A day before Israeli general elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says a Palestinian state will not be established if he is once again elected as premier. Netanyahu made the comment in an interview posted Monday on the website of the Maariv daily newspaper in an apparent bid to garner the support of hardliners in Israel. Also, speaking in a tour of a settlement neighborhood in the occupied east Jerusalem al-Quds,
Netanyahu pledged to increase settlement activities there. He stressed that Tel Aviv will construct thousands of more settler units despite international criticism against the controversial policy. Netanyahu's Likud party is lagging behind its rival Zionist Union coalition. Israeli settlement construction on occupied Palestinian lands runs counter to international law. Tel Aviv has been criticized by the international community for refusing to halt the illegal move.

Just ahead of the general elections in Israel, the Zionist Union party is playing its cards to bring down Netanyahu. The party’s number two Tzipi Livni says she has decided to give up her rotation agreement with leader Isaac Herzog to better serve the party’s goal of replacing the current prime minister. Livni urged the voters to elect her party, saying she did what she had to do and now it’s their turn to bring down Netanyahu.
Referring to her prior agreement of taking premiership in rotation with Herzog, Livni insisted she forgoes the plan if the party wins. She also called on Likud to learn from her party that how responsible leaders should be.
Netanyahu and members of his party have called the last-minute move as panicking. They said it shows the Zionist Union is unable to withstand pressure. Netanyahu has already acknowledged the risk of defeat amid opinion polls showing greater popularity for the Zionist Union.
