Double Standards for Prisoners Vanished In "Israel"

By: Yahya Dbouk
Al-Akhbar daily, February 15, 2013
The case of Ben Zygier, known as "Prisoner X," has opened the door to questions about the possibility of "Israel" secretly detaining other prisoners and abductees.

Zygier, a Jewish-Australian citizen, died in an "Israeli" prison two years ago, in a case "Israel" went to extreme lengths to cover up, imposing media gag orders.

Until recently, the global norm was to accept that "Israel" is an entity where the rule of law is paramount.

This is not the first time "Israel" has hidden information related to the whereabouts and conditions of prisoners. Consider, for example, reports of the three Iranian diplomats kidnapped by the Lebanese Forces during the "Israeli" invasion of Lebanon in 1982, who were reportedly moved to prisons in occupied Palestine.

Then consider the case of Lebanese prisoner Yahya Skaf. In addition to a wealth of reporting on his case, testimonies by other detainees all aver that he is still alive and being held in an "Israeli" prison. It's a claim that Tel Aviv denies, maintaining that it lost Skaf's body.

In the same vein, reports from various sources assert that Iranian General Mohammed Reza Asgari, who was kidnapped in Turkey in 2007, is being held in "Israel".

Until recently, the global norm was to accept that "Israel" is an entity where the rule of law is paramount. Any reports that questioned "Israel's" democratic credentials were considered prejudiced or even anti-Semitic.

Yet if Tel Aviv was able to conceal the truth about Zygier for so long - the fact that he had committed suicide more than two years ago - then it's entirely fathomable that "Israel" is withholding the truth about other prisoners like Skaf, Asgari, and the above-mentioned Iranian diplomats.

The answer is now clear and backed up by damning evidence: "Israel" has both the capability and the willingness to engage in such acts.

A simple hypothetical exercise. Let's say the kidnapping, detention, and subsequent suicide of the Australian Prisoner X had happened to another detainee of a different nationality. How would the global media reaction differ? Would it have been as fervent as with the Australian Prisoner X?
Just look to the cases of the Lebanese and Iranian detainees, specifically with the three Iranian diplomats and General Asgari. Iran repeatedly declared that it had evidence as to their whereabouts, and the Iranian press reported extensively on the matter. Yet "Israeli" denials were enough to refute the Iranian account. Western and "Israeli" reports did not stop there, and Iran was even mocked as a source of fabricated news.

The same applies to cases involving Lebanese citizens, such as Skaf. "Israel" cannot possibly deny it has him, and that he had entered occupied Palestine. For one thing, Tel Aviv's claims about Skaf and his lost body make little sense. If he had been a citizen of Australia, or other nations of similar stature, "Israel's" account would have differed.

"Israeli" assertions that Tel Aviv had kept the Australian government in the loop on Prisoner X created more - not less - ramifications. Indeed, "Israel" is not only able to hide the facts and detain people in secret, but also to involve Western governments in the cover-up.

Secret Prisoners of "Israel's" Past

Mohamad Bdeir

"Israel" is not only able to hide the facts and detain people in secret, but also to involve Western governments in the cover-up.

Ben Zygier's is not the first case where the authorities in Tel Aviv detained someone in secret, isolating them from the outside world and denying their existence. The "Israeli" tradition in this regard dates back to the 1950s, with the precedent set in the arrest of Mordechai ‘Motke' Kedar.

Kedar served in Unit 131 of the military intelligence and was detained for the murder of an agent working for Mossad during a mission in Argentina.

When Kedar was arrested in 1957, his imprisonment was kept under wraps. The only details that surfaced at the time were reported by the "Israeli" daily Yedioth Ahronot, It was able to report the detention of a "secret agent" before the military censors in Israel imposed a gag order.

Kedar remained in a secret section of the Ramle prison for 17 years. He was also nicknamed "Prisoner X." After his 1974 release, he immediately left "Israel". Kedar returned in the 1990s to demand a retrial, but to no avail.

After Kedar, there was the case of Shabtai Kalmanovich, a Lithuanian Jew who was recruited by the KGB in exchange for allowing him to emigrate from the USSR to "Israel". There, he became active in the Labor party, and served as a parliamentary assistant for a Labor MP.
Kalmanovich was arrested years later on charges of passing information to Soviet intelligence for 17 years. He spent five years in prison before he was granted an early release due to his health. In 2009, Kalmanovich was shot dead by unknown assailants in Moscow and was buried afterwards in Israel.

Avraham Marcus Klingberg, a Polish Jew, was another secret detainee. He enlisted in the Red Army during World War II and then emigrated to "Israel". Klingberg served in the "Israeli" army, and rose through the ranks to lieutenant colonel. After that, he served as the deputy head of a biological institute that was responsible, according to press reports, for weapons research.

He was arrested in 1977, and during his interrogation, he admitted that he had been working for the Soviets for 20 years, during which he relayed classified information on "Israel's" biological and chemical weapons research.

Klingberg was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but his detention was kept secret for ten years. In the late ‘90s, his sentence was shifted to house arrest. In 2003, he left "Israel" to live in France.

Another case involves Mordechai Vanunu, the famous nuclear whistleblower who was kidnapped by Mossad in Italy in 1986. Vanunu was tried and jailed in "Israel" for 18 years for exposing secrets related to the "Israeli" nuclear program that employed his as a technician.

Similarly, Yitzhak Yaakov, a brigadier general in the "Israeli" army reserve, was arrested and tried in secret in 2001 for disclosing national security secrets in his autobiography.
In most cases where the "Israeli" authorities engaged in secret proceedings and cover-ups, the excuse cited was preserving national security secrets. However, there are other cases where "Israel" secretly detained people for years after kidnapping them.
One prominent case of this kind involves six Lebanese prisoners who were handed over to "Israel" by the Lebanese Forces in the late 1980s. "Israel" kept their detention secret for over seven years before notifying the International Committee of the Red Cross of their existence as part of negotiations for a prisoner swap with the Resistance.

Sayyed Nasrallah on Leader Martyrs Day: Resistance Ready, Possesses All Armaments for Any Future Confrontation with “Israel"

Details...Zeinab Essa

On the Day of the Martyr Leaders [Sayyed Abbas Mousawi, Sheikh Ragheb Harb, and Hajj Imad Moghniyeh], Hizbullah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah delivered a speech in which he tackled various regional and internal developments on top of which the "Israeli" threats.

Sayyed Nasrallah's speech came during a ceremony at Sayyed Shuhada'a complex in Dahiya [Beirut's Southern suburb] under the slogan: On the Path to Palestine.

On the Commemoration

The Leader of the resistance welcomed via video-link all participants in the commemoration as he paid tribute to the families of the martyrs and the martyr leaders.

"In this memory we vow to honor the will and the cause of the martyrs," His Eminence stressed, and pointed out that "in this anniversary, we learn to inspire, renew our vow and pledge, preserve the will, and remain the men of position."

His Eminence further stated that "these martyr leaders remain the witnesses of all stages of the resistance."

On the Martyr Leaders, Sayyed Nasrallah highlighted: "Martyr Sheikh Ragheb was a witness of the foundation, leadership and decisive choices. Sayyed Abbas was a witness on the stage of stability and focus and consistency in the path of resistance. Martyr Haj Imad was a witness on the stage of the quantitative and qualitative development as well as on achievements and victories."

In this context, His Eminence called for being faithful to the martyrs' will and to the cause.
"The biggest threat in the region is "Israel" and Zionism," he said, and highlighted that "the only logical choice is popular resistance to face the "Israeli" threat."

He also warned of the dangers of adopting narrow thinking, regarding regional issues. "The resistance achievements form evidence of its capabilities: from the liberation to the deterrence power and protection of the country."

On the Path to Palestine

As Sayyed Nasrallah revealed that "the future will reveal the aspects of cooperation between the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance," he mentioned: "For 30 years the resistance was one of the strongest realities that changed regional strategies."

"The Lebanese resistance has helped the Palestinian resistance by all means to become strong. The resistance succeeded when the Lebanese stood by its side and the people were the ones to achieve the liberation," His Eminence clarified.

In parallel, Sayyed Nasrallah revealed that "the martyr Haj Imad had many major roles in communicating, and transferring experience between Lebanon and Palestine."

He offered his condolences to the Iranian Republic over the martyrdom of the Iranian official Houssam Khoshnevis. "All these martyrs fell on the path to Palestine as they were linked to Palestine, and its sanctities in a relationship based on faith, devotion, love, passion and great concern."

On the regional level, His Eminence saluted the Bahraini revolution as he hoped that national dialogue will be able to achieve people's aspirations in the country.

Regarding the threats of an "Israeli" war on Lebanon, the Hizbullah chief viewed that "an anticipated "Israeli" war against Lebanon are mere inventions that were disseminated by local factions instead of the Zionist entity."

He stated that "Israel" implicated Hizbullah right after Burgas bombing. ""Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu immediately accused Hizbullah."

"Many Lebanese sides were quick to adopt the accusation, sue us and enter Lebanon in the economic and political consequences for the possibility of naming us on the international terrorism list. "They even prepared themselves to topple the government," Sayyed Nasrallah iterated.

His Eminence said: "I don't want to comment on the Bulgarian accusations. This issue is being looked at in a patient and calm manner and we will see later how to deal with it depending on the outcome."

However, the leader of the resistance accused some Lebanese and Arab media outlets of taking advantage of the incident to tarnish the resistance's image.

"The worst thing here is: that all this talk about a possible war by "Israel" on Lebanon was done by Lebanese and Arab media outlets and figures," he said.

Meanwhile, Sayyed Nasrallah explained that "some people hope to exploit the Syrian crisis, to attack Lebanon and try to eliminate the resistance, as Damascus is occupied in its war and is unable at the moment to aid the resistance in Lebanon in a war against "Israel"."

Resistance Ready

""Israel" does not need a pretext to launch any aggression on Lebanon. In 1982, "Israel" accused the Palestinian factions of the attempt to assassinate the "Israeli" ambassador in London and waited no investigation or charge, yet directly attacked Lebanon" he added.
However, His Eminence assured that "the resistance is ready and possesses all armaments and weapons required and needed to face any "Israeli" aggression without the need of Iranian or Syrian aid."

"The resistance will respond to any attack against Lebanese territories," he stressed, and assured that "nowadays, and particularly after the 2000 liberation, the "Israelis" count thousands of times before even thinking of carrying any attack on Lebanon."

Sayyed Nasrallah also affirmed that the resistance is able to target the infrastructure of the Zionist entity. He vowed with the great honored blood of the martyr leaders that the resistance has greater determination and a stronger will to confront any aggression, and preserve the martyrs' will."

"Still our respond and account with the "Israeli" is open," His Eminence asserted.

Sayyed Nasrallah Slams Hariri's Provocation:

On the domestic level, Sayyed Nasrallah responded to allegations that head of the Future Movement, MP Saad Hariri mentioned during the commemoration of late Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri's assassination earlier on Thursday.

"Reducing the number of Shiite ministers aimed at giving a chance to a reputable historical family in Lebanon, the Karami family, to take part in the political life. And the scarified Shiite minister belonged to Amal Movement and not Hizbullah," His Eminence stated in response to Hariri's accusation to Hizbullah of paying bribes to preserve the resistance arms.

Concerning the Special Tribunal to Lebanon, the resistance leader expressed Hizbullah's understanding to Prime Minister Najib Mikati's position: "Does this form a bribe or shame? PM Miqati and his government will remain faithful to the resistance."
Furthermore, Sayyed Nasrallah commented on accusing Hizbullah of supporting MP Michel Aoun's proposed Orthodox Gathering electoral law for the same purpose of preserving arms.
"We favor an electoral law that considers Lebanon a one single electoral district and adopts proportional representation, but we do support Christians' call for just representation and hence, we will go with the Orthodox suggestion," he reiterated.

In this context, Sayyed Nasrallah reminded that "since 2006, General Aoun was decisive in his choices as he stood by the resistance when it was required to crush Hizbullah. His position was based on moral and national aspects. "Was this position in sake of the Orthodox proposal?" he wondered.

His Eminence went on to comment on the allegations concerning Hizbullah's relation with the National Struggle Front leader, MP Walid Jumblatt. "He has a clear stance towards the resistance but we are divided on Syria's conflict, and we will not encourage tension in the country because of our different views on this topic."

"The resistance is a priority to us because Lebanon and the region are threatened and it is the only mean for defense," he said, and noted that "all what leads to transmitting the Syrian conflict to Lebanon is a big mistake."

Did You or Your Father Receive Bribe?

In parallel, Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that "we agreed on the four-party alliance in the 2005 parliamentary elections to preserve national unity and avoid the Sunni-Shiite strife."
"You suggested neutralizing the issue of the resistance's arm to support you to head the government but we rejected, because we want a prime minister that resides inside Lebanon and is available in the country," he stated.

As he slammed Hariri's provocative speech, Sayyed Nasrallah wondered: "Had your father received a bribe when he vowed to reserve the resistance arms until a comprehensive Arab-"Israeli" agreement?"

Moreover, His Eminence revealed that "the late PM even pledged to resign and travel if Sayyed Nasrallah didn't agree to deliver weapons once all Arabs reach a compromise with "Israel", rather than get into conflict with the Resistance over such a matter."

"Disarming Hizbullah was not mentioned in the Doha accord that you agreed on and the resistance was an exception to handing over the weapons by other groups in the country. Have you agreed in receiving a bribe," he clarified.

Addressing Hariri, Sayyed Nasrallah said: "You proposed to neutralize the arms of the resistance if we agreed to support you as a premier."

He pointed out that Hizbullah rejected the deal over "national interests."

Nasrallah stressed that "if the weapons of the resistance weren't to confront "Israel" it wouldn't be worth the sacrifice."

Sayyed Nasrallah once again reiterated "Hizbullah's commitment to equal power-sharing and this is why we agreed on the Orthodox Gatherings draft law."
"We want a Lebanese Prime Minister, who lives in Lebanon, and follows up the ministers and governmental issues," he said.

"We do not want to take over the country and monopolize the rule, we believe in sharing power. We want the establishment of a state in Lebanon and we believe in the Taif accord," he concluded.

Yahya Abu Zakariya: "Dropping al-Mayadin first fig leaf first "

In Memory of Mahmud Darwish – A Poem

By Manash Bhattacharjee

I learnt from your poems how
To wait upon death
And how waiting is a game as
Treacherous as death.

I learnt from you how the root
Of waiting is grasped in despair
And that there is no despair
More deceitful than hope.

Waiting helped you gather those
Roses along the way
Which grow only for travellers
Who walk the loneliest road.

You kept those roses as mementos
Of your nights when gunshots
Would remind you of the difficulty
To make love under the moon.

As you carried the landscape on
Your shoulders and looked
For your address in the clouds
The enemy laughed.

They thought you will grow weary
From repeating the same lines of loss
But they didn’t know those without a home
Are always hungry for memory.

Mali, Algeria, Libya: the real reason Britain signed up for war on Africa

The truth behind the 'war on terror' is that it is part of Western powers' imperialistic quest to secure natural resource reserves for their corporations

By Patrick Kane
Huff Post
14 February 2013

With the start of 2013 the 'war on terror' has burst back into the headlines. The attack on a BP gas plant in Algeria sparked declarations from David Cameron which identified North Africa as the new front line.

Already the UK has backed military intervention in Mali and upgraded military support for Algeria and Libya. In Algeria, Cameron announced a strengthened 'military partnership' to combat terrorism and "improve security in the region", and in Libya he pledged more British training for security forces and support for securing the country's borders.

The reality of the never-ending 'war on terror' is that it is integrally bound up with an imperialistic drive for resources.

Central to understanding David Cameron's rapid reaction to events in North Africa is a government document published in November last year to little or no fanfare.

That document is the UK's Energy Security Strategy, released by the Department for Energy and Climate Change: the first time the UK has ever produced such a strategy. The document rings the alarm for the UK's future energy security, stating, "Declining reserves of fossil fuels in the North Sea are making the UK increasingly dependent on imports at a time of rising global demand and increased resource competition", which is leaving the UK "increasingly exposed to the pressures and risks of global markets".

The point is illustrated with some dramatic statistics: UK oil production, which currently provides for 70% of UK oil demand, is "expected to decrease by 5% per year", meaning that within 20 years the North Sea oil supplies will have run out, leaving the UK completely dependent upon imports, whilst global demand for oil is predicted to increase by 15% by 2035.

There will be even more competition for gas supplies, with global demand forecast to rise by 55% by 2035. Again, declining North Sea supplies mean that the UK will go from importing about 50% of the gas it uses currently "to nearly 70% by 2025".

At international level, the document identifies the importance of "energy diplomacy" in securing UK supplies of oil and gas for the future. Energy diplomacy, it says, includes "maximising commercial opportunities" for UK corporations, forcing open new markets to guarantee them unrestricted access to valuable energy resources.

Here we get to the crux of the strategy: it is not the ordinary UK citizen that is being protected- for evidence look no further than the exorbitant energy bills crippling Britain's poor- but the interests of UK corporations which supply the energy.

This 'energy diplomacy' is of course a euphemism for militaristic British foreign policy. This includes the provision of military aid and weapons sales to regimes which control strategic energy reserves regardless of how repressive and violent they may be, as well as the readiness to use military force against states or groups which threaten UK energy security interests or those of UK allies.

Of course, militaristic British policy focussed upon securing energy resources at the expense of human rights is not new, for evidence just look at Nigeria. What we are witnessing currently is an increased sense of urgency to take control of strategic energy resources.

The Ministry of Defence in 2010 laid out its analysis of future strategic threats to the UK, and predicted that in coming years major powers are "likely to use their defence forces to safeguard supplies [of hydrocarbons]". It identified North Africa as a strategically important area where a key focus of European states' engagement will be on securing access to energy resources.

The military cooperation agreements announced last month with Algeria and Libya are part of UK 'energy diplomacy' aimed at securing access to strategic resources in North Africa. Both countries are identified in the UK Energy Security Strategy as producers of gas and oil which are important trading partners and hence countries which are important to the UK's energy security.

Algeria now supplies 5% of the UK's gas needs, whilst Libya is not only an important trading partner, but is a country whose oil supply is so important to the global oil market that the price of oil rose by 10-20% when armed conflict erupted there in 2011. Before the conflict in Libya had even finished, it was reported that BP had begun talks with rebel leaders aimed at securing access to the country's oil wealth, and the French foreign minister publicly stated that it was "fair and logical" for French companies to benefit after French military intervention in the country.

In Mali, France's UK-backed intervention is in support of a regime which violently seized power in a coup d'etat last April which led to the country's suspension from the African Union. Could the large, as yet unexploited uranium and oil reserves thought to be contained in the deserts of Northern Mali and Eastern Niger explain the eagerness to back such a regime?
For a clear example of the link between Western commercial energy interests and militarism in North Africa, just look over the border from Mali at Niger. Last week, the president of Niger announced that French special forces have been deployed to the country to protect the huge Arlit uranium mine owned by French multinational Areva, in response to instability in the region. French companies used to have exclusive access to uranium supplies in Niger, however a change in government policy in 2007 ended the exclusivity, meaning they now face competition from Chinese and Indian companies.

The truth behind the 'war on terror' is that it is part of Western powers' imperialistic quest to secure natural resource reserves for their corporations. We should all fear for the peoples of energy-rich regions as the global resource grab plummets new depths.

Martyred Leaders: on the Road to Palestine They Fell

Eslam al-Rihani
The victory Hezbollah fighters achieved throughout a long journey of 31 years of Jihad against the Zionist entity targeting Lebanon hasn’t been happened by chance. There were 31 months of February, where each of them narrates its own story of sacrifice.

Hezbollah Martyred Leaders from left to right: Hajj Imad Moughnieh, Sayyed Abbas al-Moussawi, Sheikh Ragheb HarbUnder the Zionist invasion of Lebanon in 1982, and the submission of political echelon to Zionist agents and allies, Sheikh Ragheb Harb was the Imam who shouldered the responsibility of defending the people of the occupied south, without sparing any effort to address lectures after every Friday’s prayer. The lectures he delivered – especially during the last two years of his life - were carrying the essence of Jihad which led the regional Resistance against the Zionist occupation at that time.

Damo sh-Shaheed itha saqat, Fa bi yadellahi yasqot

“When the blood of a martyr falls, in the Hand of Allah it falls”
Sheikh Ragheb Harb
Living in the southern Lebanese village of Jibsheet amid Zionist troops wreaking havoc left and right, Sheikh Harb was the voice of truth, the sound of wisdom and the mirror of occupation for every single free man being oppressed.

The spiritual leadership of Sheikh Harb haunted the beds of Zionists. The entity which was bragging about its undefeatable arrogant power suddenly became panic and sent its recruited agent Danny Abdallah, a Lebanese criminal living now in Denmark, at the dawn of February 16, 1984, to assassinate the Sheikh and end his Jihadist course of life by the holy martyrdom.

If it weren’t for Sheikh Harb’s speech of mobilization against the brutal Zionist aggression, the Lebanese land wouldn’t be blessed by the victory of 1985, when the Zionist troops had forcibly withdrew from the major Lebanese cities and deployed over what they called later the “security zone.”

Hezbollah remained loyal to the memorial of Sheikh Ragheb Harb. It kept commemorating his martyrdom every year on the same day to ensure the commitment to the Resistance approach and the steadfastness of the southern people against the occupation.

Alwasseya l-asas hefthol Moqawama l-Islamiya

“The basic commandment is to save the Islamic Resistance”
Sayyed Abbas al-Moussawi
On the same day after eight years, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Abbas al-Moussawi, went to Jibsheet to attend the commemoration of Sheikh Harb’s martyrdom. In the meantime, Zionist apache helicopters were hovering over the area, and bombed the motorcade of the Sayyed on his way to Beirut, killing him, his wife, their five-year son and four other people.

However, the fruit of victory Hezbollah gained through the military operations carried out against the Zionist posts and soldiers along with the party’s progress, turned it to be a real threat to the occupation authority, which decided to assassinate its leaders, believing that cutting off the head of Resistance would weaken it and led to its defeat.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan NasrallahMoreover, Ronen Bergman, a Zionist investigative journalist and author, argued at that time that assassination of Sayyed Moussawi would lead to changes in the course of Middle Eastern history, and he was totally right. The result of the murder didn’t meet the Zionists’ expectations; and on that day, Hezbollah declared a new dawn has been emerged by the appointment of Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah to be the new Secretary General of the party; the fact which imposed a new course of Resistance concepts.

The history records that since Sayyed Nasrallah mastered the leadership of Hezbollah, the party achieved the victory after the other, in which it became the savior of the oppressed peoples in the Middle East following the unconditional withdrawal of the Zionist troops from the largest part of the occupied southern Lebanon and the divine victory of 2006 it achieved. Those two victories were led by the invisible man, leader Hajj Imad Moughnieh.

Hezbollah leader Hajj Imad MoughniehMoughnieh had never appeared on TVs or published photos. He was the ghost of whom the enemy feared in every place and time, the real reason behind assassinating him in Syria on February 13, 2008. Yet, Martyr Hajj Imad had worked for the satisfaction of Allah and achieved great successes, the most of which hadn’t been tackled by media outlets.

No doubt that the blood of our martyred leaders will bring the decisive victory, the victory that Allah Almighty promised us to achieve, this victory of liberating the Holy Land of Palestine.

NATO originally set up as a mutual defence organisation, now it's all about mutual offence

U.S.-NATO Threats, From Europe To Middle East

natoNATO continues to surround the Russian Federation with their missiles, which according to Rozoff may soon number in the thousands and NATO also continues to aggressively seek to “integrate” country after country into their “alliance”. Rick tells us why the Western media has gone quiet on Syria and comments on the fact that Iran is now producing its own drones, which were reversed engineered from captured American drones. As always Rick has his finger on the pulse.

Robles: Can you give our listeners an update on the latest happenings with NATO please?

Rozoff: Yes. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is continuing its expansion, at least its efforts to expand globally. Within the last few days we’ve seen overtures made by leading NATO officials to previously neutral countries like Ireland, Finland, Sweden in efforts to recruit them into the alliance.

The Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen is in Ireland now, but prior to departing for Ireland, which historically has been a neutral nation, was during the Cold War, he gave an interview to the Irish Times where he extended an invitation essentially for Ireland to join NATO as a full member.

The Deputy Commander of Allied Command Transformation, the NATO command in the United States, in Norfolk, Virginia, within the last week or two as well has welcomed Finland, which borders Russia, as a strategic partner of NATO and talked about the further integration of that nation into the NATO sphere of influence and military operations.

And then the commander of the military forces, the top commander, in Sweden a couple of days ago made a very provocative statement to the effect that if a war ensued between Sweden and Russia – How probable is that, right? – that Sweden wouldn’t last two days against Russia’s military might and that’s why Sweden needs to be in NATO.

So, as we are seeing there is a concerted effort to consolidate North Atlantic Treaty Organization control over the entire European continent. I mean they are not going to rest until every nation has been pulled in it as a full member. So, we have that going on.

And then we have, although not formally a NATO operation, we have the French military campaign in Mali in northwest Africa with the active assistance of the United States, Britain, Germany and other major NATO powers. And so, just off the top of my head, that’s what is going on with NATO: it is consolidating its domination of Europe and it is extending its reach outside of Europe to the point where, an official with the German Marshall Fund of the United States, recently stated that NATO is basically, I don’t want to say a three-ring circus, but something to that effect, saying that there is a ring that is Europe and there is beyond that ring Asia and Africa. This is from Mark Jacobson. an Atlanticist think tank expert.

So, we see the persistence of the US-dominated military bloc’s efforts to extend itself. As a matter of fact, something I don’t want to forget, the current Russian ambassador to NATO, Alexander Grushko, said a couple of days ago at a meeting in NATO headquarters that Russia would not tolerate NATO declaring itself and functioning as, I believe his words were, “an international energy security guarantor”, which is another role that NATO has arrogated onto itself.

Reminder

Robles: Can you tell us anything about, there were reports last week that the infamous missile shield, including Romanian installations, was not workable? Have you heard anything about that?

Rozoff: Yes, there were reports to that effect and one wonders if these are calculated leaks or if they have any authenticity. I don’t know. But you might recall there were similar concerns expressed about the earlier George W. Bush administration’s plans for interceptor missiles in Poland, what are called Ground-Based Midcourse interceptors. But the concerns that you’ve read or you are alluding to rather are premised on the fact that Iran is supposedly going to be able to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles that need interception from places like Romania and Poland, and I would argue that’s an absurd contention in the first place. So, the basic premises and the conclusions drawn from them would be similarly inaccurate. So, I wouldn’t give too much credence to those reports. The US is still going ahead with them.

As a matter of fact, in a recent statement by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the NATO chieftain, he boasted particularly about the missile defense so-called, the interceptor missile system as being, as he put it, at the core of NATO’s defense posture.

He boasted about the deployment of 6 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptor missile batteries to southeastern Turkey which have now come unde formal NATO command and control. And he also talked about European countries emulating or joining the United States by providing warships with interceptor missile radar and with the interceptor missiles themselves.

We should keep in mind, and I don’t know how well it is known in Russia and elsewhere, is that the United States currently has 62 what are called Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers and 22 Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers, that is altogether 84 warships, that currently, at least the destroyers, can carry as many as 90 missiles apiece.

And it is precisely these ships that are now referred to as Aegis class or are in the process of becoming such; that is, are equipped to carry, or will be carrying, Standard Missile-3 interceptor missiles of the sort that are going to be based on the ground in Poland and Romania from 2015 to 2018. But the 48 missiles that are going to be in Poland and Romania, 24 apiece, are a formidable challenge enough to Russia. But the fact that there may be several hundred, even thousands, of missiles placed on the US cruisers and destroyers is a much more serious consideration.

Robles: Can you tell us a little bit about what is going on with Syria right now? Everything’s gotten real quiet. After they’ve put those missiles in Turkey, the Patriots you just spoke about, and as we’ve said in the past in our discussions: when they go quiet something is up.

Rozoff: I know what you are talking about John. Watching old adventure films, whenever the insects and the animals in the forest or the jungle became quiet, you became nervous. And a situation similar to that I’m sure is obtaining in relation to Syria.

We also have to remember, though, there is a changing of the guard in Washington. With the Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, who more than anyone else I’m sure has been instrumental in pushing through a campaign of regime change in Damascus, out and John Kerry replacing her as the chief foreign policy diplomat in the US, similarly with the Pentagon with the defense secretary and with the CIA director.

So, there may be a short reprieve for Damascus, for Syria at this point until the second-term Obama administration’s foreign policy team is in place in which case we may see them mounting an offensive again.

Robles: There were reports we’ve just had that Iran captured a US drone, last year, and they reverse engineered it and are now producing massive quantities of their own drones.

Rozoff: It would serve Washington right if they did. I mean it truthfully would. The US has pioneered international drone warfare, this is something it has developed over the last decade, actually over the last 12 years. It is a new form of warfare, it is global in scope, it is deadly as we know.

Sayyed Nasrallah: Hezbollah Fully Equipped, Won’t Tolerate Israeli Attack (updated)

Details...

Editor's note: In his speech today Sayyed Nasrallah did not touch directly the Syrian crisis, but warned that Israel could exploit the Syrian preoccupation with its internal situation to  attack  Lebanon.  He stressed that the resistance has everything need to defend Lebanon against any Israeli aggression, and continue its support of the Palestinian resistance until the liberation of Palestine from the sea to the river. Hezbollah would not be a part of any political settlement in the region and therefore the settlement will not be at the expense of Palestine.

=======
Batoul Wehbe
Sayyed NasrallahHezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said the resistance in Lebanon is fully equipped and will not tolerate any attack that might take place against Lebanon.

In a televised speech during a ceremony in commemoration of Hezbollah’s martyred leaders, Sayyed Nasrallah warned the Zionist entity and its allies that the Islamic resistance in Lebanon will not tolerate any attack against the Lebanese territory, assuring that Hezbollah is fully-equipped “and everything we need is found in Lebanon, we don't need to transfer it neither from Syria, nor Iran.”

His eminence considered that the Israeli knows that all we are saying is serious and therefore is mobilizing all its capabilities, and pointed out that when the Israeli enemy wants to attack Lebanon, it does not look for any excuse but invents one.

“30 years on, the Resistance project stands on a solid ground of equations, achievements and victories, not just dreams ought to be true. For 30 years the resistance was one of the strongest realities that changed regional strategies,” Sayyed Nasrallah said.

In the school of martyred leaders, Sayyed Nasrallah said, the priority was the resistance because the correct diagnosis of the biggest risk points to the Israeli enemy and the Zionist project.
“When we think deeply on Islamic and national levels we find that the most danger threatening the nation is "Israel", and the only logic choice is the popular resistance.”
The S.G. said Martyr Sheikh Ragheb Harb was a witness to the establishment of the resistance, leadership and decisive options, Sayyed Abbas Mousawi witnessed the stage of stability, focus and consistency in the resistance, and the martyr leader Hajj Imad Mughniyeh was a witness on the stage of quantitative and qualitative evolution as well as the stage of achievements and victories.
Hariri
Concerning Al-Mustaqbal Party leader MP Saad Hariri's speech during the commemoration of his late father PM Rafik Hariri's assassination, Sayyed Nasrallah said that reducing the number of Shiite ministers was aimed at giving a chance to a reputable historical family in Lebanon, the Karami family, to take part in the political life and wasn’t a bribe as the MP had claimed.

“We reject neutralizing Hezbollah’s weapons and the abolition of the International Tribunal, in return of putting the country under the control of a specific person, this is bribery. We do not want to maintain the arms rather we want to maintain the resistance, and if the weapons of the resistance weren't to confront Israel and defend Lebanon it wouldn't be worth the sacrifice,” his eminence said.

Sayyed Nasrallah told Hariri that through the Turkish-Qatari initiative “you offered us to keep our arms in return for backing you for premiership ad we didn’t accept you to be the PM out of national interests.”

His eminence desribed Saad Hariri’s speech is an insult to his father's history. “In the past, we met you martyred father and discussed about the resistance and its weapons, and we have already told him that our priority is the resistance and everything other than it is debatable. He told us: I am with you and I'm with the keeping of the resistance and its weapons until peace is established.”

“Did your father take a bribery from us?” the S.G wondered.

“When we deal with (Prime Minister Najib) Miqati's government, we are sure that it will not stab the resistance in its back. Miqati and his cabinet will remain faithful to the resistance,” his eminence indicated.

On relations with PSP leader MP Walid Jumblatt, Sayyed Nasrallah said Jumblatt “has a clear stance towards the resistance but we are divided on the Syrian crisis, and we will not encourage tension in the country because of our different views on this topic.” He added that the “split over the situation in Syria doesn't mean that we want the turmoil to spill over into Lebanon.”

Hezbollah’s secretary general Nasrallah hailed the Orthodox Gathering proposal, saying: “We are convinced that it achieves better representation even if we had a priority to make Lebanon one district based on proportional representation. We agreed on the Orthodox deaf-law and we will vote if it was proposed at the parliament.”

Concerning the Bulgarian accusation for Hezbollah as being behind Burgas airport attack where Five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian driver were killed last year, Sayyed Nasrallah rejected the accusations as baseless.

“[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu immediately blamed Hezbollah of being behind the attack... But Israel doesn’t wage a war as a reaction,” H.E said in his speech. In this regard, Sayyed Nasrallah denounced some parts who believed this claim and based their measures on it, including Lebanese parts.

The S.G. offered condolences over the martyrdom of the head of the Iranian Committee for Reconstruction of Lebanon, engineer Hussam Khoshnevis while he was on his way to Lebanon from Syria.

He also saluted the Bahraini revolution, expressing hope that the national dialogue will achieve people’s aspirations.

US-BACKED FSA FAIL TO ACHIEVE ANY VICTORY IN SYRIA

US-BACKED FSA FAIL TO ACHIEVE ANY VICTORY IN SYRIA
Posted on February 12, 2013 by Alexandra Valiente

A Damascus based political analyst believes that the position of foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the Syrian government, due to heavy losses, is too weak to bring a solution to the negotiation table.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian security forces, have been killed in the turmoil. Several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.

In an interview with Press TV, Ala’a Ebrahim, a freelance journalist and analyst from Damascus, shares his thoughts regarding the issue.

Mufti Ahmad Badrideen Hassoun: Syria Paying Price of Facing "Israel", Tending to Heal Wounds

Local Editor

Syrian Grand Mufti, Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, said that Syria is now tending to heal its wounds so that it may rebuild itself.
In an interview with al-Maydin TV, Hassoun viewed that "Syria is paying the price of its support for Arab causes and its refusal to submitting to US-"Israeli" dictations and projects."

"The world will soon see the birth of a new Syria which learned new lessons after the schemes it faced for the past two years," he, said, and stressed that "freedom comes from the people, not from abroad, and that the Arab world is still embroiled in the chaos of the so-called "Arab spring"."

In parallel, he confirmed that the political program presented by President Bashar al-Assad is more comprehensive than the Geneva statement, affirming that Syria's doors are open wide to all those who wish to participate in dialogue.

Hassoun pointed out that before the crisis in Syria began, Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan told him that he respects President al-Assad and is worried for Syria from coming chaos.

Later, he was surprised later by Erodgan's stances as he wondered: "For who's sake did Turkey open its borders and allow murderers and thieves to cross into Syria?"

Moreover, he urged Islamic scholars to be aware of the western countries who came to Iraq and destroyed it under the pretense of liberating it, affirming that these countries want to do the same thing in Syria, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and the rest of the region.

WEIR: Are they just waiting for Samer Issawi to die?

 February 15, 2013

by Alison Weir - Counterpunch – 13 February 2013

Samer Issawi has lived for 33 years, 1 month, and 27 days. I hope he lives another day.
He has been on a hunger strike now for six and a half months. Gandhis’ longest hunger strike was 21 days.

The IRA’s Bobby Sands and nine other Irish hunger strikers died in 1981 after strikes lasting from 46 to 73 days.

Issawi’s internal organs are starting to shut down, he can no longer walk, he is reportedly suffering loss of vision and vomiting blood, it is difficult for him talk, and he is increasingly near death. He has lost over half his body weight.

One of the main ideas behind such nonviolent resistance is that world awareness will bring pressure on behalf of the sufferer.

Yet, U.S. news outlets are not covering Issawi’s hunger strike. It appears that the Associated Press has not run a single news story on Issawi’s strike and refuses to answer queries on the subject. Read More…
