DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Khaled Mashaal, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, stated Tuesday that the withdrawal of the Egyptian role opened the door for Turkey and Iran to extend their hands to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, stressing that his Movement would never allow others to use it as a tool.
“We should not blame others if their role extended, but we should blame ourselves if ours shrank,” Mashaal said in an interview aired on Orbit satellite channel.
“Yes, Turkey and Iran have their own interests, but Hamas has its own decision because it has strong institutions and diverse sources of support,” he added.
Explaining his Movement’s position towards the reconciliation paper, the Hamas political leader said that in late September, Egyptian intelligence director Omar Suleiman gave his Movement a copy of this paper and after studying it, there were some good observations that Suleiman positively respond to them, but in October, Hamas found that the final paper did not match the draft agreement.
The Hamas leader added that the Egyptian side refused to backtrack on the changes it made in its final reconciliation paper and insisted on Hamas signing the paper as it is.
