[ 13/08/2010 - 12:14 PM ]
GAZA, (PIC)--
Abu Obaida Al-Jarrah, the general-commander of the Palestinian police in the Gaza Strip said on Thursday that the Palestinian police is obliged to hold accountable any policeman or police officer involved in violating the citizens rights, including journalists.
Jarrah made these remarks as he paid a visit to the house of Al-Jazeera net correspondent in the Gaza Strip Ahmad Fayyadh who was assaulted by a policeman in a misunderstanding a week ago. The visit was aimed at reassuring the journalist and his family and to inform them on the results of the investigation.
He stressed that the PA interior ministry in Gaza will not allow any violation against any Palestinian citizen, including journalists, underlining that human rights of every citizen is protected and of great value for the Palestinian police.
However, he pointed out that what had happened with Fayyadh was an individual act that doesn’t reflect the behavior and policy of the Palestinian police, underscoring that the Palestinian police was and would remain in service of the public.
In this regard, Jarrah informed family of the victim that all policemen involved in the attack on their son were reprimanded, arrested, and faced salary deduction in addition to recommendation not to give anyone of them high position in the future, adding that such accountability was meant to highlight that dignity of the Palestinian citizens is important.
He also noted that a stern message was disseminated to all policemen urging them to respect journalists and all citizens regardless of the psychological pressure they are facing.
For his part, Fayyadh and his family thanked Jarrah and the Palestinian police for the excellent work they are doing to preserve law and order in the Strip, adding that the visit reflects the high responsibility and wisdom of the Palestinian police and government in Gaza Strip.
