Obama: "Acting Alone Against Syria Would be a 'Mistake'" - McCain Calls for US-Led Aerial Attacks against Syria - Russia: US Draft on Syria Must Be Balanced

Obama: "Acting Alone Against Syria Would be a 'Mistake'"

"... The president again resisted calls for sending U.S. troops to stop Assad’s crackdown in Syria, in which 7,500 people have been killed.
“For us to take military action unilaterally, as some have suggested, or to think that somehow there is some simple solution, I think is a mistake,” Obama said.
Obama said the situation is more complicated than the one in Libya, where NATO troops helped to protect anti-government forces against a crackdown by that country’s leader, Moammar Gadhafi...."

He said the stakes were much higher in Syria, and that the United States should act without the approval of the United Nations, but with the support of Arab and other allies.

The previous Republican presidential nominee John McCain said the US “should seek the active involvement of key Arab partners, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and willing allies in the European Union, NATO and Turkey”.

The Arizona Senator also claimed that any such effort would require taking out Syria’s air-defense systems. "We're the only ones who can do that," he boasted.

Russia: US Draft on Syria Must Be Balanced

Russia said that a new US resolution draft at the UN Security Council would be modified version of the last draft, adding that it should be balanced.russian deputy FM

The "new US draft of the UNSC resolution on Syria is a slightly modified version of the last vetoed document. It should be substantially balanced," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on his Twitter account late Monday.

Diplomats said last week that Washington was drawing up a new draft resolution demanding humanitarian access to Syrian cities where thousands have been killed.

If put to a vote, it would be the third time Western nations have tried to get a Security Council resolution on the Syria crisis, after two previous attempts were vetoed by Russia and China.

The US said Monday it hoped Moscow would “turn its attention to Syria and push for humanitarian relief there” now that Russia's presidential elections are over.
"We're hoping for some fresh attention to the tragedy in Syria now that the elections are passed," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.
