Ukraine: The waiting game

By Pepe Escobar

Everything one needs to know about mediocre political elites allegedly representing the "values" of Western civilization has been laid bare by their reaction to the referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk.

The referendums may have been a last-minute affair; organized in a rush; in the middle of a de facto civil war; and on top of it at gunpoint - supplied by the Kiev NATO neo-liberal neo-fascist junta, which even managed to kill some voters in Mariupol. An imperfect process? Yes. But absolutely perfect in terms of graphically depicting a mass movement in favor of self-rule and political independence from Kiev.

This was direct democracy in action; no wonder the US State Department hated it with a vengeance. [1]

Turnout was huge. The landslide victory for independence was out of the question. Same for transparency; a public vote, in glass ballot boxes, with monitoring provided by Western journalists - mostly from major German media but also from the Kyodo News Agency or the Washington Post.

What should come after the Donetsk People's Republic proclaimed itself a sovereign state, and asked Moscow to consider its accession into Russia, is not secession, nor outright civil war, but a negotiation.

That's clear by the Kremlin's measured official reaction: "Moscow respects the will of the people in Donetsk and Lugansk and hopes that the practical realization of the outcome of the referendums will be carried out in a civilized manner."

The cautious tone is also reflected by the Kremlin urging the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to help broker the negotiation.

Yet once again, there's concrete proof that the NATO neo-liberal neo-fascist junta does not want to negotiate anything. Farcical "acting" President Oleksandr Turchynov labeled the exercise in direct democracy a "farce, which terrorists call the referendum"; and Washington and Brussels branded it "illegal".

And all this after the Odessa massacre; after the deployment of neo-nazi paramilitaries disguised as a "National Guard" (the goons US corporate media calls "Ukrainian nationalists"); dozens of CIA and FBI agents on the ground; plus 300 of the inevitable Academi - former Blackwater - mercenaries. What else to expect when the current Ukrainian Secretary for National Security is neo-nazi Andriy Parubiy, the previous commander of the Maidan's "self-defense forces" and a cheerleader of World War II nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera.

Banderastan - with its remix of 1980s Central American-style death squads - doesn't do referendums; they'd rather burn to death ethnic Russian civilian "insects" who dare to occupy buildings.

So this is the key message of the referendums. We reject the Kiev NATO neo-liberal neo-fascist junta. It's an illegal "government" of putschists. We are not "pro-Russian" separatists. We don't want to secede. What we want is a unified, federal and civilized Ukraine, with strong autonomous provinces.

R2P, anyone?
The Empire of Chaos wants - what else - chaos. Crucially, the Empire of Chaos now blatantly supports the deployment of an "army against their own population"; this was strictly verboten - punishable by NATO bombs or NATO-enabled jihad - in Libya and Syria, but now is just the new normal in Ukraine.

In Libya and in Syria - they tried three times at the UN - this would be the ultimate pretext for R2P ("responsibility to protect"). But in Ukraine the "terrorists" - Dubya-era terminology included - are the population, and the good guys are the Kiev neo-nazi militias. US ambassador to the UN and top R2P cheerleader Samantha Power exceeded all her previous levels of batshit craziness when she depicted the NATO junta onslaught against civilians as "reasonable" and "proportional", adding that "any of our countries" would have done the same in face of such a threat.

Berlin, for its part, wants, tentatively, to go the diplomatic way, although there's a clear split between stony Atlanticists and German captains of industry - who have identified clearly how Washington is aiming no holds barred to destroy the Russo-German economic synergy. The Empire of Chaos's game is to erect a wall between them, manifested in practice by a Russian "invasion". It's true that Moscow could easily pull a Samantha and invoke R2P to protect Russians and Russophones in Ukraine. But chessmaster Putin knows better than to invent a new Afghanistan in his western borderlands.

For Berlin all that matters is the economy. Germany will grow by 1.9% at best in 2014. With 6,200 German businesses in Russia and over 300,000 German jobs depending on two-way trade, American-style sanctions are beyond counter-productive, although Russophobia and Cold War 2.0 hysteria remains somewhat rampant.

Paris, for instance, has seen the writing on the wall. The US$1.66 billion contract to sell two Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia will go ahead, as Paris diplomats admitted the cancellation - in terms of penalties and lost jobs - would hurt France much more than Russia.

Over a month ago, on April 10, Putin sent a crucial letter to the 18 heads of state (five of them outside of the EU) whose countries import Russian gas via Ukraine. He was more than explicit; Moscow could not by itself keep financing the about-to-default Ukrainian economy. Between discount after discount and failing to impose penalty after penalty, since 2009 Moscow has subsided Kiev to the tune of an astonishing $35.4 billion. Europeans, Putin wrote, would also have to come to the table.

That spectacular nullity, outgoing European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso, although agreeing a dialogue is necessary, answered that Gazprom's new rule of only allowing gas to flow to Ukraine if paid in advance was "worrying". As if any European energy major would gladly dismiss unpaid bills.

A neutral, Finlandized Ukraine would finish off for good the current mess. It's just a matter of waiting for the NATO neo-liberal neo-fascist junta to go broke, and frozen to death.

How much do Americans bear responsibility for the actions of their governments?

Your hiding place: The effect of faraway mass murders on your ability to dream

This was originally written by John Kaminski.

It’s impossible to maintain your health in a society for which you feel contempt and shame. The guilt of living in such a society ruins your life, pollutes it, taints it. You can delude yourself for a time, for years, even, and think you can isolate yourself from the world, indulge yourself in your preferred pastimes, console yourself with platitudes that you can’t control the world and never could, but the rot eventually overtakes you, infects your whole life with embarrassment that you are living in the country whose underlying principle is ruthless murder and deception. Among other things, this means that everything you tell your children is a lie, and that humans are savage animals who construct all these phony rationalizations about morality and compassion which are nothing but self-deceiving lies. Eventually, if you possess either a mind or a conscience, these things catch up with you in the most disturbing ways.

Two weeks later, my mind is still vibrating from the news that an Israeli special operations squad, doing the bidding of America’s faithless leadership, helped to lure Ukrainian citizens into a building in Odessa, and not only trapped them in there and killed them, but poured a chemical over their heads and faces, so that they were burned to death while still alive, as their bodies found later were only burned above the waist.

So as landmark events in American history, this is right up there with drones butchering wedding parties in Afghanistan and murdering groups of teens in Yemen, with kidnapping and massacring hundreds of children in Syria, with annihilating 40,000 Libyans and murdering (and raping) their longtime leader in the streets, and the sordid abuses at Guantanamo, in which thousands of Muslims have been arrested and tortured for crimes that the people doing the arresting know they have committed themselves, making the whole operation a travesty of the lowest order. Not to mention all those other countries in which the U.S. takes other people’s lives for the benefit of no one except the very rich Jews who run America.

If you’re an American, you’re responsible for this. You have allowed all these things to happen and, very likely, never said a word about them. You need to distract yourself with whatever you can to avoid thinking about these things lest they tell you what kind of person you really are, a portrait no one can really acknowledge given the profound ugliness of its actual nature.

About a decade ago, when the U.S. began its policies of torture and rendition to countries with no laws against treating people illegally, practically nobody batted an eyelash. Everybody was either distracted by medications or anesthetized by trivial pursuits. Nobody in Congress voted against it, that’s for sure. So ever since then, we have been torturing people accused of crimes WE KNOW they did not commit. And this is what the American legal system has become, a kangaroo court of the worst possible kind, in which the guilty rich are forever immune from prosecution and innocent poor are automatically guilty of crimes they did not commit.

It must be that the treasonous dupes in charge of the U.S. government are under orders to ignite World War III at all costs and in any way possible, without regard for anyone except their own perverted friends and relatives.

The better part of the world’s population, as the more astute among us realize, goes to sleep hungry, surrounded by garbage and excrement, at constant risk from vermin and other more disreputable life forms who are all just trying to stay alive. We here in the Fat City known as America lord it over everyone with our socially responsible and politically correct concerns, which make us feel like we really care, but in reality we’re just hiding from the light like the poorest pauper, wanting to live through the night for another day but dreading what we will find when the Sun comes up.

No matter how high or low our footing in reality appears to be, we all have our checklists to convince ourselves we’re relatively affluent. For some it’s an unwrinkled cigarette butt on a sidewalk; for others an imported espresso topped with a dash of coconut cream to titillate our tastebuds. But we’re all swimming up the same stream. And no matter how much we convince ourselves that the condition of the water is much better in our neighborhood, in reality it’s pretty much the same everywhere no matter where you live; that is to say, polluted and getting worse, no matter how much the bottle it comes in might cost.

My friend the Rebel of Oz urges me to more upbeat in my philippics about our decaying society. Maybe it’s my age, but I find it hard to be upbeat about Armageddon. It’s not that I can’t laugh at my quixotic self. I see the lunatic hypocrisy in my urging everyone to be responsible when I have lived a thoughtless life of reflexive ignorance. When I saw some vibrant teenagers in a parking lot smoking cigarettes the other day I had to resist the impulse to rush up to them and explain the earthquakes that were happening inside my lungs having just quit after fifty years of manic poison sucking. But I held my tongue. Along the way I have reluctantly learned we can’t control everything.

Also along the way I have learned something even more important, as I recently explained to my friend Digger, he of the thoughtful chants from the English countryside.

I spent most of my life thinking how unlucky I was. Now I find myself able to cope with both dogmatists and skeptics, with a firm sense of both the beauty and rightness of life. Humanity came unglued by believing in the individual, who consistently became corrupt and eventually ruined the planet. By truly believing that working for each other made the most sense, we could have saved the place. But by trying to defeat death, rather than accept its inevitability in the scheme of things, we brought it to us more quickly and needlessly. Humans deserve to go extinct. They have blown the greatest opportunity ever presented. So we have no choice but to soldier on, to keep pointing this out, so that if any vestige of our confused civilization survives the coming maelstrom, it will be this. If we don’t live up to how bright our lights can truly shine, we don’t deserve to survive. And I think that’s the rule of every living thing. Knowing this makes me think I’m luckier than any person I know.

Of course, that’s the dim view. Per the Rebel’s advice, I must find a way to make that observation more upbeat. Still, I can’t think very long about the necessity of making mass murder and the destruction of all life on this planet a cheery party topic.

But we can’t get away from the one thing that prevents us from righting our ship and living happy and satisfying lives. That would be the crushing weight of lies that assails our lives and affects us all. It seriously affects our ability to dream, and makes us dwell unduly on our fault, rather than our possibilities.

And I’m not just talking about the typical government lies; I’m talking about the lies everyone tells themselves about how everything’s going to be just fine if we just tell the truth and keep our chins up. It ain’t happenin’, sports fans.

You know that old saying about how every day they take another bite? Well, I’m here to tell you that the whole carcass is almost gone. And of course, that’s what people don’t want to hear.

Just as it now appears that the media events known as Sandy Hook, Aurora and Boston Strong involved no actual murders or genuine terrorists, but only police state actors trying to scare the public into giving up their guns and letting cops invade their homes without warrants, so do the use of Al-Qaeda operatives in Syria and Libya fighting on the side of the Western powers indicate that the Arab terrorists blamed for the 9/11 false flag were actually fictional representations of boogeymen whom the government wants us to fear so that they may “protect” us with their endless rounds of shock and awe genocide against the hapless peasants whose resources the Washington and Wall Street perps want to steal for themselves.

All these things make it extremely difficult to maintain the belief that life itself is an unfathomable wonderland of joy and beauty that in all the universe cannot be matched for the exquisite and boundless happiness it can bring us.

Be careful what you tell your children about all this. The teenage suicide rate is already way too high. Better to tell them the rarest type of human is a leader who doesn’t take the bribe, which is the only way we’ll ever get out of this mess we’re in.

A word from Vidrebel: I do not believe we have much time left. The current American regime has an expiration date and it is not far off. The trick is to not go down with it. I see one of two possible exits: A US military coup or Divine Intervention. I do not always agree with John but then you probably do not always agree with me.

No Fly Zone over Benghazi

ED NOTE:  On March 21, 2011, Sabir Nureddin (A "Progressive" Libyan Traitor  wrote: The West is doing the right thing in Libya

"A few moments ago France, the United States, Britain and other NATO countrieslaunched air and cruise missile strikes against Libyan dictator Mu’ammar Gaddafi’s military installations, in implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.", he started
The NATO war on Libya war on "is not about oil or money" he claimed.
"I say this as an anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist, progressive pan-Arab nationalist. And it is from this vantage point that I witness with dismay our friends and natural allies, from the anti-war movement and George Galloway in the UK to  Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales and Daniel Ortega in Latin America, condemn the military action against Gaddafi as an imperialist plot whose aim is to seize Libyan oil." he added
On September 17, 2013, the same "progressive Pan-Arab" bastard is dreaming that the NATO would intervene again: Only an international force can save Libya
"It is time for the UN Security Council to bite the bullet, invoke Chapter VII of the UN Charter and immediately dispatch a stabilization force to Libya with a mandate to crush the armed militias by force".

Until the Murder of Kadhafi,Nureddin was the "reliable" source for Gordon Duff who wrote : AMERICA MUST ATTACK GADDAFI NOW
Duff rejoiced the murder of Khaddafi. He asked: What Time is It? - click the link and read it commented.

And he, Duff, told his readers how his well known"independent journalist" was present. He has worked for years in support of human rights projects around the world." "was commanding a unit -hand-picked squad that had been tracking, had been hunting  Gaddafi for weeks."

Read the story as told by Mr. Duff Here, and my comment here.

Duff was not alone supporting the Zionist-Nato's war on Libya, there were many such as Ex-Palestinian Marine Veteran" SAMI JADALLAH who always condemned “terrorist” acts committed by both Israelis and Palestinians", and the Lady who dared to call the well known Human rights activist, Franklin Lamb, "the so-called human rights activist".
There is also the Zionist Pundit who mocked Hugo Chavez saying:

"HAVE YOU NO SHAME MR. PRESIDENT? I USED TO BE A STRONG SUPPORTER OF YOU, BUT NO MORE!

SUPPORT OF BLOOD-SOAKED TYRANTS MAKES A MOCKERY OF YOUR POPULIST CREDENTIALS."

BTW,  Mr. Lamb, the "so-called activist" returned from Libya with a sniper's bullet in his leg, while the handicapped analysts were sitting on their assess behind their laptops.

However, after the "liberation" of Libya from Kadhaffi, and after Hillary came and saw, >Gordon, and the lady of VT, stopped reporting on Libya and their "reliable journalist" vanished from VT.

May they have
realized their mistakes, they changed the course are are standing firm against the Global war on Syria, and out of sudden the, DR. Lamb, the "so-called human rights activist" has become the VT reliable source in Syria.

  • Libya Army Declares no Fly Zone over Benghazi
  • Local Editor

The Libyan army imposed a no fly zone over Benghazi Saturday in a direct challenge to a retired general who has been using air power to press a campaign against extremist militants there.

Khalifa Haftar, who lived in exile in the United States before returning home to lead ground forces in the 2011 uprising that toppled Moamer Gaddafi, heads what he calls a "National Army".

On Friday his paramilitary force, backed by warplanes and helicopters, pounded Islamist militiamen in Libya's second city and fought pitched battles with the ex-rebels.

Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani denounced Haftar's forces as "outlaws" and called on all parties to observe restraint.

"The operation will continue until Benghazi is purged of terrorists," Haftar told Libya Awalan television.

Armed forces chief of staff Abdessalam Hadallah al-Salihin has denied any army involvement in the Benghazi clashes, although he admitted that some officers and army units had defected to join Haftar.

Later Haftar spokesman Colonel Mohammad Hijazi called on people living in the western Benghazi district of Guwersha and the southern one of Sidi Fradj to evacuate their homes.

He did not say if this was the prelude to attacks on those neighborhoods, which are known to be bastions of the Islamists.

The army's high command upped the ante by declaring all of Benghazi and its suburbs a "no fly zone until further notice," state-run Lana news agency said.

"All military planes flying over the city will be shot down by army units... and units of the revolutionaries (ex-rebels)," it said.

But it was not clear if the army has the means to carry out its threat, which came as local sources said mediation was underway to try and prevent new fighting in Benghazi.

The health ministry said 37 people were killed and 139 wounded in Friday's clashes in Benghazi, cradle of the revolution that toppled and killed Gaddafi.

A precarious calm reigned in the port city Saturday.

The death toll from clashes in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi has risen to 43 from 19 and more than 100 people had been wounded, a Health Ministry official said on Saturday.
Fighting broke out on Friday between irregular military forces and Islamist militants.
Residents said the situation was quiet on Saturday, while a retired Libyan general vowed to press a campaign to free Benghazi of "terrorist groups."
"The operation will continue until Benghazi is purged of terrorists," Khalifa Haftar told the broadcaster Libya Awalan of the country's second city, where the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi erupted in February 2011.
A precarious calm reigned in Benghazi after a deadly day that saw Haftar's forces target Islamist militiamen, using both ground and air power.
Local sources said mediation efforts were under way to try to ensure combat did not break out again.
Early Friday, Haftar unleashed his forces on former rebel Islamist groups, vowing to rid Benghazi of a "terrorist" scourge.
The violence came weeks after the government in Tripoli acknowledged for the first time the existence of "terrorist groups" in Libya and said it was mobilizing against them.
Haftar heads a group calling itself the "National Army" which launched "a large-scale operation to flush terrorists out of Benghazi," spokesman Mohammed al-Hijazi said on Friday.
"This is not a civil war. It's an operation against terrorist groups," added Hijazi, who like Haftar was an officer in Gaddafi's army before defecting.
Haftar's forces pounded former rebel groups in the city, focusing in particular on Ansar Sharia, an organization designated by the United States as a terrorist group, according to the army.
The regular amy denied any involvement in Friday's clashes, and the government condemned the operation.

America’s Disgraced Hawks Turn to Middle East Plan B

Posted on  by michaellee2009
“The makers of these policies, past and future, are still present in the center of decision making. They have decided to further invest in their failed experiments, modifying their tactics by setting out a new U.S. approach to the region, which has already been set in motion. In practical terms this will lead to elevated U.S. dominance by immersing the region in decades-long wars …”
The new U.S. approach is based on the following set of rules:

  • Unleash natural contradictions, religious, national, ethnic and sectarian
  • Incite divisions and separation without any regard to the borders delineated by the countries that emerged victorious from WWI, and even to the countries that emerged as victors of the Cold War
  • Don’t strain U.S. diplomacy by focusing on problems that cannot be resolved and offer superficial solutions
  • Create a balance of power that ensures a continuous state of war, provided that such wars remain within limits and don’t spread or threaten the that balance
  • Play down the subject of spreading democracy in the region, because that threatens the stability of allied countries. Since each and every election will be in favor of the trending religious authorities, Muslim or Christian. The election results invariably confirm that the main and dominant affiliation is religious rather than national
  • Replace market control of the oil industry with military control to prevent powers like China and Russia from gaining greater control over oil resources
  • Fill the U.S. military void in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Gulf, with an invisible American presence protected by long-term agreements with governments and close ties with local militaries in these countries, which keeps both armies and central governments enfeebled
  • Maintain permanent military strike forces in central Asia, Turkey, and Europe, sufficiently strong to strike any enemy or adversary, or “quasi-friend” jeopardizing the “natural” balance of power
  • Following its invasion of Baghdad, having recognized the immense moral and diplomatic price it paid with its disregard for international law, Washington was obliged to beg the United Nations to give it cover. Accordingly, Washington will, through fraud and misinformation, use international law to achieve its purposes. If that proves impossible, it will resort to unilateral economic, diplomatic, legal, and technological sanctions
  • Depend on the cover by acting under the umbrella of international forces, and when that isn’t feasible, resort to the use of NATO acting under an international mandate, as was the case in Afghanistan.

They said leave .. leave .. leave .. leave

Translation of the Arabic song about Nakba:
Leave, leave,  strangers came from nowhere and said .. leave .. leave
They broke in my house, killed my son, raped my wife and they said ..leave
They carved bitterness on my face, walked on my body, planted a bullet in my heart, erected a tent for me .. and they said .. leave
I said I will stay a giant a deep wound embracing my land
And I l walked off the door of my nation .. my nation was asleep
I was left alone, and my nation was dreaming
They came from nowhere when my nation was asleep
They said leave .. leave .. leave .. leave
