Danny Rubinstein : Siege failed in toppling Hamas

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)--
The Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip did not succeed in toppling the rule of Hamas and restore the rule of Mahmoud Abbas, the former PA chief, an Israeli writer said on Monday.
Writing in the economic supplement of Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot, Danny Rubinstein said that it was clear that the army could not topple Hamas using force.
He said that it would be difficult to return Abbas to the Strip "on an Israeli tank", adding that Israel resorted to siege as the only means to end Hamas's rule.

Rubinstein said that Israel and the West were trying to improve the conditions in the West Bank so that the Palestinians in Gaza would understand that Abbas's rule would bring them economic prosperity and hence revolt against Hamas and topple it by force.

The writer acknowledged that there was no imminent economic collapse in Gaza and the siege of the enclave was still far from achieving its target.
