Pro- and anti-government demonstrators clash in the capital Cairo in an escalation of tension.
Clashes have broken between pro- and anti-government dmonstrators in the Egpytian capital Cairo.
Protesters from both sides threw stones at each other in Tahrir Square, the epicentre of opposition demonstrations now in their ninth day.
An Al Jazeera correspondent reporting from the scene said that at least 15 people were injured in a stampede that started when clashes began between the two groups.
Also in Cairo, Al Jazeera's Jane Dutton, reporting from a vantage point of Tahrir Square, said that "hundreds of anti-government supporters were running from the square, including many women and children".
Fighting took place around army tanks deployed around the square, with stones bouncing off the armoured vehicles. Soldiers did not intervene.
Several groups were involved in fist fights, and some were using clubs. The opposition said in a statement that plain-clothes policemen had stormed the square.
"Members of security forces dressed in plain clothes and a number of thugs have stormed Tahrir Square," three opposition groups said in a statement.

Class analysis
Obama has given license to Mubarak and the Egyptian Army is executing the plan. The dumbest view by the Egyptian protesters is to regard the Army as their protectors or even as being neutral.
The Army was a tool for Mubarak and will remain his tool to the last day, unless ordered otherwise by the US.
This is not the same Army that overthrew Faruq--and many in that Army were with Faruq which explained the secrecy that Nasser required for his plan prior to the revolution.
Can you imagine how disgusted Arabs will feel now anytime an American official utter the word democracy?
