NATO sheikh: Not welcomed in Palestine

Israel & Al Qaeda: A match made in hell!

FLC

"...  The bombing raids, unprovoked and illegal, were of course immediately supported by the US and British governments. Since Israel has illegally occupied Syria's Golan Heights for 46 years, perhaps the legitimacy of a few more air raids hardly merited serious consideration.
But it's only necessary to consider what the western reaction would have been if Syria, let alone Iran, had launched such an attack on Israel – or one of the Arab regimes currently arming the Syrian rebels – to realise how little these positions have to do with international legality, equity or rights of self-defence.
Israeli officials have let it be known that the attacks, launched from Lebanese airspace, were aimed at stockpiles of Iranian missiles bound for Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia resistance movement and governing party. They were not, it was said, intended as an intervention in Syria's civil war – but as a warning to Iran and protection against Hezbollah attacks in a future conflict.
That's not how it seemed to the Syrian rebel fighters on the ground, filmed greeting the attacks with cries of "Allahu akbar", unaware of who had actually carried them out. By bombing the Syrian army, which has recently made advances in some rebel-held areas, Israel is clearly intervening in the war.
The raids follow the public declaration by Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah last week that his fighters are supporting government forces inside Syria– which are also backed by Iran, Russia and China. It is Syria's role as the pivot of Iranian influence across the Middle East that has turned the Syrian war into a potential regional conflagration.
Having hedged its bets, Israel has now started to make clear it regards the prospect of Islamist and jihadist groups taking over from the Assad regime as less threatening than the existing "Syria-Iran-Hezbollah axis", as the Israeli defence ministry official Amos Gilad put it recently.
That has coincided with talk of creating an Israeli buffer zone inside Syria, while Israeli officials have been pushing claims that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons. Since Obama declared that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line", allegations of their use have become a crucial weapon for those demanding increased western intervention, in a bizarre echo of the discredited orchestration of the invasion of Iraq a decade ago.
That effort came unstuck this week when the UN investigator Carla Del Ponte reported that there were "strong concrete suspicions" that Syrian rebels had themselves used the nerve gas sarin. The claim was hurriedly downplayed by the US, though the rebel camp clearly has an interest in drawing in greater western intervention, in a way the regime does not....."

Hagel: US Strong Relation with Arab States to Ensure Israel’s Security

Local Editor

Chuck HagelUS Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, portrayed on Thursday Washington’s policies towards the Middle East developments, and stated that his country was enhancing the military capabilities of its Arab allies to confront the Iranian threat.
Speaking at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Hagel highlighted that America’s security interests in the Middle East included the security of the Zionist entity, stressing that its core principle is maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge to protect itself from regional threats.

The US secretary of defense considered that Iran’s support to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon “destabilized activities in the Persian Gulf”, and its “nuclear ambitions posed threat to the US, Israel, and nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council”.
He further noted that Al-Qaeda has been “substantially weakened in recent years,” while “affiliated terrorist groups like Al-Nusra Front are seeking new footholds in the region. Yet, he did not portray any fear from it.

US Core Principle Is to Maintain Israel’s Capacity to Defeat Threats from State or Non-State Actors

Hagel reassured that “America’s national security interests in the Middle East include the security of Israel, supporting our allies, fighting terrorism, preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, pursuing Middle East peace, playing a stabilizing role with our regional partners, and working to support democratic transitions in Yemen, North Africa, and ultimately in Syria.”

“The Department of Defense helps protect US interests through our military presence in the region, our defense cooperation, and our work to enhance the military capabilities of allies,” he added, pointing out that his latest Middle East tour around occupied Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, focused mainly  on this issue.

Consequently, Hagel said that “Israel is America’s closest friend and ally in the Middle East. During a series of meetings in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with a former Washington Institute fellow, Minister of Defense (Moshe) Ya’alon, President (Shimon) Peres, and Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, I conveyed our continued commitment to enhancing defense cooperation – which has reached unprecedented levels in recent years.”

“One of the core principles of US-Israel security cooperation is America’s commitment to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge – its capacity to defeat any threat or combination of threats from state or non-state actors,” he added, reiterating that "Israel is a sovereign nation and has the right to defend itself.”

The US official talked about high rocket and missile defense cooperation with the Zionist entity. However, he pointed out that “Israel’s security is further enhanced by America’s defense cooperation with other regional allies.”

US Relation with Arab States to Preserve “Israel’s” Security Interests, Most Important Partner is Egypt

“In my consultations with Israeli leadership, I emphasized that strong US security relationships with Arab nations – including Egypt and Jordan, and our partners in the Gulf – are not only in our strategic interests, they are also in Israel’s security interests, Hagel stated.

As he hinted that “among the most important of these relationships is our defense partnership with Egypt,” Hagel referred to “an important US military role in stabilization during Egypt’s revolution.”
“During my visit to Cairo, I met with President (Mohammad) Mursi and Minister of Defense (Abdul Fattah) Al-Sisi to affirm America’s continued commitment to our strategic partnership, and to express our continued desire to work together to achieve common security objectives,” the US official indicated.

According to Hagel, among the security objectives mentioned were ensuring the security of Egypt’s borders and the Sinai region, and maintaining the Camp David Peace Treaty with the Zionist occupation.

“Both President Mursi and Minister Al-Sisi underscored their commitment to the Camp David Peace Treaty and to improving cooperation on border security and the Sinai,” he stated.

Jordan another Key Partner in Region

Hagel stated that “the Kingdom of Jordan is another key US partner in the region,” and pointed out that “in my visit to Amman, I reassured to the Jordanians that the United States is committed to the stability of Jordan, and to deepening our close defense cooperation and joint contingency planning with the Jordanian military.”

Stating Washington’s interest in “enhancing Jordan’s border security and counter-chemical weapons capabilities,” he expressed Obama’s concern to support Jordanian “King Abdullah’s efforts to pursue political and economic reforms within Jordan.”

US Urging International Community to Apply Sanctions on Syria, Aid to Opposition Reached $ 510 Million

Hagel assured that his country has been “leading the international community in organizing and applying sanctions, and is the largest provider of humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.”
He referred to US Secretary of State John Kerry’s announcement in Rome that “the president has authorized an additional $100 million in humanitarian aid for the Syrian people, bringing our total humanitarian assistance to nearly $510 million,” stating that “the non-lethal” assistance was also handed to the Syrian “armed opposition”.

Enhancing Cooperative Defense Network in Gulf to Counter “Iranian Threats”

Hagel said the US was determined to “continue in its diplomatic efforts and international economic sanctions to pressure Iran into abandoning” the pursuit of its nuclear program.

“As you all know, President Barack Obama has made clear that our policy is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and he has taken no option off the table to ensure that outcome,” he added, indicating that this was the main “point during my discussions in the Gulf.”

“A key element of our efforts to counter Iranian threats is building a cooperative defense network – raising the military capabilities of our partners in the Gulf who share our commitment to regional security and our concerns about Iran and violent extremism on the Arabian Peninsula,” he added.
Hagel mentioned military agreements with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, adding that “other common efforts were made with Gulf States in areas such as missile defense, this new arrangement ensures that we are coordinating effectively against Iran and other shared security challenges.”

“US will Assist Nations that Want Transitions to Democratic Rule”

The US official signified that Washington’s “best hope for long-term stability relies on countries like Egypt, Libya, and Syria making transitions to democratic rule.”

He indicated that the US will "assist these nations in achieving these goals, and will remain engaged in helping shape the new order.”

S. Nasrallah: We Support Syrian Resistance, We’ll Receive Game-Changing Arms

Local Editor

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah declared readiness of Lebanese Resistance to receive any game-changing weapons the Syrian Arab Republic might offer, stressing that Resistance stands by the side of Syrian popular resistance until liberating the occupied Golan.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan NasrallahDuring a televised speech he delivered on the Al-Nour Radio silver jubilee ceremony held at Risalat Hall in Beirut on Thursday, Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that Syrian leadership prove its strength of nerve and its wise leadership that oversees the battle with the Zionists through a strategic mind, pointing out that this defiant and resistant axis has made achievements and toppled a lot of colonial schemes through steadfastness and prudence.

“We – the Resistance – declare we are ready to receive any game-changing weapons, and we are ready to possess and protect them, and use them to defeat the aggression against our people, our land and our holy places,” his eminence said.

Hezbollah Secretary General made it clear that the true goal behind the latest Zionist raids against Syria was to harm its capabilities, to remove it from the conflict equation against the enemy, and to tell the Syrians that continuing to supply Resistance with military aid will lead to their regime downfall.

However, Sayyed Nasrallah noted that Syria responded to the Zionist aggression by foiling all its goals through its persistent support to the Lebanese Resistance and opening the door to popular resistance in its occupied territories of Golan.

“Tell me about a single Arab regime or state of the supporters of the Arab Spring who have dared to offer the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine a rocket or a single bullet,” Sayyed Nasrallah stated.
Reiterating that Syria has long been a conduit for Iranian weapons bound for Resistance in Lebanon, his eminence went on to say that “everyone knows what Syria has offered to resistance movements, especially in Lebanon and Palestinian.”

“The same as Syria stood by Lebanon, we - the Resistance in Lebanon - declare that we will stand by the Syrian popular resistance that is aimed at liberating the Syrian Golan.”

Commenting on the Russian-U.S. talks on a political solution for the Syrian crisis, Sayyed Nasrallah said "it is shameful that the U.S. is being depicted as Syria's savior,” stating that Arabs are climbing the debris of Syria giving the Americans what they want, due to their assumption that Iran is besieged.
Turning to the Palestinian cause, the priority of Sayyed Nasrallah’s speech, his eminence indicated that Arab regimes are dealing with the Palestinians as if they are a historical burden, which they wanted to get rid of since long time but they didn’t have the courage to do so.

Hezbolah: 25th anniversary of al-Nour radio station“For those who want to preserve al-Aqsa Mosque and the Christians holy sites and for those who want to give back Jerusalem to the Palestinian people and to the Ummah, resistance is their only choice. The choice is neither the Arab League nor the U.N., the choice has always been the resistance,” Sayyed Nasrallah said.

"Today, the risks threatening the Palestinian cause are the land and the identity,” he added, stressing that recognizing the Jewish nature of the Occupied Land means the battle is over, and all what's happening in the region is helping the enemy to grab chances after the extreme state of horror it lived during the Arab Spring and peoples' awakening.

“Unfortunately we're a nation that wastes a lot of chances.”

“Palestinian people were aspiring that Arab Spring might make Arabs more adherent to their rights, but the scene of the Arab foreign ministers making a dangerous compromise, with the U.S. secretary of state sitting in the middle, indicates that the Palestinian cause is in danger.”

“Unfortunately, there are people who believe that priority is somewhere else. It is not the Al-Aqsa Mosque, but it is how to drag Syria and Iraq into war, and how to push Lebanon into the abyss,” Hezbollah Secretary General said.

Arabs are unwilling to pay for bread for the Sunni Muslims of Somalia dying of hunger or to aid the Syrian refugees in Lebanon or to give real support for the Jerusalemites to stay in their land, but they are willing to pay compensations for the Jews,” he added.

Sayyed Nasrallah expressed beliefs that what required from Arab regime “is a formal Arab recognition – and only a Palestinian one – of the Jewish nature of Israel, which poses cultural, humanitarian, economic, security and demographic threats.”

Praising the Jordanian Parliamentary stance regarding its vote on relations with the Zionist entity, Sayyed Nasrallah told the Palestinians that they won't find anyone to stand by their side other than those who have stood by them since years, noting that the Palestinians benefit from any serious efforts to achieve a political settlement in Syria and prevent its fall into the hands of the Takfiris, the Americans and the Zionists.

Touching on the Palestinian resistance factions, his eminence revealed that if a day to come when Palestinian brothers unfold what they whisper in private meetings, they will say that “no one offered support for us as offered by President Bashar al-Assad."

Addressing the Lebanese internal affairs, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed that national unity requires a real national partnership cabinet to be formed and the parliamentary elections to be held on time, reiterating Hezbollah’s commitment to the Orthodox Gathering proposal and the party’s refusal of political vacuum.

On the Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Syria’s Aazaz around a year ago, his eminence revealed that Hezbollah has done what should be done and things will take a positive course.
“Government must shoulder the rest of the file.”

Also on the rockets fired by Syrian insurgents on Lebanon and landed in Hermel northern region, Sayyed Nasrallah vowed that the party will address the issue “and God willing there will be a solution.”

Thursday ceremony commemorated the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Hezbollah's al-Nour radio station, which Sayyed Nasrallah said it has been committed to credibility and honesty along its course.
Hezbollah: al-Nour radio station emblem
“According to our experience, honesty is the power point of any psychological war we fought against the enemy.”

Thanking all workers at al-Nour for their steadfastness and faith, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the radio station was launched as part of the resistance course “with emerging experience, great hope for the future and self-confidence that we are capable of making victory.”
“The most serious dilemma faced by many of the world and Arab media is the lack of credibility, disinformation and fabrication of facts, as well as lying in politics, relations and news,” he said, stressing that the mission of media outlets is to report news without inventing or fabricating stories.

“Media of Resistance was able to help the Nation to steadfast, to indicate the right and defend Resistance against accusations of terrorism and subordination.”
“Media of Resistance will keep on performing this Jihadi duty along with all Resistance facilities looking confidently to victory,” Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah concluded.

Israel Rescues their Al-Qaeda Terrorists Friends From Syria

Fighters being treated in field hospitals and sent back to front lines

Israel is sending military vehicles into Syria to pick up wounded Al-Qaeda terrorists involved in the fight against the Syrian Army before patching them up and sending them back into battle, another startling example of how the Zionist state is working with its supposedly sworn enemies to topple President Bashar Al-Assad.

That’s a not a claim being made by Iranian or Syrian state media, it’s calmly admitted in a report by the staunchly pro-Israel DebkaFile.
“Israel has set up a large field hospital near the Tel Hazakah observation and military post on Golan which overlooks southern Syria and northern Jordan. There, incoming Syrian war wounded are vetted and examined by Israeli army medics who decide whether to patch them up and send them back, or judge them badly hurt enough for hospital care. The seriously hurt are moved to one of the the nearest Israeli hospitals in Safed or Haifa,” states the report.

The report notes that the wounded fighters are probably being rescued by unmarked “Israeli army vehicles” that are “entering Syria to pick up injured rebels.”

In addition to the latest information, an AFP report from March also documented how the IDF had set up a “military field hospital” at army outpost 105 in the Golan Heights in order to rescue and treat FSA fighters.

By treating and rehabilitating wounded FSA militants and Al-Qaeda terrorists, Israel is aiding the very same rebels who have burned Israeli flags in public and vowed to crush the Zionist regime once they are finished toppling Bashar Al-Assad.

Multiple reports now confirm that the primary frontline militants in Syria fighting against Assad’s forces are members of the Al-Qaeda group Jabhat al-Nusra which “killed numerous American troops in Iraq,” and is now leading western-backed rebel forces in Syria. After the organization was declared a terrorist group by the US State Department, 29 different US-backed Syrian opposition groups pledged their allegiance to al-Nusra.

The DebkaFile report admits that Jabhat al-Nusra fighters are now heavily concentrated, “in the 8 sq. km separation zone on the Golan” from where the Israeli military is rescuing them for medical treatment.

According to Egyptian and Jordanian intelligence sources, Israel’s air strike on Syria was this past weekend was also timed to precede an Al-Qaeda-led rebel offensive against President Bashar Al-Assad’s forces, who had been scoring major military victories up until that point.

A May 8 London Guardian report notes how Jabhat al-Nusra is “emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force fighting Bashar al-Assad’s regime,” and how droves of FSA fighters are now joining its ranks.

Attempts by the west to make a distinction between FSA rebels and Al-Qaeda terrorists in order to justify shipments of heavy weaponry are becoming increasingly discredited given the fact that Jabhat al-Nusra is now easily the most dominant fighting force, meeting “every day” with FSA rebels and training them how to build car bombs. As al-Nusra’s influence has grown, so have the number of atrocities, from sectarian murders, to beheadings, to terrorist attacks targeting schools and other civilian infrastructure.

Tel Aviv’s support for Al-Qaeda makes little sense until one accepts the fact that both the US and Israel routinely exploit the presence of Al-Qaeda militants in any given region as a pretext for military intervention, whether those militants are fighting on the same side, as in Libya and Syria, or on the opposite side as in Mali.

The United States and Israel have also armed and funded Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups in Iran to carry out bombings and assassinations for years.

NATO powers also openly armed and funded the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Libyan Islamic FIghting Group to topple Colonel Gaddafi in 2011, a policy that directly contributed to the assault on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi (which itself was likely a cover for clandestine arms shipments to Syrian rebels).

It was also recently revealed that the State Department hired Al-Qaeda-linked militants to “defend” the diplomatic mission in Benghazi that was later attacked. State Department officials who blocked efforts to help Americans under assault later tried to hide Al-Qaeda’s involvement in the attack.
Not only has Israel supported Al-Qaeda-led rebels in Syria, but back in 2002 Israel was caught actually creating an Al-Qaeda group in order to justify attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The west’s narrative in Syria, that the fight against Assad is an organic uprising of oppressed Syrians, has been completely decimated despite the best efforts of the establishment media to maintain the myth.

Now that it is becoming abundantly clear that the US, UK and Israel are directly supporting Al-Qaeda terrorists in order to achieve a long planned regime change, NATO powers are scrambling to arm the rebels before their last shreds of legitimacy are torn asunder.

Petulance on the High Seas: ADL Slams Stephen Hawking Over Boycott Decision

 By Richard Edmondson
Earlier this week renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking made a decision based upon conscience. That decision was to honor the academic boycott against Israel and to decline an invitation to attend the Presidential Conference, an event held each year in Israel that normally draws a prestigious crowd of attendees. However, instead of simply respecting Professor Hawking’s decision and leaving it at that—which would have been the mature, reasonable, adult response—supporters of the Jewish state, much like petulant adolescents, have gone into attack mode. The following press release was posted at the website of the Anti-Defamation League:

Stephen Hawking’s Decision to Withdraw From Israeli Conference
‘A Slap in the Face to Academic Freedom’

New York, NY, May 8, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today criticized the decision by British professor Stephen Hawking to withdraw from the Israeli Presidential Conference on political grounds, calling it “a slap in the face to academic freedom.”

In a letter to conference organizers, Dr. Hawking said he came to his decision after Palestinian academics urged him to comply with calls for an “academic boycott” of Israel.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Dr. Hawking has bought into the anti-Israel “boycott, divestment and sanctions” campaign, which relies on an abhorrent and false comparison of Israeli democracy to apartheid
.  It is sad that a man of Dr. Hawking’s immense intellect is unwilling to see the double standard and demonization which are the hallmarks of this anti-Israel movement.

The fact remains that the vast majority of academics and other public figures throughout the world do not succumb to the entreaties of a bigoted few.  Hawking has joined a relatively small group of closed-minded academics, entertainers and other public figures who show their lack of respect for academic freedom and the promotion of the free exchange of ideas.

Had Dr. Hawking gone ahead with his trip, he likely would have met many Israelis, including leading academics, who share his political views.  Instead, he has delivered a slap in the face to academic freedom.  We are heartened by the fact that so many other public figures continue to visit Israel and choose to engage and experience, rather than boycott, demonize and discriminate.

But it isn’t only the ADL. A Jewish rabbi, Abraham Cooper, in an op-ed piece for Fox News, casts Hawking as “highly unorthodox,” asserting that the physicist “caved to the prevailing virulent anti-Israel orthodoxy among the United Kingdom’s elite and announced he’ll boycott because of Palestinian protests.”

I’m not sure what UK “elite” Cooper is referring to here. Last time I checked, British Prime Minister David Cameron and his senior ministers were all uniformly pro-Israel, along with most of the British Parliament, and, unless I miss my guess, the royal family as well, but then defenders of the Jewish state often lapse into soliloquies of flawed logic.

As may be expected, flourishes of eternal Jewish victimization can also be detected in some of the attacks.

“I have a suggestion,” said a professor at the University of Haifa. “I suggest that the people of Israel send Hawking for a free trip on the Achille Lauro!!”

Petulance on the high seas indeed.

A writer at The Telegraph describes Hawking’s decision as “a sad display of partisanship,” while another at the Daily Mail calls it “shameful,” and if you go here you can read of scurrilous comments about the wheel-chair-bound physicist posted at social media sites.

Israel’s supporters are not particularly known for their grace and manners. Moreover, Hawking is a smart man. He would have known that that taking the step of honoring the boycott, a boycott that has the aim of bringing about an end to a brutal occupation, would make him a target of criticism. The fact that he chose to do so anyway speaks all the more eloquently for him.

Stop the War Meeting-Israel's illegal actions against Syria

Inline images 1
Stop the War bulletin | May 2013 no.1 | stopwar.org.uk

Within the last week, Israel has bombed Syria. Twice. The New York Times reported the bombing of Damascus as "more massive than anything the residents of the city...have witnessed during more than two years of war." The number killed is not known, but reports have put the figure at more than a hundred. Israel's bombing was not preceded by an attack on that country by the Syrian regime. Violating Lebanese airspace on the way, Israel's actions can only be seen as an act of war.
As the civil war in Syria spreads into the wider Middle East, so the Western powers beat the drums for war. Opinion polls show the majority of the British public (and even greater majorities in Middle Eastern countries) oppose the escalation of Western intervention in Syria. On Thursday, members of the Stop the War coalition delivered an open letter to Prime Minister David Cameron to Downing Street, urging the government to end its interventionist policy.

The letter begins:

Dear Prime Minister,

We are writing to express our alarm at the increasing intervention by the UK government in the civil war which is now taking place in Syria. We believe that the future of Syria is for the Syrian people alone to decide, and that your actions can only worsen the situation.

Stop the War coalition have called a public meeting in London to discuss the ongoing situation. Syria - Stop Western Military Intervention will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 21st May. The venue is the Khalili lecture theatre, SOAS, Russel Sq, London WC1H 0XG. Speakers include Professor Kamal Majid, Dr Issa Chaer, Jeremy Corbyn MP and Lindsey German. Free admission, all are welcome. Details on the website: http://bit.ly/11pmJty

Resistance Considers its Options: Limited Confrontation or Open War?

Resistance Considers its Options: Limited Confrontation or Open War?

Israel’s Sunday air strikes on military targets in Damascus has led to much speculation about the motives behind the attack and whether Syria – or its Iranian or Hezbollah allies – will respond in kind.

Many pro-regime voices called for an immediate Syrian response, but others in the opposition welcomed the operation as a humiliating blow to Damascus.

What Happened?
Four years ago, Israel adjusted its military posture toward the forces of resistance in the region by deciding that it will do all it can to prevent strategic, game-changing weapons from reaching Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Over the years, these weapons changed. At one point the Israelis talked about the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, then the focus shifted to long-range missiles with heavy payloads, or the more precise Iranian Fateh-110 missile. The most recent addition is chemical weapons.
The Israelis warned Damascus repeatedly through various diplomatic and security ch
annels to stop providing such weapons to the Lebanese Resistance. On a number of occasions, Tel Aviv sent information to a number of Arab and Western capitals, including pictures and documents, about Hezbollah-run missile factories inside Syria.

Despite repeated threats that included overflights and mock strikes along the Lebanese-Syrian border, the Zionist authorities did not dare carry out a direct attack on any of these facilities or Hezbollah’s many missile storage sites in Lebanon. And when Israeli generals tried to get permission for such an operation, politicians would always counter that this is not the time to enter into a confrontation with Lebanon.
What has changed over the past two years is Syria. The crisis erupted and drew in just about every major power in the world hijacking legitimate popular demands each for their own reasons.
Israel calculated that based on these developments – as they are not prepared for a major confrontation with Hezbollah and attacking Iran is becoming a distant dream – it is a good opportunity to change the rules of the game on its northern front with Syria.

The first step in this direction came with the January 30 attack on the Jurmana research facility near Damascus, a site widely known to have been set up to serve the military needs of the resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine. Sunday’s strike represents an escalation in this policy as it targeted areas related to the Syrian armed forces that also contained storage facilities for Iranian weapons destined for Hezbollah.

The target was, nevertheless, carefully selected so as not provoke a strong response from the other side. No Israeli official in their right mind believes that such a strike represents more than a small dent in Hezbollah’s arsenal, most of which is already in Lebanon.

After the attack, Israel behaved like a criminal awaiting punishment, sending messages in all directions that it had no interest in a war. The Zionist security establishment is still busy trying figure out exactly what the other side intends to do.

The Israelis have, however, calculated correctly that the other side is not in a position to open another front in addition to the global campaign being waged against them in Syria. This only confirms that Israel’s objective is not to spark another war but simply to take advantage of an opportunity to change the rules of engagement with its opponents.

The Coming War
Iran and Hezbollah may not be under any pressure to respond to Israel’s strike, but certainly many of Assad’s supporters are asking: why not reply?
The following considerations have to be taken into account:

1) The nature of the attack has put Hezbollah, Iran, and Syria in the same boat and therefore any decision to respond can only arise from an understanding after discussions among all three parties.

2) Syria and its allies understand that the priority today is the internal front. As long as Iran and Hezbollah are accusing the armed opposition of being in the Israeli camp, a blow to them is tantamount to a blow to the Zionists behind them.

3) Israel is not stupid enough to believe that such one-off strikes are enough to change the rules of engagement. A change of this sort requires more protracted confrontations like the ones that took place between the Resistance in Lebanon and Israel in the 1990s, which could easily spark a wider war, the extent of which no one can accurately predict.

Given these circumstance, we can conclude the following:

- Those who want an immediate response should look in the direction of Iran and Hezbollah. There are enough indicators on that front to suggest that there is no escaping some kind of reply.

- Whoever was hoping that the Israeli strikes would tip the balance in favor of the opposition should await the results of the coming battles, which promise to be more ferocious than the ones we’ve seen over the past four months.

- There are a growing number of developments that increasingly suggest that a wider war is on the horizon, the nature and timing of which depend on many factors.
Finally, it is important to point out that events in Syria no longer have any relation to something called a revolution; it is an armed insurgency by forces opposed to the Syrian state and all that it stands for. It is an act of great stupidity.
