The Perfect Shampoo for a War in Syria: "The Biomen Society" for Ultimate Obedience

"Since you don’t wear a women's outfit you should not use women's shampoo! Now you have a 100 percent men's shampoo. If you are a man, you use Biomen!" says Hitler in a dubbed advertisement on Turkish TV channels. The shampoo ad explains a lot about the forced transformation or preparation of a country for a war.

On 22 July 2007, after winning a second term in government, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was on the balcony of his party's central offices, calling the cheering crowd to "raise the flags." “Now we shall say 'One nation, one country, one flag, one State!’"

Mainstream media was not even concerned with the similarity of his wording to "Ein Staat, ein Volk, ein Führer!" They were also not concerned that he said "Those who did not vote for the AKP are the other colors of the country."

My column in the daily newspaper Milliyet then argued that the PM, in his victory speech, had defined the population that didn't vote for the AKP as "the garniture of Turkey.” Like the other critics of the government, I was attacked for being against the AKP and therefore against democracy per se.
An equally evil thing in the eyes of the AKP supporters was to criticize the lawlessness of "Ergenekon operations" that began after the AKP won in the elections.

Ergenekon is a clandestine, Kemalist, ultra-nationalist organization in Turkey with alleged ties to members of the country's military and security forces. When writers, journalists, and retired generals were prosecuted for being involved with Ergenekon, most of Turkey was silent due to the general belief that the secret organization was plotting against a democratically elected authority.

Then came the local elections on 29 March 2009. The AKP's victory was not as decisive. This time in south-eastern Turkey, where the population is predominantly Kurdish, people didn’t vote for the AKP in numbers that satisfied the party. Just after the AKP's embarrassing defeat in Kurdish towns, Turkey introduced a series of "KCK operations."

In this new massive judiciary campaign the AKP's and therefore democracy's enemy was not the "Kemalist elite," but the "Kurdish terrorists." KCK was allegedly the political and urban wing of the Kurdish armed movement PKK, and Turkey had to be cleansed of every kind of anti-democratic threat, according to the government.

Waves of prosecutions continued simultaneously for Ergenekon and the KCK. The number of detainees held under the Anti-Terror Law skyrocketed. Reports of Human Rights organizations indicated that the rise in detentions was over 100 percent compared to the previous year.

Then came 12 September 2010, the date of the referendum for a partial change in the constitution. Spiced with some improvement in women’s and children's rights, the AKP's main target was the composition of the two crucial judiciary institutions, namely the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors. These two bodies had been "obstacles" for the government to operate without being tied down by the law during its first two terms in power. To beat the political opponents who were concerned with the breach of the division of powers, the government's propaganda machine was pushing: "Those who don't vote 'yes' to the constitutional amendments want the junta constitution (as the prevailing constitution was designed and accepted after the coup d’état of 1980)."

As expected, the victory of the AKP in the referendum changed the composition of the higher bodies of judiciary in favor of the government. The government gained the capacity to act without the boundaries of an independent judicial system of checks and balances. Erdoğan once more visited the balcony of victory to declare: “Our nation has said 'yes.' From now on, we go forward." So did he.
On 12 June 2011, after winning his third term with a landslide victory, the prime minister's balcony speech was sanctified as "humbly pledging for consensus for a new constitution" by the national and international mainstream media. The PM Erdoğan said: "No one should have any doubt, whether you voted for us or not, all of your beliefs and values and lifestyles are our pride."

At the time many seemed to disregard the fact that a "balcony speech" was not an institution of democracy, and "pride" was not a guarantee for freedom of speech in democracies.

Underneath his exaggerated "humbleness" the subtext of his words was more than clear. The AKP supporters were the majority in the country and rest of the political spectrum was the minority. Thus, building a consensus with those opposing views, or neglecting them altogether was subject to the prime minister's mercy.

After all, the AKP was in power to abolish the 1980 relic coup d’état constitution and to bring "advanced democracy" to Turkey. Despite the political arrests, apparently the majority of the country was still buying the "AKP is equal to democracy" rhetoric. Over 600 students, over 100 journalists, and more than 6000 Kurdish political activists were in prison, all labeled as terrorists.

The bias of the judiciary with its special courts, anti-terror laws, and prolonged detentions was obvious. After five years of Ergenekon detentions, there was not a single verdict. The KCK case was equally unproductive, except for the massive terror it created not only for Kurdish citizens but also among Turkish dissidents. The transcriptions of tapped phone conversations, or wide area monitoring records as they were appropriately dubbed, were quoted in indictments. Personal conversations of the accused were frequently leaked to the partisan media to make sure that the entire society is aware that "Big Brother" was getting even bigger everyday.

On 31 October 2011, the detentions of Professor Büşra Ersanlı and publisher Ragıp Zarakolu had been an indicator of the reach of Turkish political authority. Respected Professor Ersanlı was accused of giving lectures in The Academy of Politics for the BDP, a pro-Kurdish Party. Internationally renowned Zarakolu, who published books mainly on Armenian and Kurdish issues, was accused of being a member of KCK.

The government started receiving international criticism due to the rising numbers of jailed journalists, unionists, and politicians. International and independent human rights institutions, the European Union, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton put the issue on the table. So the government had to compromise, just a little though. A tiny bit to create a cinematographic scene of freedom and democracy.

On March 18 when two symbolic figures of the 106 journalists in jail, Ahmet Şık and Nedim Sener were released from prison, thousands in front of their TV screens were caught in between happiness and humiliation. Although they were accused of being members of the alleged terrorist organization Ergenekon, the two spent one year in prison for no reason at all except that they wrote books that explored the partisanship between the police force and intelligence service.

Thanks to a handful of courageous colleagues following Şık and Şener's case, the people of Turkey were finally convinced that at least some of the thousands of detainees under the Ergenekon and KCK cases were kept in prison without solid evidence. While their indictment was read in the courtroom and tweeted by the colleagues and lawyers, many learned that people can be prosecuted without a single accurate accusation being brought against them.

One of those university students in jail was Cihan Kırmızıgül, also known as "the keffiyeh kid.” Two years ago he happened to be in a wrong place with a wrong outfit, a keffiyeh. Ignoring the testimony of the single eye witness on the scene, the police insisted that the Galatasaray University Kurdish student was a member of terrorist organization that placed the bomb that was found in the vicinity. Kırmızıgül spent two years in jail.

During his 8th hearing on March 23, people waiting for the court's decision were once again caught in between rage and happiness when the rare miracle of justice happened. The court released Kırmızıgül pending trial. Kırmızıgül made a public statement similar to Şık's: "Now it is my turn to struggle for those who are still kept in prison for no reason."

Şık, Şener, Büşra Ersanlı, Zarakolu, Kırmızıgül are only a few names that are known by the public. Their cases have been and still are followed by relatively large audiences. That is why it was a good choice for the political authority to release them. It helped them to release some of the accumulating rage in the people at large. An efficient move in a dirty game of power where millions of people are extremely silent about the oppression of the government not only on intellectuals but also on all walks of life.

In the midst of these mass prosecutions and rare releases, the PM Erdoğan has found time to reveal their politics for "creating a new religious generation.” As he made through his statements, his perception was that if a child is not religious he is automatically a street thug or a drug addict. But it seems he has a rather specific taste even among the religious youth. He likes obedient ones which he also made sure through his other public statements. He finally heralds that "the biomen" is born through the above mentioned process:
"I want a youth that holds onto its religion! A youth that holds onto its grudge!"

After this statement, the big crowd in the AKP's youth branch annual meeting starts chanting praises for their strong, unbeatable, and indisputable leader. Not only them but also half of the country believes that he is the best choice to run the country. There are no workers’ unions making a fuss, no intellectuals criticizing the authority, no NGO's questioning the rising authoritarianism, no academics speaking of their concerns, and finally no politicians proposing a political alternative. And if someone proves the shortcomings of the prevalent “democracy,” the supporters of the leader go and hide behind the following line: “If only Tayyip Bey knew!”

Just like the 3rd Reich's most popular line: "If only the Führer knew!"
The emphasis here is not the similarity of PM Erdoğan to Hitler but rather the similarity of Turkish society to the German masses under Hitler. Whenever there is something wrong, PM Erdoğan "gives his own word" to fix it. As long as there are balconies to give public speeches and the unshakable faith in his rhetoric, Turkish democracy is safe. As long as the "biomen" that have been produced by this government are the majority, anything goes.

The numbness, one can say, is the most incurable illness in a society. The Uludere massacre happened on the Iraqi border and 35 Kurdish people died, most of them children aged between 12 and 17. Hush! The Sivas Massacre that burned 35 people alive in 1993 was a victim of statute of limitations and the perpetrators went unpunished! Hushh! All pro-bono lawyers of the Sivas massacre perpetrators had their positions in the AKP organization! Hush! Anyone who speaks against the government is under the threat of imprisonment! They raped Kurdish kids in Pozantı juvenile prison and they sent them to another prison where they are being tortured now! Hushhh! Wikileaks and Stratfor documents say that the PM has secret accounts in Switzerland! Hushh! The government created its own media and silenced the rest of the journalists! All your phones are tapped! Hushh! The symbol of evil for the whole 20th century is used as an advertisement star for a shampoo! Isn't that outrageous! Hushh!
The intellectuals of those countries that have experienced war would probably agree that the year preceding a war is worse than the war itself. The numbness, the manufactured hatred, the aversion towards criticism, the constructed state of chaos, the vanishing feeling of mercy, prevailing ignorance, the schizophrenic discourse of the authority, and the orchestrated brutality towards the outcast are all prevalent.

Recently, when PM Minister Erdoğan met US President Barack Obama in South Korea, he implied that Turkey is ready for intervention in Syria. Even though not a single country is wetting their hands for this dirty job yet, it looks like Turkey is getting ready for the unspeakable. Since the manufacture of the necessary biomen is completed and those who refused to take part in the process are in prisons, Turkey is ready to go. The bioman is not necessarily manufactured for this action per se but having a country full of biomen helps when there is a war coming.

In 2001 when the Iraq invasion was on the table, AKP worked very hard to pass a decision in the parliament to join the invasion. Then, it was impossible due to the fact that the anti-war coalition was strong in Turkey. But now? As AKP makes a dramatic change in its diplomatic discourse of "the peaceful New Ottomans of the region" and "zero-problem-with-neighbours" to "conquering force in the region" only a few courageous people have spoke out against this very dangerous development.

On April 1 the "Friends of Syria" meeting will be held in Istanbul. We shall find in the biomen newspapers the following day what our leader decided to do on the subject.

Until then hushhh!

Iran Election 2012: A slap to Zionist Bullies

On the first day of Iran’s 9th Majlis (Parliament) election, 65% of the 48 million eligible Iranian voters hit the polling stations in a move deemed as a straight message to the USrael war rhetoric. However, the final official estimates will be available on Sunday.

The high turnout is a slap to western Zionist-controlled governments (ZOGs) which funded anti-Ahmadinejad riots in June 2009. The western media had issued calls on behalf of discredited leaders of the Green movement to boycott the March elections.

Lebanese Islamic Resistance, Hizbullah in a statement issued on Saturday, praised Iranian voters for their massive turnout proving once again their dedication to the 1979 Islamic Revolution and in the leadership of Ayatullah Ali Khamenei.

On Saturday, Iran’s interior minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, announced that 135 candidates have been declared winners. The winners for the remaining 155 seats are expected to be released on Monday. Both the current Speaker of Majlis, Ali Larijani, and former Speaker of Majlis, Gholam Ali Hadad Adel, have retained their seats with largest majority.

According to the Voice of Russia, Consrvatives have won majority of the 290-seat Majlis. The seats are contested by candidates affiliated with the United Front of Consrvatives and Islamic Revolutionay Front blocs – as no political party exists in Iran. Both of the blocs are supporters of Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, the Gurdian of 1979 Islamic Revolution. The new Majlis will certainly maintain Iran’s current official stand on nuclear program and the Zionist regime.

American-Jewish Professor William Beeman (University of Minnesota) told Press TV that in the United States there are some people in some circles who felt that the sanctions on Iran would result in the Iranian people rising up and overthrowing their own government because they have been made so miserable and a number of us have pointed out how ridicules that scenario is.

When a population is under pressure from the outside, they do not rise up and overthrow their own government, they rally behind their leaders and this is, I think in this particular case when we take a look at the elections, I think we will find that the Iranian people have not been discouraged by the sanctions that have been leveled against them, but in fact have shown their patriotism and their love of their own country,” said Beeman.

Ralph Shoenman, a veteran American Jewish author and commentator in an interview with Press TV said that both the US and Israel are trying their best to discredit Iranian regime and destablize the country and dismantling its national sovereignty and national integrity. Ralph is author of the book The Hidden History of Zionism.

For his part, Journalist Sami Kleib wrote also for As-Safir saying that the strong state is the one which carries out reform and not the foreign pressures.

Reviewing the most prominent points in President al-Assad's speech, Kleib saw that the speech holds two important headlines: the security firmness and the reform determination.
Lebanese al-Binaa Newspaper said that President al-Assad's speech has constituted a massive road map for the next stage, and set prominent headlines for the situation Syria has witnessed so far, which means that the stage after the speech is different from the stage prior to it.

Former Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said that President al-Assad's speech presented a precise description to the situation in Syria including the armed attack on the people, the army and the military forces, the killing of the civilians, destroying public and private properties and intimidating the residents by armed gangs to undermine Syria's stability.

In a statement issued by Lahoud's media office, the Lebanese President pointed out to the hasty reactions on President al-Assad's qualitative speech by Israel's apparatus and supporters refer that they are determined to hatch gory conspiracy against Syria, yet they will not succeed in that.

Lebanese State Minister, Ali Qanso said that president al-Assad's speech shows his keenness on his country's unity and stability, pointing out that the USA is trying through these events to exert pressure on Syria for its pivotal role in the region.

Member of Al Wafaa Resistance Bloc, Lebanese MP Kamel Ar Rifai said that President al-Assad's speech reflects his relief over the internal situation in Syria based on linking the crisis with foreign agendas and sabotage groups.

For his part, Chairman of the Lebanese Democratic Party, MP Talal Areslan, said that President al-Assad proves everyday that he can make the crisis a basis for resistance, stressing that the Syrian people stand by their President against the sinister plots.

Hamas supporters demonstrate in Nablus in support of national reconciliation

[ 06/05/2011 - 02:49 PM ]
NABLUS, (PIC)-- Thousands of jubilant Hamas supporters demonstrated in the northern West Bank city of Nablus Thursday in support of the Palestinian reconciliation that Hamas and Fatah signed in Cairo a couple of days ago.
The demonstration of Hamas was the first ever in four years as the Movement was banned by the PA authority in Ramallah from holding any rally.
Prominent political figures of Hamas in the city headed by MP Hamid Al-Bietwai, led the demonstration that started after Maghrib prayer in the old town of the city.
In a brief speech he delivered before the jubilant Hamas supporters, Bietawi welcomed the reconciliation agreement, vowing that the Palestinian people will not allow any hand to spoil it.
Mohammed Ghazal, another Hamas political figure in the city echoed the same delightful remarks of Beitawi, calling on all Palestinian parties not to allow or bow to external pressures on them. He also stressed the need to release all political detainees in the PA jails in the West Bank.
Participants chanted for unity so that Palestinians can continue with their struggle for freedom. They also called for an end to political detention despite the intensive presence of the PA security forces during the rally.

"Most people in Damascus are with the president"

VIA FLC

DAMASCUS, Syria — ".... Even as protests spread across Syria, the capital has mostly remained quiet.... But though people in Damascus watch the events with concern, most doubt that the scenes being broadcast on television from across the country will be repeated here.... for the most part in Damascus, the heart of the Sunni business class, residents say they have too much to lose to join in...
A woman from Abbasiyeen Square in northern Damascus said that two weeks ago, protesters from the restive town of Douma came “to our doors and asked us to take to the streets...no one did because we are too scared to lose what we have. This is civil war,” she added. Like others interviewed for this article, she spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
One Christian girl in the capital said the anti-government demonstrations were the product of a foreign plot, a common view among the country’s Christian community but also a reflection of the scale of division between urban and rural Syrians. “I went home to my village in Bsier [south of Damascus] for Easter. We didn’t see anything,” she said. “The army is there to protect the people. They waved us through checkpoints and said hello.”...

Damascus has been the scene of the largest pro-regime demonstrations in the country, and many here seem to share a feeling that the broader population remains loyal to the government. But the city’s residents increasingly find themselves caught in the crossfire of a media war, unsure of whom to believe... One woman said there is no middle ground in this situation. “There is either pro- or anti-government supporters, and, of course, most people in Damascus are with the president,” she said. “There is very little logical argument taking place.”

Demonstrations Grow

Syria Comment

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Momentum is building for the opposition. The demonstrations are getting bigger with each day. They started out gathering between 100 to 300. Today’s demonstration was well over 1,000 in Deraa. The New York Times is reporting that 20,000 joined the funeral march in Deraa. The killing of four in Deraa is new. Many Syrians claim that this is the first time President Assad has drawn blood with the shooting of demonstrators. The Kurdish intifada of 2004 in the Jazeera ended with the death of many but that occurred following the successful constitutional referendum in Iraq and was blamed on external factors. To many Syrians, this time seems different.
It is unclear where this can lead as the opposition has no leadership and Syria has no organized parties. All the same, we are in a new era. If demonstrations grow to the point that security forces are overwhelmed, the situation could change rapidly. Not all regions or cities of Syria would behave the same. The top brass of the armed forces are unlikely to abandon the leadership as they did in Tunisia or Egypt; all the same, loyalties would be divided for many. The next few days will be telling. The Deraa demonstrations were sparked by the arrest of 15 children for scrawling anti-regime graffiti. It is quite possible that they government can yet regain control of the momentum and protest movement. Syria lacks an organized internal leadership that can plan and administer continued demonstrations. There is a sophisticated, even if small, leadership abroad which could coordinate events on Facebook from afar.

Dera’a Protesters calling for freedom – “Thousands of people attending the funerals of Akram al-Jawabra and Hussam Abdelwali Ayash were surrounded by large numbers of security men who fired tear gas at the mourners to disperse them”" the BBC and Reuters report.
(Reuters) - Thousands of mourners called on Saturday for “revolution” at the funeral of protesters killed by Syrian security forces, in the boldest challenge to Syria’s rulers since uprisings began sweeping the Arab world.
Security forces responded by firing tear gas to disperse crowds in Deraa, a region south of the capital where at least 10,000 people demonstrated on Saturday at the funeral of two protesters, among at least four who were killed on Friday.
“Revolution, revolution. Rise up Hauran,” chanted the mourners in Deraa, administrative capital of the Hauran plateau, as they marched behind the simple wooden coffins of Wissam Ayyash and Mahmoud al-Jawabra.
“God, Syria, Freedom. Whoever kills his own people is a traitor,” they said. Some of the mourners left a mosque and headed for the center to protest.
The two were killed when security forces opened fire on Friday on civilians taking part in a peaceful protest demanding political freedoms and an end to corruption in Syria, which has been ruled under emergency laws by President Bashar al-Assad’s Baath Party for nearly half a century.
A third man killed on Friday, Ayhem al-Hariri, was buried in a village near Deraa earlier on Saturday. A fourth protester, Adnan Akrad, died on Saturday from his wounds.
Deraa was less tense by late afternoon, with security forces using less force after a meeting at the main Omari mosque between the authorities and prominent figures in the city.
An activist who was at the meeting said officials were presented with a list of demands, most importantly for the release of political prisoners. Among them were 15 schoolchildren arrested in Deraa this month after writing slogans on walls, inspired by revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia that swept their autocratic leaders from power.
The list demands the dismantling of secret police headquarters in Deraa, dismissal of the governor, a public trial for those responsible for the killings, and scrapping of regulations requiring permission from the secret police to sell and buy property.
“If they do not respond the protests will only escalate,” the activist told Reuters.
An official statement said the interior ministry had formed a committee to investigate the “regrettable events” in Deraa.
The city is home to thousands of displaced people from eastern Syria, where up to a million people have left their homes because of a water crisis over the past six years. Experts say state mismanagement of resources has worsened the crisis.
The Hauran region, once a bread basket, has also been affected by diminishing water levels, with yields falling by a quarter in Deraa last year.
ARRESTS OF CHILDREN FUEL RESENTMENT
Protests against Syria’s ruling elite, inspired by revolts in the Arab world, have gathered momentum this week after a silent protest in Damascus by 150 people demanding the release of thousands of political prisoners…. In a move seen as an attempt to address the discontent, Assad issued a decree on Saturday shortening mandatory army conscription from 21 months to 18 months.
The long conscription period has generated discontent, especially among youth who resent state tactics to bring them into service, such as random ID checking, and the withholding of food aid from families whose members escape conscription.

Fatah militias attack women's march in Al-Khalil

[ 16/03/2011 - 10:52 AM ]

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- Members of the Fatah militias tried to disrupt a women's march in the West Bank city of Al-Khalil on Tuesday, Palestinian journalist Lama Khater has said.

The marches were designed to demand an end to the national split and the release of political prisoners detained in the West Bank.

Khater, who took part in the protests, said when the march started to draw media attention, Fatah officials began taking the names and photos of all the participants. They also confiscated the protesters' banners and ripped them up.

She added that the men forcibly removed women from the march in the Dawar al-Manara neighborhood in Al-Khalil and tried to confuse them by shouting over their chants.

”If not for intevention by the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council and Hamas MPs, clashes would have taken place between the protesters and the Fatah militias,” Khater said.

”We will remain present in the field,” Khater said addressing the militias. ”You will find us there during future events, as we're not scared of you, and the liberation of our mujahiden from your prisons is a great objective that gives us strength, certainty and confidence.”

The committee of families of political prisoners has condemned the disturbance and said it was proof of the ill intentions of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and its lack of seriousness in national reconciliation. The committee said it also proved the political prisoners and their families are the most affected by the national split.

UNRWA agrees to begin rebuilding homes in southern Gaza Strip

[ 14/03/2011 - 09:53 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- The UN Relief Works Agency has worked out a solution for Palestinians whose homes were destroyed by Israeli aggression in Rafah and Khan Younis southern Gaza Strip.

The announcement came Sunday after demonstrators sitting in at UNRWA facilities in the south increased pressure by moving protests to the agency's headquarters in Gaza city.

UNRWA has agreed to kickstart building operations by mid-May this year.

Protesters were complaining of a recent sharp decline in services and procrastination by UNRWA.

Since the intifada began in 2000, Israel has destroyed more than 2,700 homes in Rafah governorate housing more than 3,700 families. Thousands of other homes have been destroyed partially or sustained major damages.
