Syria and Iran affirm solidarity with resistance

"To support the Palestinian resistance is a humanitarian and popular obligation"

"Syria and Iran are united in supporting the Palestinian resistance," Ahmaadinejad said in a joint news conference with President Bashar Assad in the Syrian capital. Referring to Israel he stated "they've attacked Gaza, killing people in their own land and massacring women and children ... and yet it's the Palestinians they accuse of terrorism."

Regarding the continuing US military presence on Iran's borders the Iranian president said "they weren't invited in. They're unwelcome visitors who should leave Afghanistan and the borders of Pakistan."

For his part Assad reaffirmed the alliance between Syria and Iran, which he said was "built on shared principles and interests."

"We agreed to support reconciliation in Iraq and look forward to the departure of the last foreign soldier," he declared.

On Monday, the Obama regime rejected Assad's proposals for opening talks with Hamas and Hizbullah, saying the two groups had to renounce violence first.

Acting assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs Jeffrey Feltman is due to leave for the Syrian capital on Wednesday on his second visit this year. Feltman assisted Martin Indyk in the sham peace negotiations under Clinton in 2000. Feltman applauded Syria’s retreat from Lebanon after the Cedar revolution as a significant victory and said Iran and Syria have attempted to undermine Lebanon’s democracy, a strategy, Feltman says, that is "destined to fail." Feltman is fiercely critical of the "terrorist" group Hezbollah, which he views as a threat to democracy.

Ahmadinejad also met with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal during his Damascus visit.
