Sleiman, Miqati and Jumblatt Back Assad

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman stressed on Thursday the importance of Syria's stability on the economic and security situation in both Syria and Lebanon.

Visitors of the Baabda Palace quoted the President as expressing a hope that the situation in the Arab state would return to normal in order for it to resume its reform plans.

He voiced his confidence that the Syrian leadership would overcome the instability of recent days that erupted during anti-regime protests.

For his part, Prime Minister-Designate Najib Miqati telephoned Syrian President Bashar Assad and praised the Syrian people's support for his leadership. The premier also lauded them for obstructing attempts to create strife given the recent demonstrations in Syria.

Miqati and Assad also addressed developments in the Middle East.

One day earlier, Speaker Nabih Berri held a telephone call with Syrian President Bashar Assad during which they discussed the latest developments and said that Syria will always stand as the fort of Arabism. "Yesterday's scenes from the Arab world confirm that Syrian President Bashar Assad's drive towards development and modernization will continue," Berri went on to say.

Meanwhile, the head of the National Struggle Front bloc MP Walid Jumblatt noted that Assad's speech on Wednesday presented positive possibilities that fundamental change will be introduced in Syria in favor of its people.
"Should the Baath party decisions be implemented, then Syria's national unity and internal stability will be fortified," Jumblatt said in a statement. "Syria does not need lectures on nationalism from suspicious western sides that claim that they want reform introduced in Syria when in reality they want to destroy it and drown it in chaos," he added.

"As for those in Lebanon who are anxiously monitoring the developments in Syria, it would be helpful to remind them that Syria's security is essential to Lebanon's and therefore its stability falls in Lebanon's national interest," the Progressive Socialist Party leader stressed.
