IOA to release MP Yousef, renews detention of another Hamas MP
[ 04/08/2011 - 11:44 AM ]
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) is expected Thursday to release renowned Hamas MP Hassan Yousef among a batch of 75 prisoners who concluded their terms in full, the Ahrar center for prisoners’ studies and human rights said.
It said that Yousef, 56, has served his entire six years sentence after being denied the privilege granted to all prisoners of earlier release. The center said that Palestinian prisoners in general were denied this privilege as part of the tightening measures on them.
Yousef is one of the most prominent Hamas leaders in the West Bank and served as its spokesman for several years and was detained on several occasions for many years. He was elected as a member of the Palestinian legislative council while in custody.
Meanwhile, the IOA renewed the administrative detention of another Hamas leader for the second consecutive time.
Mohammed Maher Badr, 55, was arrested after his election as PLC member in 2006 and spent 40 months in jail. He served six years in Israeli occupation prisons on aggregate.
