Clashes in Libyan capital Tripoli kill at least one

A clash erupted in Libya's capital, Tripoli, between a militia and residents on Sunday, killing at least one person.

The fighting involved a powerful militia from Zintan in Libya's western mountains and armed residents of a Tripoli neighborhood once loyal to ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The well-equipped fighters from Zintan are one of many militias that operate outside government control.

Zintan rebel commander Mohammed el-Rebay said one of his fighters was killed Sunday as the two sides fired automatic rifles at each other.

The clashes took place in Tripoli's Abu Selim neighborhood, a pro-Gaddafi stronghold.
The opposition took control of the city in August and later captured and killed Gaddafi.
After Tripoli fell, the Zintan rebels took over a school in the district and converted it into a military base.

Elsewhere Interpol issued an alert on Sunday seeking the arrest and extradition of Muammar Gaddafi's former intelligence chief at Libya's request.

Abdullah al-Senussi was detained in Mauritania on Friday after being on the run since the fall of the dictator last August.

Libyan authorities may have requested the red notice in an attempt to ensure they take custody of the man accused of attacking civilians during the uprising against Gaddafi last year and planning the 1989 bombing of a French airliner.

The International Criminal Court and France have also said they want to prosecute Senussi, and it is unclear where he will be tried.

Interpol defines a red notice as an alert "to seek the arrest or provisional arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition." The subjects of red notices are considered to be on the France-based organization's most-wanted list.
