RAFAH, (PIC)-- A Palestinian citizen died Wednesday night in the collapse of a tunnel along the Egyptian-Palestinian borders south of Rafah city bringing the number of tunnel victims to 40 since the start of 2009, medical sources reported.

Dr. Muawiya Hassanein, the director of ambulance and emergency in the PA health ministry, told PIC reporter that the medical teams retrieved the body of Hassan Khadra, 43, from a collapsed tunnel.

He added that Khadra, from Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, was inside the tunnel when it collapsed over his head.

The health official noted that the number of tunnel victims since 2006 had reached 101.

Palestinian inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are forced to use the crudely dug tunnels in order to secure their needs of various goods after all crossings of the Strip were closed by the Israeli occupation authority and Egypt.
