Torture in US Prisons

In March 2005, a UK Deborah Davis Channel 4 report titled, "Torture, Inc., America's Brutal Prisons" highlighted the horrors, including prisoners savaged by dogs, brutally shocked with cattle prods, burned by toxic chemicals, harmed by stun guns, beaten, stripped naked and abused in various other ways. Sound familiar? Welcome to mainland Guantanamo.

"It's terrible to watch some of the videos," witnessing torture, at times resulting in death. Routinely, guards yell at and abuse prisoners, "ordering them to lie on the ground and crawl." If they don't "drop to the ground fast enough, a guard kicks him or stomps on his back." Another man screams when a dog bit his lower leg.

One other has a broken ankle, can't crawl fast enough so gets jabbed with a stun gun on his buttocks. Hours later his whole body still shakes. Men line up across the cellblock, guards standing over them shouting, prodding, kicking, and beating, their humiliation captured on video. The images are horrifyingly brutal, reminders of Guantanamo and Baghdad's Abu Ghraib. They're as commonplace in America, but unreported except by Channel 4 UK, calling it "wholesale torture taking place inside the US prison system," uncovered by a four-month investigation, not based on rumor or suspicion. Throughout America, videos and other solid evidence confirm it, what US major media reports won't reveal.

In most states, prison regulations mandate that guards videotape "use of force operations" like cell searches, in theory to show proper procedures were used. Most often, they reveal otherwise, clear evidence of inmate abuses - "a shocking insight into the reality of life inside" US prisons. Even the best of them are harsh, the worst hellish, Davis explaining that videos are "terrible" to watch, saying:

"you're not only seeing torture in action but, in the most extreme cases, you are witnessing young men dying. In one horrible scene, a naked man, passive and vacant, is seen being led out of his cell by prison guards. They strap him into a medieval-looking device called a 'restraint chair.' His hands and feet are shackled. There's a strap across his chest. His head rolls forward. He looks dead. He's not. Not yet."

He's being punished for having a pillowcase on his head in his cell and refusing to remove it. Why? He has a long history of schizophrenia, yet he's restrained for 16 hours. Two hours later, "he dies from a blood clot resulting from his barbaric treatment....We found 20 (other cases of) prisoners who've died in the past few years" after being brutally restrained, what American media won't report.

Two deaths were in Phoenix, AR county jail, run by "America's Toughest Sheriff," Joe Arpaio. "You don't want to be fettered in one of Sheriff Joe's jails." His toughness often ends tragically.

In one tape, nine deputies manhandle Charles Agster, a tiny man, a mentally disturbed drug user, arrested for disturbing the peace. Restrained in a chair, one deputy kneeled on his stomach, "pushing his head forward on to his knees and pulling his arms back to strap his wrists to the chair. Bending someone double for any length of time" can cause "positional asphyxia."

After 15 minutes, he's unconscious. He's already brain dead. Hospitalized, he expired three days later.

Another tape showed guards severely beating a man, Scott Norberg, including Tasering him 19 times and forcing him into a restraint chair. He suffocated.

Other inmates suffered similar abuse, including beatings causing broken bones, a broken neck, and internal injuries. One man died from septicaemia (blood poisoning) after a month in a coma.

In some tapes, sounds are as "unbearable" as images, a Florida prison one showing an inmate lying on a hospital examination table, guards ordering him to get into a wheelchair. "I can't, I can't," he shouts. "It hurts," after which he's Tasered on both hips, screams, but still can't get into the wheelchair.

Guards force him into it, bend his legs painfully, the man shrieking in agony. His lawyer said he's mentally impaired, has a back injury, can't walk, or bend his legs without intense pain. Yet guards try to make him stand and hold a walker. "He falls on the floor, crying in agony." He's Tasered again, lying there out of breath and energy, just moaning.

Other tapes show prisoners handcuffed, brutally beaten, kicked in the head, Tasered, while other guards "just stand around and watch." Photographs collected were also horrific, showing prisoners doused with pepper spray, "then left to cook in the burning fog of chemicals." one image revealed a man with "a huge patch of raw skin over his hip." Another is covered in an angry rash across his neck, back and arms. A third has deep burns on his buttocks.

"Fire extinguisher" sized pepper spray canisters are used, at times inflicting second degree burns all over prisoners' bodies. For those targeted, "The tell-tale sign is they turn off the ventilation fans in the unit," and shove cardboard in door cracks to make units air-tight.

On man on death row for killing a prison guard was brutally beaten to death. He began writing to Florida newspapers about prison brutality and corruption. "So a gang of guards stormed into his cell to shut him up. They broke almost every one of his ribs, punctured his lung, smashed his spleen and left him to die."

Several guards later tried for murder were acquitted. The warden was promoted to head of all Florida prisons. The few guards willing to discuss what goes on have a "siege mentality. They see themselves outnumbered, surrounded by dangerous, violent criminals, so they back each other up, no matter what....it solidifies into a general climate of acceptance among the many." Even decent staff do their best under hard circumstances. Ratting means getting themselves in trouble, maybe abused or fired.

As for inmates, "the notion of rehabilitation has been almost lost. The focus is entirely on punishment," the harsher the better based on examples like the above. They're not the exception. They're more the rule in federal, state and local prisons.

Davis said contact was maintained with families and prisoner rights groups. As a result, "Every single day come more emails full of fresh horror stories," showing inmate treatment domestically like at Guantanamo and other torture prisons, guards brutalizing them with impunity.

"Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo - or even Texas. The prisoners and all guards may vary, but the abuse is still too familiar," one of many of America's dirty secrets.

America's Gulag - The World's Largest Prison Population

On December 8, 2009, US Justice Department Bureau of Justice Statistics reported over 2.4 million imprisoned Americans at yearend 2008. They include inmates in federal and state facilities, local jails, Indian, juvenile, and military ones, US territories, and numbers held by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In addition, another 7.3 million are under correctional supervision, and 13 million pass through US prisons and jails annually. Half are for non-violent offenses. Half of those are drug-related. In 1980, 40,000 drug offenders were imprisoned. Today, it's over 500,000 because of the "war on drugs," that's part of the war on civil liberties.

Since 1970, America's prison population grew eightfold, not for more crime, for getting "tough" on it against more people getting longer sentences under extremely harsh conditions. Recent Center for Economic Policy Research figures compare America's incarceration rate per 100,000 population with other OECD countries in 2008/2009, showing the following:

-- Iceland 44

-- Japan 63

-- Denmark 66

-- Finland 67

-- Norway 70

-- Sweden 74

-- Switzerland 76

-- Ireland 85

-- Germany 90

-- Italy 92

-- Belgium 94

-- France 96

-- South Korea 97

-- Austria 98

-- Netherland 100

-- Portugal 104

-- Greece 109

-- Canada 116

-- Australia 134

-- Slovakia 151

-- Hungary 152

-- England and Wales 153

-- Luxembourg 155

-- Turkey 161

-- Spain 162

-- New Zealand 197

-- Czech Republic 206

-- Mexico 209

-- Poland 224

-- America 753 - the highest percentage in the world, higher than Russia at 629, and a total prison population four times China's with its fourfold higher population.

Worse still, America's incarceration rate from 1880 through 1980 held steady for over 100 years. It then skyrocketed over the past 30 while crime rates stabilized or fell - a shocking indictment of a criminally unjust system, filling beds for the prison-industrial complex, around 8% in prisons-for-profit, the population comprised of two-thirds Blacks and Latinos.

They're victimized by get tough on crime policies, racist drug laws, mandatory minimums, one size fits all, three strikes and you're out, a guilty unless proved innocent mentality, being in America undocumented, and Muslims for their faith, ethnicity, prominence, or charity to the wrong recipients, those unjustly called terrorists.

Sexual Abuse and Treatment of Women

About 200,000 women are incarcerated in US federal, state, local and immigrant detention prisons, nearly 10% of America's prison population. In its Fact Sheet - Sexual Assault and Misconduct Against Women in Prison, Amnesty International (AI) explained that:

"The imbalance of power between inmates and guards involves the use of direct physical force and indirect force based on the prisoner's total dependency on officers for basic necessities and the guards' ability to withhold privileges. Some women are coerced into sex for favors such as extra food or personal hygiene products, or to avoid punishment."

Daily they're affected by:

Powerlessness and Humiliation:

Male guards and other prison officials abuse women by rape, other sexual assault, sexual extortion, and random body searches. They also watch them undress, take showers or use toilets. Women who complain face brutal recrimination.

Retaliation and Fear:

Guards use inmates' personal history files, including prior complaints, to enforce silence by threatening visitation rights, other privileges and at times punishment.

Impunity:

Abuses go unpunished by ignoring them, guilty guards and officials transferred to other facilities, or inmates relocated instead.

Blame the Victim:

Like men, women are victimized by the war on drugs, especially those of color.

Medical Neglect:

Women are denied essential resources and treatment, especially reproductive care when pregnant, or for treatable diseases. Also for chronic and degenerative ones, exacerbating them as a result. The common attitude is they're prisoners. Who cares!

In addition, few qualified staff means long delays and inferior treatment, compounded by overall indifference. Other problems include facilities charging inmates, shackling during treatment, not addressing substance abuse, and inadequate mental health services. Prisoners have no rights whatever, staff given impunity to abuse them freely.

Discrimination Based on Race:

Black women are eight or more times likely than Caucasians to be imprisoned, their numbers comprising about half the female population, mostly for drug-related or other nonviolent offenses.

Latina women experience four times the incarceration rate as whites. State and federal laws mandate minimum sentences for all drug "offenders," eliminating judicial discretion to excuse first-timers or refer others to counseling or other non-punitive programs.

Further, crack cocaine is the only illegal substance mandating prison for first time possession, disproportionately affecting Blacks, their common drug of choice.

Simple first-time powder cocaine possession is a misdemeanor, punishable at most up to one year in prison. For crack, however, it's five years, Blacks accounting for 84% of convictions in 2000, Hispanics 9% and Whites 6%.

Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation:

Juror perceptions are especially biased against gay, lesbian or transgender defendants, compounded during imprisonment when guards and officials act more abusively against a perceived lifestyle they reject.

All inmates are powerless, women most of all, making them especially vulnerable to abuse, including rape and other forms of sexual assault, despite federal and state laws criminalizing forced or nonconsensual acts. Yet they repeatedly happen, many unreported for fear of recrimination or inability to provide proof. Other times out of shame or expectation that charges will be scoffed at.

In addition, women at times reporting them are isolated, ostensibly for safety, but the effect takes a physical and emotional toll. According to Deborah Golden, staff attorney for the DC Prisoners' Project of the Washington Lawyer' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, many women don't view sex as an abuse. Most experienced sexual and other physical mistreatment before prison, reports Sarah From, Women's Prison Association public policy director.

In 2004, AI reported nearly 2,300 sexual abuse cases against men and women, the true totals far higher according to experts believing the problem is systemic and growing.

According to a 2007 Bureau of Justice Statistics report titled, "Sexual Victimization in State and Federal Prisons Reported by (male and female) Inmates," 4.5% of prisoners (108,000) reported being abused in the past year - also grossly understated because most incidents aren't reported. In addition, they're equally common against men and women, Human Right Watch saying at least 140,000 males are raped during incarceration.

In her 2006 paper titled, "Sexual abuse of women in United States prisons: a modern corollary of slavery," Brenda Smith compared the similarities, explaining that
custody is the common thread even though, unlike slaves, prisoners ostensibly have rights under Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment, the Thirteenth Amendment outlawing slavery and involuntary servitude, and US law.

Abuse, however, remains unchecked, Angela Davis calling prison rape "an institutionalized component of punishment behind prison walls," men, women, and children victimized. Further, they're almost never provided mental health services to handle trauma, nor are guards given proper training or mandates to prevent sex crimes in the first place. This issue was addressed by the 2003 Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the first federal law regarding sexual assault on prisoners, aiming to curb it through a "zero-tolerance" policy, as well as research and information gathering.

It calls for developing national standards to prevent, detect, reduce and punish sexual assault, making data on them more available to administrators, and holding officials and guards more accountable for their actions. But laws without enforcement are hollow, prisoner rights historically America's lowest priority. Those incarcerated are society's most abused and mistreated, especially vulnerable women out of sight behind bars.

Male Rape in Prison

Against women or men, rape inflicts pain and suffering. As a result, human rights and humanitarian groups as well as international courts now recognize it as torture. Most US states define it as forced, nonconsensual sex. California's law mirrors others saying:

It's sexual intercourse carried out "against a person's will by means of force, violence, duress, menace, or fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury on the person or another." It's also when "the perpetrator threatens to use public authority to imprison, arrest, (otherwise punish), or deport the victim or another, and the victim reasonably believes the perpetrator is a public official."

This article focuses on torture against men and women, inflicted by prison guards and officials. Male rape is generally inmate-on-inmate. As a result, the topic is covered briefly, very much deserving detailed discussion in a separate article.

In April 2001, Human Rights Watch (HRW) published a report titled, "No Escape: Male Rape in US Prisons," citing studies showing about one in five men raped at least once during confinement. Documenting it with dozens of first-and accounts, HRW explained its long-lasting effects, including depression, PTSD, and HIV-AIDS, one victim saying:

"I remained in shock and paralyzed in thought for two days until I was able to muster the courage to report it. This is the most dreadful and horrifying experience of my life."

According to HRW, "Rape is not an inevitable consequence of prison life, but it certainly is a predictable one if little is done to prevent it and punish it." Indifference to prisoner rights perpetuates it against vulnerable men, women and children.

Prolonged Isolated Confinement

A previous article addressed it, accessed through the following link:

http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2010/04/harmful-effects-of-prolonged-isolated.html

In Supermax and other prisons, inmates compare long-term isolation to being buried alive. It also contributes to anti-social behavior and mental illness, experts saying punitive sensory deprivation changes behavior for the worst by crushing the human spirit, mind and body. Yet 80,000 or more Americans languish in isolation in US federal, state and local prisons. Over time, living in windowless cells with no human contact for 23 hours a day causes:

-- severe anxiety;

-- panic attacks;

-- lethargy;

-- insomnia;

-- nightmares;

-- dizziness;

-- irrational anger, at times uncontrollable;

-- confusion;

-- social withdrawal;

-- memory loss;

-- delusions and hallucinations;

-- mutilations;

-- profound despair and hopelessness;

-- suicidal thoughts;

-- paranoia; and

-- for many, a totally dysfunctional state and inability ever to live normally outside of confinement.

A Final Comment

An earlier article discussed "Torture As Official US Policy," accessed through the following link:

http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2008/07/torture-as-official-us-policy.html

It addressed post-9/11 Bush administration policies in prisons like Guantanamo and others abroad, explaining the systemic use of prohibited interrogation practices, excluding only those causing organ failure.

Legalized restraints remain ignored, permitting cruel and unusual punishment. Yet it routinely occurs domestically, out of sight and mind behind bars, many nonviolent and innocent inmates brutalized and forever affected.

The Sentencing Project.org says America's criminal justice system "fall(s) short of meeting its international human rights obligations," in accordance with established international law. Systemic prison torture is the clearest example.

Damascus Last reconciliation Hamas and Fatah meeting resulted in nothing because of Fatah's intransigent attitude towards the security file.

Details on last talks between Hamas, Fatah in Damascus disclosed

[ 14/11/2010 - 09:55 AM ]

DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- An informed source told the Palestinian information center (PIC) some details about what happened in the last reconciliation meeting on Wednesday between Hamas and Fatah delegations in Damascus, which resulted in nothing because of Fatah's intransigent attitude towards the security file.

The source said that head of Hamas's political bureau Khaled Mishaal met on Friday with head of Fatah delegation Azzam Al-Ahmed and discussed with him what happened in the second round of the reconciliation meeting.

The source denied that Mishaal handed during this meeting Hamas's remarks on the security file as Al-Ahmed claimed later, adding that these remarks were Hamas's response to the changes which director of Fatah's intelligence Majed Faraj tried to add to Egypt's reconciliation paper during the last meeting between the delegations.

Fath refused the formation
of the higher security commission
 according to a national consensus
He stated that Faraj refused the formation of the higher security commission according to a national consensus and insisted it is formed by de facto president Mahmoud Abbas, although Fatah agreed in its meeting with Hamas officials on September 24 to involve all Palestinian factions in its formation.

The source also said that Fatah's intelligence director surprisingly identified the reform of the security apparatuses as the rebuilding of the security headquarters which were demolished in Gaza, affirming that Fatah does not want to make any changes to its security apparatuses in the West Bank.

As for the next meeting, Fatah's revolutionary council will convene later this month to discuss the latest development on the national reconciliation before agreeing with Hamas on a date for a next round of meetings, according to the source.

For his part, senior Hamas official Ayman Taha denounced head of Fatah delegation Azzam Al-Ahmed for falsely accusing Hamas of derailing the reconciliation talks in Damascus.

Taha asserted that Fatah was the party which thwarted the meeting when it refused to meet the terms of Egypt's paper which stipulates the formation of a "joint security commission" overseeing the work of the Palestinian security apparatuses in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

"The meeting was adjourned because we were not ready to lose the Palestinian dialog after Fatah disrupted it and refused the terms of Egypt's paper related to the security file, he underscored.

Hamas representative in Lebanon Osama Hamdan also criticized Fatah's accusation that his Movement frustrated the reconciliation talks in Damascus as "unfortunate," saying that Fatah was the party which suspended the talks on the security file.

In a televised statement, Hamdan stressed that if Hamas had not been ready to discuss the security file, it would not have held the last meetings in this regard with Fatah in Damascus, noting that Hamas's refusal to sign Egypt's reconciliation paper was because it excluded what was agreed upon previously between the two parties.

IS AMERICAN PUBLIC ABOUT TO TOSS ISRAEL?

Some opinion analysts, like the 2009 Zogby International poll of American attitudes toward Israelis and Palestinians, express surprise with what they are learning from the American public and detect significant changes in American public attitudes favoring US disengagement from Israel

Exclusive to Al Manar

Ever so slowly over the past two decades, and gaining momentum since the April 2002 Israeli destruction of the West Bank town of Jenin, American attitudes toward Israel appear to be changing according to some public opinion analysts.

The American Public Opinion and U.S. Foreign Policy polling unit, that works  on behalf of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations  has argued that the American opinion shift accelerates with each perceived Israeli  outrage such as the saturation bombing of much of south Lebanon and south Beirut during the July 2006 war,  the massive civilian slaughter,  more than one-third women and children  in Gaza during the winter of 2008/9,  the May 2010 murders and carnage committed against  the Mavi Marmara, including  the assassination of 19 year old American Furkan Dogan,  and the cumulative effect of a half century of Geneva Convention and international law  violations  by Israel against  occupied Palestine and Lebanon.

Some opinion  analysts, like the 2009 Zogby International poll of American attitudes toward Israelis and Palestinians, express surprise with what they are learning from the American public and detect significant changes in American public attitudes favoring US disengagement from Israel.

Such changes in attitudes are not yet evident in Congress or in the Office of the Vice President. But then, as one of Biden’s Democratic Congressional colleagues from Cleveland Ohio, just recently reelected and now planning to force a Congressional vote on withdrawing from Afghanistan noted this week, “Joe’s a nice fella but a God awful slow learner! Cracks and fissures are shooting around and inside Joe’s great American pro Israel public opinion vase etched  in gold with the words:  ‘US Support for Israel Must Continue Forever!”

The NYT’s Tom Friedman seemed to concur during meetings in Israel recently:  “US support for Israel could shatter like Humpty Dumpty– and it could get ugly…You are losing the American people who believe me, are fed up with the Mideast in general. But they’re also fed up with Israel. When they see their president working hard to try to tee up an opportunity. …”
And you say ‘No, first pay me – let Jonathon Pollard out of jail, have Abu Mazen sing Hatikva in perfect Yiddish, and then we’ll think about testing.’  It rubs a lot of Americans the wrong way.”

Changes of  US  citizens  attitudes toward Israel are evident in Lebanon also. Hundreds of Americans and other foreigners have visited Shatila and other Palestinian refugee Camps in Beirut in the past few years according to the Sabra Shatila Foundation that  conducts tours of the camp. Many visiting Americans have been surveyed by various firms and the results mirror recent surveys from the States. Several explanations are being offered by pollsters for the developing American public opinion shift away from support for Israel.

One is the growing  perception  that Israel, despite its consistent claims of self defense and accidents, when it attacks and kills civilian populations, is in fact the aggressor and lacks respect for non Jewish lives.

Growing American revulsion at  the increasing incidents of  verbal assaults on Arabs and Muslims, and racist hate speech graffiti by the Israeli public , internet defamation  by elements of the US Israel lobby,  and seeming encouragement by Israeli  officials and some Rabbi’s  ensconced  among the more than 100 illegal colonies in occupied Palestine.

Two  often mentioned examples are:

1) The followers of the  late Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu who  regularly broadcast his calls that: “All of the Palestinians must be killed; men, women, infants, and even their beasts”.

2) And  Rabbi Yizhak Shapiro, who lately published the book The King’s Torah, in which he detailed the “jurisprudence” sanctioning the killing of Palestinian infants and children. The White House has reportedly been surprised by the number of Americans objecting to, or even knowing about, these kinds of  outrageous and immoral US funded extremists that has been going on for half a century.
  • Americans are becoming weary of Israel constantly moving the goal post in the “peace negotiations ” and Israeli officials undercutting the American President and flaunting their power in Congress and using the US-Israel lobby and media juggernaut to ridicule him.  When Obama condemns Israeli settlement building and calls for suspension, within days, Israel often announces more settlement construction, often claiming mere coincidence.
  • A growing belief among the American public that Israel takes  the US for granted and  is only interested in its own  economic and military benefits at American expense.   Just this week, President Obama criticized Israel for announcing another stage in the approval process of 1,300 housing units in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze’ev and Har Homa.  He warned:  “This kind of activity is never helpful when it comes to peace negotiations.  I’m concerned that we’re not seeing each side making the extra effort involved to get a breakthrough.”
Israel’s reaction was immediate, condemnatory and harsh.  Knesset Members as well as AIPAC staff attacked President  Obama, saying that he is ignoring the reality of Israel’s needs in Jerusalem.

MK Avi Dichter,  told the Jerusalem Post that the American people are smart enough to  “understand that there is no chance that Jerusalem will return to the 1967 borders. But they are either not smart enough or still  don’t understand  that the most sensitive part of the negotiations is Jerusalem.  For their President to deal with Jerusalem at the beginning of negotiations is a recipe for failure.”

Bar Ilan University professor Ehud Gilboa  added that he does not think Obama will “lay off” Israel in the near future. “I believe he has an obsession with Israel. He will want to get the talks between Israel and the Palestinians  going only because he wants to be remembered in history as the one who is signed on the peace agreement. We expect him to be a one term President and I don’t think  he warrants being taken seriously.”

More Americans appear to be  tiring of Israeli officials telling them they don’t understand  how to view Israeli land confiscations, ethnic cleansing and use of American cash and weapons.

One poll conducted during October 2010 of Americans living in Beirut  asked about  Israeli PM Netanyahu calling  the United Nations’ Goldstone Report  “a modern day blood libel.”

Only 4% of the Americans  believed this.  But 85% believed that Israel manipulates this term and also the Nazi crimes against Jews during WW II to justify its occupation and treatment of Palestinians.

Opinion analysts at Rasmussen Polls Delaware  believe changes in US public attitudes are also  due to the collapsing American economy. The US public is getting angry, loud and distressed. Perhaps always a little paranoid, it is more despondent  and pessimistic.

Americans have generally believed in the country’s capacity for regeneration, that a new awakening is possible at any time. Now,  63 percent of Americans don’t believe that they will be able to maintain their current standard of living. American companies like Apple and Coca-Cola, Google and Microsoft are putting their money, not in the US but in Asia, where labor is cheap and markets are growing. The US government’s debt now exceeds 90 percent of the gross domestic product and more than half of all Americans don’t believe that the America Dream is still realistic but rather that their country is dysfunctional and its Congress corrupt.

It is not sure how the Tea Party will ultimately view Israel being given annually a total of approximately $ 5 billion and then investing approximately 60% of it in interest bearing accounts while every penny of the US taxpayer money it gets  must be borrowed by Washington with US taxpayers paying the interest on cash gift to Israel.

Isolationism and xenophobia are on the rise with growing numbers of Americans unhappy with what they see as Israeli “shenanigans at US taxpayer expense”, according to a Congressional staffer recently warned about speaking out against US aid to Israel  to fellow staffers during a recent ‘brown bag’ lunch in the Cannon Congressional  House Office building cafeteria.

The same source explained:  “ We’ve got two criminal wars, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, that have cost this country, in real terms more than two trillion. The government debt continued to grow, from 57 percent of GNP in 2000 to 83 when Obama got elected and the  national debt of $13.8 trillion and growing by the hour. That  amounts to 94 percent of GNP, and in two years it will exceed 100 percent.  We can’t afford Israel financially and never could afford them morally, politically or what they have done with American weapons!”.

Likely Republican Majority leader Eric Cantor, one of the three key leaders of the Israel lobby in Congress is reportedly terrified that the Tea Party will insist, as rumored, on enacting Legislation that terminates foreign aid of all kinds if the U.S. unemployment level rises above 4-percent. Consideration would be given to restarting foreign aid when the unemployment level drops below 4-percent and remains below 4-percent for 12 months. Cantor must figure out how to protect Israel’s cash with having the Tea Party come after him. It may be recalled that Cantor is floating an AIPAC scheme to take US funds of Israel out of Foreign Aid and call it “Homeland Security”  expenditures, “ in order to save it from foreign aid cutting zealots.”

Public opinion analysts are increasingly seeing that  the American public wants to distance itself  from Israel.  But it is unlikely  that Congress will, in the short term, follow the public’s lead.  This conclusion is supported by the just passed congressional amendments that authorized the increase of U.S. weaponry, ammunition and war supplies stored in Israel to a record $1.2 billion, Defense News reported this week.. The value of U.S. weapons to be prepositioned in Israel will reach $1 billion in 2011, with another $200 million added in 2012.

Once the weaponry arrives, the amount of U.S.-owned  materiel available for Israel’s emergency use will have jumped threefold since 2007. Over the past two years, logisticians and war planners from U.S.

European Command and the Israel Defense Forces elevated war stocks to the  then Congressionally authorized threshold of $ 800 of equipment. Ready for Israel’s next war against Lebanon or Syria or Iran-or all three countries.

One pro-Israel group dismayed by the shift in American public opinion is the  Anti-Defamation League (ADL) which sounded the alarm this week at  the Canadian governments sponsored  Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA)  held at Parliament in Ottawa “to inspire parliamentary action against anti-Semitism around the world.”

Fifty countries from six continents sent delegations to help combat what ADL’s Abe Foxman, claims is a dangerous softening of US public opinion for Israel.  The conference adopted an Ottawa Protocol on Combating Anti-Semitism — building on the 2009 London Declaration on Combating Anti-Semitism of 2009, which has built on more than 50 similar initiatives over the past 98 years since ADL was launched in 1913. ADL’s current focus, according to  Christopher Wolf, who chairs ADL’s Internet Task Force on “cyber hate”, is” to take the lead and show the American public why they must stick with Israel during these days of Islamist terror against Americans and their only reliable ally, Israel.”

One of Abe Foxman’s problems is that many Americans are distancing themselves  from ADL’s nonstop “fear and smear” campaigns. Another is that history, along with the American public, is accelerating its rejection of the Zionist colonial enterprise in Palestine.

GORDON DUFF: WHO SPEAKS UP FOR HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS

camp survivors
WHAT WOULD THE REAL CAMP SURVIVORS TELL US?
November 13, 2010 posted by Gordon Duff · 21 Comments

AS MANY AS 90% OF THOSE CLAIMING TO BE HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS MAY BE FRAUDS

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor

Last week, 17 men were arrested in New York for defrauding Germany out of $42 million in payments to phony holocaust survivors.

Tens of thousands of American Jews had filed for pensions from Germany claiming to be concentration camp survivors.  All swore they had been in the camps, told stories about gas chambers, human skin lampshades and such but not a single one had been in a camp at all.  The state of Israel claims to have, alive today, nearly one million holocaust survivors.

As many as 90% of these may well be, not only frauds but many could easily be former concentration camp guards themselves, far more likely than surviving death camps.  What better place to hide than Israel?

With numbers of camp survivors going up each year, we tend to forget we are talking about death camps.  There were few survivors and most of them died immediately after the war.  Those alive were found dying and couldn’t be saved, and most of them weren’t Jews but rather Russians, Gypsies, Communists, trade unionists and anti-Fascists.

Look at the numbers.  There were only 5.3 million Jews listed as living in Europe, outside the USSR, in 1940.  In a rough average, 12 death camps, filled to the brim with gas chambers and crematoriums ran 24 hours a day for 1000 days.  Some are said, in testimony of literally thousands, to have killed from 17,000 to 20,000 per day.  Lets use the figure, 10,000 per day times 12 camps times 1000 days. =(120 Million???)

Where do a million survivors come from?  I can see a thousand, ten thousand but not 30,000 and certainly not the 15 million necessary to justify the current number of claimed survivors according to typical actuarial tables for healthy adults of the period, those who were not starved and tortured for years.  Look at Vietnam veterans.  Only 700,000 of 2.9 million survive 35 years after the war.  Something is wrong here.

STOLEN VALOR

There are laws in the United States that punish people who wear military medals they didn’t earn or claim other such honors.  When veterans discover someone claiming falsely to have served in war, that individual is arrested but also publicly humiliated.  They are hunted down like dogs.

There are concentration camp survivors living in America, people who suffered incomprehensibly at the hands of the Nazis.  However, there are also, in America we now know, tens of thousands or more who claim falsely to be of the heroic numbers from that period and numbers inside Israel that are unimaginable.  Why are these people not punished?

As a Vietnam veteran, I share a common problem with others.  For 4 decades, I met veteran after veteran, many were children when the war ended, but each claims some honor tied to military service based on a movie or television show.  I have met, over the years, hundreds of such individuals, many at meetings of veterans organizations.  I don’t find it horrible or destructive but it is disturbing and I won’t even remotely begin comparing service in Vietnam with the experience of a death camp.

LAST WEEK

Last week, authorities announced that those who had wrongly filed for benefits had been fooled somehow.  I can see fooling someone as to whether they had seen a televisions show or not but there is only one American I can think of who imagined he had been in a death camp who hadn’t and that was President Ronald Reagan and he only claimed to have visited.  Reagan’s error was based on dementia, not profit or gain.  Not it seems, not only do we have tens of thousands of people who have a single false memory, they seem to remember years of horror, incredible detail and all of it is utterly false.  There is no comparison, not with Reagan, not with Vietnam veterans, not with anyone.

Reagan’s error, despite he respect he is held in and his obvious illness, was been used to defame him countless times.  His error was not only honest but done in the context of human feeling.  How many of the others are lying, not only for financial gain but for something less wholesome?

Why then, in the name of all that is holy, did the authorities and news media immediately write this off as tens of thousands of cases of minor lapses in judgement rather than one of the most horrible moral crimes of all time?
There is no greater disrespect for a holocaust victim than this.

REVISIONISTS AND DENIERS

Two thousand people in Europe are in prison today for questioning some part, no matter how minor, of the holocaust.  The official story of the holocaust is a compendium of testimony of several hundred thousand people as there was little physical evidence left at the end of the war.  Some facilities were reconstructed based on testimony, for historical perspective but in general, it is believed that the Germans destroyed all evidence of death camps and mass graves when they learned they were losing the war.

Thousands of those who find this explanation unsatisfactory and had chosen to disagree, some noted historians, some scientists and some simple troublemakers and activists, have been imprisoned.  At the trials, holocaust victims claimed that such questioning harmed them irreparably.  However, not one holocaust victim has ever spoken up about the endless numbers of phony holocaust victims who besmirch them every day and have for nearly 65 years.  Why is that?

One thing the revisionists claim is that almost every story from the holocaust, including notable books and even world famous holocaust survivors are, in actuality, the worst phonies of all.  The analogy of the “phony veteran” is applicable here.  After each war, endless numbers of those, who for reasons legitimate or not, felt their contribution to the war effort was less than honorable or noteworthy, claim accomplishments they  are undeserving of.  It is also known that combat veterans are seldom seen on bar stools at service organizations talking about heroic exploits.
In fact, as Americans are learning more and more each day, combat veterans have great difficulty surviving coming home and are often homeless, incarcerated and commit suicide in huge numbers.  It would be easy to extrapolate the same for holocaust survivors.  There is no greater potential cause of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the history of mankind than the concentration camps of World War 2.  Not only would survivors kill themselves out of guilt, most would suffer greatly shortened lifespans.  This has been amazingly well documented.

This being the case, only a few hundred holocaust survivors could be alive today, not the one million living in Israel.

HONESTY AND TRUTH

Anyone imprisoned wrongly, anyone whose family was killed or whose assets were seized illegally, should be compensated.  Anyone wrongly claiming to be part of a group they are not, one this unique in the history of mankind, deserves punishment.  Why is this not done?  Why is there no normal social pressure to “out” these people and defend the honor of holocaust survivors?

Has anyone ever asked a real holocaust survivor what it is like to see phonies continually on television talking about the holocaust?  Do they forgive?  We will never know, as it seems nobody cares about real holocaust survivors.  The holocaust is brought up when Israel bombs a school or asks for foreign aid but as for the people themselves, these misuses of the suffering of some cheapen human misery and the human condition.

NEVER AGAIN, WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN?

If one child was taken away, died in a gas chamber, typhus, shot, it doesn’t matter, one life, this is a holocaust.  If it was done because of race, the crime is doubly evil in nature.   The lesson of “never again” was meant to be a lesson for all mankind to treat every single life with the same honor and respect, not to use the suffering of some as an excuse for financial crime, self delusion or outrageous acts of aggression.

Instead, the holocaust has become theatre, a stage for two sides to debate, to play, to “lawyer” the world to death.  Some feel they should fight the holocaust because it has become a tool of evil.  Some defend it because it is a tool of evil also but they believe the world is evil and only evil men are meant to survive.

Picture the death of a single child.  Then go to the trial of a “holocaust denier.”  Who is evil?  Who is good?  Do any of them ever think of the single child or only how it died, who signed what or how many Palestinian children could be murdered just like that child, in that child’s name perhaps?

THE REAL WAR

Why ask the question if 6 million Jews died?  It is equally possible that 6 million Germans died in the Ukraine and Europe, not soldiers, not in air raids, but in a holocaust type extinction.  This is not talked of but it happened.  All of us, Jews, Germans, the west, all of us, were silent when Josef Stalin killed twice that number or more.  It started before the war and continued after.  The human suffering caused by Stalin was immeasurable but is never spoken of, barely touched on except by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and now his books are banned.  They fail to conform to popular mythology.

There was nothing pure about the real war as there is nothing pure about wars today.  The myths we may or may not make up to protect some are never really to protect anyone.  The weak and vulnerable are never protected, only the powerful.  This is how the powerful become such and remain that way.  We are such liars.

Nobody ever cared about the holocaust survivors only what using their suffering would bring in honor and riches.  Is this the truth?  Is this the partial truth?  Has anyone asked the hard questions, the real questions?  Isn’t it time that all the survivors got together?  Some voice is needed, a voice that can say “never again’ with authority.

But..”never again”…what?

Reinventing a War Criminal: Defending the Bush Legacy

by Stephen Lendman

The Bush legacy is based on lies, deceit, crimes of war and against humanity, and complicity in criminal fraud, a disgusting record deserving denunciation and prison, not shameless feting.

Yet his new book, "Decision Points," attempts the impossible, a brazen scheme to reinvent a war criminal, one of history's greatest, his legacy marked by:

-- neocon hellishness;

-- duplicity and public betrayal;

-- a disdain for human rights and civil liberties;

-- lawlessness;

-- racist hatemongering;

-- usurping unconstitutional "Unitary Executive" authority, what Chalmers Johnson called "a ball-faced assertion of presidential supremacy....dressed up in legalistic mumbo jumbo;"

-- imperial wars called liberating ones;

-- mass murder;

-- extrajudicially establishing coup d'etat "continuity of government" authority to abolish constitutional freedoms unilaterally;

-- color revolutions against democracy;

-- reveling in being a "wartime president;"

-- making torture official US policy;

-- establishing a global torture prison gulag;

-- abolishing the 1807 Insurrection Act and 1878 Posse Comitatus protections against using US military forces for domestic law enforcement, except as constitutionally authorized or in cases of internal insurrection;

-- militarizing state and local law enforcement agencies, establishing a martial law apparatus throughout all levels of government without congressional approval;

-- supporting the worst of Israeli crimes;

-- deposing Haiti's Jean-Bertrand Aristide, its first democratic leader since liberation from France in 1803, turning slaves into citizens;

-- staging a failed coup to depose Venezuela's Hugo Chavez;

-- failing to establish a militarized North American Union (NAU) merger of Canada and Mexico with America, headquartered in Washington;

-- transferring unprecedented wealth to the rich, exceeded only by his successor;

-- unabashedly favoring business over beneficial social change;

-- designating everything for privatization, including public education as another commodity;

-- waging war on working Americans;

-- unprecedented levels of secrecy;

-- endangering public welfare and safety by regulatory shredding;

-- creating the grimmest economic conditions since the 1930s;

-- destroying civil liberties;

-- silencing dissent;

-- criminalizing First Amendment activities advocating for environmental and animal rights;

-- institutionalizing illegal spying and police state repression;

-- turning elections into shams;

-- hiring journalist as paid propagandists;

-- failing to privatize Social Security and end Medicare;

-- opposing Net Neutrality;

-- waging war on Muslims, Latinos, and other political targets; persecuting them; denying them due process and judicial fairness; incarcerating and/or deporting them;

-- fostering social decay; and

-- much more, a legacy from hell, a disgusting betrayal of every norm of civilized decency, engendering global contempt and outrage.

Yet there he was discussing his record publicly on the hustings, promoting his new book, 477 pages of ghostwritten rubbish - fiction, not fact.

The writer: Christopher Michel, aged 28, a fellow Yale graduate, working with Bush preparing it since January 2009. The Daily Beast's Bryan Curtis said, in 2003, he was an unpaid intern, then rose to become deputy assistant to the president and deputy speechwriting director. Both positions involved close regular contact, including traveling the world on Air Force One.

Treating his former boss reverentially, he said Bush was fully in charge, "writ(ing) a first draft of a lot of things, (then) email(ing it) to" him. "My role (was) to help put together different scenes. (He wrote) the scenes, and (I) stitch(ed) things together." Or so he claimed, wanting Bush to get full credit, a man who couldn't complete a full sentence, got through Yale and Harvard Business School on his pedigree, not intellect, and likely didn't write his own term papers, let alone a book.

Curtis concluded saying "the best way to read the Bush memoir is as the elusive piece de resistance of the most loyal Bush scrivener. In (a) 2009 email to friends, Michel wrote, 'I owe more than I can repay to the 43rd president of the United States, a man of courage who will fare well in history.' " Perhaps what's taught in Texas schools or featured in "managed news." Never by legitimate chroniclers, exposing one of history's greatest war criminals, a mass murderer, a contemptible human being, so far unaccountable.

Feting a World Class Rogue

Bombastically back on the world stage, Bush began a whirlwind tour on prime time NBC TV, promoting his book, defending his illegal wars, rationalizing his abandonment of New Orleans post-Katrina, and more, trying to reinvent himself.

Soft media hosts, including Matt Lauer, Oprah Winfrey, Rush Limbaugh and three Fox News regulars (Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Greta Van Susteren in that order) provided venues. Print interviews will follow, one announced with AARP The Magazine. More interviews as well on CBS Sunday Morning, prime time CNN, The Tonight Show, and other programs, part of the carefully planned scheme to rewrite history, reinvent the man, and sell books, corporate media hosts always cooperative.

New York Times writer Brian Stelter called it part of a well-orchestrated campaign, NBC getting first crack having outbid other network proposals. One reason perhaps is because Bush's daughter, Jena, is a part-time Today show correspondent.

In his November 7 article titled, "With Book, Bush Is Back in Spotlight," Stelter said:

Late last month, NBC taped the interview "over the course of two days in Texas," calling it "a major coup." But anyone expecting "to see a televised confrontation over issues like the Iraq war may come away disappointed. The tone of the prime-time special (and other scheduled interviews) is conversational, not prosecutorial, and for that reason, 'Lauer/Bush' is not likely to join 'Frost/Nixon' in the public imagination."

Former Bush press secretary Dana Perino said tone was an important consideration for the tour, a combination image-building/book-selling effort, already a non-fiction best seller.

Without trying to embarrass or pressure Bush, Lauer asked, "Let's talk about waterboarding." He flatly denied it was torture because he legal staff said so. In fact, they followed orders, devising legal opinions to justify lawlessness, what they clearly understood.

Yet with no substantiating evidence, Bush claimed it "saved lives" by providing advance warning. In fact, experts know that that torture is both ineffective and counterproductive, accomplishing nothing but vengeance.

One of many torture techniques used, waterboarding inflicts severe pain from 40-second applications in two hour sessions, multiple ones daily, forcing water in detainees' mouths and noses for 12 minutes, repeated daily, sometimes for weeks.

Merriam Webster online calls it "an interrogation technique in which water is forced into a detainee's mouth and nose so as to induce the sensation of drowning."

Wikipedia calls it:

"a form of torture that consists of immobilizing the subject on his/her back with the head inclined downwards; water is then poured over the face into breathing passages, thus triggering (a sensation) of drowning. In contrast to submerging the head face-forward in water, waterboarding precipitates an almost immediate gag reflex (causing) extreme pain, dry drowning, damage to (the) lungs (and) brain....from oxygen deprivation (as well as) other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, lasting psychological damage or, if uninterrupted, death."

By any standard, it's barbaric torture, omitted from media interviews. They focused mainly on Bush's book, reinvented history, airbrushed truth, the same "managed news" featured daily in corporate media reports, censoring or sanitizing hard topics too sensitive to discuss.

Instead, soft-ball hosts doted on Bush calling the world "better off without Saddam Hussein in power, as are 25 million (Iraqis) who now have a chance to live in freedom." The millions dead, suffering, and immiserated perhaps feel otherwise. Their country (like Afghanistan) is occupied, destroyed, corrupted, tryannized, and contaminated, the undiscussed Bush legacy Obama continues seamlessly, his memoirs ahead in a future volume, no less disgusting than "Decision Points."

Six questions that will lead you to the assassins of Rafik el Harriri

Frustrated Arab's Diary

http://www.nowlebanon.com/ContentPictures/Thumbnails/detliv-melis-195-02708033223.jpg
if there is only one  Ass-hole.......on this planet
this is him !!!............ Herr Detlev Mellis.

Rafik el Harriri was assassinated for a reason
or for many different reasons.......
Find those reasons that will automatically lead you
the the assassins.

Do not  you loose your time in hasty accusations:
The USA and France accused Syria
Israel says it is Hezbollah  !!

Each one accuses , convieniently , his own enemy
so do I , and I always said.......... Israel  did it !!

But for the sake of honesty and integrity
and for the sake of a logical investigation ,
I would like to ask 6 questions
which answers will lead you to the murderers ,
by means of excluding the improbable and by  disregarding the illogic.

1-
The assassins hated equally :
the Lebanon and Syria and Hezbollah , alltogether.
2-
The assassins wanted the Syrian-army out of the Lebanon.
3-
The assassins wanted to destabilise the Lebanon politically
and to re-frangmentate its social tissues.
4-
The assassins wanted to sabotage or to paralyse
the economic-financial-dynamo of the Lebanon
who was Rafik el Harriri , himself.
5-
The assassins wanted to install Hezbollah on the Terrorism-list
which Harriri has previously succeeded in stopping it .
6-
The assassins have had no problems at all ,
with a weak and divided Lebanon.

The assassins planted those physical evidences on the ground
which  are there only to deviate and to erronate any investigations.
Therefore the classical ferensic investigations are doomed to give us
a wrong conclusion and the wrong accusations.

Find for yourself a suspect that fits at least four out of the six questions !!
(I have found one who fits all six of them..... guess who !!)

Do not proceed scientifically nor academicaly
just use only your logic !!

Raja  Chemayel

you need not to be a genius
to be able to use the logic

Tens of citizens, foreigners hurt in IOF quelling of peaceful marches

[ 13/11/2010 - 08:43 AM ]

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Tens of Palestinian citizens and foreign activists were treated for gas inhalation after Israeli occupation forces (IOF) used teargas canisters and stun grenades to disperse peaceful anti wall rallies in a number of West Bank villages on Friday.

The IOF soldiers fired gas and sonic bombs at participants in the weekly Ma'sara village march, south of Bethlehem, causing breathing problems to tens of local and foreign participants.

Dozens others were treated for similar breathing difficulties in Bilin, Ramallah district, as activists hoisted Palestinian flags and chanted anti occupation slogans.

In Nilin, another Ramallah village, IOF troops fired rubber-coated bullets at the demonstrators in addition to the gas canisters.

The IOF troops sealed off the Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah, and installed military roadblocks between it and surrounding villages in a bid to obstruct similar marches.

Meanwhile, the popular anti wall committee in Al-Khalil denounced the IOF and Jewish settlers' daily aggressions on Palestinian farmers and lands, charging that such practice aimed at evicting Palestinians from their own land.

In a statement on Friday, the committee urged the Fatah-controlled authority in Ramallah to support farmers whose lands are threatened with confiscation on the part of the Israeli occupation authority in Beit Ola west of Al-Khalil.

In a related context, the British Guardian newspaper accused Israel of pushing the Palestinians of the 1948 occupied lands into direct confrontation with it through the arbitrary measures it takes against them.

The newspaper on Thursday stated some of the unjust measures Israel takes against the Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem as well as the inhumane situation which the Palestinians of Negev are suffering from because Israel does not recognize their villages and thus deprives them of any development services or projects.

It said the Palestinian natives of Jerusalem cannot get construction licenses and rarely some of them can, which forces them to build homes without permits, but later the Israeli municipal council issues demolition orders against them.

In return, the Israeli settlers are left to build structures in Jerusalem or the West Bank as they like, and they are not asked for construction permits, the newspaper added.

Carter: Gaza siege one of the worst violations against humanity

[ 13/11/2010 - 07:31 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter told Al-Jazeera on Friday that Israel and other regional countries were working to strengthen the Fatah party against Hamas, despite the latter having control in Gaza.

Carter condemned the continued blockade on the Gaza Strip as one of the worst violations against humanity.

The U.S. leader said Hamas won the elections, but Israel jailed their politicians and threatened others to be deported, stressing that delivering peace to Israel is impossible without delivering security to the Palestinians first.

He added that it was unfortunate that the world watches the siege on Gaza with acceptance and satisfaction while 40,000 students in the Strip are denied the right to education because of Israel’s block of building materials used to erect schools.

THE TORTURERS REVISITED

BUSH’S AXIS OF EVIL WAR

The Trial is a novel by Franz Kafka, first published in 1925. One of Kafka’s best-known works, it tells the story of a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime never revealed either to him or the reader.

The theme developed a familiar ring to it following the imprisonment of “enemy combatants” in Guantanamo.

Abu Ghraib prison guard showing off his tattoo
Echoes of such places come from another Kafka story, “In the Penal Colony”, where everyone is guilty simply because they’re there. If they weren’t guilty, they wouldn’t be there.

This was the kind of assumption made by the torturers at Abu Ghraib or the jailers in secret CIA prisons around the world or the guards at Guantanamo.  You can be sentenced without trial or defence.

“In the Penal Colony” describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin in a script before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours.

“It’s a remarkable piece of apparatus,” says the officer “In the Penal Colony” to the explorer and surveyed with a certain air of admiration of the apparatus which was after all quite familiar to him.
“In any case, the condemned man looked so like a submissive dog that one might have thought he could be left to run free on the surrounding hills and would only need to be whistled for when the execution was due to begin,” says the story’s narrator”

One can easily imagine the jailers at Abu Ghraib making such psycho comments as they attached electric wires to their prisoners’ fingers or forcing a prisoner to remain nude while dogs attacked him.

That was when cell phones and camcorders made it possible to record the sick psychotic joys of torturing for jailers or their remote commandants.

As for commandants, G W Bush recalls in his memoir that when the CIA asked him whether they could proceed with waterboarding of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged plotter of the 9/11 attacks, Bush replied “Damn right,” reported The Washington Post.

Illustration by: Matt Mahurin
It’s Kafkaesque to imagine this scenario in Guantanamo as they set up the waterboard to nearly drown their captives. CIA interrogators used the controversial waterboarding technique 183 times on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has also acknowledged supporting torture. “I was a big supporter of waterboarding,” he boasted in a television interview in February.

One must wonder whether they were enjoying, like Kafka’s officer or commandant, remote thoughts about their minions inflicting pain on untried “enemy combatants”.

On November 5th Al Jazeera reported that Council members in Geneva, Switzerland, levelled a barrage of criticisms at the US administration calling for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison and for investigations into alleged torture by US troops abroad.

Torturing untried prisoners is by no means an exclusive province of America. On November 6th, the New York Times reported that a lawyer for 200 Iraqis demanded a public inquiry into what they described as brutal mistreatment by British soldiers in a secret detention centre near Basra.
The lawyer “told the High Court in London on Friday that the abuse amounted to ‘Britain’s Abu Ghraib.’ The assertion was buttressed with video recordings.”

Echoes of Kafka, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and the CIA’s black holes of extraordinary rendition reverberate from the UK.

The US administration continues to deny that torture is torture. “Let there be no doubt, the United States does not torture and it will not torture,” says Harold Koh, legal adviser at the US State Department.

Kafka should be a must read for all government officials, prison staff, members of the military and responsible citizens.

‘Sayyed Nasrallah’s Speech Gave Momentum to Saudi-Syrian Efforts’

‘Sayyed Nasrallah’s Speech Gave Momentum to Saudi-Syrian Efforts’

13/11/2010 Two days on the decisive and significant speech delivered by Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah in the occasion of the Martyr’s Day, the content of the speech is still making the headlines in Lebanon.

Despite the expected “campaign” on the speech by those who always seek to create divisions in the country and by those who are dissatisfied by all efforts to maintain stability in the country, experts and analysts agreed that the speech has actually given momentum to the ongoing Saudi-Syrian efforts to calm down the situation.

Sayyed Nasrallah kept the floor open for all initiatives during his Thursday’s speech, emphasizing that the Saudi-Syrian efforts were serious and that the party was open to any logical and ethical solution. “The Saudi-Syrian efforts are very serious and there are big hopes pinned on it. Any results the Lebanese State agrees to will also be endorsed by the Islamic republic of Iran,” Sayyed Nasrallah stressed, adding, however, that some Lebanese sides were not comfortable with the Saudi-Syrian efforts. “When some of the Lebanese leaders realized the seriousness of these efforts they went mad,” his eminence said. “They asked for the help of the Americans, French as well as some Arab governments. They believed that in case the crisis was resolved, the fifth phase in the plot against the Resistance would fall just like the previous phases did and therefore, all their dreams would collapse. Some politicians in Lebanon dream of witnessing clashes between the army and Resistance as well as Sunni-Shiite strife. But let them be assured that nothing of this will happen.”

Lebanese daily As-Safir quoted on Saturday trusted Lebanese sources as confirming that the Saudi-Syrian contacts were taking place on a semi-daily basis, revealing that they were not strictly addressing the indictment in the investigation into the assassination for former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. The sources said that the Syrian leadership had informed a number of Lebanese officials that the Resistance and peace in Lebanon are a "red line".

In the same context, Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali told Al-Manar that the Syrian-Saudi efforts to resolve the Lebanese crisis were ongoing, expressing hope that the efforts would be fruitful and would end up with a Lebanese agreement. He said that Syrian President Bashar Assad and Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz were both concerned with the Lebanese situation. “They are aware of the sensitivity of the situation in the Lebanon and the dangerous plots prepared for Lebanon and the region,” he added.

For his part, Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri said on Saturday he was very comfortable with Sayyed Nasrallah’s openness to the Saudi-Syrian efforts. In an interview with Lebanese daily An-Nahar, Berri said rejected suggestions regarding the three-way power sharing system, adding that the Taif Accord should be implemented as a whole.

Yet, some political leaders in Lebanon, dissatisfied with the efforts and initiatives aimed at maintaining stability in the country, favored to assail Hebzollah Secretary General through his last speech.

In this context, Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea claimed that Sayyed Nasrallah’s speech "included an amount of contradictions,” warning that "the chances of civil strife have become higher after Sayyed Nasrallah's speech.”

For their part, the so-called March 14 General Secretariat hit back at Sayyed Nasrallah, claiming “he unleashed his imagination in a conspiratorial explanation of events, addressing accusations of treason to those who are devoting their lives for the sake of protecting Lebanon.”
