Israel Criticizes Erakat-Mottaki Unprecedented Meeting in Egypt

19/07/2009 Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat met Iran's foreign minister in Egypt in the first such talks since the “1993 Oslo accords”, a senior Palestinian official told AFP on Sunday. "Saeb Erakat met with Manouchehr Mottaki in Sharm el-Sheikh three days ago" on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement's (NAM) summit in the Egyptian resort, the official said on condition of anonymity.

"They discussed the internal Palestinian situation and the need for successful negotiations between Hamas and Fatah," he said, referring to the two main Palestinian factions. The two men also discussed "the need for a balance between Fatah and Hamas, the need for support of dialogue (between the two groups)... regional conditions and how to strike a balance in support between Hamas and Fatah," he added.

A senior Israeli official roundly criticized Erakat's meeting with Mottaki, saying "it appears the Palestinian side has no qualms about meeting the most extremist and violent enemies of peace."
