DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Thousands of people participated on Friday in the march of “To the Aqsa Mosque” which headed from the Syrian capital Damascus to the Syrian city of Quneitra under the auspices of the Syrian popular campaign for the celebration of Jerusalem as the capital of Arab culture for 2009.

The march started from the Palestinian refugee camp of Al-Yarmouk in Damascus and headed toward Quneitra, the closest point to occupied Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque.

This step came in response to the invitation made by Al-Quds international institution and the association of Palestinian scholars abroad, which called for considering Friday a day for the support of Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque.

Upon their arrival in the city, the participants performed Friday prayers in the presence of the governor of Quneitra and a number of party and popular leaders in the city.

For their part, Dr. Imad Al-Din Rashid, a representative of Al-Aqsa institution, and Hussein Awawdeh, a senior Hamas official, had the chance to deliver speeches in which they called on the Arab countries to practically move to save the holy city and Mosque from the Zionist threats.
