The emergent Egyptian-Gulf alliance: Libya and Yemen in the crosshairs

It seems clear that the ties between Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with the exception of Qatar, are evolving dramatically in economic and military matters, at a time when the unrest in Yemen and Egyptian concerns over the continued chaos in Libya are leading to a profound military cooperation between the two sides.
Cairo – An Associated Press report published earlier this week, quoting Egyptian and Gulf officials, said that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait were discussing the creation of a military pact to take on extremists in the region, particularly in Libya and Yemen, with the possibility of creating a joint force to intervene around the Middle East. The report said this alliance would operate separately from the anti-ISIS coalition led by the United States.
Certainly, such an alliance would stand to bring a number of gains, especially for Egypt. For instance, Saudi Arabia will be funding arm deals on behalf of Egypt, reportedly including those signed with Moscow. This is while other Gulf countries have expressed their willingness to help finance deals for arms and fuel, which Egypt has to import.
So far, there has been no formal declaration regarding the nature of this alliance, but there are reports indicating the idea follows a meeting between the military leaders of the international anti-ISIS coalition in Washington in mid-October.

Despite the fogginess of the information available regarding the required contribution of each country in the alliance in question, the chief of staff of the Egyptian army, General Mahmoud Hijazi, is said to have put the matter forward to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. According to Egyptian sources, there are extensive discussions regarding its feasibility.
Sources close to the Egyptian presidency said that the alliance would see the expansion of joint military exercises, with Saudi and Emirati forces training in Egypt in the coming period. The sources said the alliance would then be operationalized to tackle insurgent groups in Yemen or carry out strikes in Libya, pointing out that there are grave concerns in the Gulf regarding possible threats from Yemen and Iraq.
The same sources said the UAE and Saudi Arabia would fully fund the operations, while Egypt would provide logistical support. However, the sources discounted direct ground operations in the first few months of the formation of the presumed structure.
There are indications Egyptian military airports in western Egypt could be used to launch air strikes in Libyan territory when needed, carried out by Egyptian, Saudi, and Emirati warplanes in coordination between the commands of the three armies.
Logistically speaking, the Egyptian army cannot at the present time participate in any ground force aiming to carry out external operations, with the exception of its peacekeeping roles around the world, though these involve no more than a few hundred troops. Another issue is the stigma the Egyptian public associates with its army’s participation in the Kuwait liberation war in 1991, and the precarious internal fronts the army is operating along. President Sisi is aware of the implications of the sensitive phase the Egyptian army is currently undergoing, but at the same time, he has a desire to assert Egyptian influence in the Arab region.
Speaking to Al-Akhbar, Egyptian security expert Major General Mahmoud Abdel-Aal said, “Talk about forming an Egyptian-Gulf military alliance is natural, given the challenges the Arab countries face from extremist elements, and the chaos that foreign powers seek to spread in several Arab countries under the name of the Arab Spring.” “The Libyan experience in change has taken the country into a spiral whose final features would not become clear for many years to come,” he added.
For his part, military expert Major General Ahmed Abdul-Hakim said, “The military strategy followed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi does not allow implicating the army in any battles that would cause losses to the Egyptian forces,” and added, “The Egyptian-Gulf alliance is part of the attempt to rein in extremist forces in the region.”

Netanyahu Reassures Jordan’s Abdullah over Al-Aqsa “Status Quo”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with by phone with Jordan's King Abdullah II to reassure him that he would not allow Jews to pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque.

"I spoke today to King Abdullah of Jordan and we agreed that we will make every effort to calm the situation," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu and Abdullah II
"I explained to him that we're keeping the status quo on the Temple Mount and that this includes Jordan's traditional role there," he said, using Israel's name for the holy mosque.

Under the current status quo, Jews are permitted to visit the esplanade but not to pray there for fear it would cause friction at the third holiest site for Muslims.

King Abdullah "recalled that Jordan firmly rejected any measure undermining the sanctity of the Al-Aqsa mosque", a palace statement said.

Jordan's status as custodian of the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and other Muslim holy sites in annexed east Jerusalem is enshrined in the 1994 peace treaty between the two countries.

Concerns that Israel was set to legislate changes to the status quo have sparked weeks of unrest at the site, with Zionist extremists have been staging marches in which they call for praying in al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jordan, Palestine Complaint to UNSC over Israeli Violations

Earlier on Wednesday, Palestinians and Jordanians have urged the UN Security Council to demand that Israel immediately stop provocations and incitement against Muslim holy sites in al-Quds, warning that further escalation could lead to another crisis threatening peace in the Middle East.

Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the "actions blatantly intended to assert Israeli control over the Mosque continue unabated'.'

Mansour said in a letter to the Security Council that stun grenades and rubber-coated bullets were fired early on Wednesday at Palestinian worshippers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, seriously injuring at least 30 people.

Jordan's UN Ambassador Dina Kawar said in a separate letter to the council that Israeli special forces and police prohibited Muslim worshippers from entering and allowed religious and political extremists inside the holy mosque.

"This blatant and unlawful use of force against one of the holiest sites on earth for Muslims have resulted in fires breaking out, damage to mosaic works on ceilings and to the structure of the building, burning of the carpets and rugs and damage to other facilities,'' she said.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah earlier on Tuesday warned against the Israeli agression and juddaization in the holy city of al-Quds.

During his speech on the tenth day of Muharram, the Lebanese resistance leader urged both Arab and Muslim nation to stand by the Palestinian people and save al-Aqsa Mosque which "is in real danger."

EU foreign Chief, in Gaza, Calls for Palestinian state

Local Editor

The European Union's new foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini on Saturday appealed for the establishment of a Palestinian state, saying the world "cannot afford" another war in Gaza.

"We need a Palestinian state -- that is the ultimate goal and this is the position of all the European Union," Mogherini said during a trip to Gaza, devastated by the third Israeli offensive in six years.

EU Chief Federica MogheriniHamas and other resistance groups confronted a brutal 50-day Israeli assault against the besieged strip, which resulted in the deaths of 2,140 Palestinians and the injury of more than 12,000 others.

Mogherini's visit comes as frequent clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police occur around the Al-Aqsa mosque in occupied east al-Quds.

Recent confrontations have been largely triggered by calls by Zionist extremists for Jews to pray in the holy mosque.

She voiced hope that Gaza would avoid another major conflict.

"It is not only the people of Gaza that can't afford having a fourth war, all the world cannot afford this," she said.

"We cannot just sit and wait. If we sit and wait it will go on for another 40 years. We have to have action now," said Mogherini, a former Italian foreign minister who recently took over from Catherine Ashton as the top EU diplomat.

Palestinians are seeking to achieve statehood in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank with east Jerusalem as the capital.

Sweden last month became the first EU member in western Europe to officially recognize the state of Palestine.

Asked whether the EU might do the same, Mogherini said that such a move was "not among the competences" of the 28-nation bloc.

More Israeli War Crimes Documented in Two Additional Reports

Posted on
by

Two days ago I posted an article about a new report from Amnesty International documenting what appear to be war crimes in Israel’s recent campaign in Gaza, specifically in the targeting of residential homes and apartment buildings. The report examined eight separate instances of attacks upon civilian homes, attacks in which approximately 104 people were killed.

Now comes two new reports, from the Euro-Mid Observer for Human Rights, also documenting Israeli war crimes in Gaza over the past summer. One of the reports, like the Amnesty report, focuses on the deliberate targeting of civilians, and is entitled “Indiscriminate Attacks and Deliberate Killing,” while the second , entitled “The Israeli Matrix of  Control,” examines the Israeli military’s practice of using Palestinians as human shields. The use of human shields is a charge Israel often levels against Hamas, but evidently it is a practice that the Zionist state, rather hypocritically, engages in itself, and apparently not all that infrequently. The Euro-Mid report documents six instances, in Khan Younis alone, of Palestinians being forced to become human shields during the 51-day conflict.

First Comprehensive Investigation of Latest Israeli Assault Documents War Crimes

In the wake of the 50-day Israeli assault that devastated the Gaza Strip, reconstruction must not be the only priority, according to the nonprofit organization Euro-Mid Observer for Human Rights. All perpetrators of war crimes must be held to account, and Euro-Mid has taken the initial step by completing the first comprehensive investigation into Israeli actions during “Operation Protective Edge.”

“If we want young Palestinians to turn away from violent resistance in the future, they must believe that international law will be respected and enforced,” said Ihsan Adel, legal officer for Euro-Mid, a nongovernmental human rights watchdog focusing on the Middle East-North Africa region.
“Our investigation documented both indiscriminate attacks on civilians by Israeli forces and their use of captured Palestinians as human shields. When the UN Human Rights Council arrives in the coming days to conducts its own investigation, our reports will already have laid the groundwork. Now it is up to the international community to demonstrate to the youth of today that the rule of law applies to everyone.”

The initial fieldwork for the Euro-Mid investigation began on July 10, the second day of the massive Israeli assault on Gaza. Throughout the course of the conflict, 24 Gaza-based researchers, many with legal backgrounds, visited every hot spot that erupted, interviewing more than 432 individuals involved in or eyewitnesses to144 instances in which more than two Palestinians were killed at one time.

The Euro-Mid investigation is summarized in two reports: “Indiscriminate Attacks and Deliberate Killing: Israel Takes Revenge on Gaza by Killing Civilians,” and “Israeli Matrix of Control: Use of Palestinians as Human Shields.”

Indiscriminate Attacks

Between 8 July and 26 August, Israeli forces conducted an estimated 60,664 raids into the Gaza Strip. This report documents that in many cases, the attacks were indiscriminate. Not only did Israeli forces fail to take sufficient measures to protect noncombatants, including children and the disabled, but in a number of instances they deliberately targeted locations with concentrations of civilians. Reports from physicians on the ground strongly suggest that Israel deployed “unconventional weapons” (nail bombs and DIME – “dense inert metal explosive” – munitions), which are designed to cause maximum damage and thus are not considered permissible in densely populated areas – either legally or morally.
Likewise, the investigation showed that the so-called “warnings” issued by the government of Israel, typically in the form of telephone calls or “roof knocks,” were insufficient to offer protection.

Use of Palestinians as Human Shields

Euro-Mid documented use of Palestinian civilians as human shields by Israeli military forces in at least six cases in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. These civilians were held against their will for hours or days to protect Israeli soldiers from fire, and in the meantime were subjected to inhumane and abusive treatment such as beating, humiliation and exposure to the hot sun while naked for long periods of time.
In contrast, the Euro-Mid team did not find any evidence of Palestinians who were forced to stay in their homes or to use their bodies for the protection of Palestinian resistance factions, as charged by the Israeli government.

Call to action

The indiscriminate attacks on noncombatants, deployment of unconventional weapons and the use of Palestinians as human shields are violations of international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Euro-Mid Observer for Human Rights calls on the Fact Finding Committee on the Gaza Conflict recently established by the UN Human Rights Council, soon to arrive in Gaza, to make every effort to focus international attention and pressure on all parties found to be guilty of these crimes. Likewise, the UN Security Council and General Assembly must back these efforts with their own positions of authority and visibility

“The reconstruction of Gaza is needed for Palestinians to be able to live,” said Ramy Abdu, PhD, Euro-Mid chairman. “However, without accountability for crimes and protection of human rights, it will be a life without dignity or hope.”

Ashura-JFK-9/11 and the beauty of Shia Islam

By Kevin Barrett

Today is Ashura, a major Muslim holiday.
Ashura commemorates the tragedy of Karbala - the martyrdom of Hussein by the evil scumbag Muawiya
But don’t say “happy Ashura.” At least not to a Shia Muslim.

For Shia Muslims – and anyone else who chooses to lament the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson Hussein on this day – Ashura isn’t about happiness.

A holiday that isn’t about happiness?! That’s a hard concept for Americans to grasp. Here in the USA every holiday is a celebration of the “pursuit of happiness”: We say happy Fourth of July, happy Halloween, happy Easter, happy Veterans Day, happy President’s Day, happy Thanksgiving, happy Groundhog Day, happy National Secretaries Day, you name it. The only non-happy American holiday is Christmas – not because we’ve officially admitted that most people are miserable from seasonal affective disorder or being forced to interact with their families or whatever, but because for some reason we always say “merry Christmas” not “happy Christmas.” And “merry” basically just means “sufficiently happy while drunk on eggnog to tolerate ones relatives.”

So for Americans, every holiday is ostensibly happy or merry. An unhappy holiday is an oxymoron.

There are only two exceptions to this rule, and both are unofficial holidays: September 11th and JFK Day. Every time 9/11 and 11/22 roll around, people remember America’s two greatest-ever national tragedies: The killing of the last real President, and the final death of the Republic. 9/11 and JFK day are a bit like Ashura: They commemorate evil, unjust, murderous coups d’état.

Shia Muslims commemorate the slaughter of a good ruler, the Prophet’s grandson and legitimate heir Hussein, by the evil S.O.B. Yazid, by beating their chests and backs with light chains. I wouldn’t mind seeing Americans likewise beating themselves every November 22nd to commemorate the murder of a relatively good leader, JFK, by a bunch of evil SOBs including LBJ, Allan Dulles, George H.W. Bush, Cord Meyer, James Jesus Angleton, Meyer Lansky, and very likely David Ben Gurion. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Americans beating themselves with HEAVY chains every 9/11 to mourn the murder of the American dream by a bunch of neoconservative scumbags who make the Elders of Zion look like small-timers.
The same neocon propagandists who brought you 9/11 are trying to make you hate Ashura – so watch out for made-in-Israel reports about “Crazy Shia fanatics beating themselves bloody.”
Alongside the self-flagellating processions,  Shia Muslims also stage theatrical re-enactments of the Passion of Hussein on Ashura. Maybe Americans could borrow that idea too, and have a parade re-enacting the doomed Dallas motorcade in every American city, town, and village. Now that Sherwood Ross and Jim Fetzer have identified every one of the six shooters who fired at JFK in Dallas, we can outdo the Shia by featuring a whole slew of villains in our re-enactments: Deputy Sheriff Harry Weatherford firing from the top of the County Records Building; US Air Force marksman Jack Lawrence firing from the south end of the Triple Underpass; George H.W. Bush’s protégé Tony “Nestor” Izquierdo, supervised by Bush himself, firing the only unsilenced bullets from the Dal-Tex building; CIA asset Roscoe White firing from the Grassy Knoll; LBJ’s personal hitman Malcolm “Mac” Wallace firing from the Texas School Book Depository; and CIA asset Frank Sturgis firing from the north end of the Triple Underpass.

Alongside the shooters, Kennedy Day re-enactments could also feature the “big villains”: the psychopaths LBJ, Bush, and Dulles; the paranoid-psychotic schemer Angleton, the genocidal fanatic Ben Gurion, and the mobster scumbag Lansky.

And alongside the martyred hero JFK, they could feature smaller heroes including Lee Harvey Oswald, a federal informer who was trying to stop the assassination; and Abraham Bolden, the Secret Service Agent who exposed a parallel Chicago plot to assassinate JFK.

If we really work at it, JFK day could be bigger than Ashura – and more dramatic than Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
And I won’t even get into what we could do on 9/11 day.

Though I will say that if we beat ourselves with heavy chains for going along with such a transparent, and transparently evil, coup d’état as 9/11, we should also make sure to beat the neocons with some really, REALLY heavy chains.
Getting back to Ashura – and I know this has been a long digression, but hey, we Americans have our heads you-know-where and mostly only talk about America – as I say, getting back to Ashura, there is something truly beautiful about a huge public holiday that mourns the murder of a good, just, pious, holy, legitimate leader by a psychopathic scumbag and his henchmen.
Though Shia and Sunni Muslims generally observe Ashura differently, there is no disagreement whatsoever about the bottom-line issue: The murder of the good, holy, just, and legitimate ruler Hussein by the psychopathic scumbag Yazid was a cosmic tragedy and a terrible turn for the worse in human history. All Sunni Muslims agree with their Shia brothers and sisters about that. The Sunnis just don’t go around beating their breasts about it.

But maybe they should. Maybe we should all make a point of beating our breasts once a year in mourning for horrific injustice in general, and the slaughter of good leaders by bad ones in particular.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Anyone of you who sees wrong, let him undo it with his hand; and if he cannot, then let him speak against it with his tongue, and if he cannot do this either, then (let him abhor it) with his heart, and this is the least of faith.”
Since the early days of Islam, Muslims have often found it difficult to raise their hands to defend good leaders against bad ones; and to strike down bad leaders in favor of good ones. This problem, of course, afflicts all of humanity, not just Muslims. But since Islam was the seal of prophetic revelations, containing a blueprint for social as well as spiritual order, it experiences the problem in especially acute form.
Shia Muslims, through their rites of Ashura, are hating injustice with their hearts…and speaking out against injustice not just with their tongues, but with their whole bodies as they act out the tragedy of karbala. Though I am not Shia myself, and definitely not into self-flagellation of any sort, no matter how good the reason – and Lord knows I have done a few things that merit expiation – I find the Shia celebration of Ashura beautiful and inspiring.

So today – Ashura, the Tenth of Muharram, the 1,375th anniversary of the martyrdom of Hussein – my heart is with everyone who is mourning the cosmic tragedy of Karbala, and vowing to fight for truth and justice with heart, tongue and hand, come what may.

The U.S. Has Ignited A Vicious Politico-religious Sunni-Shi’ite Civil War in Iraq And Syria

By Rodrigue Tremblay

[There] “is a memo [at the Pentagon] that describes how we’re going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.”
General Wesley Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (1997-2000), (March 2, 2007)
"I don't want to just end the [Iraq] war, but I want to end the mind-set that got us into war in the first place."

Presidential candidate Barack Obama, (January 31, 2008)

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.”
Abraham Lincoln (1809—1865), 16th President of the United States (1861-65)

November 06, 2014 "ICH" - When the U.S. government of George W. Bush (2001-2009) decided to illegally invade militarily the country of Iraq and overthrow the Sunni government of Saddam Hussein, against the advice of many thinking persons, it opened a “Pandora Box” of woes that is still spewing out its calamities today, and probably will for many years to come. This is the first and foremost cause of the current quagmire prevailing in Iraq and in Syria today.

In 2009, the Barack Obama administration thought that it could wash its hands and walk away from the “biggest mistake in American military history” and let local Iraqi politicians sort things out and form an “inclusive” government in Baghdad. Here is what President Obama said on February 27, 2009:
“Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end... Through this period of transition, we will carry out further redeployments. And under the Status of Forces Agreement with the Iraqi government [negotiated by the previous Bush administration], I intend to remove all U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2011.”

Well, as it should have been expected by anybody who has any knowledge of history in that part of the world, Iraq was far from being a stable “democracy”. Instead, the Shi’ite-led and paranoid Malaki government was everything but “inclusive” of the Sunni minority. Indeed, the Shi’ite-controlled Iraqi government was bent on taking revenge on the Sunnis for the suffering Shi’ites endured under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. Using the sophisticated military gear supplied by the U.S., it tracked down Sunni opposition and dissenters to the regime, many were killed, and it excluded prominent Sunni politicians from the government.

There lies the second cause of the Sunni revolt that has helped create the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State militia (IS), [also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)], whose fighters are often foreign volunteers, at least in Syria. Some are ethnic Chechens, and many come from western countries such as the U.K. —When one sows terrorism, one should expect to reap terrorism. And that’s what the U.S. government and some other western countries have got in Iraq and Syria. In the U.S. case, it is for invading the former militarily and for reneging on its obligations to behave as a responsible occupying power under international law.

Added to that ill-thought and improvised U.S. policy in Iraq was the incoherent and misguided American policy of destabilizing the neighboring Syria by supporting and  arming Islamist rebels against the established Assad government, in association with the Sunni governments of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. These three countries had political and economic reasons of their own to oppose the Syrian Assad government, but not the United States. Many of these American-supported “moderate” Islamist terrorist organizations have since been absorbed by the rabidly terrorist ISIL organization. One can hardly think of a more flawed policy.

Last year, while the religious totalitarian terrorist IS organization was gaining strength both in Iraq and in Syria, and U.S. ambassadors in those countries were sounding the alarm, the Obama administration’s attention was concentrated on overthrowing the elected government of Ukraine and on overthrowing the Assad regime in Syria. Now, the IS militia are well entrenched in many cities and well armed with sophisticated American-supplied weapons that they have used to terrorize, torture and slaughter thousands of people who oppose their lunatic views, both in Iraq and Syria. That’s a total mess.

But what does the Obama administration do? Faced with a most serious humanitarian and military crisis in Iraq and in Syria that the United States itself has ignited with its policies, President Obama, surrounded by his neocon advisers (whose real allegiance is most dubious), has appeared hesitant, confused, overwhelmed, clueless, incoherent, passive and reactive. The old saying “A stitch in time saves nine”would seem to apply here. Indeed, problems tend to pile up when solutions are postponed and delayed. The brutal monster of IS in Iraq and in Syria has been allowed to develop and grow because of the U.S. government's wishful indifference in Iraq and of its misplaced policies in Ukraine and in Syria. The result has been a Washington D.C.-made quagmire in those countries. It is not exaggerated to say that the U.S. government has blood on its hands for the savage carnage taking place in these countries.

How could the world stand still when fanatical and delusional seventh century barbaric butchers slaughter people right and left, for their ethnicity, their religion or their ideas? There is a word for that savage behavior, and that is “ethnic cleansing”. It is genocide.

The sad truth is that for the last twenty some years, there has been very weak intellectual leadership in Washington D.C., and this at the highest echelons. Ruinous wars and costly financial crises have resulted.
In the future, the Clinton-Bush-Obama years will probably be known as the “Vacuum years”, because the U.S. government of the day would have abused and de facto destroyed the international law system created after WWII, while being incapable of providing an efficient and socially and politically responsible alternative. In fact, the U.S. neocon-inspired U.S government of the last twenty years has been unable to match its world empire ambitions with concrete solutions and workable institutions. This is not a good record, far from it.

On Tuesday, November 4, American voters had their say about the U.S. elected officials who have been behind the mayhem and destruction brought to Iraq and Syria, and also Libya, by their failed policies. Indeed, the November 2014 mid-term election was dubbed a “referendum on President Barack Obama“, focusing on his competency, coherence and relevancy, but also on the weak state of the U.S. economy. The electoral results have not been very good for democratic candidates who paid a heavy price for their president's failures.

With both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate now under firm Republican control, it is obvious that the last two years of the Obama presidency will be difficult for the embattled “lame-duck” president.

With both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate now under firm Republican control, it is obvious that the last two years of the Obama presidency will be difficult for the embattled “lame-duck” president.

PFLP: Time for action to confront occupation crimes in Jerusalem

Posted on November 7, 2014 by Alexandra Valiente
jeru4
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine urges all friends of Palestine and progressive, justice-oriented and revolutionary forces around the world to mobilize the widest possible solidarity actions with the Palestinian people in Jerusalem who are under attack and under siege, daily confronting cultural genocide, ethnic cleansing and Israeli war crimes. The Front also urges Palestinian and Arab communities around the world to mobilize in defense of their sisters and brothers in Jerusalem and the entire Palestinian people.
In particular, the leadership of the Front urged its supporters, friends and allies to condemn the occupation actions against the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, and to organize demonstrations, rallies, and political and direct actions at all levels to confront racist Israeli policies and attempts to isolate the Palestinian people in Jerusalem from the rest of Palestine.
Comrade Abu Ahmad Fuad, Deputy General Secretary of the PFLP, said that “our people will not be suppressed, not in Gaza, nor in the West Bank, not in occupied Palestine ’48, nor in the diaspora, nor in Jerusalem, where there a great popular uprising has been ignited.”
In a statement, the Front saluted the resistance in Jerusalem, and the martyr Ibrahim al-Akkari, and called for “support for the popular intifada in Jerusalem, strengthening and widening the uprising in the towns and the streets of Jerusalem,” emphasizing the importance of the participation of all Palestinians, Arabs and popular movements in these actions.
khaled
Commenting on the escalation in Jerusalem, Comrade Khaled Barakat, Palestinian writer, said that “Israel is committing war crimes and attempting a social and cultural genocide against our people in Jerusalem. The latest escalations against our Palestinian people in Jerusalem include mass arrests, demolition of homes, confiscation of land, construction of colonies, announcements of new colonies, the closure of Al-Aqsa mosque, attacks on holy sites, attempts to partition the Haram al-Sharif, intensifying attacks on youth and students, doubling and quadrupling the presence of occupation police and soldiers in the area, placing hundreds of new cameras in the streets of Jerusalem to surveil Palestinians, particularly in Arab neighborhoods, increased confiscation of Jerusalem IDs and the confiscation of thousands over past years, and the creation of new lengthy prison sentences for ‘stone throwing.’”
“All of these actions by the occupation represent its failure to crush the popular movement that arose in Jerusalem after the killing of Mohammed Abu Khudeir. Israel waged a massive war against our people in Gaza, partially in an attempt to defuse and suppress a Palestinian uprising in Jerusalem, occupied Palestine ’48 and the West Bank that was growing daily. Even its massive crimes in Gaza could not suppress the rising of the people. The occupier can delay, but it cannot escape an imminent intifada,” said Barakat.
“International actions are needed to support the uprising in Jerusalem, including mass demonstrations in the cities of the world against the racist attacks and policies in Jerusalem, and actions to put serious pressure on the United Nations, international institutions and the complicit governments of imperialist powers and their tools. It is critical to monitor and expose Israeli crimes, and support the Palestinian people’s popular institutions and movements in Palestine and in particular in Jerusalem by organizing delegations, building solidarity, and intensifying boycott campaigns and the isolation of the occupation state, building on the immense mobilizations that have taken place in support of Gaza and demanding the boycott and isolation of the settler colonial racist occupier,” Barakat said.
“We must be prepared, and we must organize to make November 29, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, a day and a week of action internationally in solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle for return and liberation, and to defend Jerusalem and Palestine. And the weeks leading up to November 29 must also be weeks of mobilization and support for our people on the front lines in Jerusalem.”
shuf“For the past twenty years Israel has engaged in a systematic process of isolating Jerusalem from the West Bank and the rest of Palestine,” Barakat said. “Palestinians in the West Bank and in Gaza cannot access their capital. Israel’s isolation of Jerusalem from the rest of the Palestinian people and Palestinian land is part and parcel of a systematic racist Zionist policy that runs counter to any standard of human rights. It is an attempt to break the steadfastness of the Palestinian Jerusalemites and to reshape the city through importing settlers and colonizers, in an attempt to remove the Palestinian and Arab character of the city. Palestinians in Jerusalem are under siege, from all sides faced with the ongoing and systematic theft of their right to live in their city and their Jerusalem identity cards; closure and partition of their sacred holy sites; the massive officially-sanctioned influx of occupation colonizers; the closure of their neighborhoods and constant military attacks, raids and arrests.”
“The resistance will continue in Jerusalem by all means until it is liberated. Those who are struggling today in Jerusalem and confronting the Israeli occupiers are the new Palestinian generation that was born after the great betrayal of the Oslo agreement. This generation was not fooled or misled by the rhetoric of the Oslo era. It must be noted that the absence of the Palestinian Authority in the Jerusalem area is in fact encouraging the growth, continuation and strength of the resistance,” Barakat said.
In addition, he noted,
“it is important to expose the Zionist discourse that is trying to promote the conflict in Palestine and in Jerusalem as a religious conflict. It is not a religious conflict and never was a religious conflict. They are trying to portray this as a conflict of ‘Muslims and Jews.’ Instead this is a people’s movement under occupation for freedom and liberation, confrontong a racist settler colonial occupier that is attempting to undermine and destroy the indigenous Palestinian and Arab character of the city by all means.”
jerus2“The occupation’s policy of imposing high taxes on Jerusalem, forcing Palestinians into poverty; gentrification as a form of displacement; and inducing Palestinians to sell their homes through subterfuge and manipulation are all part of an organized assault on Palestinians in Jerusalem,” Barakat said.
“Jerusalem is a representation of the struggle of the Palestinian people for over 66 years, for 100 years, to defend their rights on their land. The towns around Jerusalem, centers of resistance and popular struggle, like Beit Hanina and Issawiya, are being pushed into concentrated areas as their land is confiscated before their eyes.  Shuafat Refugee Camp, where Palestinian refugees have been struggling for their right to return for over 66 years, is repeatedly invaded and attacked, under siege from all sides. What do the occupiers expect? Of course they will meet the anger and the resistance of the people!”
“This is in fact happening in every Palestinian city and village, from Haifa to the Naqab to Gaza to the West Bank – the occupier displacing Palestinians and confiscating their land, the constant practice and the racist nature of Zionism. The occupier is importing settlers from New York, Toronto, Paris and elsewhere to replace the Palestinians who have lived in their city for centuries, who are the indigenous people of the land,” Barakat said.
“This is happening before the eyes of the so-called ‘international community,’ meeting the silence of Ban Ki-Moon who condemns the resistance of our people defending their lives and their land. It is happening while the Arab League is busy acting as puppets and tools for imperialists yet takes no real action to protect ‘sacred Jerusalem. The Palestinian Authority and Palestinian capitalists are marketing the people of Jerusalem. Abu Ala’ Qureia, responsible for the ‘Jerusalem file,’ is known to be one of the orchestrators of Oslo and also used to sell cement to the Israelis for his profit and their construction of the apartheid wall. It is complicit in the isolation and crimes against Palestinians in Jerusalem, in shamelessly spreading the term ‘East Jerusalem’ and dividing the city rhetorically; not supporting the struggles of Jerusalemites; encouraging partnerships between Palestinian and Israeli capitalists while the ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem mounts; not addressing Jerusalem in the international arena; and reports of new agreements with the Israelis to separate prisoners of Jerusalem from other Palestinian prisoners,” said Barakat.
Barakat also warned that
“the campaign to defend Jerusalem and Palestine must not be limited in its demands and slogans of struggle, to the defense of Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is under attack, closure, and threat by Zionist military, political and settler forces. It is not only about the sacred place of Al-Aqsa, but about all of Palestine and its capital. Unfortunately, some forces, intentionally or not, limit the frame of reference to only Al-Aqsa, which can feed into the Zionist discourse that the struggle in Jerusalem is a religious conflict.”
“Jerusalem today is in the forefront of popular resistance, just as Gaza stands in the forefront of armed resistance. We must address Jerusalem as part of the whole of Palestine and the entire Palestinian cause. Jerusalem was, is and always will be the unified eternal capital of Palestine. This city has a very special place in the hearts and minds of all Arabs, and all of the people of the region. It must not be held under the occupation of a racist, Zionist settler colonial regime. And this applies equally to every inch of the land of Palestine,” Barakat said.

PFLP Prison Branch: New law on prisoner releases is part of systematic escalation against Palestinians

prisssThe approval of the Zionist Knesset for a new law that attempts to impose restrictions on the release of Palestinian prisoners who have engaged in resistance operations including the killing of Israelis, comes in the framework of a systematic escalation against the Palestinian people, whether in Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, everywhere in Palestine, or inside Israeli jails, said the branch of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in occupation prisons.
The statement said that this new law will not have an effect on reality, noting that “experience has confirmed that the occupation always abandons these decisions and responds to the demands of the resistance forces in the exchange of captured Zionist soldiers held by the resistance with Palestinian prisoners held in occupation jails.”
“This decision may affect the so-called ‘goodwill measures’ between the Palestinian Authority and the occupation, under which prisoner releases are conducted for the resumption of the negotiations process, but this process has been widely criticized from the prisoners, who refuse to link their liberation with negotiations with the occupier,” said the Front.
The Front called for action to expose the occupation policies and laws of terror at all levels against the Palestinian prisoners, and emphasized the right of the Palestinian people to resist by all means, through wich the occupation will release Palestinian prisoners unconditionally despite any laws of the occupation state.

“Serry plan” for reconstruction perpetuates the siege on Palestinian people

mizherrComrade Jamil Mizher, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and leader of its branch in Gaza, strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority leadership’s acceptance of the so-called “Serry plan” and United Nations oversight of the reconstruction of Gaza, following the Israeli war crimes on the Gaza Strip.
The resistance factions have a right to respond to the growing crimes of the occupation to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, including in light of the ceasefire agreement, said Mizher.
“It is clear that the situation in Gaza is very difficult in light of the suffering of Palestinian civilians on an individual and collective basis and the massive displacement after the recent Zionist aggression. All sectors in Gaza suffer bitterly from the Israeli blockade which has not been lifted,” Mizher said. He noted that occupation aggression is continuing and escalating in various forms against the Palestinian people, including the escalation in Jerusalem, the ongoing attacks on Al-Aqsa, the expansion of settlement construction, and the continuation of the blockade of Gaza and refusal to open the crossings despite the ceasefire agreement.
Remarking on the role of the Front, Mizher said that
“The PFLP is committed to relieve the burden on our people, especially in Gaza, and working unremittingly to build a broader popular and national unified front with a unified national vision to confront the occupation. The Palestinian Authority, the national reconciliation government, and Hamas and the factions all have obligations and must act in earnest to ease the burden on the people.”
Mizher rejected the plan of United Nations Middle East envoy Robert Serry for the reconstruction of Gaza, saying that
“the Serry plan is totally unacceptable. I do not see how Palestinian Authority officials can accept such a plan, which intensifies the suffering of the Palestinian people by legitimizing, perpetuating, and providing cover for the blockade and siege.”
Regarding the ceasefire between Palestinian factions and the Israeli occupation signed under Egyptian auspices after 51 days of war on Gaza, Mizher said
“It is too early to discuss military action, despite the readiness of the resistance factions to respond to the occupation by all means as long as it occupies our land and imprisons our people.”
He noted that the PFLP has a position against “calm,” and considers it to be a wrong policy, but is committed to national consensus on this subject that is tied to the interests and demands of the Palestinian people.
