Israel to Shut Down Nuclear Reactors for Fear of Missile Attacks

Local Editor

Israel decided to stop the nuclear activity at the reactors at Dimona and Nahal Sorek if a conflict erupted with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, or Hamas and other Palestinian organizations in Gaza, for fear that missiles would penetrate the facilities' defense shields and cause damage to the reactors.

The Zionist daily, Haaretz reported that the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission, in coordination with the Israeli Defense Forces agreed on this stoppage to prevent damage to the reactors' outlying area in case of a conflict.

“The working assumption shared by the Home Front Command and the IAEC management officials responsible for the two reactors is that the multilayered defense systems, which feature anti-missile missiles calibrated to intercept missiles at various heights, along with fortified installations, should be sufficiently effective to minimize damage in an attack against the reactors… Nonetheless, in principle any defense system can be penetrated..." Haaretz stated.

It further pointed out that “the IDF and the IAEC, which is subordinate to the prime minister, are prepared for the possibility of an attempted attack on the reactors during a conflict with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon or Hamas and other Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip.”

In parallel, the Israeli daily indicated Dimona is reachable by Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah’s missiles, while Nahal Sorek is reachable by rockets fired from Gaza.
