it raised "questions... about the integrity of the process".
And Sisi's campaign itself filed a complaint against the extension, it said in a statement without elaborating.
Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, subjected to a police crackdown that has killed hundreds of its supporters, called for boycott and said it would not recognise the outcome.
So too have key activists behind the 2011 uprising that toppled long-time strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011. They fear Sisi is an autocrat in the making.
The interior ministry said the first day's turnout was about 16 million out of the country's 53 million eligible voters.
Interim prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab denied there was a low turnout, saying "participation is good".
But some Cairo polling stations were deserted on Tuesday morning.
"I don't want to be part of those responsible for all those people who died," Tarek Salim told AFP at a Cairo cafe.
Another abstainer, Diaa Hussein, complained there was no real choice. "Sisi didn't leave a chance for anyone else to win," he said.
Gamal Abdel Gawad, an analyst at the American University of Cairo, said the extension was unnecessary and "affects the credibility of the election".
"When the result of an election is already known, there is very little incentive for voters to come out and vote."

The Egyptian presidential elections have entered a decisive phase as the Supreme Elections Committee officially declared May 9 as the last day to drop out from the race. While uncertainty dominated Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s campaign over his political program, which has not been officially announced, Hamdin Sabahi responded with an attack on Sisi regarding his relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Cairo: The Supreme Elections Committee announced May 9 as the last day to drop out of the presidential elections scheduled for May 26 and 27. In the meantime, the competition intensified between candidates Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Hamdin Sabahi after confirming their names will be on the ballots that will be printed within hours amid tight security.
Sisi’s campaign raised eyebrows yesterday when it deleted its electoral program from its official website. There was talk by some of the people in charge of the campaign that Sisi “will not present an electoral program with a timetable for implementing specific promises. He will instead stick to the general topics that he discusses at different events during the campaign.”
The head of the information office of Sisi’s campaign, Ahmed Kamel, explained to Al-Akhbar yesterday: “I did not say the general will not present an electoral program and I don’t know if there will be a program that will be presented to [Egyptian] citizens during the campaign. This is not my specialty, there are other people in the campaign that you can talk to.Al-Akhbartried to contact the campaign coordinator, Ambassador Karem Mahmoud, but he did not answer his phone.
Sisi’s campaign was criticized for statements made by his team that at the present moment he does not have an electoral program, even though his campaign started a week ago. Whereas his opponent, Sabahi, presented a comprehensive program that can actually be implemented and he has already started campaigning in several provinces.
Until now, Sisi’s campaign team has not posted on its official social media pages any program or big projects that Sisi intends to implement after being elected. All they did was post excerpts from his interviews and video segments from his meetings with various movements that began since Mursi was deposed.
Sisi’s campaign focused in the past two days on the popular campaigns in the streets of several provinces in support of his candidacy that were organized by the Congress Party and the National Progressive Unionist Party as well as My Homeland Egypt Party headed by former Interior Minister Ahmed Gamal al-Din. In addition, Amr Moussa is currently on a tour of the United States as part of a diplomatic campaign to rally support for Sisi’s candidacy. The president of Egypt’s student union, Mohammed Badran, will also go on a tour of Gulf countries to mobilize Egyptians living in there to vote for Sisi. The election period for Egyptians living abroad starts May 15 and goes on for four days.
Support for Hamdin Sabahi increased yesterday after a TV interview in which he answered tough questions about his life, his campaign finances and his electoral program. He criticized his opponent harshly, saying that while he opposed Mursi’s regime and considered it illegitimate, Sisi as defense minister was saluting Mursi as the commander of the armed forces.
Sabahi responded to accusations that he was allied with the Muslim Brotherhood in the 2011 parliamentary elections in an interview that succeeded in changing the opinion of some youth who had opposed him and had called for boycotting the election. The presidential candidate said that he rejected an offer from Mursi after he became president to become vice president at a time when Sisi agreed to become defense minister under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Updated 1:09 pm:Campaigning opens Saturday in Egypt for a May election likely to be won by the ex-army chief who deposed the elected president, after deadly bombings underscored tensions ahead of the vote.
The May 26-27 presidential poll, meant to restore elected rule following the July overthrow of Islamist Mohammed Mursi, is widely expected to place former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power.
His only rival, Hamdeen Sabahi, came third in the 2012 election which Mursi won, and faces a groundswell of support for Sisi since the ouster of the divisive Islamist leader.
Sabahi says he represents the ideals of the 2011 uprising that overthrew veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak.
"The policies that were present under Mubarak are the same policies present now" under the military-installed regime, Sabahi told a campaign rally in the southern city of Assiut.
"Our goal is to gain the people's trust to change the policies of corruption and tyranny and poverty," he said in remarks broadcast live on television.
Sisi, reviled by Mursi's Islamist supporters, has vowed to stamp out a surge in militant attacks such as the two bombings on Friday that killed a policeman in the capital and a soldier in the Sinai Peninsula.
At least 1,400 people, mostly Islamists, have been killed in street clashes, including hundreds on August 14 alone, while thousands have been jailed and placed on trials.
The crackdown has extended to target secular activist groups that supported Mursi's overthrow but have since turned on the army-installed military as it tightens the clamps on dissent.
Last week, a court banned the April 6 movement, which spearheaded the revolt against Mubarak. Its leader Ahmed Maher is already in prison for participating in an unlicensed protest last year.
Another court that day sentenced to death 683 people, including the Brotherhood's supreme guide Mohamed Badie, for deadly riots in August.
Sisi has not yet unveiled his election program, with campaign officials saying he wanted to wait until campaigning begins. The campaigning period ends on May 23.
He is scheduled to give his first interview in months on Monday to two Egyptian television anchors, their broadcasters announced in a statement.
