GAZA, (PIC)-- The Palestinian police have taken necessary measures to prosecute officers who violated the rights of news reporters during some riots caused by Fatah faction recently in the Gaza Strip, said Ayman Batniji, director of the Palestinian police information office.

He said that several security officers have been placed under arrest and are being interrogated and that the ministry of interior has been following the case intensely.

Gaza interior minister Fathi Hammad has instructed several officials from the ministry's information and public relations departments to meet with officials of media organizations to improve relations between the ministry and the different media outlets.

The organizations visited include the Associated Press, the Hurrah channel, the Al-Mustaqbal channel and the Gaza center for journalism.

Batniji said parties seeking to create chaos in Gaza caused the security situation that led to such mistakes.

”The police must maintain self-control and be conscious of the important role of the Palestinian journalist in highlighting national issues,” Batniji said.

According to the ministry's director of public relations Ali al-Nablusiyya, the interior minister ordered to meet the demands made by the media and guarantee press freedoms after agreements he made with reporters on Saturday.

”Media has seen during the government under Ismail Haneyya more freedom of expression than ever before,” Nablusiyya said.
