Gen. Gantz: Arab street a new player in region
[ 01/06/2011 - 03:42 PM ]
NAZARETH, (PIC)-- IOF Chief of Staff Gen. Benny Gantz has stated that Israel may face new challenges as the Arab street has appeared as a new player in the Arab region.
The fresh threats Israel currently faces pose a threat to the Israeli occupation forces as it becomes forced to deal with several fronts on a tight schedule, Gantz said at a meeting with the foreign relations and security committee in the Knesset on Tuesday.
He said that the IOF may find itself in several clashes as widespread popular protests sprout in the coming months.
Gantz said the threats along with the IOF's preparations to deal with possible demonstrations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip would require a hike in the budget allotted to the army.
The IOF chief also reiterated that the army would stop any attempts to defy Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, referring to Freedom Flotilla II due to deliver humanitarian aid to the tiny enclave on 20 June.
