RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Movement of Hamas said Wednesday that the torture and abuse of prisoners in Mahmoud Abbas’s jails witnessed an unprecedented surge in the last two weeks, adding that many of its cadres and supporters are suffering from serious health conditions in these jails.

In a press release, Hamas said that what happened in the cities of Salfit, Beitunia, Juneid and Al-Khalil in recent days gives bad signs about the fate of many of its cadres especially those suffering from chronic diseases.

Hamas added that Abbas himself and his militia men are responsible for the tragedies happening in West Bank jails, noting that the names of those involved in torturing and abusing prisoners and their crimes are known and documented, and will be reported to international human rights organizations.

In the same context, the Palestinian center for human rights revealed that Abbas’s intelligence officers in Salfit broke the skull of a Palestinian citizen called Kanaan Shatat, 32, after kidnapping him Monday evening.

The center said that the family of the victim confirmed that their son was severely tortured by the intelligence apparatus in the city.

The center explained, according to the family’s account, that Kanaan was at eight o’clock on Monday in Al-Noor pharmacy located at the eastern entrance to the town of Bidya when he was attacked and rounded up by a group of individuals wearing civilian clothes including two intelligence officers.

The center added that after taking Kanaan to the intelligence headquarters in Salfit, he was physically assaulted by about 10 officers in a barbaric way which led to fractures in his skull and teeth as well as severe bruises in different parts of his body.

The center expressed deep concern about the torture and abuse of prisoners in West Bank jails, noting that such practices are prohibited under Palestinian law and constitute a gross violation of human rights guaranteed by the international law.

In a separate incident, Abbas’s militias reportedly kidnapped five Palestinian citizens including a diabetic during the last two days in the districts of Nablus, Jenin, Ramallah and Tulkarem.
