15/06/2009 Iran's supreme leader Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei has told defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi to pursue his complaints over the election through legal means, state television said on Monday.
Imam Khamenei has told the top election supervisory body to examine Mousavi's complaints, state television added.
Mousavi lodged a formal protest with the Guardians Council calling for it to annul the result of Friday's presidential election which he lost to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, complaining of vote-rigging.
"The Guardians Council has been advised to precisely examine the letter," state television quoted Imam Khamenei as telling Mousavi during a meeting on Sunday. "In previous rounds some people followed matters through the
Guardians Council as it is the legal reference body in these issues and such matters should naturally be pursued legally in this round," his eminence told Mousavi.
Imam Khamenei also told Mousavi to pursue his complaints over the election through legal means and settle the issue calmly, the television said.
Mousavi’s campaign website said the he will appear on Monday at a march that has been banned by the authorities, but will call for calm.
The Ghalam News website said although the march has been
"postponed", Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, another defeated candidate, will "take part in the march today and invite people to keep calm."
The Iranian Interior Ministry earlier refused to give Mir Hussein Mousavi, who lost the presidential race, permit to hold a rally Monday in the capital Tehran, to protest the outcome of elections. Iranian authorities announced the arrest of dozens of rioters Sunday. A police official said that among those arrested were 10 people suspected to have masterminded the riots. Police forces have taken the necessary measures in Tehran to prevent riots similar to Sunday's.
