As reported two weeks ago, following a stunning announcement by the head of Ukraine's central bank, Valeriya Gontareva, on primetime TV we learned that (virtually) all of Ukraine's gold was gone, or — in the parlance of Jon Corzine — had "vaporized."

And as we also predicted two weeks ago, it was only a matter of time before Ukraine's people — the vast majority of whom are innocent pawns in a vast game of realpolitik between the west and east — finally got angry and demanded some answers, if not heads.

That time came earlier today when as Interfax.ua reported:

"A Kyiv-based court has instructed Kyiv prosecutors to bring an action against National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Governor Valeriya Gontareva on charges of abuse of power or misuse of office to obtain illegal profit, the Vesti newspaper reported on Tuesday." 

"This decision was taken by Kyiv's Pechersk district court on December 1 after it had examined case No. 757/33660/14. It ordered the Kyiv prosecutor's office to launch an investigation and include it in the register of pre-trial investigations.".

Gontareva is charged with abuse of power or misuse of office under Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The plaintiff is lawyer Rostyslav Kravets, the newspaper said.

He confirmed this information in his post on Facebook, saying that the decision was taken by the court at the third attempt, and in November 2014, the prosecutors declined to bring an action to meet his claim.

The charges against the chief banker involve foreign currency interventions by the Central Bank in August 2014: On August 5 the NBU bought U.S. dollars on the interbank forex market for UAH 11.93 per U.S. dollar and sold them for UAH 12.26 per U.S. dollar.

During the same week, on August 8, it traded in foreign currency at a higher rate: UAH 12.45-12.6 per U.S. dollar. First it sold $69 million on the interbank forex market at a lower rate, and some days later it bought $35 million at a more favorable price.

As a result of these transactions, the NBU lost 19 kopecks per U.S. dollar, Kravets said.

Kravets claims that by acting so, Gontareva "has intentionally committed an extremely unfavorable transaction for the gold and forex reserves of Ukraine, despite the fact that under Ukraine's Constitution it is the Central Bank that is in charge of maintaining the country's gold reserves."

That, and of course, there is also that as a result of central bank "transactions" the Ukraine central bank is now essentially gold-free, which per Gontareva's recent appearance, has just 1% of total reserves in the form of the yellow metal.

And while it remains to be seen if this will be the spark that lights the counter-revolution (after all it took Egypt not less than a year to turn against the puppet regime dumped upon it by the CIA and the US State Department) others are already sensing which way the wind is blowing.

As Bloomberg reported moments ago, another central banker, Olena Shcherbakova who is head of the monetary policy department at the Ukrainian central bank, said she is resigning.

When reaced by phone she stated that she "has the right to step down," without giving reason for decision.

She sure does, although we doubt even a former Goldman Sachs partner would be willing to replace her, as the realization among the Ukraine people finally seeps through that they were thoroughly betrayed by the same people who promised they would fix the country following the February presidential coup.

In it, they laid out what changes would need to be made within the U.S. government in the wake of “catastrophic terrorism,” which is also the title of the article. The ”Catastrophic Terrorism”article begins with the strange subtitle ‘Imagining the Transforming Event’, and advocates a transformation of the U.S. government and the way Americans live.

Egypt: How did the ‘trial of the century’ set Mubarak free?

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could have stood trial before a "revolutionary” tribunal during the two months when the constitution was suspended under the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces (SCAF). However, he was protected by the former public prosecutor through legal maneuvering, and the judiciary proceeded with exploiting legal loopholes to set him free.

Cairo – The period between the issuance of the decision by former Egyptian public prosecutor Abdel-Majid Mahmoud to imprison deposed President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons in 2011, and the decision to acquit them along with Mubarak's interior minister and other security officials was not very long. Three years do not count for much compared to Mubarak's 30-year rule. His period of incarceration became like some sort of absolution, compelling the anchor on Sada al-Balad TV station to address him as "Mr. President" in his first audio interview after the "not guilty” verdict [was issued].

Through the decision to jail Mubarak, former public prosecutor Mahmoud seems to have preserved his position for over 15 months, amid calls by the revolutionary youths for his dismissal on the ground that he is a symbol of the former regime. The verdict issued on Saturday has shown that Mubarak's time in jail was a sort of protection provided by Mahmoud.

Although the public prosecutor enjoys legal immunity and cannot be removed, the period that followed Mubarak’s resignation and the transfer of power to SCAF under Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi witnessed a suspension of the constitution (during which it was possible to form revolutionary tribunals). The parliament was also dissolved, which is a period that lasted nearly two-months until the introduction of amendments to the constitution after the March 19 [2011] referendum.

With the ratification of the constitutional amendments, the time period which could have allowed the removal of Mubarak's men in the judiciary through revolutionary trials – as demanded by the demonstrators at Tahrir Square – ended. Somehow, Mubarak turned from someone who is accused of political corruption and responsibility (at least politically) for the crimes committed during his rule to a suspect in a handful of cases, in which he was successively acquitted.

What the Egyptians did not know back then was that the public prosecutor, who was appointed by Mubarak and supervised the investigations with him, is the one who declared him not guilty.

The exploitation of shortcomings in laws and regulations began to clear the way for Mubarak’s acquittal. The prosecution that investigated the killing of the protesters did not include Mubarak as a suspect, until it yielded to popular pressure and referred him to a “criminal” court based on a charge for which he was seen as guilty in advance. At the time, this procedure could only be understood by legal experts.

It is well known that litigation procedures in the Egyptian criminal courts pass through three stages. The first stage begins at the Criminal Court, after which the case is referred to another criminal department if the Court of Cassation accepts the appeal. At the last stage, the Court of Cassation looks into the case and delivers a final verdict. In Mubarak's case, the prosecution will have to appeal the “not guilty” verdicts at the Court of Cassation, which may accept the appeal and reopen the trial, or accept the verdict as final. In any case, the Court of Cassation has thousands of cases to look into, which means it could take months or years to set a trial date for and adjudicate.

Judicial sources indicated to Al-Akhbar that Mubarak's trial cost the state treasury more than $15 million, which covered Mubarak’s stay at Tora Prison Hospital, Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, the International Medical Center, and al-Maadi Hospital. They are all military establishments where the former president received special treatment in terms of visitation rights and phone use contrary to Egyptian prison regulations. This also happened during deposed President Mohammed Mursi's term.

Judicial sources told Al-Akhbar that Mubarak has about two more months in prison, before he is released, since his time spent in jail (3.5 years) will be deducted from the three-year prison sentence issued by the court in the presidential palaces case. The nine months during which he was released will be excluded from his time served. The sources gave two possible scenarios for Mubarak’s remaining in jail after the end of his sentence period. "He would be kept under house arrest in the event of the declaration of a state of emergency in accordance with the law, or jailed in connection with other cases. But both options are entirely unlikely," the sources revealed.

In the same context, former head of the criminal court, Counselor Rifaat al-Sayyed, said that the court has not yet exonerated Mubarak in the bribery case involving businessman Hussein Salem. "However, it decided that the criminal case has expired under the statute of limitations, which compelled the court president to address the legislature to amend the law to avoid the the dismissal of the bribery case due to the expiration of the statute of limitations," he explained. According to Sayyed, the judge's decision based on the lack of probable cause to file a lawsuit against Mubarak is "due to a procedural mistake by the public prosecution, when it did not include his name in the list of suspects the first time it was issued."

However, the surprise was in the court’s verdict regarding the lack of "probable cause to file a lawsuit against Mubarak regarding the killing of demonstrators." This is the same item used by Mursi's lawyer in charges related to incitement to the murder of protesters outside al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace during the demonstrations against the constitutional declaration held at the end of 2012. The prosecutor declared the lack of probable cause to file a lawsuit, but later used the incident as one of the major cases against Mursi. On Sunday, the Cairo Criminal Court decided to resume the proceedings in the prison break case that took place after the January 25 Revolution, which involves Mursi and 130 other suspects.

As for Mubarak's sons, apart from the cases related to manipulation in the Egyptian Stock Exchange, there are no longer any cases for them to be tried for. This paves the way for their release within a few months, after they finish their sentence related to the presidential palace case, which will be considered by the Court of Cassation next January following an appeal by the two men's lawyer, Farid al-Dib.

Kiev Delivering on Rhetoric to ‘Cleanse Sub-Humans’

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the US-installed prime minister of the fascist junta that overthrew the elected Ukrainian government in February, is delivering on his recently declared Nazi campaign of extermination.

Last week, the former investment banker, unveiled an altogether different portfolio when he promised that military forces under the control of the Kiev junta would «cleanse sub-humans» from the country’s restive eastern regions. Using Final Solution rhetoric of his Nazi heroes, Yatsenyuk was referring to the ethnic Russian populations of the southeastern regions of Ukraine, who are refusing to acknowledge the US-backed coup in Kiev as legitimate.

Days after Yatsenyuk’s extermination program was published on the Ukrainian embassy website in the US (it has since been redacted), the newly elected puppet president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, unveiled a «unilateral ceasefire». Poroshenko’s «peace plan» has been lauded by his backers in Washington and NATO as a genuine initiative to end nearly two months of violence.

However, within hours of the Kiev regime’s unilateral ceasefire being announced the violence committed by its military forces has intensified. Russian President Vladimir Putin this weekend urged the Kiev junta to halt the military operations and to engage in the national dialogue with the separatist self-declared People’s Republics of Donetz and Lugansk.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on a visit to Saudi Arabia at the weekend, voiced Moscow’s alarm over the escalating violence in Ukraine’s south and east. That violence has included the shelling of border posts inside Russian territory.

What the Western-backed Kiev regime is engaging is nothing near a ceasefire or a truce in hostilities. Stripped of cynical rhetoric avowing peace, amnesty and dialogue, the actions of the Kiev forces speak of Nazi-like «cleansing» of civilian populations.

Here are just some of the «ceasefire» actions in the hours following Poroshenko’s declared truce that supposedly came into effect last Friday at 2300 hours local time. In the early hours of Saturday morning, churches in Slavyansk, Donetz, came under artillery fire, according to Viktor Borodai, the locally elected prime minister of the Donetz People’s Republic.

Elsewhere in Slavyansk district, incendiary bombs were dropped by warplanes on the village of Semyonovka. The use of internationally banned White Phosphorous firebombs has been previously reported in Slavyansk.

In Lugansk region, the village of Ananyevka has been subjected «to continuous shelling» from members of Kiev’s National Guard, a spokesman for the Lugansk People’s Republic told Russian news agency Itar-Tass. The so-called National Guard is comprised of paramilitaries formed by the neo-Nazi Pravy Sector, the group that supplied the shock troops instrumental in carrying out the CIA-backed coup in Kiev against the then elected President Viktor Yanukovych on February 23.

Some 18,000 civilians are continuing to flee the ongoing violence in the Donetz and Lugansk regions to seek refuge across the border in Russia, said Anatoly Kuznetzov, deputy director of Russia’s Migration Service. He was speaking two days after Kiev’s so-called unilateral ceasefire officially came into effect. «The refugee crisis is snowballing,» added Kuznetzov.

Apart from the indiscriminate violence meted out by Kiev’s forces, which has seen women and children being slaughtered in their own homes from mortar and artillery fire, the mass exodus of civilians is also due to the severe shortages in food, water and electricity that are impacting communities.

This deprivation of basic utilities seems to be a result of deliberate military targeting of power and pumping stations.

«The Donetsk People’s Republic is on the verge of a humanitarian disaster,» said Alexander Borodai.

The locally elected leader said that Kiev artillery had destroyed most of the pumping stations, which was leaving households across the region without any drinking water.

«The pumping stations are destroyed. We asked for a ceasefire in order to repair them, but the shooting went on, and two repair workers were killed and another two wounded as a result,» said Borodai.

He added: «We thought of drilling wells in Donetsk, but the subsoil waters are undrinkable, and that means that soon there will be a tremendous flow of refugees to the Russian Federation as there will be no supply of drinking water».

Nearly 400 people in Ukraine’s southeastern regions have already died since the US-installed junta in Kiev launched its so-called anti-terror operations at the end of April. Most of the victims – over 70 per cent – have been civilians, according to UN figures. That «anti-terror» campaign was preceded only days before it began by a secret visit to Kiev by CIA director John Brennan, who met the top leadership of the regime, including Yatsenyuk.

The indiscriminate use of violence by military forces is a war crime. So too is the deliberate targeting of basic human needs of food, water and electricity. That the NATO-backed regime in Kiev is engaging in such criminality should be of no surprise. After all, NATO forces perfected the same criminal practices in their subjugation of former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which is probing human rights violations in Ukraine, has put two senior figures associated with the Kiev regime on an international wanted list. Self-styled interior minister Arsen Avakov and the appointed governor of Dnepropetrovsk, Oleg Kolomoisky, are accused of multiple crimes against humanity, according to evidence gathered from thousands of eyewitnesses by the Russian committee.

To that list, should be added the names of Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Petro Poroshenko and the heads of Kiev’s military planning, Andriy Parubiy and Dmitry Yarosh, both of whom are also leaders of the Right Sector paramilitaries.

All of them are responsible for a «ceasefire» that is but a cynical Orwellian cover name for mass murder and, indeed, genocide. If there is any doubt about that intent, just check Yatsenyuk’s owned declared aims of «cleansing sub-humans» iterated last week.

The timing of the Kiev regime’s latest terror campaign is not insignificant either. This weekend, Russians commemorated the deaths of 25-30 million of their compatriots who lost their lives to the Nazi German war of extermination against Untermensch (sub-humans) launched on Soviet Russia on June 21, 1941. The guns behind that historic vile campaign were defeated 69 years ago. But abominably, the mentality behind it still persists today. Ask Yatsenyuk and his US-backed regime.

Still claim israel is a democracy? Israeli Military Court Imprisons Activist for Participating in Peaceful Demonstrations

Israeli forces arrested activist Murad Shtaiwi on April 29, 2014 in the middle of the night accusing him of participating in and arranging Kofur Qadum demonstrations. Salem military court sentenced Shtaiwi from Kofur Qadum village for nine and a half months imprisonment, and a 10 thousands Shekels fine. The military court unjust decision states:

1- nine months and a half of actual jail time

2- 10 thousand shekels nonrefundable fine.

3- A 5-year probation period after he has done his time where he cannot participate in any Kofur Qadum peaceful demonstration or he will face a sentence no less than 12 months in jail.

4- A 3 year probation period after he has done his time where he cannot participate in ANY peaceful demonstration Against Israel anywhere else otherwise he will do no less than 6 months in jail

Shtaiwi is imprisoned in Majedo Military Prison since his arrest in April and has many health problems. His lawyer Adv. Adel Samara stated that Murad has lost over 9 kilos in weight due to harsh and unsuitable holding cells.

In a letter from Murad Shtaiwi sent to the whole world to highlight his situation, he stated the following:

"The accusations that I am charged for are unfair because it is our legal right to protest and participate in demonstrations against the occupation and to struggle for our Self-determination as Palestinians". He added that the peaceful marches in Kofur Qadum will continue even if the occupation suppresses them over and over again.

Since the arrest of Murad, the Israeli army raised its level of brutality in dealing with Kofur Qadum peaceful demonstrations. 15 protestors were shot by live bullets, last week alone recorded two live bullet injuries, a local and an Italian supporter shot in cold blood just for participating in those peaceful demonstrations.

Murad Shtaiwi calls on the International Community and the United Nations to support Kofur Qadum, to open the only street closed for years by Israeli forces, to support the fair quest of a free Palestine and to end the occupation and its settlers. "They fine us so they can pay for more guns and arsenals to kill us with" Murad added. Finally, Murad calls on the people of Kofur Qadum to keep on struggling against occupation and never give up.

When the Anglo-American powers are intent on the destruction of a target country – whether it is Iraq, Libya, Syria, or some other unfortunate nation that finds itself in the crosshairs of NATO – there is very little that will stand in the way of their goals. Such is the case with the possible “No-Fly Zone” being discussed in the public view both by Washington and Ankara.

Coming on the heels of what appeared to be a stall in the plans to implement a “No-Fly Zone” in Syria by the United States, a recent shake-up in the U.S. government resulting in the firing of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel (one of the few officials who expressed at least some level of reservation to military intervention against Assad’s forces), NATO is back at it again.

That the United States and Turkey have suddenly reached an agreement as to the use of Turkey’s air base and the imposition of a ‘No-Fly Zone’ in Syria should come as no surprise. A “No-Fly Zone” or “Buffer Zone” has been the desire of NATO since the Western-initiated crisis began in 2010 as an effort to provide a deeper staging ground for terrorists and death squads operating inside Syria and in order to more easily overcome Assad’s forces. In addition, the implementation of the “No-Fly Zone” would essentially be a declaration of war against Assad’s military which would result in the bombing of Syrian Air Bases and other military installations. This military intervention would also greatly weaken the Syrian military and provide a much needed second wind for Western-backed terrorists both militarily and in terms of morale.

In other words, the implementation of a “No-Fly Zone” would be nothing more than the creation of Libya 2.0.

 Yet the creation of a “No-Fly Zone” is exactly what the United States and Turkey are preparing. As Adam Entous of the Wall Street Journal wrote,

U.S. and Turkish officials have narrowed their differences over a joint military mission in Syria that would give the U.S. and its coalition partners permission to use Turkish air bases to launch strike operations against Islamic State targets across northern Syria, according to officials in both countries.

As part of the deal, U.S. and Turkish officials are discussing the creation of a protected zone along a portion of the Syrian border that would be off-limits to Assad regime aircraft and would provide sanctuary to Western-backed opposition forces and refugees.

U.S. and coalition aircraft would use Incirlik and other Turkish air bases to patrol the zone, ensuring that rebels crossing the border from Turkey don’t come under attack there, officials said.

Turkey had proposed a far more extensive no-fly zone across one-third of northern Syria, according to officials. That idea was, however, a nonstarter for the Obama administration, which told Ankara that something so invasive would constitute an act of war against the Assad regime.

Notably, only a few months ago when Turkey and the United States were discussing the possibility of the establishment of a “No-Fly Zone” over Syria, the term used was “Safe Zone.” In December, the new term for the “No-Fly Zone” is being referred to as an “Air-Exclusion Zone.” It seems these synonyms and semantic name changes will never end.
As Bloomberg notes,

The new proposal would be called an “air-exclusion zone,” a buffer area inside Syria along the Turkish border that would be manned by Turkish troops and protected by U.S. air power, according to three senior U.S. officials who have been briefed on the discussions. The goal would be to give some Syria rebels and civilians protection from both Islamic State and the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Syria through the zone. The idea was last floated in 2012 by the French government, and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was reported to support it at that time.

Of course, the “air-exclusion zone” has nothing to do with providing humanitarian aid. Nor does it have to do with protecting civilians from the Islamic State or Bashar al-Assad, the latter of which is not targeting civilians to begin with. Quite simply, with the establishment of this “buffer zone,” a new staging ground will be opened that allows terrorists such as ISIS and other related terrorist organizations the ability to conduct attacks even deeper inside Syria. 

Working together with its NATO/GCC allies as well as the ever-present provocateur Israel, the United States intends to create a buffer zone in the North and East of Syria while continuing to facilitate the opening of a "third front" on the Syrian border with Israel. 

Such a strategy was discussed in 2012 by the Brookings Institution in its publication "Assessing Options For Regime Change," where it stated

An alternative is for diplomatic efforts to focus first on how to end the violence and how to gain humanitarian access, as is being done under Annan’s leadership. This may lead to the creation of safe-havens and humanitarian corridors, which would have to be backed by limited military power. This would, of course, fall short of U.S. goals for Syria and could preserve Asad in power. From that starting point, however, it is possible that a broad coalition with the appropriate international mandate could add further coercive action to its efforts.

In addition, Israel’s intelligence services have a strong knowledge of Syria, as well as assets within the Syrian regime that could be used to subvert the regime’s power base and press for Asad’s removal. Israel could posture forces on or near the Golan Heights and, in so doing, might divert regime forces from suppressing the opposition. This posture may conjure fears in the Asad regime of a multi-front war, particularly if Turkey is willing to do the same on its border and if the Syrian opposition is being fed a steady diet of arms and training. Such a mobilization could perhaps persuade Syria’s military leadership to oust Asad in order to preserve itself. Advocates argue this additional pressure could tip the balance against Asad inside Syria, if other forces were aligned properly.

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that the U.S. airstrikes and its attempts to create a “buffer zone” inside Syria are nothing more than a farce. The death squads running amok in Syria are themselves entirely creatures of NATO and they remain under NATO’s command. The true enemy of ISIS, Khorasan, and the cannibals of the Levant has always been and continues to be Bashar al-Assad. 

Notably, the plan is being coordinated by Obama’s ISIS Czar, disgraced General John Allen, who was allegedly fired for “thousands of ‘inappropriate communications’” with Florida socialite Jill Kelley, who was also tied to the Petraeus affair. 

Some reputable researchers have suggested that Allen’s original ousting had more to do with infighting amongst members of the American ruling elite involving rabidly pro-war factions (i.e. Petraeus, Ham, Allen, etc.) versus more restrained (but by no means moral) members of the elite (Obama, Hagel, Dempsey etc.) than with allegations of impropriety and inappropriate communications.

Regardless, all of the relevant members of the ruling elite are now completely on board with the plan to launch a military assault on Syria if it were ever in question at all. Even the speed in which the assault should come seems no longer in question. Allen, formerly disgraced and removed from his position is back as ISIS Czar and, thus, so is the Petraeus connection. Hagel is gone. Dempsey has been “converted” from whatever hesitation he may have expressed early on. The boys are back in town and they are ready for war. 

Make no mistake, while the plans to implement a no-fly zone may have lost some steam temporarily, NATO has not given up on its goal of turning Syria into Libya on much the same roadmap. Any palatable excuse will do and, in the absence of a proper excuse, the apathy of the general public will suffice. 

Unfortunately, American apathy is at record highs while NATO and Western media are hard at work providing a number of excuses for the perceived necessity of American military invasion – from the terrorists that NATO itself created, directed, funded, armed, and control to the ever present ludicrous and bizarre fantasies that Assad is the next Hitler, replete with dubious and deceitful connections to actual members of Hitler’s military officers in his cabinet. 

The NATO war machine is beating its drums even louder. 

For those of us who wish to avoid another military confrontation and an even greater destruction of the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in Syria, time is growing short.
