27/08/2009 Telecommunications Minister Gebran Bassil called on Thursday to expand investigations on the Barouk station, saying that the issue has a foreign security aspect which is contact with Israel along with "other local aspects which we will not remain quiet about."

Speaking in a press conference on Thursday, Bassil said that Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar is indirectly defending Israel when he speaks about the Barouk case, adding “let him leave the issue to the judicial system.”

However, he said, “the issue is a matter of a national security by communicating with Israel as well as an internal danger within the country.”

“I never said that it is an Israeli network. It is a Lebanese network with an antenna directed toward Israel,” he said, stressing that he is not accusing anyone in the case.

Bassil also called on the Lebanese Judicial System to intensify its investigation on illegal communications and to involve the Telecommunications Ministry, in order to restore the state’s rights.

He added that he proposed a project to the cabinet to solve the issue, but, he said, it was neglected and that the judicial system chose to keep it under wraps.
