President al-Assad: Successes of Iraq and Syria contributed to curbing terrorism spread دومينو السياسة | عمران الزعبي ، وزير الاعلام السوري ~ رانيا الذنون | الاخبارية السورية

President Bashar al-Assad lauded Tuesday the successes made by the people and armed forces of Iraq and Syria against the terrorist organizations.

Those successes, he said, have contributed to curbing the spread of terrorism, adding that further consultation and coordination between Baghdad and Damascus will give a boost to these successes.

The need for this mutual coordination in order to meet the terror dangers facing the two countries and the entire region and world as well was chief among the issues that figured during a meeting that brought the President together with Iraq’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

President al-Assad said it is yet of great importance to have a real international will to grapple with terrorism and face up to the countries backing it.

Al-Jaafari, for his part, stressed that Iraq stands by the Syrian people and will continue backing up their steadfastness in return for Syria’s ever “honorable” position towards the Iraqi people.

He sounded a confident note on the prospects of the strategic relations between Iraq and Syria, saying they will continue to develop in all areas.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Bouthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad, Assistant Foreign Minister Hamed Hassan and Iraq’s Ambassador in Damascus Alaa al-Jawadi.

In the same context, the Iraqi Foreign Minister and al-Moallem held a meeting in which they discussed the situation in the region and the terrorist threats their countries are faced with.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari met Tuesday with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the first visit by a senior Baghdad official since Syria's conflict began in 2011.

Jaafari told a press conference at Damascus airport that he met with Assad on Tuesday morning and held talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid Moallem.

"This is something that everyone must be committed to doing," Jaafari said in a joint press conference with Moallem before leaving Damascus.

“It is odd to have any neighboring country feeling at ease with terrorism that kills children and is indiscriminate towards people,” Jaafari added.

Moallem, for his part, said Syria and Iraq stand “in the same trench” against terrorism.

“Whenever Iraq is okay, Syria is okay too, and that’s why we are deeply confident that the Iraqi leaders have never spared any efforts to support Syria and help break the siege imposed on it,” he added.

Commenting on statements made by the Jordanian Information Minister that Amman is training Syrian tribes on the Jordanian territory, Moallem said the statements did not come up with anything new, “except that they prove what we have been saying about the existence of training camps for terrorists in Jordan.”

In June 2014, Damascus announced readiness to coordinate with Baghdad in order to face the threat posed by the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group, operating in both countries.
