Saudi Arabia’s Appalling Human Rights Record

Posted on July 3, 2015 by

By Belén Fernández

Saudi Arabia’s status as an oil-fueled U.S. ally is a major reason why the dire human rights situation in the country is of little concern to Washington.

Two decades ago, a Palestinian relative of a friend of mine attended an execution in a public square in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As it turned out, the executed man was not the only casualty of the day; my friend’s relative, already in poor health, suffered a fatal heart attack upon witnessing the event. Most members of the international community are of course spared the potentially adverse side effects of contact with Saudi reality, for a variety of reasons.

For starters, the kingdom’s oil-fueled status as U.S. ally extraordinaire means that the general absence of human rights in the country is less of a superpower obsession than it would be were the Saudis to declare themselves, say, a Bolivarian republic. As the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman put it in 2007: “Of course, we must protect the Saudis”—which was four years after he confessed that, “[f]rankly, I have a soft spot for the de facto Saudi ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah, who is a man of decency and moderation.”

The June publication by WikiLeaks of a deluge of cables from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs meanwhile also helps to explain the subdued global reaction to a country that behaves quite similarly to the Islamic State group. The accompanying press release begins by noting that, as of June, the Kingdom had already carried out 100 beheadings this year: “The story was nowhere to be seen on Arab media despite the story’s circulation on wire services. Even international media was relatively mute about this milestone compared to what it might have been if it had concerned a different country. How does a story like this go unnoticed?”

Short answer: money. Why bother cleaning up your act when you can simply clean up your image by disbursing gargantuan sums to international media outlets and other opinion-shaping entities?

As is revealed in the cables, recent Saudi gifts to the media have ranged from meager donations of $2,000 per year to the Guinean News Agency to millions of dollars for the Lebanese television station MTV. Other co-opting tactics have included the mass purchase of subscriptions to publications that are then indebted to their Saudi subscribers.

According to WikiLeaks, the documents “form an indictment of both the Kingdom and the state of the media globally.” They also serve to showcase the impressive hypocrisy of which human beings are capable. In his coverage of the cables, Lebanese blogger Joey Ayoub comments on the revelation that right-wing Lebanese political leader Samir Geagea sought his own personal financial bailout from Saudi Arabia:

“Funny how one of the most popular leaders of the Lebanese Christian Right is so keen on forging an alliance with one of the most brutally anti-Christian governments in the world (here’s a leak related to Saudi Arabia forbidding Ethiopian Christians from praying at home).” As for other Saudi alliances, the Wall Street Journal ran the following headline on June 28: “Saudi Officials Linked to Jihadist Group in WikiLeaks Cables.” Although claiming the documents couldn’t be independently verified, the article notes that they indicate “high-level contacts” between Saudi Arabia and “America’s most deadly adversary in Afghanistan”—the Haqqani network.

But in what might also be referred to as an example of high-level contact, the piece goes on to specify that said network “traces its origins to the 1980s, when the U.S. and Saudi Arabia backed Afghan mujahideen factions fighting the Soviets.” Indeed, America’s established tradition of creating its own enemies in Afghanistan means the Saudis can hardly be singled out for rebuke. And while the anti-Soviet campaign helped make the world safe for capitalism, the current proliferation of enemies across the Middle Eastern landscape also conveniently offers plenty of opportunities for profit; for one thing, the Saudis’ freneticmilitarization has spelled happiness for the U.S. arms industry.

Shortly before the release of the Saudi cables, Bloomberg View columnist Eli Lake reported on another, non-WikiLeaks-based revelation that should have been obvious to anyone not engaged in willful self-delusion: that Saudi Arabia was in cahoots with none other than the state of Israel over their “common foe,” Iran. Describing the joint Saudi-Israeli fear that U.S. President Barack Obama’s alleged “efforts to make peace with Iran will embolden that regime’s aggression against them,” Lake speculates that “it may end up that [the president’s] greatest diplomatic accomplishment will be that his outreach to Iran helped create the conditions for a Saudi-Israeli alliance against it.”

Never mind that an alliance between two spectacularly oppressive regimes backed by the world’s foremost imperial aggressor is not exactly something to celebrate. Meanwhile, the Saudi Ministry of Civil Service recently advertised eight positions for public executioners, which seems to suggest that oppression isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

But if there’s anything to say in the Kingdom’s defense, the death of justice is far from a Saudi crime alone.

ZABADAANI LIBERATED COMPLETELY! ALQAEDA RATS TRY RUSHING TO ZIONIST BOMB SHELTERS

fgdfgdf

DAMASCUS:

I have just received an ecstatically jubilant memo from Monzer’s wife in Damascus: the MoD is about to announce the complete eradication of all rats from the summer resort town of Al-Zabadaani.

The assault, as many know, started on Friday night and continued into Saturday morning, Damascus time.  The assault was carried out by mostly Syrian Army infantry and Hizbullah commandos.
The city was, for the most part, already liberated except for areas where stubborn, non-local resistance continued its reign of terror.

The military surrounded the area completely beginning in the sister resort city of Bloodaan and capping the process off by occluding the former supply routes through the western mountains.  Initial reports, based on intercepted communications between Zionist rodents in northern Occupied Palestine and rat leaders inside the town, prove the Zionist imbeciles knew the game was over and suggested the rodents try to escape.  That, naturally, was not an option.

They were speaking, by the way, in English and Arabic, although most of the Arabic was described as “broken” indicating the rodents had been in Syria long enough to pick up some kitchen Arabic.
TAKE IT TO THE BANK.  THE TOWN OF ZABADAANI IS NOW COMPLETELY UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE LEGITIMATE SYRIAN AUTHORITIES LED BY DR. BASHAR AL-ASSAD.
From Al-Qusayr, to Dayr El-Zor, to Al-Hasaka, to Tal Kalakh, to Der’ah, to Qalamoon, to Latakia — the Syrian Army is establishing a concatenation of victories which cannot be denied and which will lead this year to the liberation of the lands of Syria and the defeat of the Jordanteezian-Zionist-British-Saudi-Qatari- supported vermin.

Syrian Army, Hezbollah Launches Wide-scale Offensive in Zabadani

Syrian army and Hezbollah resistance fighters launched a wide-scale offensive on Saturday on several fronts in the southern Qalamoun city of Zabadani, where militants are holed up, amid artillery and aerial cover.

Syrian armyThe forces blocked the main road north of Zabadani to isolate the area from the Qalamoun towns of Serghaya and Ain Hor, Al-Manar correspondent reported.

The operation came after all efforts of reconciliation resulted in failure and after hundreds of militants fleeing from some Al-Qalamoun barrens infilitrated to the city.

Al-Manar correspondent said ground forces pushed into Zabadani around dawn, accompanied by intense air raids and shelling. "They took control over a neighboring position identified as Qalaat al-Tal or Qalaat al-Koko, located west of Zabadani," he added.

Syria’s state-run news agency SANA Saturday also reported the “wide military operation” in Zabadani, saying "the allied forces are pushing toward their targets on several fronts," noting that the offensive had inflicted heavy casualties on the rebels.

Should They Pray?

 Dr. Mohammad Abdo Al-Ibrahim

The ongoing on the ground in Syria is a concentrated operation by the leaders of terrorism and its backers as to slaughter the more of Syrians, and spoil the more of its sacred soil. The sponsors of terrorism gave the orders for their cattle on the ground, but in vain.
This is Syria, where the Leadership, Army and people are but one. The terrorists were crushed in the southern part of Syria: southern front. Yes, Syria and all of Syria consists of fronts of defense against terrorism. Further, the terrorists and their masters, financers, backers, with their MOC's were crushed too in central, northern, and Eastern Syria.
The victories achieve by Syrians, not to forget the brothers and friends too, against terrorism are indeed heroic. From all the world, the terrorists are brought armed to teeth by the ewes and their masters  to Syria. The fool who sponsor such a frenzy barbaric war of terrorism against Syria aim at the destruction of the most rich civilization and most wise and democratically-elected and beloved leadership.
The Syrian message to the world is clear as ever: in Syria every true Syria is an Army member when comes to the defense of civilization and light against terrorism and brutality; in Syria, ever true Syrian has dedication, loyalty and passion for  the President, who is even by now more immune and stronger by his citizens.
He is the President, according not only to a Syrian citizen, but to Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Yevgeny Lukyanov,   for whom, "The states of this region, like Saudi Arabia, Gulf countries, and perhaps some others, should pray for Bashar al-Assad. This is the last security line for them."
Hopefully, better now is the birth of a new real alliance against terrorism,  than wasting all petrodollars for the destruction of the cradle of civilization. Is it still possible for a real alliance against the caner of terrorism; such an alliance, if real, would be in the interest of all humanity, the very humanity which Syria has been, under the leadership of its hero President, and with the help of the brothers and friends, fighting for and defending from cannibals, extremists and terrorists.

Hot Off The Press: How The Israeli Government Subverted The Solidarity Movement

July 04, 2015  /  Gilad Atzmon

By Gilad Atzmon

Two days ago, some invaluable information surfaced relating to the treacherous role of Jewish liberals in derailing the BDS campaign. A Ynet article disclosing the Israeli strategy relating to the pro Palestinian campaign disclosed the close links between the Israeli Government and the Jewish ‘pro’ Palestinian organizations. It revealed the manner in which both have been acting in concert to subvert this humanitarian discourse.

According to the Ynet article, Eran Shayshon, Director of Policy and Strategy at the Reut Institute*, had a clear message to his Israeli Government - we need to recruit left-wing groups associated with BDS to control our opposition. The mission set by Shayshon and the Reut Institute was:
“to divide and drive a wedge between the leaders of the BDS campaign.”
"For Israel, the key is to actually making a clear distinction between the extremists and the rest. The goal is to divide them,” Shayshon says.
“That means to be open to listen to criticism from moderate voices against the government, in order to return the extremists back to their natural size. To achieve this goal, we explained to the government representatives that we have to operate with as large a base as possible; meaning, recruit not only right-wing agencies and groups to the fight, but also left-wing groups who criticize the government.”
This clarifies the role of JVP within the movement and explains the rationale behind the BDS campaign against some of our most profound pro-Palestinians voices (Norman Finkelstein, Alison Weir, Daniel Barenboim, Jacob Cohen and many others).

And here is Max Blumenthal/JVP/ Mondoweiss’ thought policing agenda as articulated in clear by Hasbara merchant Shayshon in Jerusalem: "The message for left-wing organizations is that criticism is legitimate, but there are red lines of terminology and entities with whom we cooperate.” When you read this you may ask yourself, who was it who changed Mondoweiss comment policy, banning any criticism of the Jewish State that analyses Jewish perspectives. Was it Philip Weiss in NYC or Eran Shayshon in Jerusalem?

In case you still find this hard to accept, I’ll be as clear as I can. Shayshon instructed his government that liberal Jews, the Blumenthals, JVPs and Mondoweisses are good for the Jews. Now, we may understand how Max Blumenthal and Philip Weiss make it in and out of Ben Gurion airport. Shayshon has provided us with a possible answer. I guess that the same applies to Omar Barghouti, as long as he keeps close ties with Judith Butler and the Jewish crowd.

Shayshon admits that his strategy wasn’t as successful as he wished.  “We initiated meetings between government representatives and several Jewish left-wing organizations in Israel and abroad, but it did not bear any fruits. So we lost effective and good soldiers for the fight." We now know that our so-called Jewish ‘allies’ have been negotiating with the Israeli Government behind our backs while claiming to care for Palestinians and their plight. This is a textbook case of a controlled opposition operation. We are inundated with Immanuel Goldsteins. I am not shocked by this--my book The Wandering Who exposes the ideological, political, spiritual and cultural continuum between Zionism and its imaginary Jewish dissent—but I am surprised Shayshon exposed his Sayanim network in our midst. I trust he knows what he is doing.
But the betrayal doesn’t end there.  Even B'Tselem, an organization many of us cherish, is also primarily committed to the Jews and their interests. Uri Zaki, B’Tselem’s former US Director told Ynet,
"I went to universities in the United States, specifically on Apartheid Week, in order to explain that I was an Israeli patriot, and to oppose the boycotts. Like the Jewish left-wing groups in America who joined the fight against the boycott, our position has great influence. It is true that we will not fight a boycott of settlement products, but our efficacy in the fight over sovereign Israel's good name is very obvious, much more than that of right-wing groups.”
Interesting isn’t it? Zaki, an Israeli patriot, was welcome to speak at Israeli Apartheid Week in opposition to BDS, Anna Baltzer, another Jew ‘anti’ Zionist was desperate to stop me from talking at the same Israeli Apartheid Week because I advocate the Palestinian Right of Return. She failed by the way.
According to Ynet,
“B'Tselem has already proven its contribution when it strongly criticized the Goldstone Report, which greatly embarrassed South African jurist Richard Goldstone.”
The message is unmistakable. Jewish progressives are dedicated primarily to Jewish interests and the Jewish state is such an interest. There is no way to hide it anymore. This explains why the Palestinian solidarity movement has never achieved anything for the Palestinians. It is now becoming clear that the BDS is the front that Israel prefers to fight. Instead of confronting authentic Palestinians over their Right of Return, Israelis are engaged in an internal Jewish battle over ‘the right to BDS.’ It might be hilarious except that the lives and the prospects of millions of deprived refugees are at stake.
