'No Matter How Long It Takes, Unity Gov't Will Be Formed'
24/07/2009 Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem played down optimism that a deal on government formation was imminent, saying conditions were not yet right.
"Optimism just does not sound right given that circumstances, both internally and externally, are not yet ripe for the establishment of a government," Sheikh Qassem told Lebanese daily As-Safir on Friday.
His eminence pointed that Syrian-Saudi contacts have so far failed to produce a pact that could be a "motive" for the formation of the government.
Sheikh Qassem stressed, however, that "no matter how long it takes, eventually formation of a government will take place."
"The ball is now in the hands of the Prime Minister-designate (Saad Hariri)," Sheikh Qassem believed.
His eminence said the opposition is looking forward to a "courageous decision" from Hariri to strike a deal on a new Cabinet "that, in itself, would serve as a guarantee to all."
"Responsibility now falls on his (Hariri's) shoulders to convince his allies in March 14 (forces). We believe that MP Walid Jumblatt could play a vital role in helping out with this," Sheikh Qassem added.

Sfeir Rejects Unity Gov't as Christians Revive Reconciliation
23/07/2009 Once again, Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir rejects the principle of "national unity" in the Lebanese cabinet…
Indeed, while Prime Minister-Designate Saad Hariri was continuing efforts to reach a "partnership" ministerial formula in which the loyalty and the opposition can be truly represented, the Maronite Patriarch didn't hesitate to "reject" once again the whole principle of "partnership."
According to Patriarch Sfeir, the opposition's role should be limited to the opposition and therefore, it shouldn't take part in the cabinet which should be formed by the parliamentary majority alone. The guaranteeing third in the cabinet, or what Sfeir prefers to call as veto power, is against democracy in his view.
The Maronite Patriarch reiterated his old slogan that the state is like a carriage being pulled by two horses, one forward and another backward. "This is why the state is not holding together," he said.
Sfeir's comments came after a spiritual summit held between the Maronite Patriarch and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim in the Monastery of 'Our Lady of Balamand.'
Hazim, for his part, called on the various political leaders to "contribute to building a strong state." He criticized any "obstacles put in the way of making progress in the life of the Lebanese."
Sfeir's comments came, however, as the Maronite League headed by Joseph Tarabay was holding a meeting to give fresh momentum to the inter-Christian reconciliation process.
Representatives from the Lebanese Forces, Phalange Party, National Liberal Party, Marada Movement and Free Patriotic Party took part in the meeting with no clear agenda.
Ahead of the meeting, FPM delegate Alain Aoun told Lebanese daily As-Safir that he will take part in the meeting "based on the grounds that the problem with our foes is political and not personal."
Marada representative Youssef Saade, in turn, said he has been informed by the Maronite League that the objective behind reviving the meeting was aimed at activating the association's activities, adding that it is unlikely to achieve a qualitative leap in the issue of Christian reconciliation. "Channels, however, remain open between us and Kataeb," Saade said.
Lebanese Forces sources, meanwhile, confirmed a representative of LF chief Samir Geagea will participate in the meeting. He voiced willingness to open a new page in Christian-Christian relations under Bkirki's patronage.
MP Antoine Zahra has also revealed that a meeting is likely to take place between Geagea and Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Franjieh.

One month ago I said Fateh is cracking, the cracks are so clear now, and it is Fateh rejecting the Unity Government.
