Palestinian trade unions call for immediate action to end electricity crisis
[ 03/07/2010 - 03:47 PM ]
GAZA, (PIC)-- The Palestinian trade unions called on all free people of the world and Arab and Islamic countries to intervene and take urgent action to lift the siege on Gaza and fulfill their responsibilities in putting an end to the electricity crisis in Gaza.
The trade unions representatives, at a news conference in Gaza on Saturday, also called on the "Egyptian brothers" to intervene to resolve the power crisis and increase the amount of energy supplied to cover the deficit, which reached 56%, and to also provide industrial fuel for Gaza's sole power plant, and natural gas in the long-term.
They said, "Most of the districts of Gaza have witnessed a standstill in most of the factories and workshops, increasing the amount of unemployment and increasing damages to electrical appliances and machinery, and causing serious damage to the factories.”
The representatives denounced the reluctance of the Ministry of Finance in Ramallah to finance imports of industrial fuel, despite the European Union’s acknowledgement of the transfer of required funds.
They also condemned the Ministry of Finance in Ramallah for its misinformation in the transfer of funds, and the imposition of a high fuel tax reaching as much as 65% on diesel fuel transported from the European Union, emphasizing that the monies collected were sufficient to operate the plant for more than six years.
Palestinian forces, factions, and notable personalities called for a firm stand against all who blockade and harm the interests of the people, and added that those who played a part in the power crisis in Gaza should stand trial and held accountable for the victims of the power outages.
