Heavy fighting outside Mariupol despite launch of Ukrainian peace talks

Scores of casualties were reported as eastern Ukrainian militias were allegedly closing in on Mariupol port hours before a ceasefire pledged by President Poroshenko was announced. Authorities say they repelled the attacks and the city is calm.
The fighting near Mariupol has cost the cost the lives of seven civilians, including two children, during the two days, Konstantin Batozsky, adviser to the Head of Dnipropetrovsk Region, said on Friday.
“Yesterday, the fighting led to the deaths of four civilians, including two combine operators involved in harvesting. Today, three civilians were killed (including two children). A total of 23 people were injured,” Batozsky wrote on his Facebook page.
On Friday, Shirokino village, some 20 kilometers west of Mariupol, remained the main battleground in the Donetsk Region, with “no fighting taking place within Mariupol’s city limits,” Batozsky said at a press conference.
The cameraman for RT’s Ruptly video agency confirmed that fighting is currently taking place outside Mariupol – in Shirokino village.
Batozsky stressed that the Ukrainian army has enough personnel and military equipment to prevent the militias from capturing Mariupol.
However, the militias told the RIA-Novosti news agency that a group of their armored personnel carriers and tanks has already penetrated Mariupol, with street battles taking place in the city.

“Our squad entered the Talakovka and Sartana districts. They are distant from the Vostochny neighborhood where the fighting between the militias and the security forces is taking place – so the squad was able enter Mariupol without any resistance,” they said.
Mariupol is one Ukraine’s major ports and the second largest city in the Donetsk Region, with a population of 450,000 people.
It’s currently the main stronghold of the Ukrainian army in the area and hosts the Kiev-appointed authorities of the Donetsk Region.
Mariupol was surrounded by the militias during their counter offensive against the government troops, which began on August 24, with heavy fighting going on for the last two days.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian military lost at least 50 troops in the fighting near Mariupol, a sea port on the southeastern coast of Ukraine, the People’s Republic of Donetsk (DNR) militias said. Three soldiers from the Ukrainian National Guard were taken prisoner, they added.
According to the DNR militias, they also destroyed four armored personnel carriers, 11 automotive vehicles, a mortar and a warehouse containing fuel and lubricants.
Meanwhile, the National Guard’s press-service claimed that they managed to eliminate a column of self-defense forces’ armored vehicles when it was attempting to make its way to the Shirokino village.
The destroyed column consisted of five tanks, three self-propelled guns, a Grad artillery rocket system and heavily-armed personnel, the National Guard said.
The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) also spoke about the deteriorating situation in Mariupol and the risk of military confrontation in the city.
“The situation in Mariupol and the surrounding area raises concern due to increased military activity, primarily to the east of Mariupol city,” they wrote in a report from September 4.
According to SMM, heavy fighting was taking place near the villages of Shirokino (24km east of Mariupol ) and Bezymiannoye (34km east of Mariupol city).
The locals informed the observers that they had heard about 50-60 explosions as Shirokino “was shelled and that there had been casualties.”
The electric power station in the village was destroyed and subsequently the village was left without electricity, the SMM added.
The fighting comes as another round of peace talks on Ukraine’s crisis, involving Kiev authorities, E. Ukraine self-defense forces, Russia and the OSCE, kicked off in Minsk, Belarus.
On Friday, the sides agreed a ceasefire, which would reportedly come into force on the same day, starting 6 pm local time (15:00 GMT).
During the talks, the sides also hope to achieve the unconditional exchange of prisoners, monitoring of the situation under the authority of the OSCE, and the withdrawal of Kiev troops from the residential areas of Donetsk and Lugansk Republics.
Ukraine has been engulfed in violent internal conflict since April, when Kiev’s military began its crackdown on the southeastern regions of the country.
According to United Nations’ estimates, over 2,249 people have been killed so far and more than 6,033 wounded in the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
The number of internally displaced Ukrainians has reached 260,000, with another 814,000 finding refuge in Russia, the UN said.

Once again Israel is very much in the news these days, especially after its new bout of aerial bombardment of Gaza.
As if under a knee-jerking hypnotic trance since these raids began in early July, the Western media again went into “poor-little-Israel-is-only-defending-itself” mode.
Anyone daring to say otherwise will feel the full impact of the “A” word: “anti-Semitism!” That dreaded insult is unleashed like a bolt from Zion’s “Olympus” upon all who criticize Israel!
Jews are a very tiny group of people: just under 16 million worldwide in a planet where over 7 billion people live and toil. That’s a mere 0.2 percent of the global population; the other 99.8 percent of mankind is a wide assortment of ethnic and religious groups.
That in our day and age any man, woman or child should be attacked or harassed on account of race, creed, nationality, ideology, social or physical characteristics is completely unacceptable. The world needs to come to grips with the age-old tragedy of Jews being so often discriminated and persecuted.
However, continuously crying “Anti-Semitism!” to stifle all criticism of Israel’s seventy years of genocidal attacks on the Palestinians does not and should not work anymore.
If discrimination is what Jews truly fear, then the best way to allay such fears is by promoting greater awareness, understanding and transparency amongst the public, of the highly complex historical, political and social issues driving such discrimination.
Especially considering that the worst discrimination facing mankind today is not so much discrimination by large majorities against specific minorities, but rather brutal discrimination on the part of very powerful and well-organized minorities against the vast majority of us all.
Those powerful minorities that threaten everybody everywhere include “bankster” money-masters, giant media moguls, drug lords and blood-thirsty warmongers embedded inside certain superpower governments. Some call this the establishment, others the banking over-world, or simply, the global power elite.
What’s a “Semite?”
Considering Israel and Zionists brand millions of people around the world “Anti-Semites!” we should start by asking what then is a “Semite”. Sites like My Jewish Learning explain this as follows: “the name Semite comes from Shem, the eldest of the three sons of Noah…While Shem and his sons are of biblical antiquity, the Semite is of much more recent origin, dating from eighteenth century Europe… In medieval times… similarities between Hebrew and Arabic were perceived in studies of grammar and lexicography. It was at this time that the two protagonists – the Semite and the Aryan – came into existence. Both are myths… Both originated in the same way and suffered the same misuses, mostly indeed at the same hands. Both names have their origins in scholarship and refer to language. Both date from the great development of comparative philology in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries”.
Arabs are therefore also “Semites”, in which case shouldn’t we be saying that the worst, most racist and murderous episodes of genocidal “Anti-Semitism” in today’s world is the anti-Semitism unleashed by American, British, European and Israeli elites against “Semitic” Arabs throughout the Middle East?
Take a good look at Bill and Hillary Clinton, George Bush, Tony Blair, David Cameron, John Kerry, Benjamin Netanyahu, Avigdor Lieberman, Moshe Feiglin, Ayelet Shaker: all are directly responsible for the murder of untold millions of “Semitic” Iraqis, Syrians, Palestinians, Libyans and other Arabs…
If my memory serves me right, in his day Mr. Hitler made extensive use of the term “Aryan” to describe his “master race,” however since the end of World War II this has been pretty much dropped… Isn’t it time we also dropped “Aryan’s” twin brother, “Semite”?

Setting the record straight
Engineered confusion is a key component in PsyWar, as Israel’s very effective spook agency Mossad aptly indicates in its motto: “By deceit shalt thou wage war.” If I may paraphrase Saddam Hussein, “Anti-Semitism” is probably the “mother of all global and historical deceits!”
Let’s therefore clearly define four very distinct and separate categories which will help to clarify and introduce transparency into the ongoing debates over Zionism, Israel and the behavior of both; even if pro-Israel militants go to extremes trying to confuse and roll them up into one sole, and thus false, category:
1. Judaism: a millenary religion. Being non-evangelical, Judaism is socially un-intrusive; no Jew will ever knock on your door on a Sunday morning to try to convert you to the faith of Moses.
2. Jewish People: a very tiny (0.2% of world population), globally-dispersed ethnic group with common cultural, social and religious characteristics, whose members hold a wide variety of ideological and political beliefs.
3. Zionism: a nationalist, racist, political ideology founded in 1897 by Theodore Herzl. Zionism operates through a very powerful and intricate global network of lobbies, think-tanks and pressure groups, all loyally aligned to one overriding priority: the interests and goals of the State of Israel;
4. Israel: a sovereign Nation-State imposed on Palestine in 1948 through force and terrorism.
Powerful Zionist organizations illegitimately claim to speak on behalf of all Jewry. This too is false, for there are legions of anti-Zionist Jews who do not primarily identify with Israel, often rejecting its extreme nationalist policies: Argentine musician Daniel Barenboim, US academic Norman Finkelstein, Israeli writers Israel Shahak, Ilán Pappé, Yakov Rabkin and many others, including anti-Zionist rabbi groups like Neture Karta. Zionists leaders brand such of their lot as “self-hating Jews” (sic!).
In short, stating that opposition to Zionism is “Anti-Semitism” is an outright lie.
People fighting Zionism might be called “Anti-Zionists”, and people fighting Israeli crimes in Palestine could be called “Anti-Israelis”. But not anti-Semites. Anti-Zionists and Anti-Israelis have nothing to say about Judaism as a religion, or Jews as a global ethnic group.
The author of this article is an Argentinean of Italian stock. Yet when confronted with today’s many critics of Argentina and Italy, he would never dare to scream: “Anti-Argentinism!” or “Anti-Italianism!” – much less “Anti-Catholicism!” – at them.
No, no… It’s time for all Jews to grow up and behave like responsible adults and citizens.
No, no… It’s time for all Jews to grow up and behave like responsible adults and citizens.
If every time Israel and Zionists perpetrate the unspeakable upon their foes, the Western media and governments allow them to hide behind the “A”-Word, then a point will be reached when this irresponsible attitude will no longer be tolerated. That’s when global reactions may get nasty.
Especially considering that Zionist organizations are so inextricably bound together with global bankers, media, and governments, wielding huge influence over the internal and external affairs of countries housing significant Jewish populations like the US, UK, France, Germany, Ukraine, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico.
In truly democratic countries, citizens have an inalienable right to respectfully criticize and unmask the genocidal policies of any state sponsoring and carrying out ethnic cleansing and State terrorism, as Israel does.
This includes the inalienable right to openly debate Zionist policies and the excessive influence wielded by its lobbies, shock groups and smear organizations like AIPAC (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) and ADL (Anti-Defamation League) in the US, and OSA (Argentine Zionist Organization) and DAIA (Delegation of Israeli Associations in Argentina) in the author´s native Argentina, which have politically harassed him for many years.

Are all Jews ‘Semites’?
Sephardic (Semitic) Jews in Israel and the West are a minority, which is notable since they are the ones who can claim probable descent from Old Testament Hebrews.
Most Jews in Israel, the US, Britain, Europe and Argentina, for instance, are of Ashkenazim origin, and here lies a key factor of far-reaching political consequence.
Ashkenazim Jews descend from the Khazars, a Euro-Asiatic Caucasian people who in the 7th to 9th centuries built a magnificent decentralized confederation of Nomadic tribes ruled by a king generically called the “Khagan”.
The 8th Century saw them threatened with assimilation by two powerful neighboring political, military and cultural empires: the Christian Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium, and the Islamic Caliphate in Baghdad.
Accordingly, in 740AD the wise Khazar kings made a portentous, unprecedented and revolutionary decision: they warded off unwanted Christian and Muslim pressure and influence by converting en masse to Judaism.
Centuries went by, the Khazar Empire saw its twilight; Byzantium fell; Islam became dominant in that region, and nomadic Khazars discretely settled into present-day Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Poland, reaching Central and Western Europe through Romania and Germany; especially their larger cities. Wherever the Khazar/Ashkenazim went, they carried Moses’s faith with them.
In short, Ashkenazim Jews – mostly blond or red-head, light-eyed, white-skinned -are not related to the Hebrews and Israelites of the Bible. They have little or no “Semitic” blood in their veins, and thus no genuine historical or ethnic claim to the Holy Land of Palestine.
This was explained by researcher Arthur Koestler in his 1977 book “The Thirteenth Tribe: The Khazar Empire and its Heritage”. In 2009, University of Tel Aviv historian Shlomo Sand published “The Invention of the Jewish People” which claimed that the very concept of “one people” is an outright invention: “There never was a Jewish people, only a Jewish religion, and the exile also never happened – hence there was no return.”
Sand rejected most of the stories of national-identity formation in the Bible, including the Exodus from Egypt. “It’s all fiction and myth that served as an excuse for the establishment of the State of Israel.”
He adds that “The first Jews of Ashkenazi (Germany) did not come from the Land of Israel and did not reach Eastern Europe from Germany, but became Jews in the Khazar Kingdom in the Caucasus.” Sand added that Zionists’ need to devise a shared ethnicity and historical continuity produced a long series of inventions and fictions, along with an invocation of racist theses. Some he said were concocted in the minds of those who conceived the Zionist movement, while others were offered as the findings of genetic studies conducted in Israel.
Combating ‘Anti-Semitism’
In 2004, the Bush Administration set up a special State Department office to “monitor and combat ‘Anti-Semitism’ worldwide.”
Its first task was to define what “Anti-Semitism” is. Unable to draft its own definition, it resorted to a “Working Definition of Anti-Semitism by the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia”, which states: “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
It then gives a series of “examples of Anti-Semitism” such as “accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust… accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide than to the interest of their own nations… Demonizing Israel, drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis… Blaming Israel for all inter-religious or political tensions…”
Why all the convoluted logic? Why all the layers upon layers of engineered confusion?
Would it not be better to abide by the more transparent view stated by Zionism’s and Israel’s Founding Father, Theodor Herzl, who in his 1898 watershed book The Jewish State explained that “the Jewish question exists wherever Jews live in perceptible numbers. Where it does not exist, it is carried by Jews…”
Why not call things by their true names as suggested in the four categories above, and address them individually? Any real discrimination would then become glaringly obvious!
Let Zionism and Israel openly defend themselves for what they are, and stop hiding behind all the Jewish people and the religion of Moses.

Nusra releases video of Lebanese abductees denouncing Hezbollah

Published Friday, September 5, 2014
Police and soldiers abducted by jihadi militants from Lebanon's northeastern town of Ersal last month appeared in a video released Friday by their captors urging Hezbollah to withdraw from Syria.
At least nine troops and police officers could be seen in the27-minute long propaganda tape released by the al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate al-Nusra Front in which the jihadi group accuses Hezbollah of intentionally targeting women and children in Syria.
"If you have nothing to do with Syria, get out. If you want to fight, go to Palestine. If you don't want to fight, stay at home," one of the detained security forces, presumably speaking under intense pressure, said in the video titled "Who will pay?"
Another abductee noted that the attacks on Lebanon, including suicide bombings, only began after Hezbollah intervened in the Syrian war.
Several of prisoners repeated the phrase, "Why do we have to pay for your actions?"
Hezbollah's entrance in the Syrian war last year on the side of the government largely turned the tide in the three-year conflict against the mostly-Islamist militants fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
Syrian rebel groups, including Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), reacted to Hezbollah's entrance by unleashing a wave of car bombs, suicide attacks and rockets against neighborhoods in Lebanon viewed as sympathetic to Hezbollah.
Last month jihadi militants abducted over 30 Lebanese police and soldiers, including those featured in the video, during a five-day battle with the army in the northeastern border town of Ersal.
About 28 of them are believed to still be in the militants' custody, including 18 captured by Nusra and 10 by ISIS.
Last week ISIS handed the decapitated body of one of the soldiers it had beheaded back to Lebanese authorities.
The militants have issued several demands in exchange for freeing the remaining captives, including the release of Islamists being held in Lebanese prisons, and for the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces from Syria.

Did Israel Offer ISIS $10 Million to Free Steven Sotloff?
Franklin Lamb
Though details are not yet fully known to this observer, reliable sources who have contact with DAASH report that the Islamic State rejected frantic Mossad efforts to buy the release of American journalist Steven Joel Sotloff.
This much is credited with a fair amount of certainty. On 8/1/13 Steven Sotloff, born and raised in Florida, checked into Room 303 of the Hotel Istanbul in the small border town of Kilis in southern Turkey. Three days later on 8/4/13, shortly after checking out of the hotel and heading to the border to take the Kilis-Aleppos highway south into Syria, Mr. Sotloff and his “fixer” were abducted at a check point manned by unknown jihadists.
Ben Taub, an acquaintance who met Sotloff in Kilis and whose account of that meeting is reported in the Daily Beast, describes a conversation the two had over beer in the town’s only bar.
“Sotloff told me he was sick of being beaten up, and shot at, and accused of being an Israeli spy. Just the day before, Turkish police had hit and pepper-sprayed him for taking pictures at a protest in a nearby city. He told me he wanted to quit reporting for a little while, at least on (the) conflict in the Middle East, and maybe apply to graduate school back home in Florida. But first he wanted one last Syria run. He said he was chasing a good story…”
What is not reported by Taub, but which is mentioned by my own sources, is that the ‘fixer’ set the American journalist up and sold him for cash to rebels fighting the Assad regime. The ‘fixer’ is also accused of stealing, nearly nine months later, the Mossad ‘down payment’ entrusted to him for delivery to the jihadists holding Mr. Sotloff.
At the same time the US Zionist lobby has been intensively lobbying the Obama administration to bomb IS forces in Iraq and Syria, Israeli agents were reportedly talking with IS about obtaining Mr. Sotloff’s freedom and offering $10 million to DAASH as part of a release deal.
Over the last 48 hours Mr. Sotloff’s ‘fixer’ has reportedly disappeared from public view, and is no doubt himself being hunted and marked for death as Israeli and perhaps American agents track him.
This is not the first time, nor likely will it be the last, that Westerners or others seeking to report on events here—or who simply show up in exciting places to bear witness or do good—have gotten themselves into a fix. New arrivals around here often are unaware that the ‘war economy’ along the Turkish-Syria-Iraq border these days means that just about anything, or anyone, is up for sale at the right price. There is plenty of buyer’s cash available, and that attractively pushes profits up even higher. Even sworn enemies regularly do business—either through agents or sometimes even directly—with criminal gangs and others, and the commodities run the gamut from oil, arms, counterfeit US $ 100 bills, an array of drugs, women, children, would-be jihadists and just about every other tangible asset you can think of—this while simultaneously they fight each other nearby and pledge devotion to Allah and loyalty to “humanity.”
Mr. Sotloff, who was in Libya during June of 2011 and covered parts of the Libyan civil war from Benghazi and Misrata, was accused by the Gadhafi regime of being a Mossad agent. IS also reportedly had come to believe this is what he was as well, based apparently upon information derived from their prisoner during interrogations, which likely included torture. Mr. Sotloff had lived in Israel from 2005 to 2008, according to Israelis who knew him. He studied for a year at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, a private college north of Tel Aviv, and played on the local Raanana Roosters rugby team. He returned to Israel more recently for at least one visit. It was not clear when he obtained citizenship, but that is relatively easy under Israel’s Law of Return, which encourages Jews from around the world to immigrate.
Steven Sotloff held both American and Israeli citizenships, according to the Zionist Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Times of Israel has reported that Sotloff moved to Israel in 2008 to finish college, and while threre reporting throughout the Middle there he never shared the fact he was Jewish, opting instead to tell them he was a secular Muslim. "He sometimes even chose to tell people that he was of Chechen origin, and that Sotloff –was a Chechen name.
US security analyst Gordon Duff reports that Mr. Sotloff was an IDF veteran. Sotloff's nationality was kept secret until U.S. and United Kingdom officials verified the authenticity of the ISIS execution video. Governments involved said the secrecy surrounding Sotloff's Israeli citizenship was necessary to avoid further endangering the journalist's life while it was in the hands of IS extremists.
Yet, being accused of working for a foreign government these days in this region is not uncommon. This observer has been accused of being a CIA agent while at the same time also of being a supporter of the Lebanese national Resistance led by Hezbollah and Hamas. Many around these parts simply do not understand why someone from a ‘safe and prosperous country’ would be over here if he was not being paid by some government’s security services. Many don’t understand Americans or what patriotism means to most of us. For a majority of Americans it’s not a question of “My country right or wrong!” as the bleats of the John McCain-Lindsay Graham’s insist. Rather it’s a question of, as Commodore Stephen Decatur put in back in April of 1816, having returned from the Barbary Wars in off Libya, as some historians argue, the first post–Revolutionary war hero: “My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; but if wrong, to be set right.”
Americans I cross paths with around the Middle East, love their country, recognize we have many problems of our own back home, but they want to change their governments policies toward this region and to support the Palestinian cause while seeking to end US government complicity in Zionist crimes against Palestine.
With respect to the claimed Mossad offer, ISIS reportedly balked at the proposal for several reasons, including the one stated publicly, i.e. the US bombings of ISIS fighters in Iraq. But an additional reason, reported to this observer, was the most recent Israeli aggression against Gaza:
“Think of this execution as also a gesture to the Palestinian Gaza Resistance. As the Zionists do not put any value on other than Jewish lives, let them taste justice. No Jew, Christian or Muslim who works for Mossad or who works to confiscate one inch of Arab land will be treated with respect. They will taste Allah’s punishment.”
Was the fact that Mr. Sotloff was Jewish and had written for the Jerusalem Post a factor in his savage murder? Possibly. In today’s Middle East line-up, one’s religion unfortunately is sometimes of paramount importance in determining if one lives or dies.
Accounts from family and friends in Florida suggest that Steven Sotloff was a decent enough man, and he may have been what he appeared to many to be—an individual caught up in a Middle East maelstrom for which few these days are prepared, and in which even fewer—scarcely anyone in fact—ought reasonably indulge themselves in feelings of confidence about their own personal security.

ISIS acting as an “Agent Provocateur” to forward US/NATO interests in destabalising the whole of the Middle East
“There is no doubt that Islamic State is an utterly reactionary sectarian force. But it is a force that came out of U.S. Policy and the destruction of the whole region. ISIS or Islamic State, is a direct result of U.S. Policy of fomenting religious, ethnic national differences, in Iraq, in Syria, as policy for the war in Iraq and for overthrowing the government in Syria. Again and again they have used absolutely reactionary groupings in these policies.”
