ISIS’ fighting doctrine: Sorting fact from fiction

A careful and specialized examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the fighting doctrine and the military performance of suicidal salafi jihadi groups, such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is yet to be done. Such a study has not been carried out by official military authorities in countries directly affected, such as Iraq and Syria, or by scholars specialized in studying these groups. Nevertheless, it is possible to review some of the information on the issue found in different publications.
Let us begin with the simple but valuable remarks written by a rank and file Iraqi fighter in the Iraqi army nicknamed Abu Musa, whom we had referred to previously in an articlepublished in Al-Akhbar [in Arabic] on October 21. This fighter participated in many of the armed confrontations with ISIS after the fall of Mosul on June 10, 2014. He noted with his piercing vision and insight and through his personal combat experience certain observations which he posted on social networking sites on July 15. In these observations, which were printed by several Iraqi newspapers and news websites, he summarized the principles of ISIS’ offensive and defensive operations and how they should be responded to.
Sniping, booby-trapping and suicide bombings
This fighter tells us that during attack operations, ISIS uses mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), then pushes its fighters who are carrying these bombers and heavy machine guns – DShK 1938 (Dushka) – to reign down heavy fire on the enemy while its snipers hunt resisters at the height of the attack.
We can conclude from this observation that the important contribution by ISIS lies in the intensity of firepower during a swift attack and in changing the definition and function of sniping from a marginal and clandestine security tactic outside the context of the main battle to a tactic of engagement not only within the battle but at its peak. This development has achieved important results on the ground.
Abu Musa adds that
“in cases of attack from remote distances or long-range engagement, ISIS sends suicide bombers driving trucks or car bombs and other fighters some of them carrying explosive belts but not all of them are booby-trapped to instill terror in the ranks of those resisting them. Then they send detachments armed with heavy machine guns (PKC and Dushka) to the battle that is, by now, almost decided in their favor.”

We notice then that suicide attack operations are not only meant to inflict heavy losses within the ranks of the enemy, but to strike at its psychological cohesion and morale. There is a recent example of this that we can cite. Blowing up a booby-trapped fuel tank near al-Mosul Hotel the day the city fell had a tremendous impact psychologically and in terms of morale, as acknowledged by a senior military Iraqi commander.
As to how ISIS organizes its defense when it is attacked, Abu Musa noted that
“ISIS’ resistance is simple and easy, especially in street battles where the Iraqi army’s traditional combat method of reliance on infantry should be changed to reliance on snipers equipped with advanced, long-range scoped sniper rifles and on armored vehicles equipped with single, double or quadruple barreled machine guns.” He added: “Killing ISIS members in any clash by well-hidden snipers throws them off balance and prompts them to make mistakes that nearly push them to suicide as they reveal their whereabouts, becoming easy prey to security forces with all their weapons.”
Abu Musa concluded:
“Whoever wants to defeat ISIS has to rely on snipers equipped with advanced sniping rifles and on armored vehicles that protect their personnel against ISIS snipers and are equipped with single and double barreled dushkas in addition to increasing the number of PKC-carrying security forces in every company or brigade. Finally, providing air cover is very important in battles against ISIS but it might lose its value during short-range combat because enemies’ trenches are so close.”
Increasing the number of well-trained snipers, which Abu Musa noted and called for emulating, is not the decisive factor in ISIS’ defensive strategy. There is another element that is no less important, namely, densely and intelligently booby-trapping the areas being defended with improvised explosive devises (IEDs) and mines. This way a fighter attacking ISIS’ defenses is caught between two fires, the fire of the snipers stationed in high places and the fire of the mines and IEDs that completely pave the target area. This three-pronged strategy (sniping, booby-trapping and suicide bombings) has succeeded in all the cities that ISIS militants entered and from which government forces have not been able to expel them. Falluja and Tikrit serve as the best examples of this strategy.
The more important question is why don’t government forces and the civilian forces helping them embrace this strategy and abandon the traditional method adopted back in World War I of attacking with piles of infantry units to prevent more cities from falling, especially that these plans have become public and well-known?
The writings of Abu Musa and others like him about the importance of snipers were taken into consideration. There has been talk that the Iraqi military leadership is moving towards more reliance on snipers. Information has been published – even though keeping military secrets requires not publishing such information – about campaigns to prepare and train thousands of snipers in many provinces. The authorities have benefited from individuals with “innately or naturally good aiming skills.” It was said that the number of volunteers in just the province of Dhi Qar reached 5,000 snipers. However, these measures have not paid off yet in a tangible way.
The ongoing battle of Kobane, where fighters from the People’s Protection Units close to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey are defending the city against ISIS militants, provides a valuable lesson in this regard. These fighters, despite their modest weapons capabilities compared with ISIS’ heavy weaponry, relied on snipers and small and mobile fidayeen units. They have heroically persevered so far and have inflicted heavy losses on their enemy which has disappointed those who have counted on Kobane’s defeat, including US and Turkish generals claiming to “fight terrorism.” These fighters have, at minimum, delayed the sacking of their city and they might be able to prevent it altogether if they are armed well and provided with effective air cover.
Recognizing ISIS’ strengths
Since we are discussing ISIS’ combat performance and war strategy, let us consider their areas of strength as observed by Hisham al-Hashimi, an Iraqi scholar who is well-versed in the affairs of salafi jihadi groups. His writings explain the vast difference between the media image of ISIS and its allies created by Iraqi security, media and political officials and the reality on the ground. This discrepancy between the reality and the fabricated image is a disservice to those designing a sound military strategy aimed at defeating this enemy. He who does not know his enemy well and provides a false image of him to his people and his army will not be able to win. As the old saying goes, you have to know your enemies in order to defeat them.

Let us briefly review what we think is the most important part of Hashimi’s observations.
Hashimi notes that ISIS has a specialized military leadership council that plans, oversees and leads military operations. Other sources say that most members of this council were officers in the army under the former Iraqi regime who have a lot of experience including the group’s caliphate, Ibrahim Awwad al-Samarrai or Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – who was an officer in the army – and his four senior aids. Hashimi also underscores the strength and skill of the group’s intelligence and security agency which no hostile agency has been able to penetrate or obstruct. According to specialized sources, this military council consists of eight to 13 members, all of them Iraqi. It is led by four men who were senior officers under Saddam and headed by a former colonel whose nom de guerre is Hajji Bakr and who joined the group under its slain leader Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.
Hashimi points out that the group’s leaders know the geography of the land they are fighting for very well. They use military deception and hit and run tactics, they create weak combat axes with a lot of media fanfare to distract from the next target and they use the element of surprise and the shock doctrine when waging an attack. We saw that in the battles to control Hit, Kabisa and al-Kilo 35 area on October 13 while the main secret target all along was the centers of Ramadi and Haditha.
Even though I agree with the essence of what Hashimi says, I have reservations about the claim that “they know the geography of land they are fighting over.” Even if that were true, its significance will still be in question for two reasons. One, ISIS’ enemies are also Iraqis fighting on their land and they know its geography well. Two, the majority of second-tier leaders and middle cadres in ISIS are foreigners and not Iraqis, so it is impossible for them to know the geography of the country more than its people.
We can also agree with what Justin Bronk, a research analyst in the military sciences program at the Royal United Services Institute in London, wrote. He rightly pointed to another ISIS military advantage.“A particular speciality is outflanking defensive positions and then mopping up defenders who attempt to retreat. The tactic is as much psychological as it is kinetic, and is greatly magnified by the horrendous and public brutality ISIS has systematically exhibited wherever it has gained control.
Even well-motivated and equipped troops are likely to contemplate tactical withdrawals if outflanked and in danger of being surrounded by an unknown number of fanatical mass murderers with apparently superior weaponry and tactics. Whereas in Mosul, the defenders are poorly motivated, even small ISIS attacks are capable of provoking mass panic and routs.”
This psychological warfare that Bronk is talking about, saw its worst expression in the despicable Speicher massacre committed by ISIS militants which tainted them and whoever defends them or justifies their crimes with eternal shame. However, some analysts, eyewitnesses from the area and controversial MP Mishaan al-Jabouri accused supporters of Saddam Hussein’s regime and relatives of a number of his officials who were executed of carrying out this massacre while falsely raising ISIS flags. Names and pictures of these people killing unarmed prisoners have been published. More than 1,700 soldiers and prisoner students at the air force college were killed in this massacre.
ISIS’ bloody and immoral tactic of killing prisoners prompted some military units not to withdraw even when withdrawal was the right decision and was necessary, only to be encircled and later stormed by the enemy. This is what happened in Saqlawiyah and Sajar camps in Anbar province resulting in a catastrophe and human losses. The Iraqi leadership bears responsibility for these losses and for failing to avoid them.

ISIS’ strategy, however, failed in the battle of Ain al-Arab/Kobane against Kurdish Syrian fighters. Even though the outcome of the battle has not been decided yet, the steadfastness of those defending the city this entire time is a huge military victory for them. Bronk continues: “Kobane is an unusual operation for ISIS fighters in some respects, ... Despite having surrounded Kobane and conducting aggressive and apparently well-coordinated infiltration attempts from multiple approaches, the sort of street-to-street "meat grinder" that Kobane has become does not play to ISIS's strengths.
Against an enemy with nowhere to retreat to and air support, a numerically limited force such as ISIS that normally relies as much on psychological effects as firepower to take ground faces a tough challenge. This is just as well since on the ground, it is only the bravery of lightly armed Kurdish fighters standing between ISIS and control of the town. Airstrikes are essential but could not keep ISIS out of the town alone.”
In other words, the deciding factor in Kobane’s perseverance, as Bronk argues and we agree with him wholeheartedly, is not the air strikes by the international coalition but the strength, courage and flexibility of the heroic Kurdish resistance’s tactics on the ground and their willingness to sacrifice. That is how they defeated the ISIS myth and tangibly proved that it is not a legend but just a myth that can easily be disproved and defeated.

Ukraine: New World Odor – Shocking Conspiracy to Hide a Genocide

Ukraine: New World Odor - Shocking Conspiracy to Hide a Genocide. 53877.jpeg
Ukraine: Hundreds of women have been found with bullets in their skulls, most of them have been raped. Prisoners falling into the hands of fascist junta forces are tortured, abused and murdered execution style after suffering beatings and starvation. There is a humanitarian crisis in Novorossiya but Russian aid is hampered.

At this moment, an orgy of fascist/Nazi brutality, murder and destruction is going on in the former Ukraine, now the independent State of Novorossiya. When installing its puppets/trained agents as the “government” in Kiev, overthrowing the government democratically elected by the people, the west declared that this entity was a paragon of democratic values and new-found dignity. But since that time, the fascist junta has been anything but democratic, let alone displaying any semblance of dignity.

They have been holding their own people hostage in an ongoing gas war with Russia, withholding payment for their bad debts and pretending they are still entitled to special privileges for pricing.

All opposition is brutally suppressed. Fights go on in the legislative body, people are assaulted, robbed and beaten in the streets and thrown into garbage cans. Many are kidnapped, either forced into military service or just killed/tortured…never to be seen again.

Can any reader here not feel utter disgust for the Kiev junta forces and its backers of the New World Odor, the almighty self-proclaimed “international community” when seeing this? Can anyone think of covering it up, instead of prosecuting the war criminals? Does anyone here think that an illegal “government,” using its resources for death and destruction, deserves any sort or financial or military support?

Denied by the New World Odor, nevertheless, fascist and Nazi elements are running amok in the former Ukraine, which can now rightly be called Banderastan, for its glorification of fascist Nazi collaborator, Stepan Bandera. Evidence of these extremist elements has been outlined by Tony Cartalucci:

OSCE observers have widely documented the plethora of war crimes being committed by the fascist junta forces. However, they are the stooge of the New World ODOR, and nothing is being said or done: no punishment, and no sanctions or legal action is being taken against the perpetrators. To the contrary, the west pours aid into the puppet agents, promising weapons, loans and most of all its silence on the continuing Genocidal violence.

Over 4,000 innocent civilians have been murdered, including many children. Over 10,000 persons have been injured or maimed for life. Mass graves have been uncovered.

Hundreds of women have been found with bullets in their skulls, most of them have been raped. Prisoners falling into the hands of fascist junta forces are tortured, abused and murdered execution style after suffering beatings and starvation.

There is a humanitarian crisis in Novorossiya as food, water and other materials vital for human survival are in short supply. Every time Russia tries to send aid and supplies to these suffering people, the New World Odor lodges loud, rabid, cynical complaints. At least 16 elderly persons have starved to death while hiding in their basements from the constant barrage of shelling from junta artillery.

The corporate western media has been keeping a lid on these egregious war crimes. There was supposedly a ceasefire agreement, but this same corporate western media pretends that it is actually being honored by Kiev. Their narrative has people being “caught in the crossfire” which is a total distortion of reality. The victims are not in defense forces positions.

Since it can no longer be hidden from view, Kiev junta forces have even been accused by human rights organizations of using illegal weaponry: cluster bombs, phosphorous weapons and powerful Tochka-U missiles. The junta forces have been unable to counter the defense forces of Novorossiya, mainly because they spend their time and energy attacking the innocent civilians in their murderous orgy of hate against those who refuse to submit to a foreign controlled pseudo-government in Kiev, those they have been programmed to consider “different” meaning Russian speakers, “Moskals”.

A dirty, punitive war continues on non-combatant men, women and children. Residential neighborhoods are bombed and shelled. Banned chemical and other terror weapons are used.

Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) member of parliament Miroslav Rudenko said:

“According to our soldiers’ information, the Ukrainian forces are using chemical ammunition on DPR territory.”
“Once a shell bursts, a gas affecting sense organs is emitted. We have this information.”

Freedom fighters reported “irrefutable evidence” of a weapon used similar to white phosphorous. It burns flesh to the bone. It keeps burning until entirely consumed or deprived of oxygen.
The Hague and Geneva Conventions categorically prohibit use of these type weapons. It doesn’t matter. Kiev uses them against civilians.

The Ukraine Army, backed by both the U.S. and NATO throughout its military campaign against Novorossiya defense forces, fired cluster munitions on the city of Donetsk earlier this month, according to a Human Rights Watch investigation and independent reporting by the New York Times. Citing the HRW report, physical evidence and its own interviews with both witnesses and victims, the Times reports:
“Sites where rockets fell in the city on Oct. 2 and Oct. 5 showed clear signs that cluster munitions had been fired from the direction of army-held territory, where misfired artillery rockets still containing cluster bomblets were found by villagers in farm fields.

The two attacks wounded at least six people and killed a Swiss employee of the International Red Cross based in Donetsk.”

Rockets tracked down several rockets in the area, which appeared to have malfunctioned and fallen to the ground shortly after launching, clearly establish the flight path of the rockets. In the 12 incidents documented by Human Rights Watch, cluster munitions killed at least 6 people and injured dozens. The real casualty number from use of cluster munitions in the conflict is probably higher, Human Rights Watch said, since it has not investigated all allegations of cluster munition use.

In response to these horrendous war crimes, the “Big 7″ representing the self-proclaimed “international community” dubbed by this author as the New World Odor responded thusly:

Statement by the leaders of the “Big Seven”

“We, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, as well as chairman of the European Council and European Commission President united today to condemn a clear violation of the Russian Federation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, contrary to Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter and its agreement with Ukraine on military bases of 1997. We call upon Russia to resolve any issues related to security or human rights, through direct negotiations with Ukraine and / or with the participation of international observers or mediators acting under the auspices of the UN or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. We are ready to assist in this.

We also call on all parties to act with restraint and responsibly as possible and strive to reduce tensions.”
One would suspect that having discovered the ongoing Holocaust perpetrated by Hitler and the fascist/Nazi forces against the population of Europe, they would have responded exactly the same.
On October 26th, the fascist junta, with no legal justification whatsoever, held a farcical “election.” Only approved candidates or parties allowed. The Ukrainian Communist Party has been banned. This was supposed to establish the legitimacy of the junta, even though their takeover was completely unconstitutional. How can they have elections when they themselves are illegitimate? How can they have elections while they attack their own people?

They even admit to “widespread fraud.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Wet59pGFBU4

How is the New World Odor able to hypocritically support an entity that commits war crimes, crimes that even Hitler’s Nazis would not do? Why is this self-proclaimed “international community” not doing anything and, worse than that, actively supporting these criminals? Every time Russia tries to get something done, they shut it down.

The “exceptional” ones think that their bombs, their guns, their weapons and hubris rule the world: full spectrum domination. This must come to an end. No longer should the world community tolerate this belligerence, bullying and blackmail to silence its victims.

Tomorrow, November 2nd, Novorossiya is holding elections. I fully expect that the fascist junta forces may very well launch an attack in order to disrupt these elections, most likely on orders from Washington. The US State Department is ordering everyone not to recognize these elections and demanding observation of the Kiev dictate for a farce “election” to take place on December 7th. Let the fascist junta forces be put on notice that we are on to them. These elections will take place, and they will express the will of the people of Novorossiya. Novorossiya has fought and died for its independence. There is no turning back the clock.

The New World Odor objects so strongly to Novorossiya’s right to fair and free elections, that they have threatened more sanctions against Russia since Russia is the only country actively supporting the people’s right to choose who will rule them. US stooge Ban Ki-Moon has warned against the elections in Novorossiya, along with NATO scum and the EU all chiming in.

The United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights forbids: torture and inhuman or degrading treatment, slavery or involuntary servitude, arbitrary arrest and detention, and debtor’s prisons. It forbids propaganda advocating either war or hatred based on race, religion, national origin or language. That means the junta leadership and their fascist citizens referring to Russians as subhuman, Moskals, chanting “death to Moskals” calling Russians “Colorados” (a beetle whose markings resemble the St. George ribbon) and “Russians on knives” clearly violate all provisions under this UN mandate. Utilizing terrorist methods, the fascist junta erroneously refers to those fighting for their freedom as “terrorists” while they are only defending their own land and their families and friends. THERE IS NO ATO (ANTI TERRORIST OPERATION) ONLY A GENOCIDE AGAINST INNOCENT CIVILIANS.
Convention against Genocide

This convention bans acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. It declares genocide a crime under international law whether committed during war or peacetime, and binds all signators of the convention to to take measures to prevent and punish any acts of genocide committed within their jurisdiction. The act bans killing of members of any racial, ethnic, national or religious group because of their membership in that group, causing serious bodily hard to members of the group, inflicting on members of the group conditions of life intended to destroy them, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group and taking group members’ children away from them and giving them to members of another group.

Those who know no self-restraint, those who think international law is only for the other guy to abide by, those who on a daily basis violate the sovereignty of other countries, should cease and desist from their duplicitous hypocrisy.

From UNPO* http://www.unpo.org/article/4957

The principle of self-determination is prominently embodied in Article I of the Charter of the United Nations. Earlier it was explicitly embraced by US President Woodrow Wilson, by Lenin and others, and became the guiding principle for the reconstruction of Europe following World War I. The principle was incorporated into the 1941 Atlantic Charter and the Dumbarton Oaks proposals which evolved into the United Nations Charter. Its inclusion in the UN Charter marks the universal recognition of the principle as fundamental to the maintenance of friendly relations and peace among states. It is recognized as a right of all peoples in the first article common to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which both entered into force in 1976. 1 Paragraph 1 of this Article provides:

All peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.

The right to self-determination of peoples is recognized in many other international and regional instruments, including the Declaration of Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations and Co-operation Among States adopted b the UN General Assembly in 1970, 2, the Helsinki Final Act adopted by the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE) in 1975, 3, the African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights of 1981, 4, the CSCE Charter of Paris for a New Europe adopted in 1990, 5, and the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action of 1993. 6, It has been affirmed by the International Court of Justice in the Namibia case 7, the Western Sahara case 8, and the East Timor case 9, in which its erga omnes character was confirmed. Furthermore, the scope and content of the right to self-determination has been elaborated upon by the UN Human Rights Committee 10, and the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 11, and numerous leading international jurists.
So to the New World Odor I conclude by saying: back the hell off!!! (You STINK too)

The Day Israel Attacked America

by Stephen Lendman

One ally attacking another willfully is unheard of. Israel violated its special relationship.

What James Petras called "the first (instance) in modern history in which the imperial country cover(ed) up a deliberate major military assault by a supposed ally."

He referred to the 1967 USS Liberty attack. An intelligence-gathering ship. On June 8. In international waters. About 25.5 nautical miles northwest of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

During Israel's Six Day War. Killing 34 crew members. Wounding 171 others. Causing severe vessel damage.

Deployed to monitor belligerents' communications. After Israel's premeditated attack on Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq.

In August 1982, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin admitted Israel had a choice, saying:

"The Egyptian Army concentrations in the Sinai approaches (did) not prove that (President Gamal Abdel) Nasser was really about to attack us."
"We must be honest with ourselves. We decided to attack him."

In February 1968, future Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1974 - 77 and 1992 - 95) told the French newspaper Le Monde:

"I do not believe Nasser wanted war. The two divisions which he sent into Sinai on May 14 would not have been enough to unleash an offensive against Israel. He knew it and we knew it."

In 1978, Israeli Air Force Commander General Mordechai Hod said:

"Sixteen years of planning had gone into those initial eighty minutes. We lived with the plan. We slept on the plan. We ate the plan. Constantly we perfected it."

In April 1972, IDF chief General Haim Barlev said:

"We were not threatened with genocide on the eve of the six-day war, and we had never thought of such a possibility."

Other Israeli leaders and generals voiced similar sentiments. Israel wasn't threatened. It attacked non-threatening Arab states. Willfully. Aggressively. Without just cause. Lawlessly.

Clear naked aggression. Including against America. Getting away with cold-blooded murder. Not for the first or last time.

Then Defense Secretary Robert McNamara lied. Calling it a case of "mistaken identity." Knowing precisely what happened and why.

Retired Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer later called the incident "one of the classic all-American coverups." One of many times Washington disgracefully alibied for Israeli high crimes.

Israel knew Liberty's identity. It flew a clearly visible US flag. Good weather conditions made it easy to spot.

Israeli warplanes circled overhead before attacking. At times low enough for US sailors to wave to Israeli pilots. They waved back.

On June 5, Israel attacked Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. At the time, then IDF Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin told US naval attache Commander Ernest Carl Castle Israeli forces would sink unidentified ships.

He requested US vessels stay away from Israel's coastline. Or at least report their exact position.

US sources said no inquiry was made until after LIberty's attack ended. US Secretary of State Dean Rusk asked Washington's Israeli ambassador, Walworth Barbour, for "urgent confirmation" of Israel's statement.

He responded saying "(n)o request for info on US ships operating off Sinai was made until after Liberty incident."

"Had Israelis made such an inquiry it would have been forwarded immediately to the chief of naval operations and other high naval commands and repeated to" the State Department.

When war began, Liberty commander, Captain William McGonagle, asked US Sixth Fleet Vice Admiral William I. Martin to dispatch  destroyer help.

An armed escort. For Liberty's protection. An auxiliary communications center. Martin replied:

"Liberty is a clearly marked United States ship in international waters, not a participant in the conflict and not a reasonable subject for attack by any nation. Request denied."

At the same time, he promised US warplanes would respond in 10 minutes in case of willful or inadvertent attack.

No response came. Liberty was on its own. Virtually defenseless against Israeli air and sea power.

Throughout the morning of June 8, official testimonies and Liberty's deck log confirmed Israeli warplanes close monitoring.

When attack began, it was following its signal-intercept mission course about 25.5 nautical miles off Sinai's coastline. At about five knots.

Israeli forces were ordered to fire on any unidentified vessels proceeding at over 20 knots. At the time, a speed only warships could attain.

At around 2:00PM local time, two Israeli warplanes arrived at Liberty's location. Formation leader, Captain Iftach Spector, communicated information of its position to nearby Israeli torpedo boats.

He and other Israeli pilots lied. Claiming no distinguishable ship markings or flag. At the same time, chief Israeli air controller Lt. Col Shmuel Kislev authorized IDF warplanes to attack.

Liberty commander Captain McGonagle requested urgent Sixth Fleet help, saying:

"Under attack by unidentified jet aircraft, require immediate assistance." None arrived.

At around 2:35PM, an Israeli torpedo struck Liberty. On its starboard side. Creating a 40-foot-wide hole in its hull.

Killing 25 servicemen. Wounding dozens of others. Marine staff sergeant Bryce Lockwood later said he'd "never deny that God kept Liberty afloat."

Four other Israeli torpedoes missed their target. Its gunships strafed Liberty at close range.

At about 4:00PM, Israel contacted Washington's Tel Aviv embassy. Claiming it mistakenly attacked Liberty.

Crew members somehow kept it afloat. Despite severe damage. Later met by US destroyers USS Davis and Massey as well as cruiser USS Little Rock.

Providing medical help. Escorting Liberty to Malta. For interim repairs. Completed in July. After which Liberty returned to America.

Then decommissioned in June 1968. Struck from Naval Vessel Register listings. Part of Washington's coverup and denial.

Later transferred to the US Maritime Administration (MARAD). In December 1970. Then sold for scrap in 1973.

On June 10, 1967, Secretary of State Dean Rusk told Israel's ambassador:

"At the time of the attack, the USS Liberty was flying the American flag and its identification was clearly indicated in large white letters and numerals on its hull."

"Experience demonstrates that both the flag and the identification number of the vessel were readily visible from the air."

"Accordingly, there is every reason to believe that the USS Liberty was identified, or at least her nationality determined, by Israeli aircraft approximately one hour before the attack."

"The subsequent attack by the torpedo boats, substantially after the vessel was or should have been identified by Israeli military forces, manifests the same reckless disregard for human life."

According to Political Science Professor George Lenczowski:

"It was significant that, in contrast to his secretary of state, President Johnson fully accepted the Israeli version of the tragic incident."

Maintaining strong US/Israeli relations mattered more. So did protecting his own political interests. In case he chose to run for reelection in November 1968.

In later naval court of inquiry testimony, McGonagle said:

During "the latter moments of the air attack, it was noted that three high speed boats were approaching (Liberty) from the northeast on a relative bearing of approximately 135 (degrees) at a distance of about 15 (nautical) miles."

"The ship at the time was still on (westward) course 283 (degrees) true, speed unknown, but believed to be in excess of five knots."

McGonagle "believed that the time of initial sighting of the torpedo boats…was about (2:20PM).

Approaching "boats appeared to be in a wedge type formation with the center boat the lead point of the wedge."

"Estimated speed of the boats was about 27 to 30 knots (50 to 56 km/hour). It "appeared that they were approaching the ship in a torpedo launch attitude."

They flew Israeli flags. Liberty's identity was clear and unmistakable. McGonagle later received Medal of Honor recognition.

Virtually always presented by presidents ceremonially at the White House. This time breaking with tradition. Awarding it in privately. At Washington's Navy Yard. By the Secretary of the Navy.

Other Liberty survivors were decorated. Without mentioning willful Israeli aggression. Terry Halbardier got a Silver Star. For repairing a damaged antenna during intense Israeli strafing.

The US Naval Court of Inquiry claimed no responsibility "to rule on the culpability of the attackers, and no evidence was heard from the attacking nation."

It lied saying "available evidence combines to indicate a case of mistaken identity."

At the same time, it found "heroism displayed by the commanding officer, (as well as) officers and men of the Liberty was exceptional."

A Joint Chief of Staff's report contains evidence relating only to communication system failures. Nothing about clear Israeli culpability.

A June 21, 1967 CIA memorandum said "(t)he attack was not made in malice toward the US and was by mistake…"

"(B)ut the failure of the IDF Headquarters and the attacking aircraft to identify the Liberty and the subsequent attack by torpedo boats were both incongruous and indicative of gross negligence."

A CIA informant said Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan personally ordered Liberty's attack. He wanted it sunk. All crew members killed. A redacted report said in part:

The unnamed source "said that Dayan personally ordered the attack on the ship and that one of his generals adamantly opposed the action and said, ‘This is pure murder.’ One of the admirals who was present also disapproved of the action, and it was he who ordered it stopped and not Dayan."

The report remains classified. According to an insider, "(s)o as not to embarrass Israel." Even 47 years later.

LBJ's Intelligence Advisory Board Chairman Clark Clifford issued a damning report. Containing "all information on the subject." Discussing "the question of Israeli culpability."

Calling what happened an "unprovoked attack." Constituting "a flagrant act of gross negligence for which the Israeli Government should be held completely responsible, and the Israeli military personnel involved should be punished."

He later fell from grace. Adopting the official line. About a tragic Israeli mistake.

Defense Secretary Robert McNamara lied to Congress. Claiming no "evidence of a conscious intent to attack a US vessel."

Two Israeli inquiry reports whitewashed what happened. Claiming Liberty was believed to be an Egyptian vessel. Because of failed US/Israeli communications.

Hours before attacking, IDF naval headquarters knew Liberty was "an electromagnetic audio-surveillance ship of the US Navy."

It lied claiming information was lost. "(N)ever passed along to the ground controllers who directed the air attack nor to the crews of the three Israeli torpedo boats."

Israeli Judge Yerushalmi conducted his own fact-finding inquiry. He claimed no "deviation from the standard of reasonable conduct which would justify committal of anyone for trial."

In other words, naked Israeli aggression was OK. Case closed!

Unresolved questions remain. At the time of the attack. Secretary of State Dean Rusk said he "was never satisfied with the Israeli explanation."

"Their sustained attack to disable and sink Liberty precluded an assault by accident or some trigger-happy local commander," he maintained.

"Through diplomatic channels we refused to accept their explanations. I didn't believe them then, and I don't believe them to this day. The attack was outrageous."

Navy Captain Ward Boston was US Court of Inquiry senior counsel. In 2002, he said C of I's findings reflected coverup and denial.

Israel willfully attacked a clearly identified US ship, he stressed. He called denying it an "insidious attempt to whitewash the facts." He wrote in part, saying:

"The evidence was clear. Both Admiral Kidd and I believed with certainty that this attack, which killed 34 American sailors and injured 172 others, was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew."

"Each evening, after hearing testimony all day, we often spoke our private thoughts concerning what we had seen and heard."

"I recall Admiral Kidd repeatedly referring to the Israeli forces responsible for the attack as 'murderous bastards.' "

"It was our shared belief, based on the documentary evidence and testimony we received first hand, that the Israeli attack was planned and deliberate, and could not possibly have been an accident."

US intelligence agencies expert James Bamford believes Israel attacked Liberty to suppress its high crimes against peace. Including massacring hundreds of Egyptian prisoners.

NSA intercepts showed Israeli pilots clearly knew they attacked a US ship, said Bamford.

Israeli aggression continued for over an hour. Liberty was severely damaged. A smoking hulk. Listing at about 10 degrees.

Lucky to stay afloat. With two-thirds of its crew dead or injured. Two US destroyers took 16 hours to arrive. To provide help.

Coverup and denial began immediately. Survivors were ordered to remain silent about what happened.

Israel seized Syria's Golan Heights one day after attacking Liberty. Had it remained operable, it might have gotten clear evidence of willful Israeli aggression. Countering IDF lies.

Israel's Six Day War bonded Washington and Tel Aviv more closely together. Politically. Economically. Militarily.

Both countries partner in each other's genocidal crimes. Their special relationship reflects pure evil.

Advancing their imperial interests. Threatening world peace. Humanity's greatest menace by far.

New Mass Killing in Iraq: ISIL Murders 85 in Anbar

Local Editor

ISIL MassacreISIL executed 85 more members of the Albu Nimr tribe in Iraq in a mass killing campaign launched last week to break their resistance to ISIL. Over 300 people have been executed since middle of last week.

The shooting happened late Friday in the village of Ras al-Maa, north of the provincial capital of Ramadi, Anbar councilman Faleh al-Issawi said.

Sheikh Naeem al-Ga'oud, one of the Albu Nimr tribe's chiefs, told Reuters that ISIS had killed 50 members of Albu Nimr who were fleeing the al Qaeda offshoot on Friday.

In a separate incident, a security official said 35 bodies were found in a mass grave.

Members of the Albu Nimr tribe had held out for weeks under siege by ISIS fighters in Anbar Province to the west of Baghdad, but finally ran low on ammunition, fuel and food. Hundreds of tribal fighters withdrew and members of the tribe fled their main village Zauiyat albu Nimr.

ISIL rounded up many of them, shot them at close range and dumped them in mass graves. Over 300 people have been executed since the killing began in the middle of last week, Ga'oud and security officials.

ISIL militants executed at least 220 Iraqis in retaliation against a tribe's opposition to their takeover of territory west of Baghdad. Two mass graves were discovered on Thursday containing some of the 300 members of the Sunni Muslim Albu Nimr tribe that ISIL had seized this week.

Security officials and witnesses have confirmed that bodies of more than 200 people were found in mass graves on Tuesday and Wednesday, having been shot at close range.

Militants accused men and women of the Al Bu Nimr tribe of retaliating against them after being displaced from their homes when the group seized the Anbar town of Hit last month, al-Issawi said.

“These killings are taking place almost on a daily basis now in the areas under the control of the ISIL terrorist group and they will continue unless this terrorist group is stopped,” al-Issawi told The Associated Press.

The ‘peeping’ Zionist rabbi

Rehmat

“What was forbidden is now permitted ,” Rabbi Samuel Dresner, Chicago Jewish scholar and author.
“Those that destroy you and those that wreck you go forth from thee,” Jewish Bible Isaiah 49:17.
On October 14, 2014, Rabbi Bernard (Barry) Freundel, 62, chief rabbi at Washington’s Kesher Israel synagogue was arrested at his Georgetown home on six charges of taking photos of nude women while taking their holy Mikveh (a bath in which certain Jewish ritual purifications are performed).
Rabbi Freundel is no ordinary religious leader. He has been spiritual guide to several top pro-Israel warmongering Zionist creeps like former Sen. Joe Lieberman, US Supreme Court expert Linda Greenhouse, secretary of treasury Jacob Lew and Leon Wieseltier, editor New Republic. Read more here.
Interestingly, JTA reported on October 21, that Freundel used photos to blackmail his victims as “slaves” by forcing them to work long-hours of unpaid work at the synagogue.
Freundel lead Kesher Israel synagogue since 1989 until he was suspended after his dark-side was exposed last week. During this period of time, Freundel also taught ‘Jewish Law’ at Georgetown University and ‘Jewish Ethics’ at Towson University.
Stephanie Doucette, 22, one of Freundel’s porn victims’ story was published by the Jewish week on October 28, 2014.
“I grew up celebrating my maternal Jewish heritage – though my mother’s line is Jewish, her family converted to Christianity a few generations back. Then, as an undergraduate, when I found myself becoming more traditional in my observances, I decided to do an Orthodox conversion. I thought I was fortunate to be living in the same city as Rabbi Freundel, who was well known for his conversions. I began converting with Rabbi Freundel over a year and a half ago. I was one of the conversion students who did ‘practice dunks.’ Now I’m waiting to find out if he videotaped me in the Mikvah,” she wrote.
Rabbi Freundel’s obsession with ‘peeping sex’ (thank G-d not with men converts) reminds me an article (October 20, 2013) by Dr. Lasha Darkmoon, entitledSecret Sex Life of the Jews, gave some good reasons that when most westerners talk about prostitutes, they mean Jewish women.
“Because of severe economic hardships endured by Jews in past centuries, many Jewish girls were forced into a life of prostitution. In all the great European cities, a certain type of prostitute was always to be found: exotic and semi-Asiatic in appearance. She was Jewish, and she was very much in demand. The word “Jewess” therefore entered the language as a loose synonym for “Jewish prostitute”. When Charles Baudelaire writes a poem about a Parisian prostitute with whom he had just spent the night, he refers to her simply as a “Jewess”. That was enough to identify her as a prostitute. When John Keats refers to Jewish prostitutes in an unpublished poetic fragment quoted in a private letter (1819), he doesn’t call them “prostitutes”. He just calls them “Jewesses”. Why? Because so many Jewesses were prostitutes that the two terms had virtually become interchangeable,” she wrote.

Egypt: Karam al-Qawadis brings emergency law back to the forefront

Egyptian soldiers watch during a military operation in the Egyptian city of Rafah, near the border with the southern Gaza Strip on October 30, 2014, as Egypt began setting up a buffer zone along the border with the Hamas-run territory to prevent militant infiltration and arms smuggling following a wave of deadly attacks. Egypt is witnessing a harsh political winter, a compulsory hibernation of the already deteriorating democratization process. In the restive Sinai, [the army has created] a buffer zone that has displaced civilians. The media clamps down on free speech and distorts the opposition while the press surrendered everything and has militarized in order to bolster the state. A different kind of Egypt has emerged after the Karam al-Qawadis massacre in Sinai.
Cairo – Seizing what happened in Karam al-Qawadis, Egyptian authorities set in motion a rapid process of militarization. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a presidential decree allowing civilians to be tried in military courts. The first article of the law stipulates “deploying the army in the streets and around public and vital institutions, including power plants, networks, electricity towers, gas pipelines, oil fields, railways, road and bridge networks and other state infrastructure, facilities and public property. These facilities will be treated as military assets throughout the period of protection.”
The second article stipulates: “Anyone who attacks these facilities will be tried by military tribunals and the public prosecution is to refer cases having to do with these crimes to the relevant military prosecution.”

Based on what we understand so far, participants in all political protests, including factional protests, will be subject to military courts. Not to mention the cases concerning members of the Muslim Brotherhood that are being heard in ordinary Egyptian courts. This decision was welcomed by the media and political parties. Loyalists and some nominal opposition political parties launched the National Front to Fight Terrorism which invokes the figures of the National Salvation Front that led the June 30 uprising against the Muslim Brotherhood. There is ongoing talk about how this Front is going to provide political support to the state. Al-Akhbarfound out from inside the Front that there is talk of postponing the parliamentary elections, which is the last step in the roadmap to democracy.
Human rights activists have expressed grave concern about these events regardless of political affiliations. Presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef said: “The decree aims to secure the home front against terrorism and it was issued after the approval of the National Defense Council and the government based on what the State Council saw fit.”
This political maelstrom is approaching Egyptian universities where the state has failed, so far, in quelling student protests. Informed sources said: “Based on the aforementioned decision, the army might intervene along with the police to confront anti-government student protests.” Sources say that the issue is still being debated by the security leadership in the interior and defense ministries, especially as private security firm Falcon needs more time before its performance can be evaluated. “It is successful in some places but has failed in others,” the source said, emphasizing that “students who will be arrested during protests will be transferred to military courts right away.”
Many human rights organizations are about to shut down just before the November 10 deadline, which the Ministry of Social Solidarity refused to renew. This closure has to do not only with the new legal conditions but, according to the director of the Arab House Foundation for Human Rights Magdi Abdel Fattah, “has also to do with the political and military climate in which it is difficult to defend the idea of human rights in times of confronting terrorism. Human rights lawyers will also suffer immensely because military trials nullify the conditions of a fair trial.”
Another human rights figure is Hafez Abu Saada, director of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights and member of the National Council for Human Rights. Echoing British Prime Minister David Cameron, he said: “Don’t talk to me about human rights in confronting terrorism. We have to declare a relentless war against extremists. Human rights organizations should play a role in organizing ideas against terrorism.”
The media landscape in Egypt is shrinking more and more. Businessmen who own satellite channels agreed to an editorial policy that “supports steps taken by the state to fight terrorism,” while newspaper editors decided to stifle freedom of the press. Militarization has become an acceptable phenomenon after the Karam al-Qawadis incident.
After Egyptian newspaper editors met with the Wafd Party three days ago, they issued a joint statement, which was a source of concern for local and international observers. The statement read: “Newspapers are going to stop publishing reports that support terrorism and call for undermining state institutions directly or indirectly, deal objectively and not magnify news of subversive protests by the Muslim Brotherhood in and outside universities, develop a mechanism for joint coordination between all newspapers to confront terrorist plots, take measures to confront these plots which would prevent the infiltration of terrorist supporters into the press and confront a culture that is opposed to our fundamental national principles.”
Khaled al-Bashi, a member of the board of directors of Egypt's Press Syndicate, argued that this step amounts to “nationalizing press freedom but by the journalists themselves.” This view coincides with an angry statement issued by the organization Journalists against the Protest Law, declaring: “The statement by editors amounts to a voluntary nationalization of the press and a taming of the Fourth Estate. The statement hands press freedom over to the ruling authorities under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Although everyone knows that an effective implementation of the press code of ethics is enough to stop any violation of the rules and ethics of the profession or any incitement to violence. Unfortunately the objective is to undermine freedom of the press.”
It appears that the situation in Sinai is becoming more tense, especially along the border with Gaza (13 kilometers/ 8 miles). Political analyst Karam Said foresees more than one scenario. The most likely scenario is that the army will establish a buffer zone along the border with Gaza and will resettle uprooted families living in Rafah near the Gaza border. “If this scenario fails, the state will dig a 10 kilometer (6 mile) waterway that would make the subsoil soft and thus hard to build tunnels. Besides, the steel wall that Egypt began building in 2009 along the border with Gaza to protect national security might be completed.”
Said believes that announcing a state of emergency in the entire country is a possibility, especially that the war on terror is open. However, he says: “If Egyptian security measures fail to control the border with Gaza or failure to lay siege to hardline organizations and their sleeper cells in Sinai, dangers besetting the Egyptian interior will escalate.”
