Israel's air raid in Sudan demonstrated that Tel Aviv can perform operations far away and without tactical support of the US, a report says.
Citing unnamed Israeli security sources, Time magazine reported that the recent air strike on a 23-truck convoy in the Sudanese desert was carried out by Israeli fighter jets to "demonstrate Israel's intelligence capability and its willingness to mount operations far beyond its borders."
Israeli sources claimed that the attack was carried out to warn "Iran and other adversaries".
The report said while the Americans did not take part in the operation even tough they had been informed about the attack.
"The Americans were notified that Israel was going to conduct an air operation in Sudan, but they were not involved," a source said.
According to Time, the attack came after Israel's foreign intelligence agency Mossad was told of an alleged plan for arms delivery to Hamas during the 22-day offensive against the Gaza Strip.
"There was only one raid, and it was a major operation", which killed at least 50 people just outside Port Sudan, the reported added.
F-16 fighter-bombers conducted two runs on the convoy, while F-15 fighter planes circled above as a precautionary measure, according to the source.
Sudan has condemned the attack saying that the air raid targeted a convoy belonging to the country and it had nothing to do with Hamas.
The Time report comes amid ongoing Israeli threats to take out Iranian nuclear infrastructure militarily under the pretext that Tehran and its nuclear program pose a threat to the existence of Tel Aviv.
Iran says it only seeks to attain the civilian applications of the technology and it would not opt to violate the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
