'Israel Still Spying on Lebanon’s Telecoms Network'

23/11/2010 The Israeli aggression against Lebanese Telecoms network continues to be uncovered day after another…

On Tuesday, a much-awaited press conference over the Israeli ongoing violations was held at the Parliament by Telecoms Minister Charbel Nahhas, the head of the Information and Telecoms parliamentary bloc MP Hasan Fadlallah and the head of the head of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Imad Hobballah.

The press conference was aimed at showing the level of the Israeli violations and infiltration of the Lebanese Telecoms network and warning against the dangers of such violations at the level of national security.

During the press conference, Telecoms Minister Charbel Nahhas declared that Israel is continuing its widespread espionage penetration in Lebanon. He stressed that Lebanon is facing the aggression of a country that is one of the most advanced in the world in the telecommunications protection field.

Nahhas emphasized that the sector's modern capabilities are also subject to infiltration, where the mechanisms to protect it can easily be used to infiltrate it. He added that there is a responsibility to ensure that proper telecommunications services are provided to the Lebanese, while simultaneously being fortified against foreign interference in order to protect personal and national liberties.

"The state is working with the institutions of the private sector and it should monitor their progress in order that they reach the desired level of fortification that was not available earlier," Nahhas continued.
The Telecoms Minister said it was crucially important to protect communication networks in Lebanon against the Israeli attempts breach them, to ultimately protect personal freedoms and state security. "The Israeli breaches are clear and we have evidence on them," Nahas said, while calling for upgrading the communications networks to protect personal freedom and state security.

The head of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Imad Hobballah, in turn, explained how easily the Israelis infiltrated the Telecoms network, saying that the Israelis planted espionage devices in the Lebanese Telecoms antennae near the occupied Palestinian lands.

Meanwhile, the head of the Telecoms and Media parliamentary committee MP Hasan Fadlallah urged the Lebanese people to work together in the face of Israeli threats to the Telecoms sector.

Fadlallah revealed that the Lebanese Army intelligence, alongside the resistance and in the cooperation with the Telecommunication Ministry, were able to reveal a big secret, that Israel was capable of installing secret phone lines in the resistances' phones. “Israel was able to conduct such an operation with the help of its espionage agents in Lebanon,” he said.

The lawmaker noted that the enemy installed three phone lines which its agent purchased, in phones of three resistance members, referring that the enemy was able to reach through developed programming, espionage on everything related to these three resistance fighters.

Fadlallah said earlier this month the parliament has obtained photos, maps and documents that show where Israel is building at least 21 wiretapping and spy posts. He added that a committee analyzed the documents and determined Israeli engagement in spying activities along the Lebanese border.

Since 2009, Lebanon has launched a nationwide crackdown on Israeli spy cells, arresting nearly 100 people, including members of security forces and telecommunications personnel, on suspicion of spying for Israel's spy agency of Mossad. A number of the suspects have admitted to their roles in helping Israel identify targets inside Lebanon, mostly belonging to Hezbollah, which Tel Aviv heavily bombed during its 2006 war against the country.
