One refrain:
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
OK, so how many times is it taught that the Battle Hymn of the Republic was an abolitionist song? Rarely. It is sung as a patriotic song, even sung at presidential inaugurations and yes indeed taught and sung in American schools, drummed into American children’s heads that dying for your country to “make men free” in OTHER countries.
I ask, after a note from a dear Palestinian friend, what is different about children dying at the hands of the Israelis and becoming martyrs or their parents dying and becoming martyrs? Defending their homeland, not some far off country chosen to “set free” so that our US businesses can profit at the same time?
This however begs the question of why young children are singing this song.
Well, could it be that no matter where in the world a Palestinian child is they are sure to hear in their own homes how their relatives are persecuted, occupied, killed, yes martyred at the hand of Israel be they Muslim OR Christian only because they are not Jewish and Israel as the Zionist state took their land has for more than 60 years claimed a right to it because of their RELIGION?
Be it a Jewish homeland (remember Zionism as an ideology started long before the Holocaust) or a safe haven for Jews after the Holocaust on the graveyard of Palestine.
Martyrdom of children in Christianity has a LONG history starting with the Holy Innocents who were killed by Herod and then a long list of child saints. Christian children are taught at a very early age to become “fishers of men”. To die for your faith in Christianity has a LONG history since the very beginning. This is taught to Christian children! Heck, what church is there that doesn’t do missionary work of some sort, many in lands where it is known they can be persecuted and killed. Does this stop them? No!
Yet in the case of Palestinian children they are BORN into persecution be they Muslim or Christian. So, I want to ask a question: How do you teach small children who definitely hear (unless in a home that never turns on the news or voices anything concerning Palestine in front of the children) about Palestine that they are born into persecution? It’s a fact isn’t it? This video isn’t about teaching children to hate. It is about real life UNFORTUNATELY.
“When we die as martyrs we will go to heaven”. Christianity teaches this as well.
Children are innocent. (although oddly, in Christianity children are born with original sin, not so in Islam or Judaism)
Why are Palestinian children in particular born into persecution?
This is the question that should be asked, not wondering why a video teaching them that they will go to heaven if they die is wrong, not wondering why these children who have been dispossessed of their homeland and humanity as well long for what others, Israelis and Americans take for granted.
Why can’t Palestinian children have the same aspirations as them? Is the beef with the fact they are young? Go into any Israeli or American home and see what those children hear about their countries from their parents or in church where the flag stands at the altar as well.
Palestinian children have the right to freedom and their own safety. When this comes to pass, there will be no more songs such as this one, there will be no more Palestinian children’s blood that is the REAL reason for this song, not hatred, but strength in their own humanity in our creator’s eyes, NO child of any faith should die because of it.
Let these children grow up in DIGNITY and peace with their own self-determination honored just like others. If a Palestinian child dies at the hands of Israel, YES he is a martyr both in Islam AND Christianity. When Americans stop teaching their children that they should be willing to “die for their country” then pass judgement.
