Report: The Palestinian society is still young

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- A report issued Friday by the Palestinian central bureau of statistics said that the age structure of the Palestinian society in general and children in particular indicates that this society is still young, where the children under age 18 constitute 49.4 percent of the total population.

The report, which was issued on the occasion of the world children’s day, also stated that according to data collected from a survey of the Palestinian household expenditure and consumption conducted in 2007, the poverty rate among poor families, who have children, reached 59.3 percent and 47.2 percent for childless families.

It added that the percentage of male and female students who dropped out of school in the basic education (elementary stage) was 1.6 percent and in secondary education was 6.5 percent.
The results of the labor force survey 2009 (second quarter) showed that the percentage of employed children, whether paid or unpaid, amounted to 32,000 children which comprises 3.9% of the total number of children in the age group 10-17 years, the report noted.
