THE SIEGE OF GAZA HAS BEEN BROKEN

LINK

May 24, 2009 at 9:18 am (Activism, Gaza, International Solidarity)

New updates on the Hope Convoy….. direct from Ireland…

TODAY IS THE DAY WE BREAK THE SIEGE!!

I have had several text messages this morning, starting at 4:30AM Irish Time (Gee Thanks Guys) couldn’t drag myself outta bed until now to go online LOL Egypt is 2 hours a head of us in Ireland.

Great news the convoy aid and vehicles remained safe over night nothing happened, everything is grand. The members left for Rafah at 6AM Egypt time and just a few minutes ago I was informed they are 5 km from the border, now I just got another text and it looks like they are all together at the border waiting (Sorry the last text is a little confusing and I’m not really awake yet)

Wow, I’m feeling happy and sad this morning. I should have been on this convoy, but unknown to me, until I dragged it out of the drawer, my passport had expired and did not get back in time for me to go with my friends. So when they actually cross into Gaza it will be hard for me, but I will feel so happy for them after such a long wait in Egypt, still I may have tears:(

More as I get it. I expect today to be a busy day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Second update…..
THE SIEGE HAS BEEN BROKEN AGAIN!!!!
Just got off the phone, everyone is at the border crossing right now. The bus with the politicians has been brought to the front of the line at the crossing. AND the doctors who have been in Gaza since May 5th, and who just went on Hungerstrike this week because Egypt would not allow them into Gaza? They have joined with the “HOPE” convoy and are on the bus with the politicians. They will be crossing over with the convoy now! VICTORY!!!
I am just told in text that one vehicle has crossed over now past the first checkpoint into the compound, one more checkpoint to go!! The others are moving forward. Friend taking photos now, hope to get them online today!
VIVA PALESTINE!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Third update…..

Well, just had another phonecall and as the bus with the politicians and the Doctors on hungerstrike (mentioned in last update) came through the first checkpoint and were inside the compound with only the 2nd checkpoint to go through before arriving inside FREE GAZA, then the doctors were pulled off and then sent back outside the compound, So the Politicians are asking for for the same and will be returning back to the rest of the convoy. The politicians have refused to go through, their views are that everyone, including the doctors who just joined the convoy who were on hungerstrike should all get through.

also the media is there doing interviews with convoy members and the politicians.

so we have a stand off, stay tuned

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fourth update…..
Latest news is that the convoy members are again passed the 1st checkpoint and now back inside the compound where passports are checked and cleared. This may take some time to get all passports cleared, or it could go quickly, just no telling at this point. Once they are cleared they will go through the final checkpoint into Gaza.
Update on the Doctors who joined the convoy (see earlier posts below) The Egyptians are claiming security reasons for not allowing them passage. The “hope” convoy will continue to do what it can to help them move forward but there are no guarantees to the outcome.
I’m using spell check today as I am exhausted and had not much sleep for the last few days like the convoy team, But they are running on excitement now as they are so close to Gaza. Me, on the other hand, I am running on many of cups of tea and spell check LOL, So if I post anything that needs clarification, or anyone has a question I may be able to answer, just post a comment and I’ll give it a go, or see what I can find out in my next phonecall.
more as I get them
Hope arrives at the Rafah crossing, on way to Gaza
[ 23/05/2009 - 09:31 PM ]
BRUSSELS, (PIC)-- The European campaign for lifting the siege on Gaza Strip has announced Saturday that the Hope convoy has arrived at the Rafah crossing in preparation to enter into the besieged Gaza Strip to help sick Palestinian people.
According to officials of the campaign, the convoy comprises 40 trucks loaded with assistance, 10 ambulance vehicles accompanied by tens of European lawmakers and supporters.
The convoy anchored in the Egyptian Alexandria Port for one week waiting for permission to unload, but the Egyptian authorities refused to allow it unload in Alexandria and ordered it to unload at Port Said, which the organizers did.
According to the organizers, the convoy finished all the necessary documents and the procedures needed to proceed to the besieged Gaza Strip. It is expected in Gaza on Saturday.
The Italian senate members Fernando Rossi, who leads the convoy, revealed that there were 12 European lawmakers from Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, and Britain in addition to 160 European activities from different EU countries who have joined the trip, and that they were now in Port Said city to help deliver the assistance to Gaza Strip, especially to Palestinian citizens who need special care.
"The contributions were made by individuals, and NGO's in the EU", the organizers disclosed.
Nearly 400 sick Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip, mostly children, women, and elderly people, suffering from chronic diseases have died so far due to the Israeli rejection to allow them leave the Strip to have medical treatment abroad.
FLYNT LEVERETT & HILLARY MANN LEVERETT, in the NYTimes, here
"PRESIDENT OBAMA’S Iran policy has, in all likelihood, already failed. On its present course, the White House’s approach will not stop Tehran’s development of a nuclear fuel program — or, as Iran’s successful test of a medium-range, solid-fuel missile last week underscored, military capacities of other sorts. It will also not provide an alternative to continued antagonism between the United States and Iran — a posture that for 30 years has proved increasingly damaging to the interests of the United States and its allies in the Middle East.
This judgment may seem both premature and overly severe. We do not make it happily. We voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and we still want him to succeed in reversing the deterioration in America’s strategic position. But we also believe that successful diplomacy with Iran is essential to that end. Unless President Obama and his national security team take a fundamentally different approach to Tehran, they will not achieve a breakthrough.
This is a genuine shame, for President Obama had the potential to do so much better for America’s position in the Middle East. In his greeting to “the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran” on the Persian New Year in March, Mr. Obama included language meant to assuage Iranian skepticism about America’s willingness to end efforts to topple the regime and pursue comprehensive diplomacy.
Iranian diplomats have told us that the president’s professed willingness to deal with Iran on the “basis of mutual interest” in an atmosphere of “mutual respect” was particularly well received in Tehran. They say that the quick response of the nation’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — which included the unprecedented statement that “should you change, our behavior will change, too” — was a sincere signal of Iran’s openness to substantive diplomatic proposals from the new American administration.
Unfortunately, Mr. Obama is backing away from the bold steps required to achieve strategic, Nixon-to-China-type rapprochement with Tehran. Administration officials have professed disappointment that Iranian leaders have not responded more warmly to Mr. Obama’s rhetoric. Many say that the detention of the Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi (who was released this month) and Ayatollah Khamenei’s claim last week that America is “fomenting terrorism” inside Iran show that trying to engage Tehran is a fool’s errand.
But this ignores the real reason Iranian leaders have not responded to the new president more enthusiastically: the Obama administration has done nothing to cancel or repudiate an ostensibly covert but well-publicized program, begun in President George W. Bush’s second term, to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to destabilize the Islamic Republic. Under these circumstances, the Iranian government — regardless of who wins the presidential elections on June 12 — will continue to suspect that American intentions toward the Islamic Republic remain, ultimately, hostile.
In this context, the Saberi case should be interpreted not as the work of unspecified “hard-liners” in Tehran out to destroy prospects for improved relations with Washington, but rather as part of the Iranian leadership’s misguided but fundamentally defensive reaction to an American government campaign to bring about regime change. Similarly, Ayatollah Khamenei’s charge that “money, arms and organizations are being used by the Americans directly across our western border to fight the Islamic Republic’s system” reflects legitimate concern about American intentions. Mr. Obama has reinforced this concern by refusing to pursue an American-Iranian “grand bargain” — a comprehensive framework for resolving major bilateral differences and fundamentally realigning relations.
More broadly, President Obama has made several policy and personnel decisions that have undermined the promise of his encouraging rhetoric about Iran. On the personnel front, the problem begins at the top, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As a presidential candidate, then-Senator Clinton ran well to the right of Mr. Obama on Iran, even saying she would “totally obliterate” Iran if it attacked Israel. Since becoming secretary of state, Clinton has told a number of allies in Europe and the Persian Gulf that she is skeptical that diplomacy with Iran will prove fruitful and testified to Congress that negotiations are primarily useful to garner support for “crippling” multilateral sanctions against Iran.
First of all, this posture is feckless, as Secretary Clinton does not have broad international support for sanctions that would come anywhere close to being crippling. More significantly, this posture is cynically counterproductive, for it eviscerates the credibility of any American diplomatic overtures in the eyes of Iranian leaders across the Islamic Republic’s political spectrum.
Even more disturbing is President Obama’s willingness to have Dennis Ross become the point person for Iran policy at the State Department. Mr. Ross has long been an advocate of what he describes as an “engagement with pressure” strategy toward Tehran, meaning that the United States should project a willingness to negotiate with Iran largely to elicit broader regional and international support for intensifying economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.
In conversations with Mr. Ross before Mr. Obama’s election, we asked him if he really believed that engage-with-pressure would bring concessions from Iran. He forthrightly acknowledged that this was unlikely. Why, then, was he advocating a diplomatic course that, in his judgment, would probably fail? Because, he told us, if Iran continued to expand its nuclear fuel program, at some point in the next couple of years President Bush’s successor would need to order military strikes against Iranian nuclear targets. Citing past “diplomacy” would be necessary for that president to claim any military action was legitimate.
Iranian officials are fully aware of Mr. Ross’s views — and are increasingly suspicious that he is determined that the Obama administration make, as one senior Iranian diplomat said to us, “an offer we can’t accept,” simply to gain international support for coercive action.
Understandably, given that much of Mr. Obama’s national security team doesn’t share his vision of rapprochement with Iran, America’s overall policy is incoherent. .... Administration officials argue, with what seem to be straight faces, that the Iranian leadership should be impressed simply because American representatives will now show up for any nuclear negotiations with Iran that might take place.
Similarly, some officials suggest that the administration might be prepared to accept limited uranium enrichment on Iranian soil as part of a settlement — effectively asking to be given “credit” merely for acknowledging a well-established reality. ...... we think that it will take a lot more to persuade Tehran of America’s new seriousness.
Tehran will certainly not be persuaded of American seriousness if Washington acquiesces to Israeli insistence on a deadline .... President Obama himself said, .. that he wants to see “progress” in nuclear negotiations before the end of the year. More specifically, Secretary Clinton and Mr. Ross have been pushing the other permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany to intensify multilateral sanctions against Iran if Tehran has not agreed to limit the expansion of its nuclear-fuel cycle program by the time the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York at the end of September.
This diplomatic approach is guaranteed to fail. Having a deadline for successful negotiations will undercut the perceived credibility of American diplomacy in Tehran and serve only to prepare the way for more coercive measures. Mr. Obama’s justification for a deadline — that previous American-Iranian negotiations produced “a lot of talk but not always action and follow-through” — is incorrect as far as Iranian behavior was concerned. For example, during talks over Afghanistan after 9/11 in which one of us (Hillary) took part, Tehran deported hundreds of Qaeda and Taliban operatives who had sought sanctuary in Iran, and also helped establish the new Afghan government. It was Washington, not Tehran, that arbitrarily ended these productive talks.
Beyond the nuclear issue, the administration’s approach to Iran degenerates into an only slightly prettified version of George W. Bush’s approach — that is, an effort to contain a perceived Iranian threat without actually trying to resolve underlying political conflicts. Obama administration officials are buying into a Bush-era delusion: that concern about a rising Iranian threat could unite Israel and moderate Arab states in a grand alliance under Washington’s leadership.
President Obama and his team should not be excused for their failure to learn the lessons of recent history in the Middle East — that the prospect of strategic cooperation with Israel is profoundly unpopular with Arab publics and that even moderate Arab regimes cannot sustain such cooperation. The notion of an Israeli-moderate Arab coalition united to contain Iran is not only delusional, it would leave the Palestinian and Syrian-Lebanese tracks of the Arab-Israeli conflict unresolved and prospects for their resolution in free fall. These tracks cannot be resolved without meaningful American interaction with Iran and its regional allies, Hamas and Hezbollah.....
To fix our Iran policy, the president would have to commit not to use force to change the borders or the form of government of the Islamic Republic. He would also have to accept that Iran will continue enriching uranium, and that the only realistic potential resolution to the nuclear issue would leave Iran in effect like Japan ... Additionally, the president would have to accept that Iran’s relationships with Hamas and Hezbollah will continue, and be willing to work with Tehran to integrate these groups into lasting settlements of the Middle East’s core political conflicts..."
Blackmailing Nasrallah: Lay Arms or....
Two weeks I posted under the title: Hezbollah The MOST WANTED a report on the UN special envoy Terej Roed Larsen calling for implement UNSCR 1559 (Disarming Hezbullah). I wrote: "They are still after Hezbullah arms (Remember resolution 1559, then July 2006 war, and finally Hezbullah communication network crisis)."
"Moreover, don't be don't be fooled with the "credibility" of U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon after releasing the 4 Lebanese inocent Generals, Narallah called for to consider all possibilities, including the possibility of Israel being behind the assassination.
He said "Israel is capable of committing this crime. It has the motive, and it could have killed martyr Hariri, because it wanted a civil war in Lebanon in which Hezbollah and the Resistance would be a party in, so as to avenge its defeat in 2000 and its humiliating withdrawal from the South. Israel even wanted a regional war to pave the way for US armies to enter Lebanon and Syria and killing Hariri was their gateway"
I don't think the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon shall consider any path leading to CIA and/or Mossad, or Qaeda.
Remember Mubarak fabricated charges against Hezbollah which paved the way to Larsen's Assault. I shall not be surprised to see the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanom going after Hezbullah, and we may see many Hezbullah "LOVERS" saying: Hezbullah is capable of doing it, and may be there is another Sideque under making."
remember these? "Le Hezbollah" theory in Le Figaro & Le Monde?
L'ombre du Hezbollah sur l'assassinat de Hariri 22 Août 2006 Georges Malbrunot - Le Figaro «Le Figaro» révèle qu'un Libanais, proche du mouvement chiite, est recherché pour avoir participé à la préparation du crime contre l'ancien premier ministre. LES ENQUTEURS libanais, en charge de l'assassinat de Rafic Hariri, travaillent depuis quelques mois sur une nouvelle piste, qui conduit au Hezbollah. «L'enquête internationale dirigée par le juge Serge Brammertz s'oriente également dans cette direction», confirme, au Figaro, un proche de Saad Hariri, .... Tout commence par l'identification par les Forces de sécurité intérieure (FSI) d'un groupe de téléphones portables, qui n'a été utilisé qu'avant et juste après le crime. «Leurs propriétaires, une dizaine au maximum, ont cessé de s'en servir, après avoir reçu d'ultimes consignes pour échapper à la traque lancée après la mort de Hariri», affirme une source proche des FSI à Beyrouth. Mais l'un d'eux a commis une erreur, en appelant un de ses amis, (SPIEGEL peddles the same product) qui ne faisait pas partie du réseau de complices...... Selon le proche de Saad Hariri, il s'agit d'un Libanais, évoluant dans la mouvance du Hezbollah et de ses services de renseignement. Il est activement recherché, même si Interpol n'a pas encore été saisi d'une requête en ce sens. «Les enquêteurs libanais ont très peur de ce qu'ils ont découvert», explique la source proche de l'enquête. Les autres membres du réseau, eux, n'ont pas été identifiés. Le Hezbollah n'ignore rien de ce nouvel élément du dossier. Maladroitement, en effet, des FSI sont allés interroger les membres de la famille de l'individu recherché,....
and Le Monde, Feb. 08'?
"...des individus qui photographiaient les lieux ont été identifiés, selon une source sécuritaire à La Haye, comme appartenant au Hezbollah libanais, un mouvement chiite prosyrien. "Tirez-en les conclusions politiques que vous voudrez",tempère Robin Vincent, qui précise par ailleurs que "trois incidents" ont été répertoriés par les services néerlandais. L'identité des juges, placés sous haute protection aux Pays-Bas, reste confidentielle. A Beyrouth, le conseil des ministres a décidé, vendredi, de renforcer les dispositifs de sécurité autour des édifices judiciaires.
L'enquête, toujours en cours, a nécessité le concours d'experts internationaux de haut vol et le recours à des technologies de pointe pour analyser, par exemple, les multiples fragments du corps déchiqueté d'un kamikaze. Mais, à Beyrouth, un membre de la commission d'enquête relativise les bénéfices de ces prouesses techniques en déplorant les "blocages politiques au Liban et dans d'autres Etats qui limitent la marge de manoeuvre des enquêteurs".
Récemment encore, selon une source de renseignement libanaise, le procureur Bellemare s'est vu refuser l'interrogatoire de huit personnalités du Hezbollah.
L'enquête sur le mobile de l'assassinat de l'ex-premier ministre libanais semble avoir progressé. Il serait lié "aux activités politiques de Rafic Hariri", selon l'un des rapports qui estime "probable"que la résolution 1559 du Conseil de sécurité, adoptée en septembre 2004, a "joué un rôle important dans la genèse de L'assassinat". Cette résolution visait, sans les nommer, la Syrie et le Hezbollah. Elle réclamait le respect de la "souveraineté" du Liban et le désarmement des "milices".
Special Tribunal Spokeswoman, Hezbollah Dismiss Der Spiegel’s Allegations
Hanan Awarekeh Readers Number : 83
24/05/2009 Hezbollah media relations’ bureau issues a statement on Sunday in which it dismissed allegations published by the German magazine Der Spiegel and spread by Al-Arabiyya Channel saying that it is nothing less than “police fabrications”.
Der Spiegel claimed on Saturday that the UN special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005, had new evidence that Hezbollah special forces "planned and executed" the Beirut car bombing that killed the former premier and 22 others.
The statement said, “It’s not the first time that a magazine or newspaper aimed at publishing such fabrications and previously Kuwaiti paper “Al-Siyasa” has repeatedly published such reports along with other dailies.”
However, the statement continued “It is nothing more than police fabrications made by the same black room that has kept on fabricating such stories for over four years regarding the Syrians and the four Lebanese officers and others.”
The statement added that “publishing this report in Der Spiegel and promoting for it by Al-Arabiyya is a suspicious issue in its timing and its political and psychological exploitation especially for two sides:“
First it is a pure fabrication aimed at influencing the election campaign in Lebanon on one side, and to deflect attention from the news about the dismantling of spy networks working for Israel on the other."
The report comes just two weeks ahead of a June 7 parliamentary election in Lebanon.
Hezbollah added that the Spiegel allegations "harm the credibility" of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and called on The Hague-based court to act to unmask those behind the "lies" saying the Tribunal has to respond to the published report with much resolve.
The statement concluded that this report and its exploitation come “within the systematic campaigns, which some known parties (Israel, Moderate Arab Regimes, March 14 movement) launched against Hezbollah, and we are positive that these campaigns will fail, just as the past ones did.”
SPECIAL TRIBUNAL SPOKESWOMAN DISMISSES SPIEGEL ALLEGATIONS
Meanwhile, AFP said that a spokeswoman for the tribunal prosecutor refused on Saturday to comment on the Der Spiegel report. "We don't know where they are getting the story from. The office of the prosecutor doesn't comment on any issues related to operational aspects of the investigation," she said.
Haaretz: "Timing, vagueness of SPIEGEL's 'revelation' suggest it was released to sway elections rather than reveal truth."
Future Movement's Gobelz Fares Khashan ...
Haaretz, here
"......Now, even before the report is verified as accurate, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah will have to wage a concerted campaign of denial and damage control likely to zero in on Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and of course, Israel, which it views as seeking to divert attention from allegations that it is operating Lebanese spies by leaking the Hariri story. ....
The report should be treated cautiously for now, as the sources behind it remain unclear, and many of those who could testify to its veracity are dead or missing.
Suspicious timing
It is possible that the UN investigator examining the Hariri assassination received new information refuting earlier intelligence estimates that the murder was the work of the Syrian regime and Lebanese intelligence officials linked to it. The timing of the report, however, gives the impression that it was released more to alter election results than to bring the truth to light. ...
The UN investigator will now apparently be forced to either confirm or deny the Der Spiegel report to prevent the international body from being dragged into the Lebanese electoral maelstrom."
Few things in life are logic
and less so in the politics
but the worst must be :
in the
logic of the Lebanese-political- life
The Harriri-government known as the Siniora-Government
has its own private ,special, independent secret-services
which not a state-secret- police , nor a military-informatio n-department
nor a national-security agency , nor a contra-espionage entity.....
No Sir !!!
it is very special , unique and almost private force
collecting information' s , not about Israel of course
but about the greatest-threat- to-Israel , which is
the Lebanese resistance !!!
what makes this force more "special"is that it is not a secret ,
that the CIA & MI6 plus DSG are assisting it.........
Meaning any information they would collect in Beirut
lands , the next day, on a desk in Washington,London or Paris....
In other words , a spying agency on its own people
assisted by at least three foreign-intelligences- agencies
Which in my book , is called a Spy-agency.
and I guess that in Chinese it must also must be called the same .
On the other hand , we are celebrating in the Lebanon
the dismantling of several other Israeli-spy- rings....
It is a success indeed and we are also proud of it
but let us not fool ourselves !!!
Because Hariri-Siniora and the fascists coalition
should also dismantle that so called "Government- agency"
first and foremost.... which is simply are a
uniformed-official- foreign-agents ,
serving a third country,(or countries)
not the Lebanon.
There are Terrorists with or without uniforms
equally
there also are Spies with or without uniform !!!
What has happened ?? que passa ??
Can a suicide-bomber not climb-up
a 6 meters wall ??
can he not walk around it ??
or simply to dig a tunnel under it ??
Strange matter indeed ....my Dear Watson !!
This first assumption is not valid as it does not stand
against the deductive-logic ,
because, a suicide bomber shall not be bothered
by a wall.......
he (or she) could even blow a hole in that wall....
Something is bothering me , My dear Watson !!!
A wall has two sides ,
and each argument has also a minimum of two sides...
What if ,
the Bombers never have had to cross that wall ??
What if ,
the Bombers resided on the same side where
they executed their operations ???
What if ,
to make it simpler, the Bomber was an Israeli
(or an Israeli agent)
he was someone who has had not to cross any wall ??
What if ,
there was never a Bomber but only a Bomb ??
What if ,
the Bombs were planted only in order
to justify the wall ??
And now that this wall stands ,
they need no more Bombers ??
What if ,
the Wall and the Bombers
have had the same Architect ??
I doubt that a Wall ,
regardless how high or how long it could be,
would stop any Bomber , suicidal or not !!
Syrians once again smell bullshit, and they have no problem calling it.
Assad Says Israel Major Obstacle to Peace, Backs Resistance
23/05/2009 Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Saturday that the collapse of the so-called indirect peace negotiations with Israel was a proof that the Zionist entity is the greatest obstacle to the Middle East peace.
"The failure of the peace process is a blatant demonstration that Israel is the major obstacle to peace," Assad said in an address to a ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Damascus. "Our experience with Israel during indirect peace negotiations mediated by Turkey is further proof of this," Assad said.
"The failure of political action in recuperation of the rights give the resistance the right of their regaining through all legitimate means," Assad asserted. "The failure of political methods to recover their legitimate rights gives them the right of resistance," he explained, referring to nations whose land is occupied by the Zionist entity.
The Syrian President, meanwhile, emphasized that he refuses that the solutions be taken abroad and imposed on Damascus for its implementation. "The supplicate does not achieve anything and we live in a world where there is not a place for the weak," he went on to say.
On Friday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said that resuming peace talks between Syria and Israel would be "useless" without a commitment by the Zionist entity to withdraw from the Golan Heights.
"If Israel does not honor these requirements then there is no point of conducting useless negotiations," Moallem said. "Negotiations will be futile if there is no true Israeli will to make peace and no US involvement. We will not go back to wasting time," he told Syrian state television.
Syria-Na
By Fayyad
We were just talking about how Syria resisted efforts to get sucked into empty cycles of negotiations and manipulated into concession in return for unfulfilled promises. Case in point is the statement made yesterday by Foreign Minister Walid Almuoalem, whose head is seen here on Ariel Sharon’s body, that Syria will not resume peace talks with Israel unless the Jewish state is committed to withdrawing from the occupied Golan Heights.
Walid al-Moualem was responding on Friday to an offer by Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, who two days earlier said that he was ready to resume the talks with Syria immediately but indicated that he would not make any commitments on land first.
"If Israel does not honour these requirements then there is no point of conducting useless negotiations," Moualem said.
"Negotiations will be futile if there is no true Israeli will to make peace and no US involvement. We will not go back to wasting time," he told Syrian state television.
Indirect talks between Syria and Israel, which were being mediated by Turkey, were formally suspended in December during the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.
While the Palestinian Authority leadership would have fell for this PR move as if it has great potential, or as if Israeli and American administrations would return kindness and if you keep offering them every thing on a silver platter with your Arab hospitality, they would eventually agree to a just solution, equal rights, and return of lands and refugees, the Syrians once again smell bullshit, and they have no problem calling it.
As a matter of fact, Almoualem is one of the toughest Arab negotiators, along with Egypt’s Amr Mousa, the Israeli’s have come up against, and they developed personal hostility towards him. Since his last name means “Teacher,” the frustration with Israeli team with his demand for respect as a nemesis was often characterized in commentary by referencing poet Ahmed Shawqi’s line
قم للمعلم وفه التبجيلا كاد المعلم ان يكون رسولا .
(Rise for thy teacher and pay him due respect, for a teacher approaches the status of prophets).
His president, Bashar Alassad, seen here looking like Mr. Mackey, chimed in today, reaffirming why they don’t play well with others… Not that they don’t wanna play, just don’t like being pushed around.
Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, has restated his country's willingness to achieve peace in the Middle East.
But he has described Israel as "a major obstacle towards peace".
He made the comments in his address to a meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in Damascus on Saturday.
"For Syria and for all Arabs, peace is a strategic goal that we will achieve one day," al-Assad told at least 50 foreign ministers attending the meeting in the Syrian capital.
"Peace must include the regaining of Arab territories held by Israel."
He also expressed the need to remain alert about Israeli motivations.
He said Arabs need to ask the right question, namely: Is it possible for a state "that was founded on the illegitimate basis of occupation and the killing of Palestinians and Lebanese over decades - is it possible for it to be seriously pursuing peace?
Their holocaust has long since been reduced to a tawdry business operation, including a Division of Lies and a Division of Blackmail. It’s just one more runaway corporation whose product is bullshit in colorful packaging… sugar and shit spun together in a monstrous confection for those lacking both intelligence and taste. It no longer matters to me that there are so many inconsistencies in the official story that is constantly contradicted by other official sources and just as often by their own sources. I am tired of hearing about it at all. I have holocaust fatigue and am seriously considering suing the nation of Israel for their responsibility in giving me this condition.
Henceforth there will be only one event that is to be legitimately celebrated on May 15th and that is The Nabka. The date of the establishment of the state of Israel is no longer to be celebrated because the nation is illegal as it presently exists. You cannot form a nation where a nation already exists and killing the former occupants and driving the rest into exile is not sufficient grounds to declare yourself a nation and this happening is what The Nabka stands for.
Israel has been a murdering, genocidal mad-dog since the day it began and has been at the cause of just about every incident of unrest throughout the Middle East. Let me further state that the two major wars that Israel engaged in were… neither of them… in response to an attack but were both preemptive assaults upon their neighbors. In one of these instances they attacked an American ship with the intention of causing a war between Russia and the U.S. They are also the primary force behind the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and the sole instigator of war against Iran. They are a demonic entity with no justification for existence.
It’s now becoming clear that they were behind the murder of Prime Minister Hariri. It’s acceptable to assume they are engaged in a war against the rest of humanity and that Israel was created solely to give a certain group of people a sovereign nation whose purpose was to loot the wealth of the nations of the world and to build an enormous military presence to destroy their neighbors and anyone else they don’t like which is anyone else but them.
The world has had enough of Israel’s cynical behavior from the extermination of the Palestinian People; to their blackmailing the world’s food industry for Kosher Nostra Tax, their roving death squads, their torture teams in Iraq and elsewhere, their meddling in the governments of every other nation, their involvement in Sudan and with the Somali Pirates as well as their presence in illegal drug and human trafficking… the list is long.
The boycotting of Israeli goods is making its presence felt and we have to make it our business to look for the 729 in the bar codes of every product that we do not buy; buying only the products that do not bear this number and remaining alert to when they change this number to something else or create an alternative number with which to evade the righteous distaste of the public for anything and everything they make.
The vast majority of Israelis are not Semitic at all whereas the Palestinians most certainly are. Therefore the term anti-Semitic is a bogus slander that is used as a blind by Zionist, Israeli interests to disenfranchise the original Semitic people of Palestine and to give the impression that they are them. They are not and wiping out the people and changing the names of the towns does not make what is not so, so.
Tangentially and in defense of my own self-interest, let me link to the original source of the phrases, “The Truth is Anti-Semitic” and “9/11 is the Litmus Test”. This slight digression is made necessary due to circumstances I won’t go into at the moment.
We all realize that the 24 hour, false propaganda, spin system of the main stream media is nearly entirely owned by Zionist interests as is the entertainment industry and that they are a mouthpiece for murder and disinformation to be justified by all possible means. They are becoming increasingly bankrupt in the eyes of the peoples of the world which is evidenced by the collapse of the newspaper industry and associated enterprises. They are going down. The Apocalypse has lifted the skirts of these shameless whores and revealed the agendas beneath.
Many people these days talk about the Illuminati and the Zionist control of the manifest world via the larger vehicles of the formerly great nations of the Earth. All power comes from a single source and they only have what power they have for as long as it is allowed to them. Once it is cut off, they will have none. Their armies will turn upon them and each other. Their fortunes will disappear, their control will vanish and they will be destroyed or scattered to the winds. Let those who are fearful or complacent continue for their brief hour because it is all coming to an end.
I celebrate The Nabka and no one can change this. The opportunity to re-write this piece of history has expired. The reality of what happened is there to be seen in all of its gruesome behavior from the beginning to the present hour. Scramble like demented fools to control the information and change the perception of the world but Gaza has put that beyond your reach. You exposed yourself once and for all with that heinous action.
The Nabka is real. The Nabka will be celebrated. My heart embraces the people of Palestine and all of the people who suffer under the yoke of these psychopathic scoundrels. Their hour of judgment is coming and nothing will delay or deter it.
Let all who are willing, join with me in a constant, virtual, candlelight procession across the internet in honor and defense of those tormented people who had to misfortune of being on a piece of land that somebody else wanted and took by force.
The time is here for everyone with some remaining thread of conscience to stand forth in solidarity with The Nabka… lest that thread break and you become separated from your own honor, integrity and conscience, should any still remain with you.
Four More Years: The Obamavore’s Dilemma
Dilink
By Lorna Salzman
Can we survive the conundrum of Obama’s presidency: a decent, intelligent man promoting weak and dangerous policies?
I don’t want to say “I told you so”. But the fact is that many people, including Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez, his former VP running mate, exposed Obama’s voting record and political stances long before the 2008 election.
Gonzalez sent out a long memo which I myself distributed to all my lists but apparently few paid attention to Obama’s actual voting record: in favor of the death penalty; support for most Iraq authorization bills; favors for Exelon, Illinois’ nuclear industry, support for “clean coal”, opposition to class action lawsuits and to limits on credit card interest rates, and (hold your breath), active support for neo-con U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, whom Obama praised as his mentor.
So none of what Obama is now doing (or not doing) comes as a surprise. My reaction and that of many independents and greens was a big DUH. Or, what is it about a centrist capitalist that you don’t understand?
Some progressives moan that Obama has reneged on his promises. But in fact he never made these promises. All his statements, with possibly a few exceptions, made it quite clear that he was in lock step with traditional centrist Democratic Party capitalist beliefs and ideologies. Now, when these facts have become clear, too many people are too ready to believe that he changed his mind rather than admit that they were fooled.
Why were they fooled? The answer is obvious. Because he is African-American. Millions of people voted for him because of this alone, thinking that the color of one’s skin and one’s experience as a minority come hand in glove with progressive or radical thought. This is in its own way a converse variant of racism: thinking that one’s skin color is somehow linked on its chromosome with progressive principles.
These people forget that he comes out of the Ivy League, Harvard Law School, and the eerily prescient Democratic Party machine in Chicago, which has carefully groomed him as The Great Black Hope. They really put their money on the right number.
More people voted for Obama because he was African-American than voted against him because of that. Ponder that fact. Ponder the fact that even now, many blacks and liberals are bending over backwards to cut him slack, even after he brought with him the worst most regressive white collar criminals into his private abode and put them in charge of our economic future: slime buckets like Larry Summers, and, overlooking possible “minor” crimes, Eric Holder. The list goes on and on.
And then there were the Wall St./bank bailouts, done without setting the most minimal conditions on this huge payout, and without demanding anything in return. The Democrats railroaded this through for their friends in finance and banking. The Republicans, whose regressive agenda we fully recognize and which in fact called their sincerity into question on this issue, opposed it.
They were right to do so, though for the wrong reasons (although the far right and conservatives had the right reason: keep government from getting its hands into the pants of private business even if it means bankruptcy for businesses and banks). At the very least Obama could have laid down one condition: support universal single payer health care and you will get your bailout. He didn’t. That isn’t what I call a shrewd businessman.
My point is that Obama didn’t change direction or positions. He stayed firm in his commitment to capitalism, corporatism, and Wall St., so firm that he wasn’t going to demand anything in return for rescuing the financial community. I call that not stupid but an intentional betrayal of all those progressives who voted for him blindly, thinking that his election meant a new era.
But lots of people didn’t fall slavishly at the feet of this idol; they saw very clearly what he stood for and where he would go. And he clearly wasn’t going to diverge from traditional centrist capitalist politics. The believers exhibited “the audacity of hope”… blind hope. That’s par for the course for knee jerk Democratic Party members, for paleo-liberals, for African-Americans. There is always an audience for well-trained dog-and-pony shows. They have four years to brush up on their tricks before every presidential election.
The 2008 election was yet another example of Democratic Party blackmail: “do you want another four years of Bush in the person of McCain”? and all that crap, knowing that there was no alternative to either of them, realistically. The usual lesser of two evils argument that we saw offered when Ralph Nader had the cojones to get up and say what we all know (liberals excepted): that the difference between Democrats and Republicans is, generously, the difference between the two slices of buttered bread squashed together.
Unless and until voters acknowledge this last fact, they are destined to continual groping in the dark for something that will forever elude them. So let’s be blunt.
1. There is no chance in hell that Obama is going to adopt the progressive agenda on ANY of the relevant issues (Iraq, Afghanistan, health care, climate change, civil liberties and protection of privacy, bringing Bush war criminals to justice, energy policy, etc.). No chance.
2. The complacency of the electorate in the face of massive bail-outs, including that of the auto industry which should fold up shop and go home unless they are forced to build electric vehicles, trains and buses and wind turbines, must be brought up short.
3. The prayers and reliance of the public on the federal government to save their jobs and homes need to be aligned with reality, by a push for massive relocalization of the economy, which must for survival’s sake become leaner, smaller and non-reliant on continued economic growth and consumption. Republicans fear socialism but so should we, though for somewhat different reasons. Socialism and corporatism are the Tweedledum and Tweedledee of a deluded and disinterested citizenry.
4. The recession needs to be welcomed and augmented by a wholesale drawback by all citizens from compulsive shopping and consumption, shredding of credit cards, demand for public transportation, willingness to pay the full cost of energy and goods by ending all subsidies and tax breaks for energy and corporations, among other things. We should be helping push capitalism over the cliff; it is Wall St. and the banks that will go first. Afterwards, we can reassemble the pieces we want reassembled, in the way we want them to be. Americans still haven’t learned that democracy comes before the economy. The Russians didn’t learn this lesson soon enough.
5. Here is the sine qua non: a grassroots political and electoral movement that will unite behind some basic principles and demands and then put this into practice in a citizens’ PAC that will focus on unseating those phony liberals (mostly Democrats) who are mainly responsible for the betrayal that is being led by Obama. Max Baucus might be considered as a first target for his outrageous behavior on health care, with Waxman and Markey a close second for their huge energy bill, one of the biggest scams to ever get support from the liberal media and pundits.
Yes, the Republicans are repulsive and mendacious. But they always were and don’t pretend to be otherwise. We don’t need their phony cry for “bipartisanship” and “ending the stalemate” in Washington; the Democrats are doing a fine job of sitting in for the Republicans.
We have two years to put these people up in front of a political firing squad.
Yes, some of you will say that the alternative might be right wingers lurking and ready to replace them. But consider this: the Dems might get re-elected but in the meantime they will have to face the wrath of the public and the possibility, even if slim, that their political careers might be over. This is the only way to hold them accountable for their brazen arrogance. They need to be told two things: we don’t like them, and we don’t like the things they stand for.
This message will trickle into the White House soon enough. A grassroots revolt against the deceptions and blackmail of the Democratic Party. A statement that we will no longer accept their contemptuous attitude that continues to lecture us that the alternative is worse. The Democrats in congress, NOT the Republicans, are the ones who need to be put on trial. They need to be told that they do not own our vote and that they must earn it. They have failed. They need to be booted out. Are progressives willing to admit their mistakes and take appropriate action to regain their power as citizens and voters? How long will Democratic Party members fete and re-arm their executioners?
This is the question progressives need to answer. They will be met by clever Democrats telling them to just keep quiet and things will work out. But right now things are working out only for Wall St. The rest of us will be lucky if we get an extension in unemployment benefits or a tiny reduction in mortgage rates. If we listen to the Democrats, we will never get universal health care or get our troops back from Iraq. Come on now, you already knew this, didn’t you?
Time for a reality check about the Democrats. Without it we are doomed to hand wringing and regrets, and a permanent apathy and pessimism that the Democrats will welcome as an accompaniment to the voters’ permanent recusal from civic life.
Netanyahu's West Bank Nightmare -- An Exclusive Video Report
JERUSALEM -- I just spent the evening in a small park overlooking occupied East Jerusalem at a gathering of the Israeli settlement movement's movers and shakers. The settlers were there to cheer three of their leaders who would be presented with the Irving Moskowitz Prize for Zionism. Few of the ultra-religious attendees seemed aware that Moskowitz was a California casino baron who has exploited cheap undocumented Mexican labor to fund the proliferation of radical settlements in the West Bank. None seemed to care. The fulfillment of Greater Israel, an ethnically cleansed Jewish homeland from the Mediterranean to the Jordan River, was paramount.
"This is the future of Israel," Kiryat Arba settlement founder Noam Arnon flatly remarked to me. "We won't let the Arabs and their propaganda network CNN confuse us into thinking anything else."
The settlers were confident that the Israeli army, and by extension, the Israeli government, remains firmly on their side. "We're brothers, we're the same people," one young settler from Gush Etzion told me of his community's relationship with the IDF. "Of course they are on our side."
Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure Uzi Landau, an important cabinet member and ally of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, sat in the front row throughout the ceremony. Afterwards he told my reporting partner Jesse Rosenfeld that the land of Israel belongs to Jews, therefore settlements could never be dismantled. Can anything Benjamin Netanyahu says to Barack Obama about the settlements be taken seriously? The dozens of settlers I spoke to certainly did not think so.
The Moskowitz Prize ceremony was held next to Silwan, a thriving Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem where residents are currently confronting the Israeli government's plan to forcibly demolish 86 of their homes in order to build an archeological park. Last week, I met Rabbi Arik Ascherman of Rabbis for Human Rights in front of a Silwan home that was recently demolished. Rabbi Ascherman told me the demolition order raises the question of whether Israel values rocks more than human beings. Fakhri abu Diab, one of the 1500 residents who will be forced into the streets by Israel's home demolitions, told me he avoids discussing with his children the impending destruction of their home because he has no means of allaying their fears.
Part One
Part Two
Despite Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's criticism of the demolitions, Israel has already bulldozed two homes. The survival of the remaining homes depends entirely on international pressure. But Silwan is only the tip of the iceberg. After spending a week on the West Bank, I concluded that the recognition by the U.S. and the West of a viable Palestinian state in partnership with Israel has never seemed more like a pipe dream.
Jewish settlement of the West Bank is being consolidated and expanded. Armed resistance by Palestinian groups lies dormant -- most fighters have been arrested or killed -- while those Palestinians who employ nonviolent means to resist the Israeli government's plan to divide and annex their land are being met with draconian and sometimes lethal force (I learned this last fact the hard way when I was teargassed while covering a non-violent Palestinian protest of the Israeli separation wall). The refugee camps are increasingly overcrowded and seethe with resentment of nightly Israeli raids that seem to accomplish nothing beyond antagonism. And the Palestinian Authority is viewed as a brutal collaborationist force while Hamas is still incipient.
You can see for yourself what I experienced on the West Bank in my two part video documentary for the Daily Beast, Bibi's Big Problem.
Two More Israeli Agents, Including Female, Arrested in Lebanon
Two More Israeli Agents, Including Female, Arrested in Lebanon
22/05/2009 The Israeli-Mossad spying networks continue to head towards collapse amid daily achievements by the Internal Security Forces (ISF) through the forms of arrests…
On Friday, the ISF-Information Branch arrested a woman identified as K.N., 28, on suspicion of spying for the Zionist entity. She was arrested in Marjayoun-Hasbaya, but she is from the southern region of the Shebaa Farms.
One day ago, police arrested another suspect in Rashaya overnight in connection with the Israel-linked espionage networks.
The man was only identified as Ziad.S., who hails from the southern town of Shebaa. He is in his 70s. Lebanese daily Al-Bairaq, however, identified him as Ziad Al-Saadi.
According to press reports, the new agent sold four days ago one of his cafés in Shebaa, perhaps for his intention to escape after feeling that he might be uncovered. Information Branch officers also searched his home and confiscated some equipment.
Meanwhile, Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar quoted a security official as saying that "all agents must know that we'll continue our work until dismantling the whole Israeli intelligence infrastructure in Lebanon."
"What we already achieved is not everything," the official emphasized.
Another Israeli Spy Arrested in Lebanon
23/05/2009 The daily arrests of Israeli spies and agents spread all over Lebanon continued on Saturday…
Indeed, the Lebanese Army arrested on Saturday morning another Israeli agent, named Jawdat H., from the Ibl El-Saki town, on suspicion of collaborating with the Zionist entity.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese authorities have reportedly released a woman and her brother in law who were arrested on suspicion of dealing with Israel one day earlier after finding out that the two suspects were innocent.
Indeed, evidence found in the woman's home in Shebaa later turned out to belong to her father who has been serving a jail sentence in Syria since 2006 for collaborating with Israeli intelligence. Investigations showed the two suspects were unaware of the nature of the evidence, a security source told Al-Manar.
In a separate development, security forces raided the home of Mustapha Said near Ain el-Helweh camp following his arrest Friday morning in al-Qassir village in Nabatiyeh on suspicion of spying for the Zionist entity. Said is the former brother in law of another suspect Nasser Nader who has been dubbed by investigators as one of the most valuable detainees in the espionage investigation.
Investigations showed that Said, along with Nader, was involved in the preparation for the murder of resistance leader Ghaleb al-Awali. Said and Nader were not members of the same ring but accidently ran into each other when the latter was inspecting the neighborhood where Awali lived in the southern suburbs.
Nader then informed the Israelis out of fear of being uncovered and was then told that Mustapha was also a collaborator. The two men continued their mission up until the execution of the murder, the daily said.
According to investigators, Nader was also responsible of monitoring one of the resistance's operations areas in the south during the 1980's and was behind the death of a large number of fighters after informing the Israelis of their positions. He was also responsible for the destruction of tens of buildings in the southern suburbs during the July 2006 war on Lebanon.
