Arms Smuggling to Syria in Full Swing, Lebanon on Alert

Local Editor

Amid the international calls for calm in the Arab country, still there are parties who want to take advantage of the unrest in Syria, despite the Lebanese political rhetoric that clearly stresses Lebanon should distance itself from what is going on in the neighboring country.

Early on Monday, the Lebanese army intelligence foiled an attempt by three men to smuggle weapons to Syria, the National News Agency reported.

Two Lebanese men and a Syrian national were detained after the army confiscated their pick-up truck in Beirut, which was loaded with weapons and anti-missile shields.

State commissioner to the military court Judge Saqr Saqr charged the three men with trading arms and smuggling it to Syria, and referred them to the First Military Examining Magistrate.

Arms smuggled to Syria, confiscated by the Lebanese Army; April 23, 2012In the meantime, Customs Secretariat of Jdeidet Yabous Crossing, on the Syrian-Lebanese border, seized Monday a Lebanese tourist car with private plates loaded with large amount of weapons driven by a Lebanese citizen accompanied by a Syrian national while trying to enter the Syrian territories, Syrian state-run news agency SANA reported.

A Lebanese private car smuggling weapons to Syria, confiscated Monday; April 23, 2012SANA reporter quoted a source at the Customs Secretariat as saying that the confiscated weapons included a sniper rifle, an RPG launcher, three machine guns, four pistols, 53 remote detonators, 11 RPG rounds, 8 mortar rounds, a machinegun tripod, 385 machinegun rounds, 6 boxes of PKC ammo, 311 pistols rounds, 357 AK-47 rounds and 6 assault rifle magazines.

The poorly-demarcated Syrian-Lebanese border has witnessed a number of violations since the violent revolt against the Syrian regime began in mid-March 2011.

The arms confiscations came less than two days of the UN Security Council resolution calling upon the cessation of violence from all parties in Syria.

Zionist Piracy in Mediterranean: Israeli Navy Intercepts Liberian Ship

Local Editor

israel piracyIsraeli navy has intercepted on Sunday a cargo ship in the Mediterranean off the Lebanese coast in the International waters.

The ship was intercepted “on suspicion” it was carrying arms destined for countries in the region, “apparently to either Lebanon or Gaza”, Israeli daily, Haaretz reported.

Israeli occupation forces spokesman said in a statement that the Hs Beethovan, bearing a Liberian flag, was intercepted 160 sea miles of the coast of the occupied territories, and that the inspection of the ship was carried out with the permission of the ship's captain.

An Israeli military source said that occupation troops were conducting a "very thorough search of its cargo."
The official said so far "nothing outstanding has been found" on the ship, and declined to provide details, describing the interception as "routine protection of our territorial waters.”

Israeli navies repeatedly intercept cargo ships in the Mediterranean. Last year in March, the Zionist entity seized a cargo ship, the Victoria, on suspicion that it held arms intended for the Gaza Strip.

Russian papers dismiss Sarkozy's chances

Published Monday, April 23, 2012

Russian papers said on Monday that French voters had expressed their frustration with President Nicolas Sarkozy and gave the incumbent only a limited chance of beating his Socialist rival in a run-off.

"Today in France (unlike in Russia), the people are voting for the opposite – anyone but Sarkozy," the popular Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote in an article written before the first results from Sunday's election were announced.

Some papers predicted that public sentiment in France was so strong against Sakrozy that anyone who faced off against him in the second round on May 6 would win.

"Out of two evils, (people) are selecting the fresher one," the Kommersant business daily wrote in a headline.

Left-leaning candidate Francois Hollande won 28.56 percent of the vote, beating Sarkozy's 27.07 percent, while anti-EU flag-bearer Marine Le Pen won a best-ever 18.12 percent, according to near-complete interior ministry results.

The online edition of the Russia's Vesti state news channel predicted that Sarkozy and Hollande would now focus on winning the backing of the centrist Francois Bayrou, who finished fifth with less than 10 percent of the vote.

"In the last elections, the Socialists never did manage to win his official support," said Vesti.
"This time, Sarkozy constantly stressed the similarity of the right's and the centrists' positions."

Egypt Says Gas Agreement 'Suspended, Not Cancelled'

Senior Egyptian official says the agreement of supply of gas to Israel has only been suspended because of financial issues.

A senior official in the Egyptian army said on Sunday the agreement of supply of gas between Egypt and Israel was not cancelled but only suspended.

According to a report on Army Radio, the official said that the suspension came about following a dispute regarding the transfer of funds.

Earlier, Channel 2 News reported that Egypt had informed Israel that it is unilaterally cancelling the agreement. The announcement was made to EMG, the firm that receives the gas from Egypt.

Egypt’s natural gas company declared, according to the Army Radio report, that the gas agreement was cancelled for business reasons and not political ones. According to the report, the company said that Israel had failed to honor its obligations under the contract and did not pay for the gas for months.
Conversely, Ampal-American Israel Corporation, one of the partners in EMG, said that the termination of the agreement is invalid. The company said it will demand financial compensation, and that it is considering suing the Egyptian government.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Uzi Landau said Sunday evening that the Ministry of Energy and Water has been preparing for about two years for the possibility of the supply of gas from Egypt coming to an end.
“Israel is working to establish its energy independence and rapid develop Israeli supply sources,” Landau said, according to Army Radio. He noted that for the past year there has not been a steady supply of gas from Egypt.

The pipeline carrying gas from Egypt to Israel was blown up 14 times since the Mubarak regime was toppled in February 2011.

Egypt Cuts Natural Gas to Worried ’’Israel’’

Local Editor

Egyptian energy companies have terminated a deal to supply the Zionist entity with natural gas.

An "Israeli" partner in the business made the step public on Sunday but an Egyptian firm said the decision to cancel the deal had been made on Thursday.

"Israel", which relies on Egypt for 40 percent of its natural gas supply, is worried about facing further energy cuts after a series of attacks on the pipeline running through the Sinai peninsula.
"Israeli" Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz expressed "great concern about the suspension," saying "it had a dangerous precedent which casts a shadow on the peace agreements and the peaceful atmosphere between Egypt and "Israel"."

The Egyptian decision was announced in "Israel" by Ampal-American "Israel" Corporation, partner in the East Mediterranean Gas Company (EMG), which operates a cross-border pipeline supplying gas to "Israel".

Ampal said the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company had told EMG they were "terminating the gas and purchase agreement."

"EMG considers the termination attempt unlawful and in bad faith, and consequently demanded its withdrawal," Ampal claimed in a written statement.

Mohamed Shoeib, chairman of the Egyptian company EGAS, confirmed the decision, saying the 20-year-old deal with "Israel" had been terminated on Thursday.
Shoeib told Egypt's Hayat TV that "EGAS ended the deal because the other party didn't fulfill its commitments."

The Zionist entity, aiming to avoid further damage to its troubled ties with Cairo, said on Monday it saw the Egyptian termination of natural gas as part of a business rather than a diplomatic dispute.

"Israeli" Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told "Israeli" radio stations the cancellation of the deal was "not a good sign," but added: "We want to understand this as a trade dispute. I think that to turn a business dispute into a diplomatic dispute would be a mistake."

""Israel" is interested in maintaining the peace treaty and we think this is also a supreme interest of Egypt," he said.

Is America a Free Country?

by , April 23, 2012
The “war on terrorism” has inaugurated a new era in the American polity, a sea-change that has not only threatened to overturn traditional limits on government power but also corrupted the political culture – and opened the way to the terminal crisis of the Constitution.

In a revealing series of interviews on Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now” program, three individuals targeted by the American surveillance state – William Binney, former top NSA official, Jacob Applebaum, an internet security specialist who works with WikiLeaks, and Laura Poitras, an Oscar-nominated documentary film-maker whose work has brought her to the attention of US authorities and led to her harassment by US government agents – give compelling evidence that the answer to the question in the title of this piece is clearly an emphatic no.

Binney resigned his position with the National Security Agency (NSA) after 40 years in protest at the government’s increasingly totalitarian methods of data-collection and retention, without judicial oversight. The government has targeted him: in 2007, his home was invaded by FBI agents after he went to the Senate Intelligence Committee with revelations about illegal NSA spying on American citizens: they pointed guns at him, and warned that he would “not do well” in prison. Applebaum and Poitras have been detained, searched, and interrogated every time they have re-entered the US from abroad – Poitras over 40 times – and had their laptops seized and presumably copied. None of these individuals have been charged with a crime.

The degree to which our constitutionally-protected liberties have been usurped is shockingly described by Binney:

“AMYGOODMAN: Do you believe all emails, the government has copies of, in the United States?

WILLIAMBINNEY: I would think—I believe they have most of them, yes.

GOODMAN: And you’re speaking from a position where you would know, considering your position in the National Security Agency.

BINNEY: Right. All they would have to do is put various Narus devices at various points along the network, at choke points or convergent points, where the network converges, and they could basically take down and have copies of most everything on the network.
While this level of surveillance started during the Bush administration, under President Obama, says Binney:
“The surveillance has increased. In fact, I would suggest that they’ve assembled on the order of
20 trillion transactions about U.S. citizens with other U.S. citizens.

AMY GOODMAN: How many?

WILLIAM BINNEY: Twenty trillion.”

What are they doing with all those emails? They’re targeting their enemies, domestic as well as foreign, and combining this information with “meta-data” – i.e. financial records, credit card transactions – to create comprehensive profiles of those on their enemies list. There’s nothing to stop them from “leaking” this information to anyone, for any purpose – because it all takes place in the dark. And if they want to find something on you, they will find it and use it. This, in short, is what it means to say one lives in a police state. Glenn Greenwald wrote about this in a recent column, and he said something very important that we should all focus on:
“So just look at what happens to people in the U.S. if they challenge government actions in any meaningful way — if they engage in any meaningful dissent. We love to tell ourselves that there are robust political freedoms and a thriving free political press in the U.S. because you’re allowe d to have an MSNBC show or blog in order to proclaim every day how awesome and magnanimous the President of the United States is and how terrible his GOP political adversaries are —
how brave, cutting and edgy!
— or to go on Fox News and do the opposite. But people who are engaged in actual dissent, outside the tiny and narrow permissible boundaries of pom-pom waving for one of the two political parties — those who are focused on the truly significant acts which the government and its owners are doing in secret — are subjected to this type of intimidation, threats, surveillance, and climate of fear, all without a whiff of illegal conduct.”
All modern dictatorships employ the same method of limited freedom in certain realms, expanding and contracting the parameters of the permissible according to the tactical advantage of the moment, and yet always upholding the first principle of any and all tyrannies: that the government grants such “rights” as “free speech” and “free assembly” at its sole discretion. Which means they can be rescinded at a moment’s notice.

This state of conditional freedom that allows these governments to maintain the official fiction they are “liberal” democracies. With Fox News and MSNBC braying at one another, and the airwaves filled with corporate-funded political ads detailing the dirt on this or that candidate, the illusion of liberality persists. Yet all one has to do is challenge the “national security” prerogatives of an ever-expanding American empire – as Binney, Applebaum, and Poitras did – and suddenly one is transported into the world of It Can’t Happen Here, Sinclair Lewis’s masterful evocation of what a distinctively American dictatorship might look like, Orwell’s 1984, or some other dystopian vision of a totalitarian future. Reading these warnings today, one cannot escape their archaic air: not because the visions projected in these novels turned out to be wrong, but precisely because they have already come true.

Take Orwell’s classic work, which posited a world in a state of perpetual warfare (check!), where constant and universal surveillance is the norm (check!), where “thoughtcrime” is ruthlessly punished, and where most ordinary people (the “proles”) are basically left alone, with totalitarian methods of repression directed almost exclusively against rebellious elites (check!) This last item is the point Greenwald made in his piece, and it bears repeating and elaboration. The idea is to make it possible to exert control without affecting how most people live their lives. If you aren’t a “whistle-blower,” a Julian Assange, or a Bradley Manning: if you don’t reveal closely-guarded government secrets, if you aren’t making documentaries about how the Americans conquered and lorded over the Iraqis, then you have nothing to worry about. There are no political prisons, no gulags – but if you step out of bounds the government has enough information to discredit, destroy, and/or imprison you. Two journalists – Tom Vanden Brook, a writer for USA Today, and Ray Locker, an editor – who were writing about the Pentagon’s use of military contractors to whitewash its sorry record in Iraq and Afghanistan, found that a website and a false Twitter account in their names made a sudden appearance, in what appeared to be a coordinated effort to discredit them and their work.

The contractors deny all involvement, and, yes, this happened under the Obama administration – last week. Barack Obama is an essential element of the developing totalitarian trend in the United States: indeed, I would argue his reelection is the essential factor pushing this process forward. “Lean forward!” barks MSNBC – but forward to what?

This is a question I needn’t ask myself, for the simple reason that I was never a supporter of the President, and am an unlikely candidate for membership in the Obama cult. My political views might be described as somewhat to the “right” of Ayn Rand, when it comes to domestic issues, and far to the “left” of Noam Chomsky when it comes to foreign policy. In short, I’m a libertarian, and so my jaundiced view of the President is not all that surprising. Yet even I am surprised by the deafening silence in the “liberal” community – and the lack of real anger on the left at Obama’s escalation of the war on our civil liberties. Leading “progressives” are apparently indifferent to this administration’s vindictive pursuit of “whistle-blowers” – insiders like Binney who cry foul at government abuses – and the lack of outrage is … outrageous.

I know it’s an election year, and partisanship is to be expected – but I would think that, as we descend into an authoritarian abyss from which there is no return, American liberals and “progressives” would consider it significant enough to declare a moratorium on partisanship and exert some pressure on their political leaders. Why is it left to us libertarians, and rare dissident liberals like Greenwald, to speak out against the accelerating encroachments of the National Security State?

I’ll tell you why: because the American left is dead, killed off by their support of a candidate who personified their turn to identity politics. The left’s undying allegiance to the President and his policies has sealed their rejection of the old-fashioned liberal anti-imperialist pro-civil libertarian stance, exemplified by The Nation when it was edited by Oswald Garrison Villard and which briefly resurfaced during the Vietnam era. Instead of going forward, American liberalism has retreated back to the era of FDR, when being on the “left” meant supporting not only the Welfare State but also calling for bigger and better ways to buttress the Warfare State. Modern liberals, like their ideological antecedents of the 1930s, disdain the Constitution as an archaic dead-letter that needs to be converted into a “living” document. What’s all this talk about the alleged sacredness of the Constitution, they grumble: it all sounds like so much “constitutional fundamentalism” to them. Democratic Rep. Mike Quigly of Illinois opines that such concepts as “free speech” and “due process of law” are so vague that they “don’t define themselves,” and are up for creative interpretation.

The neoconservatives who have taken over the conservative movement and the Republican party are certainly not going to jump into the breach and take up the cudgels on behalf of the Constitution. They only invoke it when it offers to upend the President’s economic and social initiatives, such as Obamacare, but when it comes to this administration’s assault on basic civil liberties they say “Faster, please!”

With the left co-opted, and the right pushing for an even more draconian crackdown on what is left of our constitutionally-protected rights, we are left with only Ron Paul holding up a copy of the Constitution and demanding its restoration. Unfortunately, even that voice will be stilled – at least, insofar as presidential politics is concerned – after the Tampa convention, in August, when the Republicans anoint Mitt Romney, neocon tool and sacrificial lamb. What this means is that the authoritarian trend in American politics will continue, unabated and unopposed. In this context, it is appropriate to recall the warning of John T. Flynn, former New Dealer-turned-constitutionalist, a financial writer purged from The New Republic and polite liberal society for his vocal opposition to the policies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt:
“Fascism will come at the hands of perfectly authentic Americans, as violently against Hitler and Mussolini as the next one, but who are convinced that the present economic system is washed up and that the present political system in America has outlived its usefulness and who wish to commit this country to the rule of the bureaucratic state; interfering in the affairs of the states and cities; taking part in the management of industry and finance and agriculture; assuming the role of great national banker and investor, borrowing millions every year and spending them on all sorts of projects through which such a government can paralyze opposition and command public support; marshaling great armies and navies at crushing costs to support the industry of war and preparation for war which will become our greatest industry; and adding to all this the most romantic adventures in global planning, regeneration, and domination all to be done under the authority of a powerfully centralized government in which the executive will hold in effect all the powers with Congress reduced to the role of a debating society. There is your fascist. And the sooner America realizes this dreadful fact the sooner it will arm itself to make an end of American fascism masquerading under the guise of the champion of democracy.
“…. They began to flirt with the alluring pastime of reconstructing the capitalist system. They became the architects of a new capitalist system. And in the process of this new career they began to fashion doctrines that turned out to be the principles of fascism. Of course they do not call them fascism, although some of them frankly see the resemblance. But they are not disturbed, because they know that they will never burn books, they will never hound the Jews or the Negroes, they will never resort to assassination and suppression. What will turn up in their hands will be a very genteel and dainty and pleasant form of fascism which cannot be called fascism at all because it will be so virtuous and polite.”
Those words were published in 1944, and they are truer today than on the day they appeared in print. The dictatorship of the virtuous is being prepared, ever so politely, by those who pose as the champions of a “liberalism” corrupted beyond recognition. As we pass from a condition of liberty to one of conditional freedom, this is the political agency ensuring a smooth transition.

Egypt’s Islamist-dominated Parliament on Sunday demanded the resignation of Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa over his controversial visit to Jerusalem last week.

Egypt’s Islamist-dominated Parliament on Sunday demanded the resignation of Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa over his controversial visit to Jerusalem last week.
Despite Gomaa’s statements that the visit was unofficial and that it took place under the supervision of the Jordanian authorities, the visit angered those opposed to normalizing relations with Israel.
Parliament Speaker Saad al-Katatny read out a recommendation within a statement issued by the People’s Assembly’s Religious Affairs and Endowments Committee that demanded an apology from Gomaa, and his resignation.
The recommendation received the approval of a majority of Parliament.
It demanded Gomaa’s “repentance to God,” “an apology to the Arab and Islamic peoples” and his resignation."
Katatny requested the removal of the line concerning his "repentance" and the committee agreed.
The majority of Egyptians continue to avoid dealing with Israel, despite the passage of 33 years since the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. The international community did not recognize the occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem after the 1967 war.
The majority of Egyptians say they will not normalize relations with Israel until it agrees on the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. Gomaa had visited East Jerusalem, where he prayed at the Al-Aqsa mosque.
During a discussion that preceded the Religious Affairs and Endowments committee’s recommendation, the chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party's parliamentary bloc, Hussein Ibrahim, said, "Dr. Ali Gomaa condemned himself when he said the visit was personal."
"Sheikh Ali Gomaa does not respect our minds,” he added. “Didn’t he see the Jerusalemites as they were being driven out of Jerusalem ... didn’t he see those who prevent them from praying at the Al-Aqsa Mosque?"
Salafi MP Mamdouh Ismail said the visit was a "poisoned dagger that stabbed the (Palestinian) case."
Chairman of the Wafd Party's parliamentary bloc Mahmoud al-Sakka said, "if he was sincere in his visit, he would have returned with Jerusalem in his right hand."
“He will be held accountable by God and by the people because he made a huge mistake,” he added.
MP Margaret Azer said the visit would have no negative impact on Egyptian Christians’ decision to avoid visiting Jerusalem "until after its liberation."
For decades, the Coptic Church in Egypt has prohibited Copts from visiting Israeli-occupied Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, a number of MPs said the visit should not be considered normalization with Israel as he did not meet with any Israeli officials.
MP Atef al-Maghawry for instance said, "visiting a prisoner is not considered normalization with the prison warden ... the Mufti did not meet with any of the leaders of the Zionist entity.”
He added that the Palestinians consider visits by Arabs and Muslims to Jerusalem as support for their cause. However, a number of MPs said that allowing such visits could open the door to other visits not intended as support for the Palestinians.
According to the committee’s statement, "This brutal enemy [Israel] controls its entrances and exits, and its mosques and churches ... [Gomaa’s] visit gives legitimacy to the occupation ... and it also represents normalization with the Zionist entity that is conclusively refused by the people.”

Turkish anti-imperialist protest repressed by police

Movement demands no intervention in Syria

April 21, 2012

Protesters face off against police in Hatay, Turkey, on the border with Syria, April 15.
Marchers stopped from going to Hatay march in Ankara, April 15. Banner reads: "AKP, get your hands off Syria! Turkish Communist Party"
Turkish police repressed a peace action against imperialist intervention in Syria April 15. Earlier, the Turkish Communist Party (TKP) had sent out a call for an all-out peace march to the Turkish city of Hatay, on the Syrian border, to say no to imperialist intervention in Syria and the war-mongering policies of the ruling AKP party, which acts as an imperialist guard-dog in the region.

The AKP government has been funding and training terrorist groups that fight in Syria, fueling the civil war and helping to set the stage for military intervention. The march was planned to end with a rally at the Syrian border, with a declaration of peace between the peoples of Turkey and Syria.

On the evening of April 14, the Turkish police blocked activists from cities all over Turkey from traveling to Hatay for the event the next day. While TKP members in Ankara and Eskişehir were not even allowed to leave their cities, others able to get closer to Hatay were blocked by the police from entering the city. The excuse given by the police for this blatant repression of freedom of travel and speech in the so-called Turkish democracy was that there was a “potential for civil disorder.”

TKP members who were not allowed to leave the city took to the Ankara streets and marched to the Prime Ministry. Slogans displayed included: “We will not be American soldiers!” and “No to AKP fascism!” In front of a huge “No to War!” painted on the wall of the ministry, a press statement was read: “AKP, get your hands off Syria! The voices of the people that say no to war will not be stifled. This is a war for the interests of the rich and the imperialists. Only death, poverty and lies await the working class as usual.”

On April 15, despite all the police repression, members of the Hatay branch of the TKP and a large group of supporters gathered for the declaration of peace between the people of Turkey and Syria. After pointing to the imperialist plans for regime change in Syria and the role of the AKP in supporting these policies, the Turkish puppet government was denounced as an enemy of not only the Syrian people but the Turkish people as well. The declaration ended with slogans from the crowd militantly cheering:
“Down with imperialism and its puppets! Long live the brotherhood of peoples! Long live freedom and socialism!”

Syria: Looking for Plan 'B'

Via FLC

"...one administration official with knowledge of the internal deliberations said. "Our allies were coming back to us and saying ‘What's your next move?,' and we were forced to admit we didn't have one."
The new push includes adjustments in personnel handling the portfolio. Before March, National Security Council Director Steve Simon headed up the internal interagency process. Now, multiple officials confirm that NSC Senior Director for Strategy Derek Chollet has been added to the leadership of the Syria policy team and has been coordinating the interagency process for several weeks. Simon, Assistant Secretary of State Jeff Feltman, State Dept. Special Advisor Fred Hof, and Ambassador Robert Ford are still very active on the Syria portfolio....
New options are now being considered internally, including another discussion of setting up buffer zones inside Syria, one administration official confirmed. The administration has also authorized direct contact with the internal Syrian opposition, including the Free Syrian Army (FSA), and at least one State Department official has met with the FSA's nominal leaders in Turkey.
The rethink comes eight months after Obama explicitly demanded the Syrian leader's removal, saying, "The time has come for President Assad to step aside."
His administration is still struggling to come up with a way to make that call a reality...
Clinton hinted Wednesday that fresh options are under discussion.......The potential shift in U.S. policy predates the Annan plan, however....
One administration official said that the hope that Russia could be convinced to reign in Assad has now faded, as has the notion that Turkey and the Arab Gulf states would be willing to bankroll the Syrian opposition and even arm the FSA while the United States largely confined itself to a diplomatic role.
The administration's position had been to look the other way while Arab states armed the Syrian opposition, but pledges of aid by Gulf states have not materialized and the Turkish government, which has committed to an anti-Assad position and is hosting the FSA, is waiting for the United States to chart a clear way forward.
"They are not thinking two steps ahead. That's why there is a demand for a plan B," the administration official said, referring to the White House. "The position they took at the last Friends of Syria meeting is not sustainable."...
The FSA leaders asked the United States to provide RPGs, anti-aircraft guns, and ammunition. ..Turkish officials told that they were willing to let weapons flow over their borders and consider other more aggressive steps to help the internal Syrian opposition, but that they won't do so unless Washington leads the way....
The administration official explained that the White House does not want to become so heavily involved in the Syria conflict, for example by directly arming opposition fighters, because it puts the United States on the hook for their success and would probably require increased levels of commitment as the conflict drags on.
"They've got this half-pregnant position that is offensive to the sensibilities of the people on the ground and confusing to the Turks," the official said..."

Mishaal confers with Turkish foreign minister in Qatar

DOHA, (PIC)– Political bureau chairman of Hamas Khaled Mishaal conferred with Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davetuglo in Doha on Saturday, Turkish and Qatari media reported.

The Anatolia news agency said that the discussion tackled the Arab-Israeli conflict and the internal Palestinian reconciliation.

For its part, the Qatari news agency (QANA) said that the meeting was not pre-planned, noting that Davetuglo was accompanying his premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan on a visit to Qatar to attend the UNCTAD conference.

Coming to Terms With Assad’s Survival

The hard facts about the Syrian crisis today mean that the ouster of President Bashar Assad is contingent on his enemies’ ability to assassinate him. Barring that eventuality, everything remains hypothetical.
The regime’s Syrian opponents are in no shape to draft a joint plan of action. The fact that their policies, funding, and operations are determined externally reflects a structural crisis in the Syrian opposition. There is no way out of their current situation other than to adopt policies which repudiate collaboration with the Arab and Western parties that do not want a strong Syria.

Up until now, the crisis has witnessed violent waves of protests, accompanied by a regional and international onslaught aimed at toppling Assad. Failure to achieve that goal ushered in a new stage, featuring an open-ended war of attrition.

This war is employing all available weapons: from indefinite economic and financial siege aimed at incapacitating an already ailing state, to sponsoring armed action against the state and its military, security, and civilian institutions. It also entails an unprecedented degree of sectarian mobilization, whose impact may be gradual, but is potent in terms of fuelling divisions of the kind that imperil the cohesion of societies worldwide.

Let us presume that the regime’s Syrian opponents do not want to rethink their plans, or have a different reading of developments which prompts them to continue as they are. But are their calculations the same as those of their supporters – be they political forces, states, or people? Accordingly, is it politically or morally justified to leave matters to those whose handling of the most serious national crisis Syria has experienced in ages has proven to be a dismal failure?

The backers of the plan to topple Assad base their approach to the Syrian crisis on the premise that there can be no coexistence with the current regime in Damascus, and that it is incapable of taking Syria forward while preserving its stability, social peace, and national interests. They behave as though they are superpowers, or have the capacity to turn the tables whenever they choose, or to provide the diverse components of the Syrian opposition with the tools it needs in this struggle. They forget that they are outside the decision-making circle and that the only roles available to them are as extras, nothing more or less. They are confined to making declarations, issuing statements, and engaging in other forms of plasma-screen warfare.

If they feel that the least they can do is take a moral stand, they are free to do so. Nobody can deny them that right. But freedom of speech – as one could remind the Lebanese, who pride themselves on enjoying a considerable amount of it – is meaningless when it does not translate into the power to make an impact or hold to account.

Political realism makes it incumbent now to prepare not for the “post-Assad stage,” but for the “post-Assad’s survival” stage. If all Assad’s detractors want is the satisfaction of being able to say, years or decades from now, that they foretold his demise 40 years previously, they can have it. But in the meantime, they should take us all a bit more seriously and cease this outpouring of tasteless jokes – especially when they regale us with talk of the great democratic transformation that is awaiting us.

This talk is hypothetical, much like the statements and promises made by the Muslim Brotherhood (MB). The organization’s supporters currently dominate the popular scene in most Arab countries. But its behavior has proven very similar to that of the Shia groups that have controlled Iraq for nearly a decade, and whose sole concern is to exact revenge for the years of exclusion, imprisonment, and exile they experienced.

Is this not the case with today’s ascendant Islamists? They have rapidly adopted the ploys used by the governments they replaced.

  • In Tunisia, the Ennahda “family” has started gathering positions of political and economic power into its hands. In Egypt, “either us or nobody” sums up the MB’s approach to matters parliamentary, constitutional, and presidential.
  • In Libya, the question of sharia law has been left to the tribes, while the state and its resources, or its former resources, have been left to the ravages of the militias and their American, French, and British backers, along with a gaggle of Arab and other opportunists.
  • In Yemen, meanwhile, the problem is that nobody knows where the Islamists stand and thus how to handle them.
  • In Morocco and Jordan they have made political deals, and they are attempting a comeback in Algeria now.
  • In the Levant, all we have seen of them so far is the latent violence which has been expressed physically in the bloody episodes of the Syrian crisis, and verbally in Lebanon.
As for the remainder of the Arab world, Iraq has had ample experience with many variants of them during and since the occupation, while Wahhabism prevails over the “mother of battles” in the countries of the Arabian Peninsula.

Congratulations to the Arab revolutionaries of all seasons, those throngs of opportunists, killers, and colonial agents that are filling the corridors of power, and the worlds of money and media.

Syrian 'revolutionaries' blame Gulf states of corrupting their revolution

Via FLC

"...And there you have it. As Khouri notes, there’s now a new group called the “Security Cooperation Forum” linking the US with the Gulf Cooperation Council. La Clinton turned up to assure the oil states of Washington’s “rock solid and unwavering commitment” to the GCC. Now where have we heard that before? Why, isn’t that what Obama is always saying to the Israelis? And weren’t Bibi Netanyahu of Israel and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia the two guys who called Obama to ask him to save Mubarak? And in Syria – where the Qataris and the Saudis are all too keen to send weapons for the rebels – things are not going very well for the revolution. After claiming for weeks a year ago that “armed bands” were attacking government forces, the bands now exist and are well and truly attacking Assad’s legions. For many tens of thousands who were prepared to demonstrate peacefully – albeit at the cost of their lives – this has become a disaster. Syrian friends of mine call it a “tragedy”. They blame the Gulf states for encouraging the armed uprising. “Our revolution was pure and clean and now it’s a war,” one of them said to me last week. I believe them..."
