Israel urges Egypt to expedite construction of border wall

NAZARETH, (PIC)-- A senior Israeli official has called on the Egyptian authorities to expedite the building of the underground steel wall along the borders with Gaza Strip.

Reuters quoted the unidentified official as saying that the Egyptians were working on the project, adding that he hoped the work would be completed by the end of the year.

The 20 meters deep steel wall along with an accompanying security system would hopefully terminate smuggling into Gaza, he said.

The wall when completed would tighten the siege on Gaza that has been in effect for the past four years.

Palestinians dug tunnels to provide the inhabitants with food and other consumer goods, which are in scarcity due to the Israeli siege and the restrictions on movement of goods and people imposed by Cairo at the Rafah crossing that has been closed for most of the time over the past four years.
